2016-17 SPIDER MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

2016-17 SPIDER MEN’S BASKETBALL | RICHMONDSPIDERS.COM | @SPIDERMBB | #ONERICHMOND

LAST MEETING BOX SCORE

The Richmond men's basketball team let a late-game lead slip away for the second time in as many home games this season, falling to UMBC 70-68 Saturday in the Robins Center.

The Spiders led by seven with under four minutes remaining, but the Retrievers (3-0) went on a 13-4 run to close the game, capped by a steal and dunk by Cavell Johnson with 3.2 second left.

Last Saturday night, Richmond had an 11-point lead with just over four minutes left against Norfolk State, but a 16-2 run to close the game sent the Spiders to the loss. Richmond is dressing an extremely young team - with 10 of the 13 active players in their freshmen or sophomore year. The youth pulled out an overtime win at East Carolina on Tuesday, but Saturday's final minutes in the Robins Center were eerily similar to last Saturday night.

"With so many young guys it's hard, that's the nature of being so young," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "It's going to be up and down."

Four of Richmond's games have been decided by three points or less, with the Spiders 2-2 in those games. The problem has been the two home games when Richmond has not been able to sustain leads in the closing minutes.

"I really don't know what it is," sophomore Ryan Butler said. "We're right there every single game. We can't seem to close. We can't get a stop when we need to. If we make one play, we get one stop, they have to start fouling."

Richmond (2-3) shot 49-percent from the field and scored 38 points in the paint, but the Retrievers would not go away. The Spiders took their largest lead of the game with 4:09 to play at 64-57, but UMBC came back to tie the game at 68-68 with 29 seconds left and forced the Spiders into a turnovers which turned into a dunk at the other end.

A desperation 3-pointer by the Spiders was offline as UMBC won its second-straight game in an Atlantic 10 arena. The Retrievers defeated La Salle on Tuesday night 76-69.

Richmond freshman Kevin Anderson led the Spiders with a career-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Sophomore Ryan Butler had 11 points, making two 3-pointers, and had six rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Sophomore Dan Geriot had 10 points and senior Oumar Sylla had nine points and eight rebounds.

Senior Oumar Sylla had nine points and eight rebounds and sophomore David Gonzalvez also had nine points.

"I thought we got some good contributions from a number of different guys," Mooney said. "We had six guys with nine or more points, so that's good balanced scoring."

Johnson led the Retrievers with a season-high 20 points. Brian Hodges added 17, Darryl Proctor 14 and Ray Barbosa 11.

Scouting UMBCThe Retrievers come to the Robins Center on a three-game winning streak and a 7-1 record which includes a victory over Duquesne. UMBC's only loss came to Navy.

The Retrievers lead the America East conference in scoring (85.3 ppg), field goal shooting (50.1), assists (15.4) and blocks (2.9). Jairus Lyles has averaged 21.3 ppg with 5.0 rebounds per contest to lead UMBC.

Head coach Ryan Odom is in his first season after a year as head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne last year. He was the interim head coach at Charlotte in 2015, for his only other Division I head coaching experience. Odom is the son of former Wake and South Carolina head coach Dave Odom.

Series vs. UMBCSaturday marks just the second game all-time against UMBC. The Retrievers defeated Richmond in a nail-biter back in 2007 at the Robins Center, 70-68.

Defensive PressureAfter an uncharacteristic season of poor defense last year, the Spiders have employed a mix of man and the traditional matchup zone that UR used to employ exclusively. The Spiders have also used Khwan Fore in full-court pressure situations.

The Spiders defense currently ranks fifth in the league in scoring (68.0) and second in opponent field goal percentage (38.8). The Spiders are also fifth with 7.5 steals per game.

Scoring StreakT.J. Cline has now reached double figures in 21 straight games and 28 of his last 29 dating back to last season. He has 62 career double-figure scoring games, and tallied his second career double-double vs. Boston College.

Last year, Terry Allen reached double figures in 31 straight games and Kevin Anderson holds the record at 36 during the Mooney era.

Cline has also scored at least 20 points in three straight games. The last time a player did it in

four consecutive games was Kendall Anthony in 2014. The school record is six straight 20-point games, set by Johnny Newman twice in 1986.

Cline's Big WeekT.J. Cline had quite a week over the Thanksgiving Holiday. He averaged 19.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a near triple-double against Maryland and a double-double against Boston College. He earned Barclays Center Classic All-Tournament honors and then was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. On Tuesday, Cline's first person account in The Players' Tribune was published to national acclaim.

Jones-Cline ConnectionT.J. Cline and ShawnDre’ Jones are one of the Atlantic 10’s best duos, especially in the pick and roll and pick and pop. They've combined for over 40 points in three of UR's eight games. They are one of just two duos in the Atlantic 10 to each rank in the top 10 of the conference in scoring.

P-R-A MachineT.J. Cline is currently averaging 18.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game.

He is one of just two players in the country (N.C. Central's Patrick Cole being the other) to average at least 18-7-5 in points, rebounds and assists in a game.

Cline nearly tallied a triple-double against Maryland, scoring 18 points with nine rebounds and nine assists. No player has recorded a triple-double in Richmond spider history.

Assist To...The Spiders have always run an offense with constant motion and crisp passes that lead to shots in rhythm. Richmond is at its best when every player on the court is setting up someone else for a shot.

This year, the Spiders rank fifth in the league in assists (14.9) and second in assist-turnover ratio (1.2). UR has assisted on 119 of 205 field

goals for a ratio of .580, with 10 different players tallying at least one assist so far.

Leaning On The FreshmenRichmond's highly touted freshmen class have already played significant roles in Richmond's first six games.

De'Monte Buckingham, Nick Sherod and Grant Golden have shown promise in offensive and rebounding production, but have also been fantastic on intangible "hustle" plays like loose balls, charges and keeping possessions alive. Buckingham currently leads the team with 10 blocks.

The trio have combined for an average for 49.7 minutes per contest. That marks the most combined minutes for Spider freshmen since the 2012-13 season.

Marshall Wood Finding His RangeAfter an inauspicious start, senior Marshall Wood has found his range again as one of the Spiders' best long-range marksmen. He hit four threes against RMU, three treys against Hampton, and went 4-4 against Maryland. He currently leads the team in three-point shooting percentage at 43.8.

Last season, Wood hit seven threes in a game on two occasions, coming just one trey away from the school record.

Johnson Earning His TimeSophomore Julius Johnson has seemed to cement his place as a starter and made his presence felt against Boston College. He scored a career-high 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, also grabbing six rebounds. Johnson is now averaging 4.4 rebounds per game, good for third on the team.

Jones Takes Over In OpenerShawnDre’ Jones displayed tremendous mettle in Richmond’s tough season-opening win over VMI. He shot 9-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three and 9-of-11 from the foul line. He also had three assists and three steals. With the game tied and less than 15 seconds remaining, Jones drove the left side and forced a foul on his shot. His free

throws on the personal foul and eventual technical gave Richmond its three-point win.

Jones’ 31-point game marked the first 30-point effort in a season opener since Kevin Steenberge (30) in 2004 against Seton Hall.It was also just the 19th 30-point game since 2000 by any Richmond Spider. Jones was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week.

Sherod Comes Out StrongOn opening night, Nick Sherod became the first true freshman to start in a season opener since the 2006-07 season when three freshmen started (David Brewster, Brian Morris, Dan Geriot). Sherod went on grab a game-high nine rebounds in his debut and score five points.

Success Against The Power 5Over the weekend, Richmond took No. 23 Maryland to overtime and then turned around and beat Boston College of the ACC by double digits. In Mooney's tenure, the Spiders have racked up 20 wins over power conference teams.

Preseason PraiseNamed All-Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team, T.J. Cline has created quite a reputation heading into this season after his high scoring last year.

Sports Illustrated projected him to finish fifth in scoring among all D-I players this season. ESPN’s John Gasaway listed Cline among the Top 25 Players in College Basketball, entering this season. CBS’ Jon Rothstein tabbed Cline as one of the “Most Underrated Players in College Basketball,” while the rest of the CBS editorial team ranked Cline 73rd in the country for returning players. NCAA.com’s Brian Mull listed Cline among the game’s top big men with an outside shooting touch.

Cline was also selected to the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.

1,000 Point ClubRobins Center has hosted a lot of pregame 1,000-point ceremonies over the last several years and this November is no different.

Senior ShawnDre’ Jones surpassed 1,000 career points at the end of last season at George Mason. Senior T.J. Cline eclipsed 1,000 points with his 15-point effort to open the season.

Since 2009, Richmond has had at least one 1,000-point scorer on the court in all but one season. Five of the top 13 scorers in school history have graduated since 2010, and Cline is the 10th 1,000-point scorer under Coach Chris Mooney.

Take Me Home TonightRichmond is 92-27 at home over the last eight seasons, winning six of the last seven home games vs. ranked teams, including a double OT win over No. 22 VCU on 2/25.

Richmond’s 16 home wins in 2014-15 is tops for the most wins in any single season at the Robins Center.

In 2015-16, Richmond averaged 6,435 fans per game, ranking fourth in the A-10. It was the highest average attendance since the 1992-93 season.

Best In The A-10Over the last nine years, Richmond has won 87 conference games, the second-most among all A-10 schools (just one win behind Dayton). Richmond is one of just four A-10 teams to not suffer an overall losing season in any of the last eight years.

Over that same span, the Spiders have won 13 games against ranked teams, beating out every other Atlantic 10 team for ranked wins. Coach Mooney’s 13 Top-25 wins rank higher than any other coach in Richmond history.

With Richmond’s win against Boston College in November, the Spiders have now won 20 games against power-conference programs under Coach Mooney.

Rich Athletic LineageRichmond’s basketball roster is filled with the sons of standout athletes who passed down their athletic prowess.

Most notably, T.J. Cline is the son of Sacramento Kings assistant coach and Hall of Fame women’s basketball player Nancy Lieberman. T.J.’s father, Tim Cline, also played ball with the Washington Generals.

Freshman Nick Sherod is the son of E.J. Sherod who played basketball at ODU. Nick’s grandfather, Edmund, was a Hall of Famer at VCU before playing for the New York Knicks.

ShawnDre’ Jones’ father played basketball at Virginia State, while Marshall Wood’s uncle played football at JMU. Khwan Fore’s mother ran track at Emporia State and Paul Friendshuh’s mother played volleyball at UW-Eau Claire.

Grant Golden’s father played at Fairfield University and he had two grandfathers that played collegiate football. De’Monte Buckingham’s father played at Jefferson-Huguenot-Wythe High School.

Next season’s signing class Bryce Schneider whose father, Jeff, played basketball at Virginia Tech.

Summer TripThis past summer, the Spiders journeyed to Europe and visited Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Over two weeks, the team explored historic Dublin, attended a hurling match, boated down the Rhine, biked through Amsterdam, did a zip line and cave laser tag and played four games against local competiton.

Pro SpidersThe Spiders have a long history of turning basketball players into successful professionals. On the court, Richmond has had at least 38 players play in the NBA or overseas, including 2011 graduate Justin Harper on the Detroit Pistons last season. Harper and Kevin Anderson are currently under contract in the NBA D-League.

During Coach Mooney’s tenure, a graduating player from all but one season has gone on to play professional basketball, for a total of 16 former players with pro teams since 2006.

The Spiders have also produced a number of front-office pros in the NBA. Former star Kenny Atkinson was named head coach of the Brooklyn Nets this offseason and he brought former Spider Chris Fleming along as an assistant coach. Former standout Curtis Blair is an NBA referee. Recent graduate Zach Chu was named an assistant coach for the D-League’s Texas Legends and Dan Geriot won an NBA title last year as video coordinator for the Cleveland Cavaliers, a role he retains this season.

Six former players are also coaches in the college ranks this season.

2017 Signees Richmond men’s basketball announced the signings of five players for the 2017 signing class.

2016-17 SPIDER MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

2016-17 SPIDER MEN’S BASKETBALL | RICHMONDSPIDERS.COM | @SPIDERMBB | #ONERICHMOND

Richmond received letters of intent from Bryce Schneider (6-5, Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Jacob Gilyard (5-10, Kansas City, Mo.), Nathan Cayo (6-7, Montreal, Canada), Tomas Verbinskis (6-7, Weston, Fla.) and AJ Ford (6-8, St. Petersburg, Fla.)

Hailing from Myrtle Beach, S.C., Schneider comes to Richmond from a rich basketball lineage. Standing at 6-5, Schneider plays with terrific pace and has a good feel for the game with tremendous versatility. He will be attending Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach this year after playing for Myrtle Beach High School last season.

Schneider averaged 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in 22 contests during his junior season at Myrtle Beach HS. He led the Seahawks to the Class 3A state playoffs. He has played for the Big Shots Elite AAU team where he was a tournament MVP of a May tournament that saw his team win the tournament title.

The Spiders will continue a long legacy of lightning quick point guards with the signing of Gilyard out of The Barstow School in Kansas City. Last year, Gilyard averaged 17 points, six assists and four steals a game.

A hard-nosed, versatile guard that sees the floor and is a prolific scorer, Gilyard plays for the KC RUN GMC AAU team. PrepHoops.com ranked Gilyard as the fourth-best recruit in Missouri’s 2017 recruiting class.

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Cayo comes to Richmond as a 6-7 athletic forward. Known for his leaping and agility, Cayo will play above the rim in his Spider uniform.

Last season, Cayo averaged 19.6 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game playing for College Jean De Brebeuf, a Canadian preparatory school.

Wing shooter Tomas Verbinskis currently attends Sagemont School in Weston, Fla., the alma mater of current Spider Joe Kirby. Verbinskis is originally from Lithuania, but moved to the United States for high school. Verbinskis played on the U16 Lithuanian National Team in the FIBA Euro championships.

Verbinskis has excelled on one of the state’s prestigious high school programs and averaged 12 points, four rebounds and two assists per game last season.

UR’s final signee is 6-8 forward AJ Ford out of St. Petersburg, Fla. Although home schooled, Ford plays on the St. Petersburg HS team and AAU for the CP25 Southeast Elite team. Along with his two triplet brothers, Ford has led St. Petersburg to consecutive state semis.

Ford’s older brother, Quincy, played collegiately at Northeastern and has played for the Utah Jazz.

All TV, All The Time2016-17 marks the first year that every single Spider basketball home game will be televised. Along with national games on ESPN, CBS Sports, NBC Sports and American Sports Network, Richmond's SpiderTV will also produce home games on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and local station WTVR-CBS 6.

Regionally televised games will also be available online through the Atlantic 10 Network, while selected games will be streamed for free on Facebook LIVE. Richmond was one of the first teams in the country to do this against ODU on Nov. 14, with more than 650,000 views live.

A Live Spider?!?Two years ago, Richmond made history as it became the first D-I college basketball program to bring a live spider onto the court before games. Nicknamed "Tarrant" after UR's Hall of Fame coach, the live tarantula has grown to almost five inches in full length. She's a Venezuelan blue tarantula with a diet of crickets and has a perch from the scorer's table during pregame and behind the home bench during play. A number of national media outlets covered her unveiling, while NCAA.com recently named her college basketball's scariest mascot in honor of Halloween.

SPIDER STORYLINES

Graduate student Kwesi Abakah is the son of an Ghanaian immigrant. Kwesi translates to “born on Sunday.” He is an accomplished vocalist, performing a solo at his undergraduate graduation at Northeastern and will sing the National Anthem at UR’s game vs. Wake Forest.

T.J. Cline was the first basketball transfer to come to Richmond under Coach Mooney. His senior class now features three transfers in Cline, Wood and Abakah.

While all of UR’s three freshmen were born in Richmond and two went to high school here, senior ShawnDre’ Jones also reps the river city. He lived in Richmond through middle school before moving to Houston with his father for high school.

T.J. Cline grew up around the game of basketball with his mother, Nancy Lieberman, and father, Tim Cline, leading the way. Lieberman has held many posts in professional basketball while Cline is a former Washington General. T.J. did not make the varsity basketball team until his senior season and was not heavily recruited out of high school. He wrote about his experiences in The Players' Tribune.

Marshall Wood was a scratch golfer back in high school, playing for his Rustburg Red Devils as an offseason sport. He shot 74 in a tournament in 2010.

Khwan Fore is widely considered UR’s best athlete. At just 6-0, he has a 45-inch two-step vertical and was featured on SportsCenter Top 10 last year for his monster dunk at GW. Richmond Athletics did a science piece with Fore and the physics of his dunks.

Jesse Pistokache is of Choctaw Native American descent. He has an arm tattoo representing his tribe in Texas.

Spider basketball players have a wide variety of majors including economics, sociology, political science, business, accounting, human resources and computer science.

In his first basketball coaching job at Arcadia, Mooney also served as the facility coordinator for a building that hosted weddings on campus, effectively serving as a “wedding planner.”

The four-year letterwinner amassed 1,071 points, which ranks 20th on Prince-ton’s all-time scoring list, and started all 107 games in his career. He currently ranks seventh on Prince-ton’s career list with 142 career three-pointers and is one of five Princeton student-athletes to score 1,000 points, grab 350 rebounds and dish 200 assists.

CHRISMOONEY

HEAD COACH12th SEASON

PRINCETON, 1994

In 2016-17, head coach Chris Mooney begins his 12th season at the helm of the Richmond Spider men’s basketball program.

Mooney now ranks second all-time in the Spider record books with a career record of 207-166 at Richmond for a winning percentage of .557. He is also the fourth longest-tenured coach in the Atlantic 10.

In the spring of 2015, Mooney earned his 200th overall win as a Division I head coach, moving to 225-177 (.560) in 13 seasons at Richmond and Air Force.

He has led the Spiders to six postseason appearances, including NCAA Tournament trips in 2009-10 and 2010-11, and a trip to the NIT Quarterfinals in 2014-15. In the spring of 2011, Mooney’s Spiders made national headlines en route to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, knocking off five-seed Vanderbilt and Morehead State in the process. Richmond finished both the 2010 and 2011 seasons ranked in the Top 25.

Richmond has averaged 20.8 wins over the last eight seasons, with four 20-win campaigns. Playing an always-tough schedule in and out of conference, the Spiders have finished in the top 100 of the RPI in five of the last seven campaigns. UR has also tallied 13 wins over ranked opponents since 2008, more than any other Atlantic 10 program. The Spiders have also won six of the last seven games against ranked teams at the Robins Center.

Since 2008, the Spiders have gone 87-62 against A-10 opponents, tallying more conference wins than any other league team over that stretch. UR is one of just four A-10 teams to not suffer an overall losing season in the last nine years.

Richmond has 18 wins over BCS teams in the last decade with many of them nationally ranked. UR has knocked off California, Arizona State, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Purdue, Florida, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Mississippi State, St. John’s, Virginia Tech, South Florida and Seton Hall.

Mooney’s teams have protected their home court, going 89-25 for a winning percentage of .780 over the last seven seasons at the Robins Center. In 2015-16, UR averaged 6,435 fans per game, the highest home attendance since 1992-93.

In terms of personal accolades, Mooney was tabbed the Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2010, while also being selected as a finalist for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award that year as well. He has been featured in many national publications, including the New York Times, USA Today and Sports Illustrated, while also doing segments on ESPN.

In 2010, he won the Voice of the University Award, given to a faculty or staff member for being a voice that represents the University of Richmond in a positive manner to the wider community. That same year, Richmond Style Weekly tabbed him for the 40 Under 40 list, spotlighting UR’s community involvement with the homeless, Special Olympics, Arthritis Foundation, Friends of Jaclyn Foundation and the ASK Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. For the last four years, Mooney has headlined the Coaches’ Cookoff which raises money for Max’s Positive Vibe Cafe, a non-profit dedicated to training and employing people with learning disabilities.

Mooney has coached 10 Atlantic 10 All-Conference players and seen one player, Justin Harper, drafted to the NBA. 16 former players have gone on to play professionally overseas, including at least one from 10 of the last 11 graduating classes.

2015-16 saw the Spiders make waves in non-conference play before running up against a tough Atlantic 10 slate. Richmond knocked off No. 14 Cal, Wake Forest and Northern Iowa in November and December. UR put together its best scoring average (76.6) since 1980, and set a new school record with 16.6 assists per game, ranking 18th in the country. Richmond also finished fourth in the country in assist to turnover ratio and 18th in field goal percentage. For the second consecutive season, UR was top 20 in fewest turnovers.

T.J. Cline and Terry Allen were both tabbed All-Atlantic 10 Third Team as Cline ranked in the top 10 in the league in points, field goal percentage and assists. Allen was top 10 in rebounds and steals, and was also an NABC All-District Second Teamer.

The 2014-15 season was a return to form for the Spiders as Mooney’s squad put together a record of 21-14, including 12-6 in the Atlantic 10 to place fourth. Richmond finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak, and was one of the “Last Four Out” of the NCAA Tournament at-large field, thereby securing the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage in the NIT. Richmond raced to the NIT Quarterfinals with a win over St. Francis (BK) and Arizona State before falling by just two points to Miami.

Senior Kendall Anthony wrapped up an incredible career that saw him break the school’s all-time three-pointers record and earn All-Atlantic 10 First Team, NABC All-District First Team and VaSID All-State First Team in 2015.

2009-10 and 2010-11 go down as two of the top seasons in Mooney’s coaching career and in recent Spider basketball history. Richmond finished third in the A-10 regular season standings in both seasons, and reached the conference tournament title game twice, winning it in 2010-11.

In the spring of 2010, Richmond earned its first NCAA at-large bid since 2004, garnering a seven seed before being upset in the first round of the tournament. Mooney was named the 2010 Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for the 2010 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award.

That season, the Spiders finished the season ranked no. 24 in the final top-25 rankings, tallying a 26-9 overall record. The Spiders defeated three ranked teams and piled up non-conference wins over Mississippi State, Missouri and no. 13 Florida.

In 2010-11, Richmond brought the pieces back and finished what they started, defeating Dayton in the A-10 championship game to earn Mooney’s first conference championship, the first and only league title since Richmond joined the Atlantic 10 in 2001.

During the regular season, the Spiders racked up victories over the likes of Purdue, Arizona State, Seton Hall and Wake Forest before dumping no. 24 Temple in the A-10 semifinals.

Richmond advanced to the second Sweet 16 in program history by downing Vanderbilt and Morehead State in the NCAA Denver Subregional. The Spiders’ run came to an end at the hands of Kansas in San Antonio. Richmond set a school record with a 29-8 record, finishing no. 21 in the coaches poll.

During those years, the Spiders were led by Kevin Anderson, a 2010 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention and 2010 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. He was a two-time all-conference first teamer and was named the 2011 A-10 Tournament MVP. He also earned a spot on the 2009 All-Conference Second Team and was named the 2008 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year.

Anderson (2007-11) finished his career ranked second all-time at UR with 2,165 points (15.58/game). He still ranks fifth all-time in the A-10 in scoring. His 768 career field goals rank third at Richmond and fifth in the A-10 record book.

Anderson had plenty of help to lead Richmond to national prominence. Justin Harper (2007-11) was a Lute Olson All-American and NABC First Team All-District selection in 2011, while also earning All-Atlantic 10 first team honors. Harper finished with 1,457 career points and 113 career blocks, ranking 11th and eighth, respectively. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft, and saw action for the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons.

David Gonvalzez (2006-10) was another prolific scorer for the Spiders, tallying 1,727 points which currently ranks fifth all-time. He was tabbed to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team in 2010 and was an honorable mention in 2009, while also making the All-Defensive Team in 2010.

Mooney was hired at the University of Richmond at the end of the 2005 season. He had previously coached at Air Force for five seasons, three as an assistant, one as an associate head coach and his final season as head coach. It was his first head coaching job, and in 2004-05, Mooney led the Falcons to an 18-12 record and votes in the national polls. His 18 victories were the most by a first-year head coach at Air Force.

Mooney’s first college coaching experience came at Division III Beaver College, now known as Arcadia University. He spent two seasons there from 1998-2000. He began coaching at the high school level, taking a job at Lansdale Catholic High School in Lansdale, Pa., in 1994. While at Beaver College, Mooney only coached part-time, spending much of his time as an event coordinator. He helped plan weddings, plan events while also serving as the team manager.

A native of Philadelphia, Mooney played collegiately at Princeton (1990-94) under Hall of Fame coach Pete Carril. Mooney twice earned the B.F. Bunn Trophy, given annually to the varsity basketball student-athlete who, through sportsmanship, play and influence, contributed most to the sport at the school.

He finished second for Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a freshman, honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore, First-Team All-Ivy League as a junior and Second-Team All-Ivy his final season.

A 1994 graduate with a B.A. in English, Mooney led Princeton to the NCAA Tournament twice following a pair of conference titles. The four-year letterwinner amassed 1,071 points, which ranks 20th on Princeton’s all-time scoring list, and started all 107 games in his career. He currently ranks seventh on Princeton’s career list with 142 career three-pointers and is one of five Princeton student-athletes to score 1,000 points, grab 350 rebounds and dish 200 assists.

Mooney is married to the former Lia Chomat, a Princeton graduate who also has a doctorate in psychology from Penn. The couple has
