Meet the Head Coach

Head Coach Bob Nannig

Bob Nannig is in his second stint guiding the Anchorwomen, having manned the helm since the 2011-12 season. Nannig was previously the head coach from 2003-07 and was also an assistant coach at RIC in 2002-03.

Nannig had one of his most successful seasons guiding the Anchorwomen in 2015-16, sending a pair of gymnasts to the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships where they finished 13th and 14th. The Anchorwomen also snapped a 16-match losing streak dating back to Mar. 4, 2012 when they topped Ithaca, 179.275-164.050, on Feb 21, 2016. The win also marked

the first time RIC has defeated or finished ahead of another NCAA women's gymnastics program in 33 straight competitions dating back to the 2012 ECAC Championships.

Nannig started the Anchorwomen women's gymnastics program on the road to recovery in 2011-12 and was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Gymnastics Coach of the Year as two RIC gymnasts qualified for the NCGA Championships. In each of the two ensuing seasons, Nannig once again sent two RIC gymnasts to the NCGA Championships.

During the four campaigns Nannig ran the gymnastics program, four gymnasts qualified for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships.

Nannig has an extensive career in coaching, which spans over 30 years. He served as the Director of Boys’ Gymnastics at Aim High Academy in East Greenwich for six years. He has extensive experience in camp coaching, first at URI’s summer gymnastics camp, having worked there from 1995-2001, and then at the Woodward Camp in Pennsylvania for two sessions. Nannig also served as the owner and head coach of the North Kingstown Gymnastics Center from 1982-87. He previously served as the gymnastics coach at Kingston Dance & Gymnastics from 1981-1982.

Nannig received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Springfield College in 1981. While at Springfield, he lettered in gymnastics from 1977-80. He earned a master’s degree in physical education administration from the University of Rhode Island in 1999.

In addition to his coaching duties, Nannig also works as a physical education teacher at Cranston High School West and has taught in the school system for 27 years. He was honored as the R.I.A.H.P.E.R.D. Secondary Education Teacher of the Year in 2002.

Nannig lives in North Kingstown, Rhode Island with his wife JoAnn. They have two daughters Haley (23) and Jade (29).

Assistant Coach Monica Mesalles Massi

Monica Mesalles Nassi enters her second season as an assistant women’s gymnastics coach. She assists Head Coach Bob Nanning with all phases of the RIC women’s gymnastics program, including recruiting, scouting, adminis-tering practice and meet coaching.

Last year, Monica was recognized nationally for her efforts in the NCGA and was named the East Region Women’s Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year.

Nassi had a successful collegiate career at the University of Bridgeport, an NCAA Division II gymnastics powerhouse. A four-year competi-tor for the Purple Knights, Nassi earned USAG National Championship honors seven times dur-ing her career, including three straight titles on floor. A three-time captain, she was a member of four straight USAG National Championship squads. Her highest scores were vault with a 9.95, beam with a 9.9 and floor with a 9.95.

Prior to her time at Bridgeport, Nassi was a member of the Spanish National Team that finished fifth at both the 2004 Olympics in

Athens and the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim. She also won the gold on floor and placed fifth on beam at the 2005 World Cup in Germany. Nassi was also a six-time champion at the Spanish National Championships.

Nassi is a 2013 graduate of the University of Bridgeport where she earned a bachelor’s degree in International Business with a minor in finance.
