I am honored to serve as the president of Johnston Community College.

Our 2016-17 Community Report offers just a glimpse of the many wonderful things happening at JCC. As I reflect over the past year, I am amazed at the progress this fine institution is making.

We continue to demonstrate how we are one college with endless opportunities. With every student we serve, we are making decisions that eliminate educational barriers and provide a seamless approach to higher education.

Strategic enrollment management and facility enhancements were two major areas of focus for the college this past year and will continue to be a priority moving forward. We are invested in more data-driven decisions and providing a 21st century campus as we zero in on student recruitment, retention, and completion strategies.

I am grateful for the hard work of our talented and experienced faculty and staff and for the dedication and commitment of our students. I am also thankful for the support of our board of trustees, Foundation directors and donors, and our community leaders.

JCC truly is changing lives, saving lives, and transforming lives.

I have served as a JCC trustee for 20 years, and I can honestly say this college is transforming into one of the best community colleges in North Carolina.

In 2016-17, JCC continued its quest for excellence when it was named a finalist in the Bellwether Awards, which annually recognize outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges in the future.

I am also extremely proud of the leadership of our president, Dr. David Johnson. This year, he received the I.E. Ready Distinguished Leader Award and serves as the president of the North Carolina Community College Presidents Associa-tion. With both these recognitions, Dr. Johnson is helping advance and promote understanding of the important role community colleges serve in our great state.

From our transfer opportunities, associate-de-gree options, and dual-enrollment offerings, JCC has so much to offer students in our community.

As I look around and see the outstanding work of the students, faculty, and staff at this awesome institution, I truly understand why it’s the first college choice for so many.

Johnston Community College proudly accepted its 2017 Bellwether finalist award Jan. 30-31 at the Community College Futures Assembly in Orlando, Florida.

JCC was one of 10 community colleges in the nation selected as a finalist in the planning, governance, and finance category. JCC was selected for its One College organizational philosophy for student success.

"We were so privileged to be a part of the 2017 Community College Futures Assembly as a Bellwether Award finalist," said Dr. David Johnson, JCC president.

"This independent policy think-tank is one of the premier organizations in the United States which recognizes and promotes effective college programs," Johnson added. "JCC was honored to be selected from hundreds of applications as a Bellwether finalist for our One College philosophy. I was extremely proud of our team of presenters as they represented the entire institution's work to fulfill student success."

JCC initiated its One College model in 2010 with the restructuring of the curriculum division, which included combining continuing education with curriculum programming under the leadership of one vice president and five deans; a merger of registration staff; and creation of a Center for Academic Planning to develop skilled employee pipelines and give students a one-stop fashion of service delivery.

The Bellwether Awards are an integral part of the Community College Futures Assembly, established in 1995. The Assembly is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida and focuses on cutting-edge, trendsetting programs that other colleges might find worthy of replicating. The Bellwether Awards are given annually in three categories to colleges with outstanding and innovative programs or practices.

Dr. David N. Johnson, president of Johnston Community College, is the 2017 recipient of the I.E. Ready Distinguished Leader Award.

Each year, N.C. State University’s College of Education honors one of its alumni for exceptional leadership at a community college with the I.E. Ready Award. Dr. Isaac Epps Ready led the North Carolina Community College System in its earliest days and went on to serve as Professor Emeritus in N.C. State’s Adult and Community College Education program.

The I.E. Ready Award honors N.C. State alumni who have built student success, implemented evidence-based practices and achieved impressive results, adopted entrepreneurial approaches to leadership, and created key external partnerships with their communities.

One of Johnson’s biggest accomplishments during his presidency at JCC is implementing the “one college” organizational philosophy which aims to alleviate institutional silos by merging curriculum and continuing education divisions and services into one instructional unit. Under Johnson’s leadership, JCC was also named a Top 150 Community College by the Aspen Institute and was a Bellwether finalist in 2017.

Johnson is also serving as President of the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents (NCACCP) for 2017-18.

The purpose of the NCACCP is to foster and promote the growth, progress, and general welfare of North Carolina’s community colleges through the unified efforts of the system’s presidents. The NCACCP president is responsible for planning and conducting the association’s monthly and quarterly meetings and advocating on behalf on the 58 colleges and presidents to the N.C. General Assembly, the State Board of Community Colleges, and the system office leadership.

Johnson said he has several goals for the association in the upcoming year, including the hiring of an executive director. Also, he said he would like the association to be involved in a statewide marketing and branding campaign as well as strengthen its relationship with the state board, system office and trustee association to better develop a strategic plan and promote the needs of the state’s community colleges. He also hopes the association can plan an orientation for new presidents in the upcoming year.

JCC established a Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Committee in 2017.

Comprised of a cross-section of representatives from the College’s five divisions, the group is tasked with helping JCC make more data-driven decisions. The committee serves to assist the College in predicting enrollment growth, developing new programs, recruiting students into innovative programs, and retaining students for completion and success.

As part of the work of the committee, the College is consulting with the CLARUS Corporation to assist in finding market and enrollment opportunities for the College. JCC also plans to hire a Strategic Enrollment Management Coordinator (SEM) strategist to provide support for and foster an institutional culture of strategic enrollment management.

STRATEGIC ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE FORMED

JCC continued enhancing facilities in 2017.

Thanks to the generous support of county capital funds, county and state bond monies, and donor contributions JCC completed more than $3 million in campus improvements.

Specifically, the College completed the development of the new Southeast Parking lot which included two new parking areas, as well as repairs to lots in Wilson, Health, Learning Resource Center, and Truck Driver Training buildings. The College also installed new roofs on the Tart and STEAM buildings and installed new LED stage and house lights in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium.

Upgrades will continue in 2018 as the College initiates a full renovation of the auditorium and lobby. Work will also begin to transform the multipurpose room in the Tart Building, the College’s former library, into the Student Success Center. The Tart Building renovation is expected to cost some $9 million and be complete in fall 2019.

“We are in the business of changing lives, saving lives, and transforming lives,” said Dr. David Johnson, JCC president. “We can only do that with people and facilities that are reflective of that mission.”

Two Johnston Community College college transfer students were named Goodnight Scholars at N.C. State University in May 2017.

Emma Hall and Michael Cavenaugh are two of the 10 recipients of the scholarship for the inaugural Transfer Class of 2019.

The Goodnight Scholars Program targets North Carolina residents from low- and middle-income families who aspire to study in a science, technology, education, mathematics or STEM education discipline at NC State. The value of the scholarship is $19,500 and is renewable for up to four years for first-year students ($78,000 total), and two years for transfer students ($39,000 total). In addition to the scholarship, Goodnight Scholars have access to an assortment of developmental programming focused on their professional and personal growth.

Hall and Cavenaugh both earned associate in science degrees at JCC. Cavenaugh plans to study civil engineering, and Hall plans to study biology with hopes of attending PA school in the future.

Cavenaugh said she’s glad she choose JCC as her first college choice.

“To be honest it was a hard decision to make because so many of my friends were going to Carolina and State out of high school,” Hall said. “But me and my family thought coming to JCC was the smartest option for me, and it definitely was the right choice. JCC has been wonderful. I think attending a community college helps you grow and mature as a student and really find yourself and who you are before you go on to a four-year college.

Johnston Community College is pleased to name Berry Plastics its 2016 Business and Industry Partner of the Year.

Berry Plastics was selected for the honor based on its continued commitment to education. The manufacturer of plastic packaging has participated in four customized training projects since 2009, offered internships to JCC engineering students, and supported 115 hours of training through JCC for some 100 of its employees.

“Their commitment to people and their development is what makes Berry a leader in people development and such a strong partner with JCC and our greater community,” said Joy Callahan, JCC dean of economic and workforce development.

JCC hosted a campus-wide open house March 21 to showcase the College’s new Career in a Year initiative.

Career in a Year promotes the many career and technical education programs that train students in a year or less. These credentials can prepare students to immediately enter the workforce or be additional certifications as the student pursues an associate’s degree.

JCC offers 70 certificates and diplomas in 13 different program areas.

New students had a blast learning about JCC at new student orientation sessions held on campus in July.

The sessions introduced new students and their parents to the college as well as provided an energizing and empowering message from Curtis Zimmerman, motivation speaker and author of Life at Performance Level. Students also learned about academic programs and campus resources and services. The sessions were open to Career and College Promise (CCP) students as well as traditional new students.

The Accreditation Commission for Education and Nursing, known as ACEN, has granted full initial accreditation to JCC’s associate degree nursing program.

JCC is now one of 18 community colleges in North Carolina with ACEN accreditation.

ACEN accreditation is a voluntary peer-review process intended to enhance quality improvement in nursing education. ACEN supports the interest of nursing education, nursing practice, and the public by the functions of accreditation with programs in secondary, postsecondary, and hospital-based governing organizations that offer certificates, diplomas, or degrees.

Linda Smith, dean of health, wellness and human services, said she believes the accreditation will help JCC nursing graduates be more marketable for job opportunities.

“We are now one out of 18 in the community college system of 56 that are accredited,” Smith said. “This was a challenge, but we were willing to conquer it. It was hard but we knew it was possible. We had to meet every standard 100 percent.”

“We are looking forward to continued success, and we are so grateful for the support of our students, faculty, administration, and community during this process,” she added.

Currently, JCC’s nursing graduates boast a 95-100% pass rate, well above state and national averages, on the NCLEX national licensure exam.

Johnston Community College’s Beta Zeta Theta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has achieved five-star status, the highest level of engagement offered by the international honor society for two-year colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa chapters have five levels of engagement that progress from local, campus involvement to regional involvement to international involvement. The Five Star Chapter Plan is the roadmap guiding the chapter through the levels. Chapters use the Plan as a guide for building a strong, active chapter.

“This is an immense honor,” said Lisa Draughon, PTK co-advisor at JCC. “We’ve come a long way over the past few years, and the goal will be to continue building and growing our chapter and maintain our five-star status in the future.”

Shenan Higgins, PTK vice president, said the club worked tirelessly this past year to move the chapter from one-star status to five-star status.

To achieve five-star status, colleges must meet a rigorous set of requirements, including the submission of an Honors in Action Project as well as a College Project. They must also attend the annual convention, honors institute, or international advisors educational event.

Anna Ekis is thankful for second chances.

As a teenager, she had much promise ahead as a scholarship athlete in North Carolina. But a car accident left her seriously injured. She then moved to Florida and unfortunately got connected with the wrong crowd.

“I had everything going for me. I was a good athlete, but I got in with the wrong crowd and struggled with drug addiction which ultimately landed me in prison. My family had to care for my son during that time and that was like a major turning point for me. I wanted to provide for him, and I made up my mind I could do more.”

Ekis moved back to North Carolina with her mom to get back on her feet. She’d always liked engineering so she decided to enroll at Johnston Community College in fall 2013.

“It had been years since I attended school so when I came to placement testing, I placed in developmental math,” she explained. “I knew I needed a lot of math credits to become an engineer. I had a lot of hard work ahead of me but I knew it would be all worth it in the end.”

Because of her success and perseverance, Ekis was selected as JCC’s Academic Excellence award recipient for 2017. She is one of 58 students at NC Community Colleges receiving awards for academic excellence.

Johnston Community College honored longtime truck driver training director Paul Jump May 18 as its 2017 Distinguished Citizen. Jump was also awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Jump’s career in truck driving began 50 years ago when he was hired as driver for the United States Parcel Service (UPS). In 1989, Jump joined the N.C. Truck Driver Training School at JCC as lead instructor and then became program director in 2003.

Jump was honored at a Evening for Education Distinguished Citizen Gala dinner hosted by the JCC Foundation in the Public Safety Building on the JCC main campus. The program included well wishes and testimonials from colleagues and trucking industry friends Lance Collette, chairman of the N.C. Trucking Association Board of Directors; Trooper C.R. “Randy” Bridges; Carolyn Tharrington of Smithfield representing the Kennedy Home; and Rick Cates, vice president of Marsh Risk Consulting.

He was also presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state’s highest civilian honor for persons who have made significant contributions to their state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.

Jump said he was grateful for the honor and the opportunity to spend his career at JCC.

“I have enjoyed every minute of my career in trucking and with the N.C. Truck Driver Training School at JCC,” Jump said. “I have had the pleasure of working with an outstanding group of administrators and trucking instructors who have always supported our program and the training that we provide students.”

Jump said seeing students graduate as licensed truck drivers has been the most rewarding part of his job. “Most students come to us wanting to be a truck driver, but they don’t really know what it takes to be a truck driver until they get here,” he says. “It’s good to see where they’ve come from the first day of driving to the last. That’s really the most satisfying part of this career.”

geDear Alumni and Friends,

As members of Johnston Community College’s Foundation Board and Staff, we are excited to share with you some notable achievements from this past year.

During the 2016-2017, we directly assisted 382 students through our scholarship program. Our

innovation grants program produced four innovative awards to faculty and staff including the development of an instructional Lightboard Studio, a collaborative project between JCC’s Associate of Engineering program and the Jaguar Office of Learning Technologies (JOLT).

Fiscally, the Foundation’s total assets grew by 8%, increasing to $8,215,174 while the annual income for the same period was up 23% - $1,763,126 for the year.

Johnston Community College’s tag line is “One College – Endless Opportunities.” This was introduced a few years ago as part of a restructuring of the college’s organizational composition and rebranding efforts. Now that the College has advanced this new structure by aligning both the instructional and student support functions, we are beginning to align other divisions to support these efforts.

The JCC Foundation will be working in the coming months to determine what “endless opportunities,” such as student scholarships, we will continue to expand as well as how to acquire new areas of support (major capital investments) for the College.

We must deliver for our students by offering the very best we can in terms of their educational and personal growth during their time at JCC. They are our future workforce in healthcare, public safety, technology, business and education. In order for Johnston County and our service areas to thrive, we must continue to increase our capacity at JCC to provide funds critical to support our students.

Thank you for your partnership. Without you, we would not be able to provide the opportunities we presently afford our students! The commitment you make to our students and our community is the game changer for us—it will take private funding to move the pendulum from one college to one college who offers endless opportunities to our students!

Please know that we so appreciate you and the personal investments you make in JCC!

Sincerely,
