Minister’s letter: I wonder if you’re the sort of person who worries a lot? There’s certainly lots in the world we could worry about right now. And I guess we all have our fair share of things that grip our minds from time to time.

According to surveys, some of our biggest worries are health, finance, ageing and dying. Terrorism, crime and discontent are also high on the list. The most frequent time to worry is between 9pm and 3am - things somehow seem worse at night. Maybe, like me, you identify with the person who suggested that worry is like a rocking chair – it gives us something to do, but never seems to get us anywhere!

The word ‘worry’ comes from an Anglo-Saxon root meaning to ‘strangle’ or to ‘choke’. Indeed, when worries take hold, this soon squeezes the joy out of life. Rather than having life, we find that life has somehow got hold of us.

We can respond in various ways. For instance, there was once a man known for being a terrible worrier. One day, his friends noticed he was walking with a new spring in his step. ‘What’s happened?’ they asked. ‘Oh, I’ve paid someone to do all my worrying for me.’ ‘Well, how much do you pay him?’ ‘£2,000 a week.’ ‘How can you possibly afford that?’ ‘I can’t - but that’s his worry, not mine!’

Perhaps more helpful is Jesus’ advice to his friends in Matthew 6 (from v.25). ‘Who can add a single hour to their life by worrying?’ he says, ‘don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will look after itself.’ They have no need to worry, he explains, because we have a heavenly Father in God, who loves and cares for each one of us. And this is no shallow form of escapism that ducks the tangible reality of things that really do worry us. Jesus is realistic enough to advocate taking ‘one day at a time, because each day has enough trouble of its own’. His confidence comes not from playing down the significance of the things we face, but acknowledging the bigger and deeper reality of God, and inviting us to engage with this deeper reality.

If there are things keeping us awake at night, why not offer a prayer and ask God to demonstrate just how real he is? The other thing is to chat with a friend, or give us a call – none of us needs to be on our own.

EASTER IS EARLY THIS YEAR Palm Sunday is therefore on Sunday 20th March when we begin our Sunday Mass outdoors and then process into Church carrying our Palms in Procession. Easter Sunday is the following Sunday 27th March.

HOLY WEEK begins on Palm Sunday but the major three services called the Easter Triduum are at the end of the week, and everyone is encouraged to attend them as follows :-

HOLY THURSDAY 24th March. THE MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER is at 8.00pm. We remember the night when Jesus took the bread and wine and told us to do it in memory of him. It includes the traditional washing of feet by the priest and concludes with the Stripping of the Altar and a Watch of Prayer till Midnight

ON GOOD FRIDAY 25th March THE LITURGY OF THE PASSION is at 3.00pm. We read together the whole story of the suffering and death of Jesus and then after solemn prayers, a cross with the figure of Jesus is placed in front of us and we all have a chance to go up and look at the cross and, if we wish, reverence it with a kiss.

ON HOLY SATURDAY 26th March. THE EASTER VIGIL and FIRST MASS OF EASTER is at 8.30pm. It begins outside in the dark where we light the Easter Fire. From that we light the great Easter Candle and from that candle we light our own candles thus bringing the light of Jesus into our darkened church. After solemn readings, Easter proper begins with bells and lights and alleluias and we celebrate the risen Presence of Jesus with us always.

Continued……….. STATIONS OF THE CROSS is a time of prayer and song and meditation following the path of Jesus to his death on the cross using the pictures (The Stations) around the walls of our Church. This is taking place on Tuesdays during Lent at 5.00pm preceded by Vespers and Benediction at 4.30pm. Mass follows as usual at 5.30pm.

THE YEAR OF MERCY has seen us learning about the Works of Mercy during the Sundays of Lent as Father Martin is preaching about them. We are trying to put them into practice. They are:- The Corporal works of mercy – to feed the hungry – give drink to the thirsty – clothe the naked – welcome the stranger – visit the sick – visit the imprisoned – bury the dead The Spiritual Works of mercy – to counsel the doubtful – instruct the ignorant – admonish sinners – comfort the afflicted – forgive offences – bear patiently those who do us ill – pray for the living and the dead.

OUR LOCAL HOLY DOOR for the Year of Mercy is at the Oratory Church of St Aloysius in central Oxford. As requested by Pope Francis, there will be a Day of Prayer there as in many other Catholic Churches all round the world on Saturday 5th March, so do book the date now if you can make it.

ADVANCE NOTICE of OUR BRING AND SHARE EASTER SUPPER on Friday 15th April. Book the date now please. OUR ANNUAL MEETING is on Tuesday 12th April.

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL – LISA’S NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 15th FEBRUARY 2016

Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations & “The Big Lunch” The weekend of the 11th and 12th June 2016 will be a national celebration weekend for the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Parish Councillors are planning to hold a “Big Lunch” on the 12th June – more details to follow. Please hold this date in your diaries!

North Eynsham proposals As many of you will be aware, there are some provisional proposals being put forward for a development of up to 1,200 homes and a Park and Ride site to the North of Eynsham by the A40. The Chairman of Eynsham came and spoke at our Parish Council meeting to give their Council’s view of the proposals. They are concerned about the local infrastructure being able to support that many homes plus the impact on traffic although the possibility to re-route the A40 was something they would like to see explored. This planning proposal and possibly another even larger scheme between Eynsham and Freeland are likely to be discussed at our Annual Parish Meeting (see below).

Annual Parish Meeting This is just a preliminary note to let you know that the Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Monday 4th April at 8.00pm in the Village Hall. Please make a note of the date and further details will follow next month. Preliminary topics for discussion are: Parish Council Elections, Play Park Development Update, The Big Lunch & Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations, Plans for the Garden of Remembrance, Could Eynsham & Freeland merge? New plans being proposed.

Dog waste bin As I am sure many of you will have noticed by now, a new dog waste bin has now been installed by the entrance to the woods in Parklands.

New noticeboard You may have noticed that we now have a lovely new notice board inside the bus shelter by the village hall. The two outer sections are open style for residents to place their notices, and the inner lockable section is for Parish Council information.

Play Park development Work on developing the Freeland Play Park will commence after Easter and will take approximately 2 weeks to complete. New equipment will be added and landscaping work will be carried out in due course after the equipment installation.

Defibrillator & CPR demonstration Some defibrillator and CPR demonstrations will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 30th March over 2 sessions. The first one will be held at 2.00pm and the second will be held at 7.00pm, both sessions will be for about an hour. There is no charge to attend, so do go along and make sure you know how to use our village defibrillators and carry out CPR - in case the need should arise! Beth Elgar, Regional School and Community Training Coordinator for St John Ambulance will be running the training. Continued………..

Freeland is due to have Parish Council

elections in May this year.

Are you looking for a new challenge?

Consider becoming a Freeland Parish Councillor!

Being a Parish Councillor is an interesting and varied role.

Here are just a few of the things you can be involved in:

Dealing with planning applications for the village;

Helping to develop the Play Park on the Playing Field;

Looking at ways to improve transport links;

Helping to develop the Garden of Remembrance;

Ensuring footpaths, grass verges and trees around Freeland are

maintained and enhanced.

Some of the projects the Council has completed over the past few

years are:

Village Hall - The building of the new Village Hall and Sports

Changing Rooms;

Memorial Trees – 15 memorial trees were planted along Wroslyn

Road to commemorate the 15 Freeland residents who died in WW1

& 2;

Play Park Grant – a £50k grant has been secured to develop the

Freeland Play Park with additional equipment and landscaping;

Defibrillators – 2 defibrillators have been installed in the village;

Little Free Library - has been installed on Wroslyn Road and is

proving very successful;

Allotments - setting up of the allotments which have now been

running for 3 years;

Bus shelter – new bus shelter installed by Village Hall;

If you would like to make a difference to this beautiful rural village

then the Elections in May are your best opportunity:

Contact Lisa Smith, Parish Clerk for details of how to be nominated for

election – phone: 01993 880067 or Email: [email protected]

FREELAND PRE-SCHOOL SPONSORED ZUMBA CLASSES Freeland Pre-school is sponsoring a monthly Sunday evening Zumba class at 8.00pm in the Freeland Village Hall to raise funds for the school. The dates are: 13th March, 24th April, 29th May, 26th June & 31st July. More information can be found on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/zumbawithjosie/ or by e-mail: [email protected]

********************************* FREELAND GARDENING CLUB The meeting on Monday 25th January was one of the best attended that we have had. Timothy Walker, who was the Director of Oxford Botanic Garden, returned to give us Part 2 of his ‘Plant Hunting in Australia’ talk. He mentioned that the gulf stream had caused 5 ‘Mediterranean’ areas of climate around the world, one of these being western Australia. In this area something like 3,000 plants survive which are not found anywhere else. He described a few of these then mentioned the different ways some were fertilised in order to survive. Fire played a large part in the life cycle of some plants. Not only are his talks full of interest covering a large number of subjects, but he had a lovely sense of humour so his lectures are never boring. He has already got a date to return to the Club next year!

On Monday 22nd February a new speaker, Pauline Pears, is coming to talk about ‘Growing a Healthy Garden without Pesticides’. This is followed on Monday 21st March at 7.30pm in Freeland Hall by a return visit of Howard Drury, another popular speaker, whose subject is ‘Berried Treasure’. During the autumn and winter berries play an important part in providing colour in the garden as well as being a great source of food for birds and animals. Maybe he will suggest some more unusual ones for us to try.

Tickets are now on sale for our day visit to Exbury Gardens in Hampshire on 14th May. This garden specialises in azaleas and rhododendrons and during May is an amazing blaze of colour and variety, well worth a visit! Visitors are very welcome to take the opportunity of this door to door transport to the Gardens. For information contact Brian Wildblood on 883968.

The rain and wind has played havoc with some of the daffodils coming into flower around the village but there are still many giving us a lovely annual burst of colour after the winter.

Plants will begin to appear on the Bring and Buy Plant sales at the hall meetings ready for planting to fill our gardens this spring and summer. Visitors very welcome to all meetings at £3 a meeting.

For further information about the Gardening Club please contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Road or ring 881420.

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY NEWS Thank you to everyone that completed our online survey last month. Here are some of the positive comments we received.

“Great idea and a brilliant addition to the village” “a brilliant resource which my children love contributing to and learning from” “a fantastic community asset” “it’s fabulous to be able to collect a book at anytime” “more villages should have one”

Some people have said they are unsure how to donate books. If they fit, simply put the books in the Little Free Library yourself, otherwise please leave them by our front door, at 138 Wroslyn Road. Thank you.

As always, you never know what you will find when you look inside the Little Free Library. Happy reading!

FREELAND WI

The WI was a hive of activity at its meeting on Monday 8th February. We started preparation for our Easter Market which is to be held on Sunday 20th March in the Village Hall. We knitted, we sewed bunting, we made Easter baskets, hearts sank when Rosie James said she wanted 25 of each colour. A group made posters to advertise the event and a start was made on some bunting for Freeland WI.

The Easter Market will be a community event with activities for children, face painting, crafts, Easter Novelties, Bottle Tombola, Family photography, Phoenix Cards, Chocolate will be in plentiful supply and a WI event could not occur without a supply of cake, tea and coffee. The profits will go towards the bench to be placed at the bus stop and to boost WI funds.

On March 14th eight of us will attend a day at Denman College to see the facilities that are available for learning and of course to enjoy a 3 course lunch.

Our next meeting on Monday 14th March at 8pm in the Village Hall, will be our AGM when we hope to celebrate a second successful year of Freeland WI. Our guest will be Stella Oakes who is an Oxfordshire WI District Adviser.

The elements have left me with very little to report apart from a handful of games. The Firsts have moved up to third at the time of writing, and despite another Hole red card, they are only three points off top spot.

The Reserves, and Under 12s haven't had any joy in getting a game in, and the Under 16s played only their fifth league game of the season in a one all draw with Cropredy

We look forward to seeing you all again next February! Many thanks to you all.

THE UNACCEPTED FREELAND RAMBLERS February 2016

I’m always amazed at the number of people who attend our rambles on Sunday mornings, this one was the best part of 6 miles in threatening conditions. Why 8 excited ramblers set forth on a damp morning that improved with every step, beats me! The usual ill feeling still prevails, obviously I can’t go into details here but a director of the logistics team flounced off in a hissy fit and swore never to return when he found himself overruled by the majority of ramblers not allowing him to make any right hand turns, one trouble maker wandered off in a southerly direction never to be seen again, another complained bitterly when confronted with a ‘hill’ and a Mrs Trellis wants an apology for ‘excessive interference’ (don’t ask). Yet another indecisive AGM is imminent.

Any newcomers (please) welcome at the next exciting event, we look forward to meeting up, you’ll never know how bad it is until you try it.

The Oxfordshire Yeoman, 9.30am, Sunday 6th March, 2016. From your Rambling Presidento and London Underground map owner

FREELAND CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Aspiring and achieving together

Can you help? We are looking for new Governors to join our committee. We are an enthusiastic group of people who want the best for the children at Freeland School. Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to play in raising school standards. The role of the governing board is absolutely key to the effectiveness of a school.

Do you think you have a few hours each month to support the school’s development?

The role of the governing board is a strategic one, its key functions are to: set the aims and objectives for the school set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of
