Got Your Six Support Dogs 2016-2017 Fiscal Year Annual Report2

Individuals who place themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe often face situations that require courage, selflessness, and incredible resolve at a moment’s notice. The intensity of their work can be relentless and can, in some cases, erode their inner resilience, leading to a syndrome called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Most people who survive traumatic events can resume their normal lives over time, but some cannot. Instead, they continue to relive their traumatic experiences through flashbacks and nightmares and feel fragmented and disconnected from society. Trauma survivors are also prone to anxiety, depression, and alcohol or drug abuse—conditions that can become fatal without intervention. In fact, veterans account for about 20% of suicides in the United States!

At Got Your Six Support Dogs, we believe our nation’s heroes should never walk alone. Studies have shown service dogs can provide healing comfort to those suffering from the psychological and emotional effects of PTSD. In addition, our dogs are trained to alert to oncoming anxiety, interrupt night terrors, and even retrieve objects—such as the telephone—in case of an emergency.

With your support, we were able to bring comfort, solace, and support to veterans and first-responders struggling with PTSD. The companionship and aide that our trained dogs can offer cannot be overestimated. In some cases, it will mean the difference between life and death. In others, it will build an important pathway that PTSD victims can travel to become reconnected to the life they once knew before their trauma.

Thank you for your continued belief in our mission.

Meet: Naithan

“After years of trying to battle PTSD on my own, I knew it was time to try a new method of treatment. Getting a service dog has completely changed my life from where I was a year ago. I can now go out with my family to places without being on the verge of a panic attack or feeling threatened. The companionship has not only helped me, but it has helped my family, who have also had to deal with the effects of my PTSD on them. People who know me have seen a change and everyone who meets Maverick is amazed how well trained he is. I don’t want to think where I would be without my service dog Maverick.” ~ Naithan, Army National Guard

Meet: Tracy

“When I contacted Nicole from Got Your Six Support Dogs, I had pretty much given up hope in ever becoming the person I was before I had reached my breaking point, mentally. My therapist recommended that I try this organization and I am absolutely ecstatic that I did. Not only have they given me a companion, but they have restored my faith in the human race. I am quite convinced that if anyone will ever get to meet God, it is the people that invest their time and volunteer for this organization. I was skeptical at first, but I have been completely humbled and I stand in awe of what great people are involved in this non-profit organization. I wish I had more time to volunteer, and I wish there was more I could do to help—which is another way they have helped me. I was basically a shut-in and didn’t leave my house (except to go to work) before I got my service dog and met these amazing people. They gave me the drive to want to help others like myself. I had lost that. I am slowly regaining myself back and I believe I owe that to Got Your Six Support Dogs. I love each and every one of the volunteers involved in this organization and words can’t begin to explain what they have done for me. ~ Tracy, Army

Meet: Jonathan

When US Army veteran Jonathan came home from the desert, it wasn’t just the shrapnel in his knee keeping him from leaving the house. Dreams filled with the carnage of war haunted his nights. The fear of roadside IEDs, suicide bombers lurking in crowds, and hidden snipers drove a wedge between him and his loved-ones. Feeling agitated, alienated, and “no longer human,” Jonathan contemplated ending his life.

In 2016, Got Your Six Support Dogs placed a trained PTSD service dog with Jonathan. Having a dog that alerts him to his rising anxiety, wakes him from night terrors, and reteaches feelings of love and affection, Jonathan’s life drastically changed. Jonathan is now able to confidently leave the house without fear. He is holding a job for the first time since leaving the Army, and he even enjoys public outings to amusement parks and WWE events with his wife and three children.

Dear Got Your Six Support Dogs,

My name is Rylee. You gave my Dad Jacie this month. I am writing this letter to thank you for training and giving us Jacie. Before you gave us Jacie, Dad would yell a lot and would be mad at us most of the time, but now that he has Jacie, we can see a difference in him, and it’s only been 21 days so far. He has stopped yelling as much and is a lot calmer. Every night we take Jacie for a walk, and when we get home she automatically starts playing with our other dog. They are getting along really well. Every night around 9 when everyone is settling down, they start their “crazy time” where they play until we put one of them to bed. Thank you for sending us Jacie, I know it’s only been a short time, but Jacie has already changed our lives for the better.

Sincerely, Rylee

VISION FOR 2018

In 2018, we’ll continue our mission to place PTSD service dogs with veterans and first-responders—both through our existing programs and through new initiatives. We’ll continue to train and place six PTSD service dogs, expand our owner-trained service dog programs, and invest in growing our volunteer network. One of the new initiatives we hope to debut in the coming years, is an additional class of six trained PTSD service dogs which will be placed with victims of military sexual trauma (MST) who suffer from PTSD, making us the first, and only, organization in the country to do so.

We hope that you will continue your support of our effort for years to come. PTSD is not a temporary phenomenon. As long as our veterans and first-responders place themselves in harm’s way to protect us, there will be the likelihood of PTSD occurrences. Service dogs bring a calming and loyal presence in the lives of those who struggle with PTSD, and it is your assistance that makes this possible.
