Sr. Warden’s Report Barbara Kehayes, Sr. Warden
Here we all are, facing a New Year, full of possibilities and new paths. The Vestry will be starting
off on January 7th and 8th at their Vestry Retreat at Trinity Center where we will review the year past and consider the needs ahead. With thanks to outgoing members, Anne Lankford, Proctor Baker and Jerry Gehrig (replaced by Dick Mohler), we welcome new members Jane McCoy, Trish Ludwig and Dick Mohler for 2016 and 2017.
Your Vestry
We are blessed to have The Rev. Ed Mullins as our Interim Priest as of January 1, 2016 to shepherd us during the coming year, taking care of our spiritual life. Meanwhile, the Vestry's priority will be implementing the search process for a full time Rector. Vince Gullotta, Search Committee Chair, and the Vestry will form the Search Committee to meet with The Rev. Canon Stockard on January 19th to start the ball rolling in earnest. We intend to be careful and methodical in our search so it might seem slow to many of us. However, we will keep everyone informed of the progress along the way. We want the best fit we can find for Holy Trinity and our members.

Bells are ringing,
oels singing:
"Peace on earth, good will to men"
What a joyous season! Our services are full of beloved carols and an occasional unfamiliar carol.
When singing the familiar ones which we have sung since we were children, it is easy to sing the words from memory while not really thinking about them. When we sing “Joy to the world” we sing “Let earth receive her king… let every heart prepare Him room.” The poetry, the imagery can be missed because we are so familiar with it. Then we hear a new carol, a new setting of the familiar message and we listen with new ears. During this busiest of seasons, let us slow down the pace just enough to listen to our carols anew and hear the Good News once more!
♪♫ Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! Of Jesse’s lineage coming as men of old have sung.
It came a flow’ret bright, amid the cold of winter, When half spent was the night.
Isaiah ‘twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind, With Mary we behold if, the Virgin Mother kind.
To show God’s love aright, she bore to men a Savior,
When half spent was the night. ♫♪ This seems like a perfect opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for all the time, talent and effort
the individual choir members and Ray dedicate to our music ministry. I am so grateful for their trust and willingness to come for extra rehearsals on a Saturday morning or make last minute changes on a Sunday morning. We come from so many different places and different musical experiences. Yet when we combine our voices on Sunday morning, it all comes together, making a joyful noise unto our Lord.
Last month I spoke about having a Boar’s Head Feast in January. Unfortunately, we have to put that plan on hold; there are too many obstacles in our way this year. Hopefully, with more advanced planning we can do it next January.
Wishing everyone a Blessed Christmas and a Healthy, Happy 2016
Treasurer's Report Wes Brown, Treasurer
Contributions are slightly ahead of budget primarily
due to the pre-payment of pledges from families who have moved away. Expenses fell below budget in November, primarily as a result of John Bonner's retirement. Areas of concern remain utilities (106% of the annual budget), Office Expense (169% of the annual budget), and Christian Education (95% of the annual budget). The Rector's Discretionary account is $650 over the annual budget.
Expenses should be reduced in December due to the absence of a full-time Rector. If there are any questions or concerns please contact me by email at [email protected] or by
phone at 426-1244.

TRINITY’S TRUMPET
When Was That? Raymond A. Winslow, Jr., Historian
Casting about for a Trumpet topic, I decided to dip into the minutes of the Woman’s Auxiliary of
Holy Trinity Parish to see how the churchwomen began the year 1916. Among the routine financial reports of contributions sent to Thompson Orphanage and to missions in South Dakota and Alaska was a memorial tribute to one of the church’s most faithful members, Miss Rachel Hardy Harvey.
Checking some other sources led to the discovery that the death date on Miss Rachel’s tombstone in the churchyard is evidently wrong. It reads: "DEC. 26, 1916." The esteemed lady’s death certificate gave the date "Dec 27 1915" but showed her age as 79 years, 6 months, and 2 [n.b.] days. The memorial declares: "Passed from the Church Militant to the Church Triumphant Dec. 26 - 1915 - in the 80th year of her age, Miss Rachel Harvey - the last member of an old distinguished family."
Why are three sources unanimous only in saying the death month was December? Two give the day as the 26th and two give the year as 1915. The three are not of equal weight in seeking the correct date. Tombstones typically are put in place some considerable time after death, with information supplied to the stone carver by someone who is not liable for the accuracy of the data. The Harvey family plot in the churchyard contains virtually identical markers for persons whose deaths ranged from 1881 to 1946. The inscriptions on those markers were thus carved years after the decease, from sources unknown and unverifiable.
The memorial was written by a friend within days of Miss Rachel’s death, but it is not an official document. The backing of officialdom lies with the death certificate, which is a legal document filed as required by statute. I would argue, however, that the certificate drew its content from two sources. The personal information was given to the registrar by the decedent’s niece; all of it can be verified from other sources and its citation of a birth on June 24, 1836, and the listing of the age at death equates to demise on December 26, 1915. The medical information was given by Dr. Robert W. Smith on December 29 th and is the only source to give the day of death as the 27th.
So we apparently have errors by a busy physician and a latter day stone cutter. The moral of which is that being in writing or carved in stone does not make something right.
(For those who wonder what date the parish register gives, the answer is nothing but the year 1915. There was a change of rectors early in 1916 and parish record keeping apparently lagged.)
Stewardship Dick Mohler, Co-Chairman
Welcome to 2016! This past year was memorable in many ways and at the top was the retirement
of Father Bonner. But what we remember most is the nine plus wonderful years of John and Debbie's ministry. We wish them well in Chattanooga.
Our 2016 Pledge Campaign did not achieve as high a giving level as that of the previous 3 years. This year we received 69 pledges for a total of $163,606, which is 6 less pledges and $12,000 less than last year. There are several reasons for the decline, but the main is we had six supportive families move, including the Bonners.
Our Stewardship committee will strive to increase the congregation’s understanding of the meaning of stewardship and how we can keep it in our minds with a sense of joy rather than apprehension.
Thank you for your support.
