Together Making a Dif ference

This past year has been an exciting one for Bellevue College (BC) and the Foundation, filled with new milestones, many events, and some great accomplishments all thanks to you, our generous donors.

This year marked the establishment of the BC Alumni

Association. Spearheaded by the Foundation, the BCAA brings together

alumni and friends to continue the BC experience.

BC was proud to host the Washington State Supreme Court on campus in November to hear arguments on three cases. During their two-day visit, the Justices toured campus and sat in on classes with students, of fered an open forum, and heard three cases. More than 900 students, faculty and staf f, alumni, and community members attended the hearings.

In January, the Foundation celebrated 50 years of academic excellence and student success at the 50th Anniversary Gala. Together we raised more than $225,000 to help BC students achieve their higher education goals.

As we look back on not merely the last year, but the last half century of quality, open-access education, we do so with sincere gratitude. Through the support of you, our visionary civic leaders, devoted faculty and staf f, proud alumni, impassioned students, and generous donors, we forge into the future with determination and enthusiasm to continue BC’s exceptional legacy.

On behalf of the Foundation, I am excited to share with you this report, which highlights just some of the many successes we have collectively achieved this year. Thank you for being a champion of quality education at BC and a great friend of the BC Foundation.

Sincerely,

Laura Celis BC Foundation Board President

Together Making a Dif ference

It has been such a pleasure to serve as interim president of Bellevue College this past year. I have been so impressed by the passion and commitment of the students, faculty and staf f, alumni, and you, our generous donors. Your investment in Bellevue College has a long lasting impact on the community and contributes to the vibrancy of our region. I saw the impact your support made on students and their ability to achieve their goals.BC is constantly refining and expanding academic programs to connect students to high-wage, in-demand industries. Not only are our programs well-respected, they’ve also received national recognition. Campus Explorer recently ranked our Interior Design program No. 7, and according to Payscale.com, BC ranked No. 25 nationwide for the mid-career pay of alumni, with an average salary of $63,400. For 2016-17, the Community for Accredited Online Schools honored BC for having the No. 4 Best Ultrasound Technician program. This year BC broke ground on a new student housing facility. The project is slated for occupancy in Fall 2018 and will accommodate 350 students, transforming the campus into a 24/7 learning community. Sustainability is a key component of the design, with the goal to achieve LEED Gold Certification status. In October, BC held its first Homecoming Week on campus. The festivities included an opening ceremony with local dignitaries and a special reception to honor 50 exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions to the College throughout BC’s history. In April, BC also hosted the first ever TEDx Bellevue College, featuring a wide variety of speakers, topics, and activities centered on the theme of “Perception.”The close of this school year brings an end to my tenure, but BC is proud to welcome Dr. Jerry Weber to the role of president. Dr. Weber brings a track record of exceptional leadership, a deep commitment to the values we cherish, and a passion for creating pathways to success for our students. I’m confident that with your continued support, Bellevue College will keep growing and evolving, helping even more students to reach high and dream big.Sincerely,

Jill Wakefield, Ed.D. BC Interim President

Awarded $276,700 in scholarships for the 2017-18 school year. 149 scholarships

were awarded to 145 deserving students based on financial need, scholastic merit, or a combination of both.

Generous donor Norman Stromer donated his home in support of Foundation scholarships. It is his hope that students who might not otherwise be able to af ford an education at BC will have the ability through these scholarship funds. Norman and his late wife Camille’s support of BC began with a scholarship endowment in 2005.

Awarded eight faculty members the Lockwood Distinguished Faculty Award. Recipients of this award were selected for exhibiting excellence in teaching and learning, institutional thought leadership, curriculum development, and professional development. Thanks to the generosity of the Lockwood Foundation, the winners of this honor received a $5,000 cash award for their contributions to BC.

Recognized five faculty and staf f members through the Margin of Excellence Awards for their outstanding commitment to BC. The Foundation awarded: Henry Amaya from Multicultural Services, Jacqueline Drak from Chemistry, Elaine Nutter from Basic & Transitional Studies, Paula McPherson from Academic Advising, and Bruce Wolcott from e-Learning. The award also includes an honorarium.

Hosted the 50th Anniversary Gala and the Become Exceptional Luncheon which combined raised over $475,000 in support of student success and innovative college programs.

Awarded $20,000 in 13 Mini-Grants for creative, program-enhancing projects that would not be funded otherwise. In a special collaboration between the Theatre Arts department and Media Arts Advanced Video Production Program, one grant provided support for set, props, and costumes for The Trifles Project. The project bridges together the two programs allowing students to act, film, produce, and edit a feature film. Another grant benefited the BOOM and SHOUT Experience, which is a one-day conference that allows Bellevue School District students of color in grades 7–12 to come together at BC to connect, find support, build confidence, and inspire them to pursue higher education.

Administered three grants through the Lockwood Faculty Excellence Awards, given to projects that exemplify academic innovation. Jennifer Prekeges of Nuclear Medicine Technology received funds to create an online course through BC Continuing Education to train individuals on how to handle hazardous, radioactive materials.

Berthe and Stanley Habib established a $250,000 endowment in support of computer science scholarships. BC started of fering a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science this past January. Previously, the Habibs created a scholarship endowment to encourage women to study science, technology, engineering, and math.

Supporting Student Success

Molli Robertson is the 2016-17 recipient of the Shirley Farnham Nursing Scholarship and the Elaine Tuttle Insurance Scholarship. This past year Molli has been working toward a Bachelor of Applied Science in Healthcare Management and Leadership, and was proud to have graduated in June.Molli, the first in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree, says “receiving a scholarship was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I was thrilled to be a recipient and was honored that I was selected. Prior to receiving the funds, I had to work a weekend job in addition to my full-time job.”This year Molli was excited to be joined on campus by her son, who is pursuing an AA transfer degree. Her daughter will also be taking part in the BC experience this fall as a Running Start student. “It is so rewarding to be sharing this experience with my children, and for us to be going af ter our educational dreams simultaneously.”Molli is enjoying her career in the healthcare industry and plans to pursue an MBA in the future. “I feel truly blessed with the opportunities that lie ahead”, she explains, “and will look back on my journey at Bellevue College with great personal elation and gratification, as well as with an appreciation for the donors who extended a helping hand to me throughout this journey.”

“I love working with younger children, and my dream job is

to be a teacher…This scholarship is not just giving me a second chance at school, but you are also helping with the inspiration of the next generation of young learners.”—Julie Chung, Habib Mathematics Scholarship

“By awarding me a scholarship, you have generously lightened my financial burden. This allows me to focus

on my classes and not when the next payment is due, give quality attention to my family and graduate at an accelerated rate. Thank you for helping me live my dreams.”— Brianna Proudfoot, James and Sandra Dagnon Scholarship

“I am extremely grateful to receive this scholarship, and truly cannot thank you enough. I expect [my classes] to be more challenging this year and am ready to meet that challenge with diligence, and extra motivation knowing that someone has invested in my education.”— Alex Worthington,

Debbie Killinger Scholarship for First Generation College Students

BC has established itself as a leader in academic innovation and using cutting-edge technology in the classroom. This past year, donor support helped make possible a Foundation grant for the collaboration project “Interactive Worlds”. This project uses virtual reality (VR), a computer-generated simulation of real life, as well as augmented reality (AR), a computer-generated simulation which goes a step further and layers enhancements on top of the real world. With VR, you can experience human anatomy. With AR, you can watch a human body pop out of your textbook.Through this project, BC is also proud to welcome Fulbright Scholar James Riggall from Tasmania, Australia. He is an expert on human/computer interaction, VR/AR, entrepreneurship, and makerspace and began working with BC faculty member and 2017 BC Foundation Margin of Excellence winner Bruce Wolcott more than seven years ago when they created the University of Tasmania Human Interface Technology laboratory.“Interactive Worlds” sets out to create a model of how people communicate with each other, use virtual worlds, and use online projects to connect between dif ferent places, communities, and even countries.
