SHALOM AUSTIN BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2016-2017

ABOUT SHALOM AUSTIN Shalom Austin is the hub of Jewish life in Central Texas. Through our cultural values, we provide services and resources to connect, empower and impact the community locally, nationally and around the world.

• We are the convener of Judaism in Central Texas, connecting people and organizations with shared culture and life experiences.

• We empower people and organizations that make a difference in our Jewish community through leadership development, volunteer opportunities and philanthropic involvement.

• We positively impact people’s lives through the services and facilities we offer.

What started as 40 acres of unoccupied land in Northwest Austin, became the home of the Dell Jewish Community Campus in 2000.

Shalom Austin consists of four branches: Jewish Community Center, Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Foundation, which work together to comprehensively address the needs of Austin’s Jewish community in collaboration with area congregations, schools and community organizations.

CORE VALUESThe goals and operations of Shalom Austin are based upon and guided by the core Jewish values of:

• Kehillah: community building

• Limud: the centrality of learning, Jewish culture and Jewish life

• Tikkun Olam: the commitment to make the world a better place

• Tzedakah: pursuing justice through acts of Jewish giving

• K’lal Yisrael: the oneness and unity of the Jewish people worldwide

OUR BRANCHESJewish Community Center Serving Your Social, Cultural, Educational, Fitness and Wellness NeedsThe Shalom Austin Jewish Community Center (JCC) is the primary programming branch, serving the social, cultural, educational, fitness and wellness needs of adults, senior adults, teens, children, parents and families. Programs and facilities at “The J” are open to everyone in the Austin area including visitors, welcoming and respecting people of all ages, fitness levels, interests and religions. JCC members

enjoy full access to our pool, sports and fitness facilities and receive discounts and priorities for recreational and educational programs, and special events such as art shows, special performances, youth and family activities, athletics, dance classes, Jewish education programs, young adult outings, senior adult programs and more.

Jewish Federation Connecting People, Organizations and Resources WorldwideThe Shalom Austin Jewish Federation connects people, organizations and resources to strengthen Jewish life and partnerships in Central Texas, Israel and around the world. Through the Jewish Federation, we are connected to our local, national and international Jewish networks.

Jewish Family Service Caring for People Through Counseling, Therapy, Support and OutreachShalom Austin Jewish Family Service (JFS) is the social service branch which provides a wide array of mental health and social services for adults, senior adults, teens, children, parents and families including short term counseling and needs assessment, longer term therapy, geriatric care management, outreach visitation to senior living communities, education and support groups, food pantry, emergency financial assistance, and information and referrals for additional resources.

Jewish Foundation Fostering Your Philanthropic Legacy Now and For Future GenerationsThe Shalom Austin Jewish Foundation is the branch that helps sustain a vibrant and secure Jewish community through philanthropy. The Jewish Foundation works in partnership with the Austin Community Foundation in fostering philanthropy, ensuring investments flourish and making a meaningful difference in the programs and traditions. Gifts to the Jewish Foundation can be arranged in several ways, the most common being through charitable gifts, such as cash or stock, a will or living trust, donor-advised funds, bequests, life insurance policies, retirement plans, or real estate.

JCAMPS “He [My son] had a childhood because of Camp Shalom [through the inclusion program]. This is the most vital resource for disabled children in all of Central Texas…The JCC has given me a gift that I can never repay. You saved my life.”

– Rene Shalom Austin’s inclusion program provides the necessary support, facilities and resources for meaningful participation by people with disabilities in Jewish life in Austin, and is funded through the Shalom Austin Annual Campaign.

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE “I was dealing with grief and helping my children deal with theirs as well. They provided me the resources and now my life is getting back on track…I’ve been able to start building my life again for me and my boys with the help of Jewish Family Service.”

– Wes After experiencing the devastating loss of his wife, Wes and his twin sons fell on hard times in need of assistance and support. Shalom Austin Jewish Family Service (JFS) helped Wes with funeral expenses, auto repair costs and connected him with a financial advisor to help ensure he could go to work and continue to move forward in his life.

SENIOR ADULT PROGRAMS

“It [Shalom Austin JCC] really opened up a whole world for me. I have a lot of friends... The connections go way beyond just the mahjong table.”

– Elly

Stan and Elly had an idea to start a book club. So they joined the Shalom Austin Jewish Community Center, and they created a successful club with about 10 people. The senior adult programs at the JCC are free or reduced in price to make them affordable. The JCC does not turn anyone away.
