The following pages list independent primary and secondary schoolsin the state of Maryland, including both secular and religious

schools that are not part of the states public school systems. Thelist is based on information provided by the website of the MarylandState Department of Education and by the schools themselves. Inmany cases, we talked to school representatives; in some cases, werelied on school websites.

Our list does not include independent schools that offer onlynursery school or kindergarten classes. However, thoseschools are listed by county on the MSDEs website,www.marylandpublicschools.org; phone 410-767-0100.

Tuition figures are the latest available.

Many schools had not set fees for 2016-17 when we gatheredthis information and schools often charge extra fees that are not

considered part of tuition. We recommend that readers contactschools directly to check on tuition and to ask about additional fees, enrollment policies and waiting lists.

Readers also should be aware that just because the state licensesa school to teach certain grades, that does not mean all of thosegrades are offered.

It is important to us (and to our readers) to keep the information inthis semi-annual guide as accurate as possible.

Please bring any discrepancies to our attention by [email protected].

Creative edgeIndependent schools doubling down on arts-based education

    By Brian Shappell

Resources for arts programs at public schools in states

throughout the country are, on aggregate, shrinking. Insome cases, there has been an increasing movement toward

more traditional academics, those subjects that show up onstandardized testing. In addition, since last decades Great

Recession, finding states without escalated budget concernsand shortfalls has become increasingly difficult.

Maryland has not been immune to these trends. But as Marylands public schools shift resources away

from arts-based programs, many independent schools in thestate are working to maintain, if not significantly increase,

their commitments to the arts..And given the reputations of independent schools such

as Maryvale Preparatory School, the Calvert School and the Carroll

Lutheran School, one would be hard-pressed to characterize them as

anything but academically rigorous. The arts allow students to explore all

aspects of their thinking and creativityin ways that can be incorporated

into the classroom, said StephanieColdren, director of communications

at Calvert. Its important for kidsgrowth to have creative outlets. Like

reading, writing, math, they need thisto become well-rounded people.

Carroll Administrator Karen Gan-jon pointed to examples of making

real-life connections between learningdisciplines, such as measuring compo-

nents to make a piece of art helping astudent work through a future science

lab experiment.Several studies also have shown a

    positive connection between students

involvement in the arts and academicachievement.

A 2009 Center for Arts Education

report noted that public schools inNew York with the highest access to

arts-based education and resourceshad the best graduation rates.

Conversely, those with the lowest access had the greatestratio of dropouts.

A 2010 study of Missouri public schools illustrated that afocus on arts education contributed to higher student test

scores and reduced frequency of disciplinary incidents.Studies in 2002 and 2010 conducted by the Arts Education

Partnership found students with more opportunities inmusic, dance and drama classes showed higher proficiency

    in math, reading and writing.

The research on this is solid, Ganjon said.Beyond test scores, a number of independent schooleducators and advocates note the arts help with real-world,

non-tested skills. The art of public speaking is something we hold pretty

important, Coldren said. I hear from a lot of our alumni

that remember when they were little speaking to the eagle. They remember being told when on stage during practices

[for school productions] to project their voices loud enough

that the eagle in the back of the room can hear it, Coldrensaid. Its one, quirky thing, but theres a lasting impact, practical use for everyday life when they are adults.

Heather Harlan-Warnack, the director of communicationsand development at Maryvale, suggested the growingimportance of technology underscores the importance and

connection to the arts. She gave an example of a recentMaryvale graduate who was highly proficient in computerprogramming and involved in the schools visual arts

programs. The school worked with Towson University toallow her to take more advanced courses in computer logicas part of her high school education. Shes presently excelling

as a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology.Arts and technology are so married

    together, Harlan-Warnack said. I think

cutting back on arts comes from a verynarrow focus.

Patrick McAvoy, a Calvert Hall College

High School alumnus who worked in

event planning and promotion with Balti-mores Downtown Partnership before re-

cently moving to Florida, did not attendthe school specifically seeking better op-tions in the arts. Yet, McAvoy remembers

an ever-present encouragement of thearts that he believes benefitted most stu-dents whove come through those halls.

Creativity is important to develop-ing your intellect and theres only somuch creativity involved in algebra

and biology, he said.In Arts Education Partnerships State

of the States 2015, Maryland public

schools fared better than most statesfrom a host of policy standpoints.Still, in an era of increasingly strained

budgets and preoccupation withstandardized test scores, supportersof arts programs in schools remain

uncomfortable with the direction,if not rhetoric, on the partof lawmakers and

    some high-leveladministrators.

    My colleagues working

in public schools are alwaysworried about more cutscoming to staff relat-

ed to arts education,Ganjon said. I cantimagine our school

    without a commit-

ment to the arts. The bottom line

is that part ofquality educa-tion, as we define it, includes

    the arts.

    The arts allow students

    to explore all aspects

    of their thinking and

    creativity in ways that

    can be incorporated

    into the classroom.

    Its important for kids

    growth to have creative

    outlets. Like reading,

    writing, math, they need

    this to become well-

    rounded people.

By offering curriculum centered onleadership, community service andforeign language proficiency, someMaryland independent school leaderssay they prepare their students forcollege as early as pre-kindergarten.

The importance of leadership iswoven into the curriculum of GerstellAcademy in Finksburg, where studentsenrolled in pre-kindergarten through12th grade learn about historic figures, current events and the United States asa super power, said Mary Louque, theschools vice president and director ofadmissions.

On top of its leadership focus, students complete a rigorous academiccourse load, which includes dailyphysical education and foreignlanguage classes, she said. The schoolsgoal is for every student to graduatewith a functional fluency in Spanish, she said.

Were doing what we say weredoing, Louque said. We really believeits important to have our graduatesready to do two things: make a positivecontribution or difference in the world, and we wanted Gerstell graduates tohave a competitive edge.

At Calvert School, students inkindergarten through eighth grade alsolearn foreign languages. Each studenttakes Spanish when they are 6 years oldand takes French when they are 7 yearsold. After that, students must choose alanguage to take through eighth grade, said Stephanie Coldren, the schoolsdirector of communications, whoadded that foreign language proficiencywill help them in college and in life.

The Baltimore school focuses itsstudents on character and leadership,

too, offering the older, middle schoolstudents to mentor the youngerstudents through a variety of programs, providing all ages the opportunity tolearn from one another and a skill set

many of their peers lack entering highschool, she said.

With fundamentals at its core, Calvertstudents learn composition as early assecond grade, Coldren said. She pointedout that Baltimore native John Waters, the famous film director and CalvertClass of 1958 alum, said in an interviewwith the schools magazine, I wish Iquit school in sixth grade because theonly thing I ever learned I learned atCalvert School. I learned how to write,

I learned how to give shows and Ilearned public speaking .

What weve always been told byour alums is that because we havethis strong curriculum that focuses onthe fundamentals and teaches themhow to be a student, they feel verywell prepared for college and have theskills necessary to succeed in college,Coldren said.

At St. James Academy in Monkton, kindergarten through eighth gradepupils at the international baccalau-reate school are learning their lessonsthrough a global lens, said Lisa Davis, head of the middle school.

Students collaborate on projectsaimed at tackling big problems suchas water and food shortages across theworld. That focus seeps into a varietyof subjects, including in art class wherestudents have made cards and soldthem to benefit microloans for third-world countries, she said.

The whole idea of 21st centuryworkplace revolves aroundcommunication and collaboration if they can figure out how to be

collaborative, how to problem solveand learn how to fail and how to growfrom that, theyll be prepared forcollege and beyond, Davis said.

Gerstell Academy and the Instituteof Notre Dame boast a 100 percentgraduation rate. The Institute of NotreDames Class of 2015 earned more than$13.5 million in merit scholarshipsaveraging more than $151,685 perstudent, said Jeannie Kihn, directorof admissions, public relations andmarketing for the school.

The all-female, Catholic high schoolprides itself on giving its 312 studentsa full college preparatory experience

with a foundation in service andacademic excellence in the heart ofdowntown Baltimore, Kihn said.

Easy access to all the city has to offerenables girls a variety of opportunities, from attending classes at JohnsHopkins University, taking quick field

trips to the National Aquarium andvolunteering at Mercy Medical Center, she said.

Were big on giving back to thecommunity and growing the girl and

helping the world, she said.Girls enrolled in the Project Lead

the Way program at the historic schooltake classes in engineering, biomedical

engineering and computer science fields dominated by male professionals offering them a chance to explorethose subjects and giving them theupper hand in the college enrollment

process, she said. Its a great school and the girls who

come out of here are such incredibleyoung women who learn how to

advocate for themselves the minutethey walk in the door, Kihn said.

Even the best out-of-state school isntnecessarily a good fit for every student. But for those who seek a specificchallenge or courses not offered intheir local public schools, a boardingschool education can be a satisfyingexperience.

Its the best thing you can dofor your child because you learnresponsibility and accountability, saidKeith McMahon, a Virginia residentwho attended boarding schools inConnecticut and New York whilegrowing up. If youre late for breakfastor forget to wear a tie, there areconsequences. That makes you learnto grow up quick, makes you develop awork ethic.

McMahon, now working in the privatesector, agrees with many educatorsand administrators in believing thatthe most obvious benefit of a boardingschool education is developingindependence.

At an age and time when studentsare having their most importantdevelopment, that you can solve yourown issues without your parents canreally be meaningful, said ChristopherBurner, the head master and formerteacher at Western Reserve Academy inHudson, Ohio Its lasting learning thathelps at college and well beyond.

A student looking for specializedprograms such as pre-professional arts

programs, courses in highlyspecialized or advanced technological

tracks or even top-level, non-traditionalsports programs such as water polo, fencing and squash might not find themin their local public or private schools.Myra McGovern, the vice president ofmedia at the National Association ofIndependent Schools (NAIS), believesthat boarding schools give studentsa greater number of options for theireducation.

If you live in a community wherethere might be one school in the region-- what it offers is what you get,McGovern said. For those families, theoptions available at boarding schoolsare particularly appealing.

Giving student educational optionsand access to differing viewpoints andperspectives help boarding schoolsfight the stereotypical myth that theyare sheltered or bubble-wrapped.McGovern argues that many of the1,800 schools NAIS represents stronglyencourage an honest dialogue aboutreal-world problems and ideas over ayou-cant-talk-about-this culture thatshe said is growing in public schools.

Public schools are not allowed totalk about religion, politics, or reallyanything controversial, McMahon said. That doesnt sound very intellectuallyintriguing to me. Private schools donthave to be held to that standard. Inessence, there isnt always a comfortzone in play.

Breaking out of her own comfort

zone was a big draw for Sara Brauner, who attended Western ReserveAcademy. Admittedly shy as a child,Braumer relished the chance to attendan independent school far from herparents, embracing the opportunityto interact with people of diversebackgrounds, interests and opinions. She found all that, as well as a closesense of community among fellowstudents and faculty. A big part ofthat came from her connections withinstructors who also took on the role ofmentor.

Teachers take such an interest inmentoring the students, said Brauner, now living in Texas. They have

lunch and dinner with students. Iremember one would sit in commonareas during the weekend, alwayshappy to engage.

One of the faculty members sheremembered fondly was Burner, attended the academy more thana decade before. He enjoyed theexperience at Western ReserveAcademy so much that he pursuedindependent education as a career. He found his way back to the schoolas a teacher, wrestling coach and, ultimately, the head master.

What brought me back was the stu-dents, said Burner, whose son attendsa boarding school in Connecticut. Thatinteraction, that connection betweenteachers and students in that setting isjust incredible.

    Burner said an independent school

education can be rewarding for the

student, if chosen for the right reasons.

Often parents who force their children

    to attend an out-of-state independent

school are driven by the fear that this

type of schooling is the only way to get

into the right college. Or worse, using

the school as a form of punishment

    for academic underperformance or

    unacceptable behavior.

It has to come from within a student,

Burner said. They have to be eager for

    these opportunities and challenges to

    be successful.

Why some families opt for boarding schoolsAdvocates say out-of-state schooling helps teach accountability, responsibility
