Program Description

The Summer Academy of Mathematics and Science (SAMS) program is a rigorous academic enrichment program designed to foster excitement, among high school students, in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Students reside for six-weeks on the campus of Morgan State University and attend mathematics, computer science, and professional development classes. The ultimate goal of the SAMS program is to increase the number of students from underrepresented communities who pursue math and science-related majors in college and, ultimately, math and science-related careers. However, SAMS welcomes any student who is passionate about math and science, is motived to excel academically, and wishes to spend an exciting summer learning with a group of like-minded peers. SAMS students attend mathematics and computer science each day, Monday through Friday, during the six-week program. Math placement decisions are based on a diagnostic exam given on the first day of class. Accelerated courses are available. Students will receive credit for their mathematics classes. In addition to math and computer coursework, students participate in laboratory experiments, case studies, faculty seminars, hands-on projects, professional development seminars, and other enrichment activities. These activities are designed to enhance the weekly program themes which include actuarial science, biology, chemistry, computational mathematics, engineering and physics. The benefits of participation in the SAMS program extend well beyond textbook knowledge. Students are able to investigate various careers in mathematics and the sciences, obtain exposure to the rigorous academic environment that is characteristic of these disciplines, acquire important time management and study skills, and also work on their critical thinking, civic awareness, team-building and leadership abilities. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the STEM majors offered by the School of Computer, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences, including Morgan’s Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, the only such program in the state of Maryland. SAMS students who return to Morgan to pursue the degree may qualify for full tuition scholarships.
