TRICIA BINFORD HEAD COACH 12th YEAR

When Tricia Binford took over the Montana State women’s basketball program in the spring of 2005, she inherited a program in search of stabil-

ity and someone to guide the Bobcats back to the upper echelons of the Big Sky Conference. Now, 12 years later, the former Boise State and WNBA standout is MSU’s longest tenured

coach as well as its winningest in history with an unprecedented level of excel-lence on the court, in the classroom and within the community. Those three hallmarks make Bobcat basketball one of the most respected programs in the country. On the court, Binford’s squads have played for the Big Sky title twice and have made ten straight postseason ap-pearances, including owning the No. 1 seed in 2015-16. In the classroom, the Bobcats have been ranked among the top 12 academic teams in the nation at the NCAA Division I level in six of the last 12 years. And, within the community, the MSU women’s program gave over 300+ hours of service. Not too many programs in the nation can boast a trifecta such as the likes in which Binford and staff have put together at Montana State. Binford has notched 186 career victo-ries at Montana State, which ranks fi rst on MSU’s all-time women’s basketball coaching ladder and fourth in Big Sky history. In her 11 years in the Gallatin Valley, Binford has produced a whopping 75 Big Sky Conference All-Academic hon-orees; 27 Big Sky Conference Players of the Week; 19 All-Big Sky Conference performers; one Two-Time Academic All America; fi ve CoSIDA Academic All District VII recipients; one Big Sky MVP - Jasmine Hommes; two Big Sky Confer-ence Defensive Players of the Year; two Big Sky Newcomers of the Year; one Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year; two Big Sky Top Reserves of the Year; one All-America Honorable Mention in Katie Bussey in 2012; and four MSU/Big Sky Conference Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Binford became the 11th Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Montana State on April 13, 2005. Prior to MSU, Binford, served two seasons at Utah State. At USU, Binford earned her coach-ing wings under head coach Raegan

Scott-Pebley. The duo helped reestablish the Aggie program following a 16-year hiatus. With the Aggies, Binford was responsible for recruiting, defense, and guard play. Binford also served as an assistant coach at her alma mater - Boise State University - from 1999-2001. Binford was the 31st overall pick in the 1998 WNBA draft, and played professionally with the Cleveland Rockers from 1999-02, where she participated on the 2001 Eastern Conference Championship team. She played with the Utah Starzz from 1998-99. She also played professionally in Austra-lia for two years, including stints with the NWBL’s Brisbane Blazers, Latrobe Demons and Launceston Tornadoes. Playing in the NWBL in 1997, she set a single-game scoring record with 67 points - which was part of a quadruple-double along with 14 assists, ten steals and ten rebounds. As Tricia Bader, she was a three-time All-Big Sky Conference selection on some of the best teams in Boise State history. She led the Broncos to a national ranking and the NCAA tournament. Binford was also a member of the 1993 West Team at the U.S. Olympic Festival coached by current Connecticut head man Geno Auriemma. For her efforts, she was named the 1996 Idaho NCAA Woman of the Year and was inducted in the Boise State Hall of Fame in 2001. Binford left Boise State with the school’s career assists record and was second in steals. She posted a career 1,171 points — all from the point guard position. Binford prepped at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale, Colo., where she was the Colorado Player of the Year and a Street and Smith’s High School All-American in 1991. She received her degree in criminal jus-tice from Boise State in 1995. PERSONAL INFO: Born on Feb. 26, 1973 in Decatur, IL...daughter of Jim and Lyn Bader...has a sister Kristin Hall and a brother Jeff...husband Todd graduated from Idaho (‘96)...two children, Justin and Brooklyn.

THAT WAS THE GAME THAT WAS: Montana State point-guard Hannah Cau-dill was under the weather all week heading into MSU’s road series at Idaho and Eastern Washington. The Spokane product showed no signs of being quarantined from the team bus with a career-high 23 points, including a school-record matching seven 3-pointers, as the Bobcats cruised past Eastern Washing-ton 72-61, Saturday afternoon at Reese Court. “Hannah had a fantastic weekend lead-ing the team,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We made it a point of emphasis to turn the corner in taking care of the ball versus pressure teams. I’m proud that we came away from the weekend with two of our lowest turnover games.” The opening period featured six lead changes and three ties before a Peyton Fer-ris free throw gave the Bobcats a one-point advantage. Montana State used an 11-2 run midway through the second frame to open up a 33-22 lead following an Oliana Squires layup with 3:31 left in the half. Eastern Washington whittled the lead to three-points at intermission closing the quarter on a 12-4 run. The Eagles were able to get back into the game under the boards, out-rebounding the Bobcats 20-13 in the fi rst 20-minutes. “We challenged them at halftime about our rebounding,” Binford said. “We didn’t win the boards, but I thought our third quar-ter effort was tremendous.” MSU out-scored EWU 19-6 in the third quarter, holding the Eagles to 18.8 percent from the fi eld. Caudill and Riley Nordgaard jump started the Bobcat surge combining on three-of-fi ve 3-point attempts. Montana State held a 16-point cushion heading into the fi nal stanza. The Bobcats took their largest lead at 61-42 with 8:22 remaining on a Delany Junkermier jumper, and cruised down the stretch for its fourth consecutive win, and its fi rst Big Sky Conference road sweep of the season. Caudill fi nished connecting on seven-

of-11 from beyond the arc and added a game-high seven assists. Nordgaard also hit double-digits with 16, including four 3-point-ers. Ferris, Junkermier and Madeline Smith all ended with eight points, apiece. “Eastern Washington attacked our post play well,” Binford said. “I thought the team responded well to fi nd the open shooters. Both Hannah and Riley were hot which helped us get off to a great start, especially in the third quarter.” Eastern Washington was led by Tisha Phil-lips with 18 points and four assists.

SCOUTING THE LADY GRIZ: Montana enters Saturday’s game 3-18 overall and 0-10 in Big Sky Conference action. UM’s three victories have come over NCAA Divi-sion I Incarnate Word, and Frontier Confer-ence foes Great Falls and Rocky Mountain College. Redshirt freshman Taylor Goligoski is the only Lady Griz player in double-fi gure scoring at 11.2 points per game. Last week-end, Montana dropped a 64-57 decision to Eastern Washington, before suffering a 75-50 setback at Idaho. Goligoski and Hailey Nicholson paced Montana in the two games averaging 8.5 points per contest, while Emma Stockholm chipped in 8.0 ppg. Under the boards, the Lady Griz have been led by Mekayla Isaak and McKenzi Johnston at 5.3 and 4.9 rebounds per contest, respectively. Goligoski, a 5-8 guard from Hamilton, is also Montana’s threat from behind the 3-point arc. On the season, she has connected on 27-of-88 attempts - 30.7 percent. Head Coach and Lady Griz All-American Shannon Schweyen is in her 1st season at UM.

BUELLER: Peyton Ferris, a two-time Big Sky Top Reserve of the Year, came off the bench in all 31 games last season. This year, Ferris has started every game. She leads the team, and is third in the Big Sky, averag-ing 17.1 points per game. Ferris is third on the squad in rebounding at 6.9 per contest, which is eighth in the league. Ferris joined MSU’s 1,000-point club with a season-best 32 points at North Dakota. Currently, she is 18th on MSU’s all-time scoring chart, and fi fty points away from surpassing Liz Holz (86-89) for the 17th spot. Ferris, who was voted 2016-17 preseason Big Sky MVP, recorded her only double-double of the year with 11 points and ten boards vs. Great Falls. Heading into last weekend, Ferris had put together eight straight double-fi gure scoring games, before Eastern Washington held her to just eight points on three-of-13 from the fl oor. Last year, Ferris fi nished eighth in the nation in fi eld-goal percentage shooting at a 58 percent clip.
