Conductor’s Welcome—Cheryl Woldseth With the theme “Strange New Worlds,” we’ll go where no band has gone before in this second concert of our 4-part Picnic Pops concert series.

STRANGE instruments (what is a heckelphone?), sounds (we are not alone!), and creatures (there will be some odd birds and dancing elephants).

NEW places (step aboard a tall sailing ship or travel by caravan), feelings (and love can also be strange)

WORLDS like those in movies, outer space, the wild, or to Rio de Janiero’s carnavale (and this Summer Olympic Games too)

This is our 13th year that NCCBand hosts this July Band Musician Invitational event, including a joint re-hearsal with registered guest musicians, and then a grand concert together. There are 130 NCCBand musicians, guest musicians and Band Hands participating in today’s event.

Don’t forget to join our Fan Email list or follow the Nevada County Concert Band on Facebook. I post pre-view news, behind-the-scenes pictures and stories, and announcements about how to participate in up-coming concerts (either as an audience member or a Band Hand). As always, our web page has our full concert schedule, plus links to after-concert photos. New this year, our band’s many ensembles will per-form at the 7/31 North Star House event, and we’ve added a fourth picnic pops concert (also free to the public) on 9/11 in Alta Sierra.

Our Conductor Cheryl (Sutton, Baker) Woldseth has a Bachelors of Music degree in Church Music from Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ), sings, and plays many instruments. In addition to conducting the Nevada County Con-cert Band, she performs/records/tours with Sonos Handbell Ensemble, teaches music at several local schools, performs with the Raspberry Jam Band and Blended Metal Saxophones, and has served several non-profit music organizations. She is a member of the music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota, and owns the music publishing company Bronze:FX. Cheryl lives in Grass Valley, CA.

Band Member Spotlight — Bruce Piner

Instruments: Bassoon

I have been playing bassoon for 36 years, although my original instrument was trombone. I still identify with trombone players;; irreverent, egotistical, and obnoxious, they have all the attributes I aspire to. Formal training? Yes. I once took a class in Prom Dress Design. I first played with the NCCBand in 1983, where I met my wife Laurie (a fantastic flute player) at a band rehearsal. Fortunately, she does not still hold a grudge against the organization for that. Do l know any famous people? George Clooney and I are best buddies. Well, maybe not best buddies. I did see one of his movies once. Okay, I really didn't see the movie, but someone sort of told me about it. We are real close. Sports have been a big part of my life: National Caliber bicycle racer for 17 years (won many races), State Road Race Champion in 1979, nine IRONMAN Triathlons, and last November completed my 40th marathon at the New York City Marathon (most being in Boston Qualifying time). Besides the band, I am principle bassoon of the Yuba-Sutter Symphony, and have played with them for over 20 years. My mother and father were wonderful musicians. My father had great natural talent, and my sister played saxophone. (Don't hold that against her. She was young and didn't know any better.) I love playing in this band. The musicians are great. I enjoy trying to needle every-one. I show no prejudice – I ridicule everyone equally!

Congratulations to Rebekah Shuholm (trumpet) and Braeden Ames (flute, piccolo, oboe, trombone, mallets), who have been awarded the 2016 scholarships of $1000 each.
