PRE-CONFERENCE EVENTS

All pre-conference events require pre-registration. Remember to plan for an early hotel arrival if necessary.

Jump-StartIn the Jump-Start pre-conference event, you’ll learn about some of the tools you need to promote positive change and a positive narrative of the labor movement and public education—including both K-12 and higher education. You’ll also take part in a community event that showcases the importance of engaging your community in the fight to preserve and promote dignity for all. Help #Reclaimit and fight forward with positive, collective action!

WorkshopsEach workshop will be one hour and 45 minutes, and will include AFT PSRP and Higher Ed members and leaders as presenters, whenever possible. Workshops will address:

Union Leadership Skills, such as building union structures and fostering connections to the community that will help engage members and foster public support through the Friedrichs crisis and beyond.

Worker and Workplace Concerns, such as the crisis of part-time work; health and safety (including workplace stress); privacy and free thought on and off the job; and political, legislative and legal strategies and tactics for fighting privatization and corporatization in schools, colleges, universities and society at large.

Skills and Knowledge for Workers, such as promoting a racially inclusive and equitable union and workplace; managing, or eliminating, student loan debt; and bilingual education.

Job and Special Interest Group Discussions Join us for a job and special interest group discussion breakfast session on Saturday, April 2. These sessions are designed to bring together participants who share similar work responsibilities, or similar interests outside of work. Members of the PSRP and Higher Ed program and policy councils (PPCs) will facilitate these sessions and take recommendations back to the PPC and AFT for follow-up.

We’ll have job groups on all types of work—from para-professionals to adjunct faculty members to custodians to college financial service coordinators and everyone in between. Interest group discussions will include topics like navigating elder care and child care issues, planning for college, and enjoying Las Vegas!
