Dear Resident:

On behalf of my colleagues on the Town Board, I would like to wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for doing your part to make Babylon an environmental leader on Long Island.

Last year, the Town implemented our new yard waste collection system, which was a tremendous success due to your participation. This new system has saved countless miles of fuel while also increasing the safety and efficiency of the pickup process. Make sure to check the month of February to see when your yard waste will be collected.

This calendar has all you need to know about your garbage and recyclables pickup. See the months of March and August for complete pickup information. I urge you to take advantage of our S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Days on April 11th and October 10th. For more information about S.T.O.P. Days, please see the month of April.

Inside you will also find important information about Town of Babylon services and programs, as well as exciting news from our community and messages from some of our elected officials. Make sure to take a look and see what is available to you as a resident.

I thank you for doing your part to help protect Babylon’s environment. Have a great 2015!

Sincerely,

CouncilmanTom Donnelly

Town of Babylon Joins Wounded Warrior Project for Soldier Ride

Last July, thousands of Babylon residents braved the heat to show their support for wounded service men and women as the Town of Babylon hosted the Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride for the seventh consecutive year. The 25 mile ride starts at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and winds through the Town, crossing Robert Moses State Bridge and ending at Overlook Beach. Over 1,000 cyclists participated in last year’s ride, raising over $100,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Town also hosts a reception dinner for the Wounded Warriors taking part in the ride earlier in the week. Check our website for ticket information.

For information on the 2015 Soldier Ride and Dinner, visit www.townofbabylon.com.

Step into the past at the Town of Babylon History Museum, located in Old Town Hall on Main Street in Babylon. The history museum displays revolving exhibits that feature different aspects of Town history. The museum also includes interactive displays that enable residents to view historical photographs and features. The Town has also created a permanent exhibit by reconstructing the original jail cells in the basement of Old Town Hall that were once used by the former Babylon Police Department. For hours and information, check the Town of Babylon website or call (631) 587-3750.

A Message from:Councilwoman Jackie GordonChair, Veterans Advisory CouncilWarriors, As a retired Lt. Colonel in the United States Army Reserves and veteran of the Afghan and Iraqi campaigns, I know how much it means to show support for our men and women in uniform . I am proud to say that the Town of Babylon goes above and beyond to show appreciation for the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much in defense of our country. Through-out the year, we hold numerous events to support the troops, including the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride and the Run for the Warriors. In the fall, we hold the POW/MIA Vigil to show respect for those who never came home, in addition to Veterans Awareness Week and the Flag Retirement Ceremony at Town Hall (see the November page for more info on those two).

Town of Babylon Beautification CommitteeCouncilwoman Jackie Gordon, Chairperson

Girl Scouts Beautify “Vision of Hope” Garden for Breast Cancer Awareness

The Town of Babylon’s beautification site adoption program enables everyone in the community to play a role in maintaining our quality of life. Groups can maintain a beautification spot, help keep a road clean or beautify a park to help keep Babylon looking great. The Town provides equipment and supplies to participants. Interested organizations should contact Councilwoman Jackie Gordon’s office at (631) 957-3127 for more information.

Last summer, members of Girl Scout Troop 382 took part in beautification efforts at the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition’s Vision of Hope Garden, located on the southeast corner of Town Hall Park. As part of the clean-up effort, the scouts joined volunteers to clean up and plant flowers at the Breast Cancer Bow area of the garden. With their hard work, these volunteers helped raise awareness regarding the work that the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition and improved the appearance of an important Town landmark.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Gordon recently hosted the Volunteer Appreciation Reception celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Program at the Deer Park Fire House. Over 175 guests, including civic associations, community leaders and program volunteers, enjoyed the festivities that featured a salute to retiring Assemblyman Robert Sweeney. Supervisor Schaffer and Councilwoman Gordon expressed their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to all the attendees - volunteers who generously give their personal time and talents in helping keep our town clean and beautiful.

Scouts, Veterans Retire Flags at Town Hall Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and the Town Board joined with local veterans groups to instruct dozens of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts the proper way to respectfully dispose of old American flags. Over a dozen scout groups from the area participated in the event, in addition to various local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion posts. Also at the ceremony, the Town unveiled signage at Town Hall declaring Babylon a “Proud Purple Heart Town” in honor of those who have earned the distinction throughout our nation’s history.
