Winona WelcomesYouCongratulations - you have found it: the Midwest’s most beloved and best kept secret. From its sculpted bluffs to its mighty river and all the places in between, Winona has unparalleled beauty mixed with a cool urbanity and old-world charm that proves that yes, you really can have it all in one enchanting place. The gilded era of lumber barons and paddle-wheelers is immortalized here in the lavish architecture that has become a hallmark of this picturesque river hamlet. Elaborate cornices, grand buildings, and vibrant stained glass beckon for a stroll through the historic downtown today just as they did a century ago, and all who pass this way agree that Winona is truly a beautiful place. For outdoor lovers, whatever your version of relaxing is - whether it is swinging on a bench by the lake or tackling a wicked mountain bike trail, whether it is a tranquil hike in the woods or whirlybirds on a wake board - Winona is a paradise.
But Winona loves its indoor recreation too, and the arts scene here is as cosmopolitan as you’ll find anywhere. Browse original paintings by greats like Picasso and Van Gogh, immerse yourself in the music of international masters like Yo-Yo Ma, and contemplate Shakespeare with our world-class theater company. Together with music and film festivals, art shows, and museums for every interest, this extraordinary array of arts and culture leaves no doubt that Winona is not just another pretty face. Indeed, this community has the best of all worlds wrapped into one delightful destination, a remarkable city regarded as a treasure by those who find it. Whether for a day or a week, we invite you to visit and see for yourself why, no matter where your interests lay, everyone loves Winona.

“Highlighting the Upper Mississippi’s recreational, cultural, historical and arts assets provides compelling evidence to quell misconceptions that MSP is surrounded by miles of flat mid-American dullness.” – MinnPost, “The Missis-sippi’s importance to MSP doesn’t stop as it flows on south,” January 31, 2014
“Great River Road National Scenic By-way (SOUTH): This is one of the prettiest parts of Minnesota, with panoramic views of the Mighty Mis-sissippi on one side, and towering bluffs
on the other as you meander through historic river towns and by pastoral scenery.” – Minnesota Monthly, “Scenic Summer Drives,” July 2014
“Winona is a small town with great character, overlooking the Mississippi River in Minnesota’s beautiful bluff coun-try. It has a vibrant history of industry, immigration and Native American culture, as well as an impressive stained glass heritage, a creativity which can be seen in much of the local architecture…Beyond the bounds of the town itself, visitors can explore the rolling, forested terrain of the Mississippi River Valley, which is wonderful for hiking, cycling, camping and birdwatching.” – Hopper.com Travel Blog, “Travel Spotlight on Winona, Minnesota,” March 24, 2014
“Winona prides itself on its many cultural attrac-tions, the Great River Shakespeare Festival, the Frozen River Film Festival, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, the historical architecture and the classical music Beethoven Festival. The southeastern city along the Mississippi river also
prides itself on its natural attractions and the community is increasing ways people can enjoy these attractions...Take the trails less traveled and you’re likely to have them all to yourself in southeastern Minnesota – a luxury in a crowded world.” – MN Trails Magazine, “Winona: Open to the Outdoors,” Spring 2014
“A Diamond-rated restaurant, museum masterpieces of Picasso, Matisse and Monet and wine tastings are what one would expect to find in a large metropolitan area, but these cultural and culinary delights are even more impressive when experienced along
the scenic and historical Great River Road in Winona.” – Minnesota Group Tour & Packaged Travel Planner, “Wanderlust in Winona: Cultural and culinary nuances blend deliciously along the Mississippi River,” January 2014
“Did you know that Winona was named after Princess Winona <sic>, daughter of Chief Wapasha? Did you know that it’s the stained glass capital of the world? Did you
know that it’s awesome? Here’s why: Winona ranked second in not one or two, but three of our categories: young population, nightlife, and active life options per capita.” – Movoto Real Estate Blog, “10 Most Exciting Places In Minnesota,” July 2014

Don’t know where to begin? Check out our sample itineraries here, or click on VisitWinona.com to view themed itineraries, geared toward the outdoor enthusiast, arts lover, and more.
1/2 DAY: Begin your journey with a drive to Garvin Heights Overlook where you can take in a spectacular view: the winding Mississippi River, trails, and lakes surrounding the entire city of Winona.
Stop into Bloedow Bakery—“Top 50 Best Donut Shops in the United States” by Saveur Magazine, March 2013—to sample their famous maple long johns or more than a dozen other varieties of baked goods, all made from the original recipes since 1924.
Next, head to the Winona County History Center located in Winona’s downtown to learn more about what put Winona on the map: from our booming lumber industry in the 1800s to our connections with Fastenal, Watkins and Wincraft.
Finally, take a spin around Winona’s East Lake in a canoe or kayak, available for a minimal fee to rent through the city’s Park and Recreation Department.
FULL DAY: If you have an entire day to spend in the city, start at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum which boasts an impressive collection of water-inspired paintings, sculptures and more. Monet, Picasso, Renoir and Van Gogh can all be seen right here in Winona.
Stroll through downtown Winona with more than 100 National Register historic sites, specialty and antique shops, restaurants and more.
Stop into one of a half dozen coffeehouses in the downtown area to treat yourself to a frothy caffeinated beverage or a fresh deli sandwich. Local ingredients are celebrated here.
Remember “The Watkins Man?” See history and product displays of one of the country’s oldest direct selling companies at the Watkins Heritage Museum. Free admission allows visitors to peruse a timeline of the J. R. Watkins Naturals Company and even purchase current Watkins products.

Weekend: Day 1Begin your weekend excursion by hopping on the Trester Trolley and taking a guided tour of the city of Winona in a beautifully restored trolley car. Clarence packs his tours with Winona’s rich history, and some facts residents may not even know.Ready for an experience of a lifetime? Contact Winona’s Outdoor Education & Recreation Center located on the Winona State University campus. Guides will lead you through the backwaters of the Mississippi in kayaks or rock climbing up Sugar Loaf in the summer, or snowshoeing through the bluff side in the winter.Garvin Heights Vineyards is the perfect place to try more than a dozen wines produced right here in Winona using Minnesota grapes. Their deck offers a 7-mile view, allowing you to unwind and relax with a bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers.
Day 2Start your morning with a visit to Windom Park just off Huff Street. The fountain has a bronze statue of Princess Wenonah, for which the city is named, surrounded by historic, Victorian-era homes will captivate you.Stop in at Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka—one of only two basilicas in Minnesota and 70th in the United States—and see why the church is such a prominent fixture in the city’s skyline. Ornate domes are adorned with beautiful stained glass windows dedicated to various saints with inscriptions in Polish.Continue your journey of Winona’s Polish ancestry at the Polish Cultural Institute & Museum along Second Street. Visit Lake Park and walk along the paths, stroll the Rose Garden and take in the view of the historic Band Shell where concerts are still held in the summertime. Veterans’ Park also offers remembrance to those who have fought for our country.Top off your stay with a night on the town. Dine at one of our many local eateries, offering a variety of fare from fresh, gourmet burgers to decadent local duck confit. Next, take in an evening performance during the festival season or at Winona’s college campuses. A night cap can be found at an abundance of pubs or watering holes in the city.
Sugar Loaf BluffReaching nearly 85 feet into the sky, Sugar Loaf is a storied symbol of Winona and known by all as its most distinguishing landmark. The result of quarrying in the late 1800’s, the bluff is synonymous with an old Native American legend that paints the rock as the cap of Dakota Chief Wapasha. Hiking trails along its back side offer adventure seekers a unique vantage point to see the city. Corner of Highway 61 & 43.

Historic. Enchanting. Beautiful. From the top of its towering bluffs to the cornices of its extravagant architecture, Winona is in a class alone when it comes to things to do and see. Home to vibrant music and film festivals as well as world-class theater and museums, Winona dominates in the world of arts and culture as the most wonderfully eclectic and urbane small town in the Midwest. With an arts scene where you can see everything from Picasso, to Yo-Yo Ma, to Tiffany Stained Glass, this is a community that radiates big-city swagger all year long.

Downtown Winona hosts the largest collection of Victorian commercial architecture in Minnesota outside St. Paul, and also boasts grand examples of Richardsonian Roman-esque, Prairie School and Egyptian Revival architecture.
Not only are the buildings picturesque but the stores hold unique treasures that can only be found here. Winona’s store owners are proud of the commu-nity and will delight in filling guests in on the next stop of their journey.
Take a swing through downtown Winona and soak up our history, as well as our local charm.
