It took a couple quarters to get going against the Knights, but the Bears dominated the second half to tally the lopsided win. UPIKE led just 9-3 at the half, but scored 24 unanswered points on its way to the 29-point win. The Bears’ defense held the Knights to just a field goal in the first half and didn’t give up a touchdown until halfway through the fourth quarter when Graham Johnston’s seven yard scamper made it 33-11. Credit Jack Hopkins for leading that charge as he finished with a team-best 11 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss. Quintin Salley and Taeron Brown chipped in with six stops each as the Knights could only log 13 first downs on the day. A pair of firsts in program history could be logged on Saturday. At 3-1 in the MSC East, UPIKE can earn a share of its first conference championship with a win over Georgwtown. Cumberlands lost to the Tigers last Saturday to finish 4-1 in the East, leaving Georgetown as the only team without a divisional loss. With a UPIKE win on Saturday, all three teams would be tied at the top of the standings with 4-1 records and tri-champions would be named. The division’s automatic bid to the NAIA National Playoffs would go to the highest ranked team of the bunch in the final poll. Then again, a Georgetown win would give it the outright title. Taking a look at the all-time series between UPIKE and Georgetown, it’s been one that the Tigers have dominated at 14-0. Here are all of the scorers: 37-26 (2014), 48-13 (2013), 35-10 (2012), 45- 21 (2011), 70-58 (2010), 45-0 (2009), 59-21 (2008), 45-7 (2007), 41-10 (2006), 21-19 (2005), 28-14 (2004), 42-6 (2003), 23-6 (2002), 56-21 (2001). The Tigers are the only team that PIkeville has played in all 14 seasons it has sponsored football. The closest game was the two-point loss in 2005, the same season Pikeville made its lone NAIA Playoff appearance. Last season’s 11-point deficit was the next closest in the series. There’s a dance song on the radio asking listeners to “Hit the Quan”, but opposing defenses being able to slow down UPIKE running back Quan Weaver hasn’t been music to their ears. Instead, Weaver has shot off on a record-setting pace, coming into Saturday’s game with multiple school records. He is currently the record holder in: points in a season (96), touchdowns in a sea- son (16), rushing yards in a season (1,420 - also leads the NAIA), yards per game (142), 100-yard games in a season (8), rushing touchdowns in a season (15). As a team, UPIKE is 12th nationally in total rushing yards with 2,421. The UPIKE offense ranks 19th in the NAIA in total yards with 437.7 a game, which is boosted by ranking 12th in total rushing yards. Another good mark for the Bears is coming in 12th nationally in first downs with 23.4 per contest. On the defensive side, UPIKE is allowing just 180.9 passing yards per game, which ranks 19th in the NAIA. Jack Hopkins joined Weaver as a UPIKE single-season record holder last weekend as his 59 solo tackles are tied for the most in program history with Sean McKinley’s 2006 total. 2015 UPIKE Bears Football
