Mary Grace Otis

Project Coordinator, Content Developer and Editor

Mary Grace started her career 15 years ago as a copy editor for one of the largest regional

lifestyle magazines in the country (Southern Living). There she honed her writing and

editing skills while fine-tuning text on topics such as travel, home-décor, cooking, and people

and places. She worked with teams to create magazine-quality custom publications for

retailers and state tourism associations. Longing for a foray into international travel herself,

Mary Grace applied for a Fulbright Journalism Fellowship in Germany, and several months

later she was awarded the grant. While in Germany, she interned on the political desks of

two of that country’s most prestigious publications (Die Zeit and Der Speigel) and also wrote

a weekly column in a local German paper about cultural differences between the U.S. and

former East Germany.

Her love of travel kept her globetrotting from Europe to Asia, where she worked as

Communications Coordinator for a non-profit organization in Bangalore, India. Developing

press releases, newspaper articles, brochures, and funding materials, Mary Grace put words

to work on behalf of underprivileged people with disabilities. Since returning from India, she

has continued to write for newspapers, non-profit organizations, and for-profit companies—

as well as finish her largest document to date, her master’s thesis in monitoring and evaluation.

Always eager to tackle a new type of project, Mary Grace draws on her natural curiosity and

years of experience to meet client expectations in creative and innovative ways. Her familiarity

with a variety of publication styles, organizations, and audiences gives her the ability to craft

messages that meet clients’ specific needs and express client goals in a way that is fresh as

well as professional.

MCC students shop for free business attire at Ellen’s Closet.

On Our Campus

Outfitting Future Professionals

Supporting women through WIE is one of The Foundation’s major efforts. Ellen’s Closet started with a small collection of Dr. Ellen Howe’s gently used clothing and has grown into a welcoming place where both male and female students can “shop” for free clothing to establish a professional wardrobe.

Whether we like it or not, a good resume,

outstanding credentials, and an intelligent

interview can all be ignored if a job applicant is

not properly dressed. Though our primary focus

at MCC is equipping students with the

knowledge and skills necessary to establish

lasting and fulfilling careers, we also know that

appropriate attire is a necessity—and often, a

costly one. To meet this need, the college and

The Foundation established Ellen’s Closet in

early 2000 as a major component to the Women

in Education Program (WIE). For the past 14

years, thousands of MCC students and

community members have benefited from the

availability of free business attire for anyone who

needs it. Named for Dr. Ellen Howe, former

Foundation board member, MCC Trustee,

community leader, and advocate of education

and job skills training, Ellen’s Closet provides

professional clothing for approximately 200

students each year. Students involved in the

MCC merchandising courses assist in managing

the closet.

Since 1999, The Foundation has championed the

support of women through the WIE Program.

Through financial assistance for non-academic

needs, personal and professional mentoring,

fellowships, and enrichment programs, WIE helps

women overcome many challenges and barriers to

their education and professional growth.

Free professional training programs include

career preparation, marketing, financial

planning, and more. Thanks to the valuable

resources provided through WIE and Ellen’s

Closet, making a good first impression is the last

thing students have to worry about.

REMOVING BARRIERS

TO EMPLOYMENT,

ONE SUIT AT A TIME

“Our job is easier than one

might imagine. The fellows in

our fellowship program have

the ingredients to be successful.

We as mentors simply help

them find what is already

there, so they can obtain their

own personal success.”

2013 ANNUAL REPORT

She faced an awful dilemma following her husband’s death. “What will

I do with 50 guitars, amplifiers, soundboards, and enough music books to

fill a music store? The basement was stuffed with stuff. This is his life, and I

have to sell or get rid of this,” thought Pam Price. Upon further reflection

she asked herself, “What can I do to honor his life?”

It was his love for the Lord and music that first attracted Pam to her

husband, Lee Price. They met at Flint’s AC/Delphi plant, married and moved

to Davison where Pam was born and reared.

“Lee loved music and you could hardly see him without a guitar in his

hand,” Pam recalled. “He took classes at the Flint Institute of Music, and

anything he could learn more in music, he would. He could make music out

of any instrument in his hand.”

Over the years, Lee built a cherished collection of guitars, equipment

and music books. The couple, comfortable homebodies who were not

interested in travel, enjoyed sitting in the backyard with an 8-track tape

deck with Lee strumming the guitar. Pam especially enjoyed hearing him

play the Les Paul guitar she bought him before they married.

As members of the Davison United Methodist Church, Pam and Lee

were accustomed to tithing, and gave to other charities as well. The couple’s

philanthropic values were rooted in Pam’s parents and their faith.

Lee would ask everyone, “Do you know Jesus?” He evangelized

to everyone they encountered and played guitar in a local praise band.

In July 2005, Lee died suddenly leaving Pam with an enormous collection

of instruments and a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Pam’s sister connected her to the Community Foundation as a way

to preserve her husband’s legacy. Pam established the Lee Price Fund.

The endowment will forever benefit instrumental music students at the

Flint Institute of Music.

“What more Christian purpose can I do than helping someone who

cannot afford music lessons?” said Pam. As Lee would say, “That’s a

message from Jesus. You just hang on to that.”
