TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY

United Way of America created the Tocqueville Society in 1984 to honor people who have served their communities at extraordinary levels and given immensely of their time, talent, and resources. The name was chosen because of the vision of French historian Alexis de Tocqueville who recognized, applauded, and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in the hearts of Americans in his early 19th century writings in “Democracy in America.”

The Lycoming County United Way Tocqueville Society recognizes individuals or couples contributing $10,000 or more annually to the campaign. Local Society members are also members of the National Tocqueville Society, receiving benefits such as invitations to Tocqueville Leadership Weekends and other events, and the unique position of United Way being one of the world’s premier philanthropic organizations, which can be used to convene community business and civil leaders focused on the building blocks of a good life.

THE PETER HERDIC SOCIETY

The Peter Herdic Society is a vehicle to broaden, deepen, and recognize the support of community leaders for human service programs funded by Lycoming County United Way. All individuals who contribute $500 or more to the annual campaign are eligible for membership.

The impact of leadership giving goes far beyond the dollars donated. Participation in the Peter Herdic Society is an indication of a deeper involvement, a stronger commitment, and a desire to do more to meet the most pressing needs in our community. Members of the Peter Herdic Society ignite the interest of others and lead the way toward building a stronger, healthier community through their generous gifts.

Lycoming County United Way appreciates all gifts and values every donor, and believes that leadership givers deserve special recognition. The leaders listed in this book are caring people committed to achieving results and making a difference in people’s lives. They have both the motivation and the means to provide for our community, while inspiring friends, peers, and associates to follow their example. They lead the way by their commitment and integrity, and their willingness to make a powerful statement about their desire to care for and strengthen our community.

Who was Peter Herdic? (featured on cover) Williamsport’s premier entrepreneur, for whom LCUW’s leadership giving program is named, arrived in the city in 1853 and soon after began his real estate ventures on farmland west of Hepburn Street. Herdic was already involved in the lumber business and on his way to becoming a millionaire when he built his Fourth Street home. Eventually, he owned part of nearly every business in town, including the water works, gas works, newspaper, the Susquehanna Boom Company, and the Herdic House Hotel. He was the third mayor of Williamsport. He’s known for his philanthropy and also for being the inventor of a horse-drawn carriage called “the Herdic,” the forerunner to the taxicab.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

Lycoming County United Way (LCUW) is dedicated to finding new ways to meet the needs of individuals. One way we are doing this is through the LCUW Endowment Fund.

The Endowment Fund is a special fund created by donors through wills, bequests, trusts, and outright gifts. The assets of the endowment - its principal - are invested. The interest earned is used for the financial stability of Lycoming County United Way and to meet special needs as they arise.

Because of the ever-changing needs in our community, Lycoming County United Way must change its fundraising course. Growth in the LCUW Endowment Fund will provide our future with additional resources to meet other needs.

Please work with your attorney and/or financial planner and notify Lycoming County United Way at 570.323.9448 to be included in the Susquehanna Society.
