THE SIX VILLAGES NEWSLETTER

Eat, Drink & Be Merry for tomorrow. . . What are you giving up for Lent? The question echoed around the classroom, followed by Matthews text 4.2 'after fasting 40 days and forty nights, he was hungry'.In a post war, cinereous, rationed Britain where austerity ruled, we thought it was a case of Hobson's Choice, but our sacrifice would be as nothing when compared to earlier God fearing generations when mortifying the flesh took on a whole new meaning. The season of Lent is one of the oldest observations on the Christian calendar and like others has changed over the centuries but its purpose has always been the same as written by Iranaus of Lyon, an early church father (c130 A.D.-200 A.D) using Christ's example of self examination; penitence and self denial, in preparation for EASTER. In medieval times forbidden foods included Meat, fish, fats, eggs and milky foods (later relaxed to allow fish to be consumed) however, a recognised trait of human nature is that preceding an imminent season of fast, abstinence or deprivation, would approach such privations by greater or lesser excesses. As Lent also excluded the boisterous practices of 'mumming' and masquerading the pre-Lenten week had virtually every excess crammed into it becoming a Carnival (carne levare) meaning 'farewell to meat' The history of 'Carnival' is complex with dates and origins often debated but what became known as Carnival season started in Italy as a last hurrah before the days of penance between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Eventually, the celebration spread from Rome across Europe, Russia and eventually to the colonies of the New World. Carnival of Venice originated in the 11th Century reaching a decadent peak during the Renaissance and has become a secular extravaganza therefore giving a welcome excuse for Venetians to act out their fantasies behind the anonymity of disguise. Many later world famous carnivals took their cue from Venice such as the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil a four day celebration finishing on Shrove Tuesday. Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday)-New Orleans. Every year, crowds flock there to take in the floats, festivities and food and to leave their mark on the Big Easy. Rose Monday Karneval, celebrated in Cologne on Monday before Ash Wednesday with fancy dress, when sweets, chocolates and eau de cologne are distributed. Our celebrations are somewhat muted and confined to such traditions as 'Collop Monday' in the North, being sliced meat or bacon with eggs, in Scotland they eat 'Crowdie' a porridge with butter and milk and of course pancakes eaten on Shrove (Shrive-to absolve) Tuesday. Be it the strict Lenten laws of yesterday to the mild ones of today I conclude with St.Augustine's wayward prayer, 'Oh Lord, make me good, but not yet.' Clair Callaghan

The next steps are to look at the Site Specifics, including any additional sites and this will be out for a 6 week consultation in the Spring. A Pre Submission Document will be out for 6 weeks Consultation in the Summer 2016, prior to going to Inspectors for approval in December 2016 Recycling - Residents across Breckland are reminded of the importance of leaving recycling loose in their bins at home. Please do not to put any plastic bags in the recycling bin, either as empty items or as filled bags, as carrier bags and bin bags can ruin materials which could otherwise be recycled. A new grant scheme for Dementia sufferers will enable Breckland residents affected by dementia to apply for grants of up to £1,000 to improve their quality of life. Carers, relatives and professionals can also apply on an individual’s behalf. Grants will be given for changes that make the home environment more dementia-friendly. Grant recipients do not need to have a formal diagnosis but should be receiving support in relation to dementia. Garden Jottings from Ken

Getting outside is rewarding in so many ways; the chance to breathe in fresh air, take some exercise and appreciate your surroundings to name just a few, so why not enjoy these by doing a spot of gardening? Spring has sprung early this year leading to a magnificent show of colourful bulbs and tubers; snowdrops, Winter aconites, daffs and Cyclamen all look wonderful and have been in flower for weeks. If you get the chance, plant a few pots of these and others to enjoy now and in the years to come, all are quite happy in a sun-less spot or tucked under deciduous shrubs, try growing English bluebells around a golden forsythia or small fritillarias with a red-flowering currant (ribes). It’s your garden so create what you like, you can be as bold with the planting combinations as you wish. When selecting plants take a look at newer introductions, compared to older varieties these are frequently (but not always) a lot more rewarding. Roses are a prime example, and some of the best bush, patio and climbers are available from us now (2 chunky plants for just £10.00!) Most of our selection have been judged and bestowed various awards, including ‘Rose of the Year’ an indication of an exceptional rose, bred for reliable flowering, scent, vigour and disease resistance, this year’s winner is ‘Sunny Sky’, a soft creamy yellow HT rose. You can’t beat a bit of fresh fruit and veg, so allow some space to grow something you can eat. We have all you need; fertilizers and bags of manure to improve the soil, canes and netting to protect your crops, seeds, potato tubers, onion and shallot sets, various fruit bushes, and even young veg plants when the time’s right. If you’ve had a go in the past without much success try again, it might not be your fault, for instance runner beans can be reluctant to set pods in some years, to get around this problem we have introduced two self-fertile varieties into our seed stand this year, one with traditional red flowers and the other with white blooms which are less prone to bird attack. Now is also a good time to tackle some bigger jobs such as replacing or repairing arches and trellis, painting fences or restoring (or planting) native hedges. These tasks are much easier to handle before plants come back into leaf, the same applies to tending herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses, clearing out any dead foliage, dividing if necessary and placing plant supports around taller types before they shoot up and flop over (as they did last year!)

Volunteer drivers needed in your area The non-emergency patient transport service in Norfolk is a partnership between ERS Medical and Voluntary Norfolk, providing transport for patients living in Norfolk to hospitals throughout East Anglia and beyond. Our volunteer drivers provide an essential service, transporting up to one hundred patients to their destination each day. We would love to hear from caring, calm and reliable individuals with their own car. We are always keen to hear from volunteers happy to go above and beyond the usual, by taking on early morning appointments for patients needing dialysis, and appointments in London. All expenses are reimbursed, and training and support is provided. Call Jules on 01603 883860 or email [email protected] for more information.

In the Chancel

The murmur of a collared dove …. We sit on an ancient pew To meet once more in the mystery of love Hands and fingers flex to grasp anew This plan devised in time above; To cleanse and heal, His wounds the clue HE was fixed to a cross. I am rooted to the spot. We earn and save, to spend on dross; Quite ripe, to clog, to rot.

And yet His light Will erase the darkest blot. In my tragic plight He bends to touch me There is no fight Once more I yield to be free. ATS Good Friday 2012 All Saints – Old Buckenham

A view from the Rectory

This month we have a very moving

film at St. Mary’s Banham Film Night on Saturday 5th March. It is a film with its music score provided by live musicians! Three young hopeful friends come to the big city, but will it end well?

We remembered at Christmas how God’s Word was written in dust so that we might not be afraid of those words, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. In the conclusion of that sweet story we have twelve hopeful friends come to the big city, but will it end well? I invite you to walk with us through Holy Week, starting with two services with all our churches together: a victory parade on Palm Sunday at 10am on New Buckenham village green (bring a leafy branch 2 or 3 feet long to wave!), and Good Friday at noon at St. Martins, with prayers at all our six churches at 2pm. The grand finale is at All Saint’s Old Buckenham by the bonfire on Saturday 26th evening 7.30pm! Steve and Jo Wright

New Buckenham Art Exhibition I think it would be fair to say that the New Buckenham Exhibition over the twenty years has built up quite a reputation for being a quality show. It has always been held over the Easter Weekend and this year is no exception. The Opening Night is Friday 25th March starting at 7.30 p.m. and finishing at 10 p.m. admission is £3.00 and this includes your glass of wine and nibbles. It is always a special night where lots of people gather as soon as the doors are open to find their very special picture. Many are sold on this evening and often to people who have bought a picture at the exhibition before. However if you prefer a more calm leisurely viewing then the Saturday, Sunday, or Monday are the days to go and enjoy this cultural event. The exhibition is open on Saturday 26th Sunday 27th and Monday 28th March from 11.a.m to 4.30 p.m. Admission is £1.00 The exhibition varies from year to year as new artists exhibit. However there are some artists that have been exhibiting with us since it opened twenty years ago. The quality is always good and it seems to get better each year. There is an interesting mix of styles and mediums. Water colours and oils are probably the most popular and then you find some incredible drawings, stitch work and always an individual view point in photography. I think it is fair to say there is something for everyone. Remember the dates and bring your family and friends and maybe you’ll find a painting to buy. A perfect Valentines card - I’ve spent a very worrying and sometimes frustrating time since Christmas endeavouring to get my terminally ill brother John moved from Kent to a Nursing Home near me in Norfolk. I received a valentine card from my ten year old granddaughter containing a poem – the best valentines card I’ve ever had!

Put  a  smile  on  your  face  Everything  will  be  great  Don’t  worry  about  a  thing  Soon  you‘ll  hear  a  ring  It  will  be  Uncle  John  at  your  door  He  will  need  taking  care  of  But  it  will  all  be  fine  If  you  stay  strong

Love  from  Ella  xx    Love  you  Nana I’m glad to say John has now arrived! W.P.

Derelict House in Banham Following the concerns shown in last years Newsletter regarding the derelict house (known locally as “Lucy’s Shop”) in Crown Street I recently contacted our District Councillor Adrian Joel to see if there has been any progress resolving this longstanding problem. Below is his reply: “I spoke to the Breckland Environmental Services Manager last week as to where we are with "Lucy’s Shop". Like all Councils we have many short, medium & long term empty properties, Gordon Partridge assures me that "Lucy’s Shop" is on the short list to resolve. I will continue to push for some action on this site.” Maybe a small chink of hope! The District Council certainly has the powers to do something about this – how many more years will it be on the ‘short list’? W.P.
