The MPSGA is a volunteer non-proit organization with a 40-year history of conducting a State Championship for Michigan seniors, men 50 & older.
We also conduct numerous single-day tournaments throughout the
summer featuring age-based gross competition and handicap driven net
competition. (See page 6 for complete schedule.)
Our purposes are consistent with those of the USGA:1. To provide competitive golf opportunities for the membership.
2. To increase knowledge and awareness of the rules and traditions of golf.
3. To promote those values of the game which relate to good health, friendship and fair play.
2016 MPSGA State Seniors Open-Amateur
Our lagship event each year is the 3 day, 54 hole medal play champion-
ship that this year will be played on the two Polo Fields Golf & Country Club courses in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti on August 29, 30 & 31, 2016. The tourna-
ment is open to both members and non-members.
On pages 2 & 3 of this book, is a description of the light format and an application for the tournament. You will note our three championship lights include both gross and net competition. Net-only lights are also an available option.

MPSGA 2016 State Championship – Course Lengths/Flight Format
(Player Options at Polo Fields, August 29–31, 2016)
We continue to receive suggestions from some members that our
course lengths are a bit too long—and from other members, a little too short.
Our single-day tournaments are generally set up with four lights played at three course lengths. The players are grouped by handicap index with some players on the light bubbles bouncing back and forth between lights (& course lengths) from tournament to tournament. This format can also
result in a long-hitting 50 year old playing from the front tees and a short
hitting 75 year old playing from the back tees—a major concern to some of
those so affected.
The USGA, the GAM and other state golf organizations use age-appro-
priate course lengths in their tournaments (i.e. USGA /GAM Mid-Amateurs are played on shorter courses than USGA /GAM Amateurs; Senior Amateurs are played on shorter courses than Mid Amateurs—and Super-Senior and
Legend divisions are played on shorter courses than Senior divisions). How-
ever, setting tees by age alone can also result in higher handicap, younger
seniors playing from the back tees where some are just not that comfortable. In an effort to make our 2016 State Championship enjoyable and yet
challenging for all, we again want to offer several light options to give everyone the choice of selecting their own comfort zone in terms of course
length and in terms of “gross & net” or “net-only” competition.
These options will be:
1. The MPSGA State Seniors Open-Amateur Championship with a Senior Division (age 50 & up) played at about 6,300 yards, a Super-
Senior Division (age 65 & up) played at about 6,000 yards and a
Legend/Grand Master Division (age 70 & up) played at about 5,700 yards. We will recognize both gross and net performances in each
of these age groupings.
[Players qualifying for more than one age division may select the
division (and course length) where they prefer to compete]
2. A traditional 3-day net-only tournament with contestants playing at 6,000 and 5,700 yards depending on their handicap index.
In summary, our goal is to conduct our major state championship with
age appropriate tees for gross competition, while at the same time provid-
ing good net competition and comfortable course lengths for everyone.
We hope you can join us at Polo Fields in late August! A tournament
application is on the adjoining page.MPSGA—State Tournament Committee

Lee Williams and Jack McKaig were classmates at Detroit College of Law many years back. Sadly, Lee passed away this past fall -- only weeks after winning the overall low net in our 2015 state tournament. A story on Lee and his love of golf (and his enjoyment of the MPSGA) was included in the 2014 edition of this publication. Just prior to his passing -- Lee had been working with Doug King to include a write-up on Jack in our 2016 state tournament book. Here is that write-up.
JACK MC KAIGIt was Father’s Day, 1955 and I was 12 years old. My uncle and I were listening
to the playoff of the U.S. Open. Ben Hogan versus Jack Fleck, both men using Ben Hogan golf clubs which were included in the line of equipment and apparel sold by my uncle.
I was a baseball fan, with no interest in golf until I listened to Jack Fleck win that playoff. Jack Fleck was a good friend of my uncle and stayed at his home when competing in the Detroit area. Fast Forward to August of that year, the 1955 PGA scheduled for Meadowbrook CC and Jack Fleck was entered as US open Champion, AND, staying with my aunt and uncle. I was invited to attend an exhibition and the tournament itself, as the son of Jack Fleck; the excitement for a 12 year old kid is in-describable. For the next several years I was a gallery of one whenever a tournament was in the SE Michigan area. I still carry a money clip from the 1955 Pan American Open, a gift I will always cherish.
I spent the rest of that summer swinging at whatever I could ind with an old cut down three wood, anxiously awaiting my 13th summer to begin caddying. In 1956 I became a caddy at Plum Hollow GC. My goal was to someday caddy for Jack Fleck. Plum Hollow held the Western Open in 1957 but I was too new to the profession to caddy for a major tournament winner. My inal year the Motor City Open was at Meadowbrook CC. Arrangements were made for me to caddy for my hero. I spent two weeks at the course caddying for members and learning the course, much to the chagrin of the local guys who were witnessing one of their bags disappearing. I thought it was special that I would be caddying for the man that helped me learn to love the game on the irst golf course I had ever walked on. After two practice rounds and several hours of shagging practice balls, (do you remember shag bags?), I got sick and missed the tournament.
I played for Mackenzie High School, while caddying for ive years, eventually earning an Evans Scholarship my last year, which assisted me in my studies at the University of Michigan. I later graduated from Wayne State University and following two years with the US Army furthered my education at the Detroit College of Law.
My family and I moved north in 1976 to Mancelona and ten years later to Shanty Creek. The Schuss Mountain course was nine holes and the now Summit course had a slightly different conigurement. The Legend and Cedar River courses did not exist.
I irst played in the MPSGA State Seniors Open-AMA tournament in 1996 and have loved it ever since despite living out of state for a few years and then battling re-curring medical problems. I look back on my single digit handicap days and can only dream of the couple of trophies I won and the 74 I shot on the Grand Traverse Resort course, but the friendly competitors and the highly organized tournament committee make this event fun not withstanding my inability to inish on occasion and the hor-rible scores posted on the scoreboard.

Dr. Tarek Hassan
A hero physician (and golfer)
I met Dr, Hassan approximately ive years ago. My ophthalmologist recommended a Retina Specialist the day he found blood in my eyes. In fact he immediately wrote the script and told me to get to a specialist the same day! To make a very long story short, ive years later I can now see very well out of my right eye. My left eye read 20/400! That, by the way, is considered blind. The condition that I have is Macular Degeneration. The disease can lat out render you totally blind if not treated promptly. The disease is genetic and can be easily traced to your fam-
ily tree, i.e. left eye now reads 20/100, thanks to Dr. Hassan and a miracle drug called Eylea. The drug is injected directly into the eye.
This brief story though is really about this world renowned doctor, father of four, resident of Ann Arbor and a member of Barton Hills CC, This man travels and lectures all over the world, When he is home he sees patients out of three locations; Livonia, Ypsilanti and Royal Oak. He performs surgery on all kinds of eye diseases at Beaumont Hospital. He is a teacher, an author of many texts and papers, and has been extensively awarded many, many awards for his na-
tional and international work. He has also been named to the to the “Best Doctors in America” listing every year since 2000.
