WHY WE PLAYScholar Athletes is a unique program based upon the proven link of athletic participation and academic success and is delivered – in true partnership with the schools – in dedicated spaces called Zones. We are the only non-profit in the Boston, Springfield and Everett public schools with dedicated on-site space and trained staff who are mission-driven tutors, mentors and coaches. Our staff is available to Zone members all day and after school.
Our Mission The mission of Scholar Athletes is to support academic achievement through athletics.
Core Values We strive to enhance the scholar-athlete experience, provide regular instruction to the coaching staff and improve academic performance and personal growth. These collaborative efforts build skills, confidence, shape character and enhance opportunities for success. Together we play to achieve because we are:
n Driven By Our Mission
n Committed to our Scholar Athletes
n Innovative in Our Approach
n Focused On the Future

Dear Friends and Supporters,
It is an exciting time at Scholar Athletes! This year we expanded to Everett, bringing us to three school districts in total - serving more than 5,000 students in 23 Zones - and that is not all.
As we begin our 8th school year, we are also growing and recalibrating our in-school programming. We expanded Playbook, our new model aimed at delivering a stronger, more intentional and worthwhile program to our Scholar Athletes. Getting to this place is the result of years of thoughtful planning, evaluation and hard work. Playbook focuses on three core areas: Academic Coaching and Mentoring, Health and Wellness and Post-Secondary Planning.
We couldn’t have arrived here without your support, generosity and partnership. This year also marks a new chapter for me personally, as I step into the Executive Director role. I am eager to help drive our mission forward as we aim to support more students in meaningful ways as they navigate high school, college and beyond.
We’re excited to share our Annual Scorecard with you. Thank you for being on our team and for your continued support.
Daphne Griffin

A NEW GAME PLAN
In 2015, Scholar Athletes engaged in a Theory of Change process, funded through State Street and the United Way, with the goal of creating a model that would strengthen our program and student outcomes. Through this project, we piloted The Playbook – a new model of service predicated on planning, participation and evaluation methods that are designed to engage and empower students to achieve success in their education and beyond. We are in the second year of the pilot, and Playbook has been implemented in 10 of 23 partner schools, with the goal of being fully implemented by 2020.
