Presenter: Lori Gill, Founder and Lead Trauma Therapist, Attachment and Trauma Treatment Centre for Healing

This comprehensive two-day training will provide insight into current trauma, attachment, and neuroscience research ensuring an understanding of critical information and best practice strategies for working with trauma. You will learn how trauma at different ages impacts patients a neurological, emotional and physiological level. This information will allow you to make connections to later life behaviours and health outcomes to create treatment plans that promote targeted integration. This training will also help you to enhance your clinical skills and learn how you can add trauma regulation and attachment healing strategies to your repertoire. Day 2 will focus on putting it into practice. Through this training participants will learn how to make historical connections, complete initial assessments, and formulate trauma-informed treatment planning. Participants will learn about various phase-based treatments for complex trauma and will review best practice and evidence-based approaches through an experiential format.

Ruth Lanius, MD, PhD

Attachment  and  Trauma  Treatment  Centre  for  Healing   Conference  2016

Workshop Details:

In this workshop Dr. Lanius will describe a four dimensional model (4-DModel) outlining a dissociative and a non-dissociative dimension of each of the four dimensions of consciousness. Furthermore, the neurobiological underpinnings and a detailed approach to treatment of trauma-related altered states of consciousness and dissociation will be described. Experiential exercises involving the use of imagination, imagery, and mind/body techniques will be utilized to illustrate relevant concepts and treatment.

Dr. Lanius established the Traumatic Stress Service & Traumatic Stress Service Workplace Program that specialize in the treatment and research of PTSD and related co-morbid disorders.

She is currently the Chair for Harris-Woodman in Mind-Body Medicine at the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

She has authored more than 100 published papers and chapters in the field of traumatic stress and is currently funded by several federal funding agencies. Dr.Lanius regularly lectures on the topic of PTSD nationally and internationally, and recently published a book with Eric Vermetten and Clare Pain, ‘The Impact of Early Life Trauma on Health and Disease’.

Learning Objectives: • Understanding the four dimensions of consciousness • The emergence of the self through integrated experiences of the four

dimensions of consciousness. • Recognizing trauma related to alterations in consciousness • Predicting the occurrence of altered states of consciousness • Effective interventions to overcoming altered states of consciousness • Effects of changes in the mind, brain and body

Sarah Schlote, MA, RP, SEP

Day 4 - April 12:  Empowered Boundaries: Somatic Exercises for Healthy Anger, Assertiveness &  Personal Agency Presenter: Sarah Schlote, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner ™ for this experiential one day training focusing on using the body for working with trauma.

Attachment  and  Trauma  Treatment  Centre  for  Healing   Conference  2016

Workshop Details:

Many clients with trauma struggle to engage their fight response in an effective way. For some, anger is hyper-aroused, as seen in clients who are highly reactive, combative and struggle with violence and rage. For others, anger is hypo-aroused, such as in clients who respond passively, have difficulty setting boundaries, or show evidence of shame, fear or collapsed defeat when standing up for themselves or stepping up in the world. Drawing from the principles and practices of Somatic Experiencing, this hands-on 1-day workshop will introduce participants to procedural/body memory; the cycle of activation; the importance of titration and embodied containment in working with survival energies and impulses; and practices to safely explore self-protective movements and build capacity to mobilize a more empowered sense of oneself. Incremental strategies ranging from awareness of physiological aversion responses (the subtle signs the body says "no" that are often overridden) to more active experiential boundary exercises will be presented, along with cautions and contra-indications to prevent overwhelm and keep somatic practices within one's range of tolerance.

  Carol Prentice, RSW, EFT Therapist

Day 5 - April 13:  Energy Therapies and Mindfulness Practices to Regulate the Calm Mind and Body Time: 9 a.m. – 12 noon Presenter: Carol Cowan (Prentice)

Attachment  and  Trauma  Treatment  Centre  for  Healing   Conference  2016

Workshop Details:

Based on advances in neuroscience, Energy Healing Therapies and Mindfulness Meditation have become more readily accepted as part of trauma treatment. This is an opportunity to open your mind to new ways of helping heal trauma. During this workshop you will gain knowledge of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) which is a psychological, needle free version of acupressure. EFT combines exposure, cognitive restructuring, and physical relaxation while tapping on a sequence of acupressure points and repeating key phrases out loud. The physical stimulation of acupressure points during exposure to an emotional trauma sends deactivating signals directly to the amygdala, which results a rapid reduction of maladaptive fear. This workshop will also cover safety and limitations of EFT for trauma survivors. In addition, you will discover how other mindfulness practices can be very helpful in relieving the symptoms of stress and PTSD. Join this workshop to be personally guided through a gentle, mindfulness meditation experience.

Clients seeking therapeutic support, including those who have experienced trauma, often:

Interestingly, self-compassion related therapy addresses each of these three common ways of coping with difficult situations by exploring and fostering the following to combat them:

• Self-acceptance and self-kindness • Mindfulness • Human connectedness

This workshop will define and explore the importance of these three main components of Self-compassion as well as provide hand-ons activities and exercises that you can use in both individual and/or group settings with your clients.
