Hello and thank you for your interest in Watermark University!
Your curiosity is to be commended and it may even be the key to better health. Studies
show that satisfying curiosities and learning new things can keep the mind agile and sharp.
That’s why we created Watermark University. We know that stimulating the mind and
strengthening the body has enormous benefits at any age and may even slow the process
of memory loss.
Besides being good for you, keeping your brain and the body active and engaged doesn’t
just improve your life – it’s a whole lot of fun! Enroll in a class or two that pique your
interest. I’m confident you’ll learn something new and make a few friends along the way.
While you’re at it, why not suggest a class or even volunteer to teach a subject you’re
passionate about?
Just give us a call to reserve a space in a class that intrigues you. Please keep in mind that
class space is limited, priority is given to residents and most, but not all classes are free.
We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in a Watermark University course
this semester!
Sincerely,
Tammy Geraldson

the internet! The Internet Explorer program comes with Windows and is free. There are other free
programs out there that you also may use to browse or search the internet. In this class we will look at

18 – iPAD and iPHONE WORKSHOP – More people have iPads and iPhones than ever. In this
“workshop” class we will cover one basic topic important to all iPad and iPhone users and then open the
class up for questions and help. Please bring your iPad or iPhone to the class along with your questions.
FEBRUARY 2016
1 – USING A SMALL PORTABLE DRIVE – No matter what computer you use, it is always helpful
to keep your important files on a small portable memory device such as a “thumb” or “flash” drive. If
you use the computers in The Fountains computer room you will need to use such a portable drive to
keep any files (documents, photos, or whatever) when you leave the computer room. In this class we
will show you how easy it is to use such a device so that you can take your important files and use them
on any Windows computer. All levels of computer users would find this class helpful and fun.
8 – USING MENUS AND RIBBONS – All computer programs have choices. Some programs may
have hundreds or even thousands of options or choices for you to use. In this class we will demonstrate
how many computer programs present these options to you. Menus, “ribbons”, pop-ups, notices, are just
a few ways that computers allow you to change something or to make a choice. We will look at the
most common ways a computer program allows you to select options or tools. This class will be helpful
to all levels of computer users.
15 – I-PAD WORKSHOP – Please bring your iPad questions to this workshop class and we will try to
answer them for you. If time allows we will look at some very helpful “apps” or programs you should
enjoy having on your iPad device.
MARCH 2016
7 – THE WINDOWS DESKTOP SCREEN – When you first start your Windows computer, the first
screen you see is the “desktop”. From here you start a program, change your computer settings, and,
when you are done, shutdown your computer. In addition to the program “icons” on your desktop, you
also have the “taskbar”, the “quick-launch” area, and the “system tray” areas. We will explain the
various parts of your Desktop screen (on Windows 7) and how to understand what the different areas are
for. This class will be helpful to all levels of computer users. And, as always, your questions are most
welcome.

14 – COMPUTER ORGANIZATION – Everything stored on your computer is stored as a “file”.
Every photo, document, spreadsheet, or whatever is a FILE and every file has a NAME. After you save
a few files, how to you find them again? You save photos in “My pictures” and other files in “My
documents”, but how do you ORGANIZE them? The way all files are “organized” on your computer is
in FOLDERS which are locations in your computer. You use the Windows Explorer program to help
you. In this class we will explain how to use folders and move files from one folder to another.
21 – I-PAD WORKSHOP – Bring your iPad or tablet device to the class along with your questions or
problems. If time allows after answering your questions, we will demonstrate how to use the YouTube
app and the Google Maps app.
APRIL 2016

and much more. Go anyplace on the globe and “zoom in” to an incredible level of detail. Zoom in on
your home town and see if your house is still there. Visit city landmarks and national parks. Even drop
down to street-level and look around as if you were standing right in the middle of the street! Almost
any computer device can use Google Earth and it is free. I am sure everyone, at all computer levels, will
enjoy Google Earth!
11 – WHAT IS IN A WINDOW? – From your Windows desktop screen you run a program in a
“window” and program windows have many common tools and ways to use them. You can change the
size of a window, move it around on your screen, and have more than one window open at a time.
When you are done using your computer you should close all your windows first. In this class we will
show you how to use a window no matter what program you are running in it. Please bring your
windows questions to this class and we will try to answer them for you.
