ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD IN THE GREATER CAPITAL REGION

Today, each individual has an extraordinary power to affect change for themselves, their families and their communities. United Way of the Greater Capital Region is harnessing their energy and helping them turn their aspirations into reality. In the past year, we continued to build on our successes and work with partners to impact the lives of more people throughout our community. From making sure people meet their basic needs for food, housing and safety, to establishing a foundation for success for children, to equipping people with the knowledge and skills they need to get on more stable financial ground, to facilitating better health for our residents, United Way of the Greater Capital Region is there.

Our Community Care Fund continues to provide support to nonprofit organizations engaged in essential work, emergency response to local crises, seed money for new endeavors, and long-term community impact. The United Way of the Greater Capital Region is providing locally tailored and locally driven solutions to create a healthy, thriving community. Results of our commitment to the long term health of the region:

• United Against Hunger’s Summer Meals demonstrated a 290% increase in meals served to Capital Region children since United Way funding began;

• The CA$H Coalition of the Greater Capital Region has increased the number of tax returns filed between tax year 2008 and 2015 by 45% as a result of our guidance and support as well as through strategic partnerships;

• United Way 2-1-1 Northeast Region has thrived with a 37% increase in call volume;

• Family and Neighborhood Resource Centers have increased the number of individuals and families in crisis served by 28% and assisted 56% in long-term resilience

These successes—and the many other great results achieved in 2015-16—are a testament to what we can accomplish when individuals, government, businesses, academia, health agencies, faith-based groups and nonprofits join together in common cause. United Way is proud to facilitate funding, expertise and programmatic solutions to the issues that matter most, to help the most people.

We thank you, our donors, corporate partners, funded partners and volunteers for your dedication to LIVEUNITED. Behind all of the statistics are real people whose lives are forever changed for the better, because of you. We are grateful stewards of your generosity. UNITED, we can change lives!

Family & Neighborhood Resource CentersSTRATEGIC INVESTMENTS

United Way Family and Neighborhood Resource Centers (FNRC) provide one-stop, coordinated services to individuals and families at five locations across the Capital Region – Mechanicville Area Community Services Center, Schenectady Area Community Action Program, Schoharie County Community Action Program, Trinity Alliance and Unity House.

THE GOALS OF THE FNRC PROGRAM ARE:

• To provide basic needs and short-term assistance in times of crisis;

• To provide long-term solutions to the strains placed on local individuals and families;

• To serve as a local leader in ensuring communities are safe, stable and interconnected so that individuals and families thrive.

The centers provide individuals and families access to a network of coordinated services close to home. Each FNRC is a partnership of health and social service providers, residents, schools, businesses and faith-based organizations, all working together to build on the strengths and address the needs of neighborhood residents and the neighborhood as a whole.

FAMILY & NEIGHBORHOOD RESOURCE CENTERS CONTINUE TO GROW• 28% increase in individuals and families in

crisis served; • 56% increase in individuals and families assisted

in long-term resilience

“ If the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center wasn’t here, my family would still be struggling. It’s been my greatest resource.”

Labor and United Way, Partners in Meeting Human Need

United Way of the Greater Capital Region does not assess our member agencies any dues or fees for their participation in our federation.

In times of tragedy, routine expenses can become a major inconvenience and source of stress. United Way’s Emergency Labor Assistance Program (ELAP) is a partnership between local organized labor unions and United Way of the Greater Capital Region, designed to meet temporary financial needs of community members when emergencies occur.

This year, the United Way and ELAP worked with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 132, Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 2, CSEA Tax Local 690, District Council 9 New York IUPAT, Painters and Allied Trades, Local 201, IUE-CWA AFL-CIO Local 301, IUE-CWA Local 81359, and Teamsters in assisting 29 union members faced with emergencies.Together we helped with BASIC NEEDS including food security, housing (power disconnects, house fires) and personal safety. We helped with HEALTH issues such as medical emergencies for union members and their children ranging from cancer to surgery.

Once again, together, we accomplish more than any one person or agency can do alone. That’s what it means to #LIVEUNITED.
