Student Union Cabinet FORWARDS

“Always Forwards. .Never Backwards.” 1

About Forwards According to the Oxford Dictionaries, ‘Forwards’ as an adverb means 'towards the front', or ‘onwards so as to make progress’. We, as Tanghinians, should move forwards. So how do we move forwards? We make changes in the coming 35th anniversary of Tanghin. We forward the diversified development of Tanghin. Let us start with some phrases regarding "forward(s)" and show you why we are known as "Forwards". As a noun, ‘forward’ means a pioneer. We are willing to try new things and fight for the rights of our schoolmates. We are willing to take a step forward. To put ‘forward’ in another meaning, it also means sending a message onto a further destination. "Forwards" as the Student Union would like to deliver messages between teachers and students. And let us look at some phrases too. To start off, ‘take something forward’ means to take responsibility for dealing with a task. That's why we are here to take responsibility and serve our schoolmates. ‘Carry forward’ is to shine with greater brilliance. By this, we mean that we want to spread the spirit of Tanghinians so that it can flourish. And there's ‘put forward’ as well, which is to state an idea. Regarding the needs of Tanghinians, we will give suggestions to teachers and fulfill them. And certainly last but not least, we want to ‘come forward’ too. We are more than ready to act as public servants in Tanghin. So why "Forwards", instead of just "Forward"? The ’s’ in ‘Forwards’ shows that we want to facilitate the advancement of numerous aspects, such as ECA, inter-school and teachers-students relationships. And we would also like to practise the above meanings of ‘Forward’ not only in one way. There's another thing - we join our effort and fuse into one union. We are a group of people with passion, with potential. Abraham Lincoln once said, ”I walk slowly, but I never walk backwards”. Today, we, "Forwards" , have this in our mind too: "Always forwards, never backwards." This is our motto.

“Always Forwards. .Never Backwards.” 2

Aims

//To enrich Tanghinians’ school life and enhance their sense of belonging to Tang Hin

-Some people claim that studying in Tang Hin is tedious as there are not enough activities for students. Therefore, Forwards aim at providing a memorable and fruitful school life for our students. We will organise a wide variety of desirable activities, ranging from cultural, recreational, sports and intellectual activities, such as Wargame, DIY workshops and sports competitions. -On the other hand, we will do our best to better our students’ daily school life by providing all kinds of support and welfare to cater everyone’s need, such as finding tutors for academic support and striving for different kinds of discount. The student union has always been responsible for getting students united. We believe that our unremitting endeavor can better the school life in Tang Hin. We hope that in the not-too-distant future, students will be proud of being a Tanghinian.

// To serve as a communication channel between students and the school authorities -Forwards understand that different students have different opinions and needs, in which they may not be able to find an appropriate channel to air their views. Thus, Forwards aim to act as a “bridge” between students and the school by providing communication channels for students to express and air their views. We promise that we will listen to all opinions from our fellow schoolmates and respond to every of them efficiently and accurately, so as to cover the needs and demands from students , as well as to strive for the best we can provide for them. We will forward the thoughts and demands from our students to the school authorities expediently and do our best to protect students’ right.

“Always Forwards. .Never Backwards.” 3

//To be a pioneer in encouraging students to think innovatively -The coming year is the 35th anniversary of Tanghin. Tanghinians aim at striving for a new climb in the future. We would like to act as a pioneer in leading Tanghinians to explore their future. As what in the slogan of Tanghin 35th anniversary says, “Fly high, see wide, strive for a new climb.” We dare to break free and step forwards. We would like to bring new ideas and activities into Tang Hin. We believe that Tanghinians are capable of more than what we had achieved in the past. However, Tanghnians lack confidence and initiative. We, Forwards, would like to unite Tanghinians to one and lead the road.

Our ideas -Forwards have came up with lots of new ideas, all of them aim at optimizing students’ school lives. 1. Graduation Memoir We would like to make a graduation memoir including teachers’ signature and classmates’ blessings on it. With photos and words, the memoir can be a great graduation present. Students may also leave their contact methods for their fellows. We would like to send our best wishes to our form six students by crafting out their own reminiscence. 2. Clothing and Books Recycling To nourish the virtue of frugality, we would like to collect students’ unwanted clothing and books and put them into good use. For clothing, we will donate them to charities. As for books, we would like to give them to the library. 3. Old Textbooks Selling Platform Nowadays, the selling price of textbooks is quite pricey. Students are always weary of selling and buying old textbooks to stores as this involves lots of price comparison. Also, with this selling platform, students can sell and buy books with a greater convenience. 4. Raise the Transparency of the Process Applying for Lockers Many of our students want to apply for a locker. School should set up a standard for who can use the locker. We suggest providing a platform and a clear procedure for students to apply.

“Always Forwards. .Never Backwards.” 22

5. Place a Clock in Every Classroom This has always been an inconvenience where there is no clock in the classrooms. During examinations and tests, we lack a standard clock as we can only depend on our own watches. Therefore, we strive for adding a clock in every classroom. It can benefit not only students, but also teachers. 6. Place a Rubbish Bin in every Cubicle in the Ladies Lavatory Placing a rubbish bin in every cubicles provide great convenience to our girls during menstruation cycle. It can ensure public hygiene. Embarrassment can also be avoided . 7. Suggestion Box Students may have different opinions and suggestions. However, they do not have a feasible channel to express their views. Therefore, we would like to place a suggestion box in front of the site of the student union in order to provide students an appropriate way to show their concern to our school. Also, we will make use of the Internet and create an online form to collect opinions. Utilising these tools, we can know more about students’ needs and strive our best to fight for them. We can also arrange meeting for students to discuss issues directly with school authorities. “Always Forwards. .Never Backwards.” 23

8.Developing a library circulation unit Forwards believe reading is beneficial to all students.Currently, the circulation unit is only available in the library. We would like to extend the system, which will be accessible for all students and teachers, even at home. 9.Cancel morning assembly under extreme weather For the sake of students’ health, Forwards had requested to cancel morning assembly under a certain temperature. Finally, the school authorities have agreed to humanize the criterias of cancelling the assembly.
