We welcome the following new teachers who will be classroom teachers for 2015.

I’m sure you’ll make them feel very welcome as members of the Donburn school community.

This term Foundation have been

learning about fire safety and

education. We had two very exciting

visits from the Nunawading fire

brigade.

Crawl down low, and GO, GO, GO!

Stop, drop, cover, roll.

Foundation learnt about who to

call when there is a fire and

what to do. They also learnt

about the various parts of a fire

engine and what they do in order

to help people.

Wurundjeri Stories at Pound Bend, Warrandyte Recently Grade 4 students enjoyed an excursion to Pound Bend Reserve, Warrandyte to complement our classroom learning about early Australia history. We were guided by Uncle Bill and Mandy Nicholson, descendants of the local Aborigines, along a signage trail which tells the history, culture, traditional life and beliefs of their people, the Wurundjeri. They also brought with them traditional artefacts to show us. Our excursion was supported by Manningham City Council. Here are some reflections and photos from the day:

Something interesting I learnt was that when aboriginal babies were born they are carried in a wooden bowl. They are wrapped or lying on a possum skin. Every year as you get older your tribe adds a patch of possum skin to your birth possum skin. In winter when it is cold you wear it skin on the outside and fur an the inside to stay nice and warm. Lacey S 4F

I learnt that the actual name of the Yarra River is ‘Birrarung River.’ Birrarung means ‘river of mists,’ because when you go camping you would see mist dance on the river. On the day I enjoyed painting myself with ochre. Ochre is a chalky rock you grind with a grinding stone and you mix it with water. It is like a paint. You can have purple ochre, red ochre and a variety of other colours. Samantha T. 4F

I learnt that the Aborigines went to the top of the valley and whirled their woomera (aboriginal version of the telephone) around and it would echo and signal that there was a corroboree, meeting or gathering happening. This was the invitation for neighbouring tribes. The Aborigines would snap a spear in half to symbolise that they would not harm anyone. Eleanor M. 4F

Page 5: 2015 - donburn.vic.edu.auSamantha T. 4F I learnt that the Aborigines went to the top of the valley and whirled their woomera (aboriginal version of the telephone) around and it would

Wurundjeri Stories at Pound Bend, Warrandyte

I enjoyed Pound Bend because it had a lot of heritage and history about when the Aborigines were first here. I also learnt that when a baby is born it gets passed through the smoke from a fire to clean the body of the baby. I found that fascinating. Zoe G. 4F

On the excursion to Pound Bend I learnt that in 1851 the Europeans went to find gold in Warrandyte. They blew up a hole in the rock to make a long tunnel. Did you know? Aboriginals thought gold was useless because it was of no value to them. It was a soft metal and they couldn’t make weapons from it. They used to throw it away if they found it! Alexander A. 4F

Pound Bend excursion was great because I liked putting some ochre on my face and pretending to hunt for kangaroos in the Aboriginal dance we were doing. I liked the stories about the Yarra River and how the European people made the tunnel by blowing up the rock so they could find gold. Samuel K. 4F

Three interesting things I found out are: *In 1851 the Europeans blew up rock to make a tunnel at Pound Bend on the Yarra River! **The juice of a fern stops mosquito bites from itching. ***Babies were wrapped in possum skin when they were born. Kaleb D. 4F

I enjoyed going down to the old tunnel that the Europeans made in 1870 by blowing up the rock. It was really interesting to see the water flowing so fast. I had an awesome time on the Pound Bend excursion! Kiara A. 4F

Wurundjeri Stories at Pound Bend, Warrandyte

My highlight at Pound Bend was the ochre body paint. We all got to try it on our faces. It was weird putting it on! I learnt that ochre body paint shines in the dark if you are near a fire. Europeans thought that Aborigines were skeletons when they were dancing at night time. Anson T. 4B

I learnt that it is respectful to Aboriginal culture and our guide Bill to call him Uncle Bill. Lachlan C. 4B

I really enjoyed learning about plants that could help you feel better. Bracken from a fern was useful when you had a mosquito bite, to stop the itch. If you smelt eucalyptus leaves it would make you feel better when you had a cold. Ruby M. 4B

I learnt that the origin of AFL football was from an Aboriginal game called marngrook. I also learnt that the football was made from possum skin, there were no teams, no scores, just kicking and marking. Luke L. 4B

Today at Pound Bend Reserve I learnt that ochre is a stone. It is ground into powder then water is added and mixed into a paste. Ochre is used as a body paint by Aborigines. Mandy and Uncle Bill, our hosts, let us paint ourselves to show us what they do for a ceremony. Tarryn D. 4B

I learnt that the Aborigines make traps to catch eels because they are too slippery to catch with bare hands. Tallulah C. 4B

Page 7: 2015 - donburn.vic.edu.auSamantha T. 4F I learnt that the Aborigines went to the top of the valley and whirled their woomera (aboriginal version of the telephone) around and it would

Wurundjeri Stories at Pound Bend, Warrandyte

Today we went to Pound Bend and I learnt about Aborigines and how they lived. The thing that shocked us the most was about the Stolen Generation. The Europeans took the Aboriginal children away from their mums and it was sad. Colin M. 4B

Something I found very interesting was that when you were born you received a special totem of an animal. You can’t eat or hunt that animal as it would be disrespectful but you were allowed to wear that animal’s skin. Jieh Ni K. 4B

At Pound Bend Reserve I learned how to make ochre body paint. It was really fun and easy to make, and it looked awesome on our skin. I thought I should try something that the aborigines used to do. Harrison B. 4B

My highlight was putting ochre body paint on. Something I learned was that when you catch an eel you need to bite its head so it doesn’t escape because it is slippery. An interesting fact is that the tunnel at Pound Bend was built to help find gold. Niki R. 4B

Wurundjeri Stories at Pound Bend, Warrandyte

Something I thought that was memorable was that the aboriginal women wove traps for the men to trap eels with. They would put the trap in the water with bait at the end then the eel would swim through and get trapped. Saina D. 4M

What I found interesting from the excursion was that a wedge-tailed eagle called Bunjil created the Wurundjeri people. The three feathers on Bunjil’s tail represent land, life and law. Ashley H. 4M

I enjoyed putting ochre body paint on. It was really fun, especially when we got to do the traditional dance. All the girls did the actions of rocking a baby, picking fruit, sweeping then starting a fire. The boys acted as hunters and carried the animal they caught to the fire to eat. Marwa A. 4M

I really enjoyed playing with the possum-skin football (marngrook) and pretending to go hunting for animals in the traditional dance. Ashton M. 4M

In 1870 at Pound Bend, Warrandyte a tunnel was built to connect two parts of the river. This was so they could mine and pan for gold. Markus L. 4M

Page 9: 2015 - donburn.vic.edu.auSamantha T. 4F I learnt that the Aborigines went to the top of the valley and whirled their woomera (aboriginal version of the telephone) around and it would

Wurundjeri Stories at Pound Bend, Warrandyte

I thought the story about the animal totems was interesting because the aborigines are given one at birth. They could not eat their own totem animal or hunt it. Jaimee M. 4M

I enjoyed the dancing because it was fun when we had to pretend to throw a spear. After that we saw a kookaburra and a lizard. Muriey M. 4M

At Pound Bend I enjoyed doing the traditional dance. I played the clapping sticks. We got to see a marngrook which is an early football the aborigines used to play with. Ella M. 4M

The Pound Bend Reserve is situated on a horse-shoe shaped part of the Yarra (Birrarung) River which provided fertile summer hunting, fishing and bush tucker for aborigines for thousands of years, up to 1870. When gold was discovered at Warrandyte, a tunnel was mined through the rock to divert the river and traditional aboriginal life here was lost. Take your family for a picnic and enjoy walks along the signage trail, the river and see the tunnel. This is our local history!

I really enjoyed the ochre body paint and the dancing. The possum-skin coat was amazing. Alyssa B. 4M

Dear family and friends of the Donburn school community.

I am aware of the concerns regarding the depleted condition of the main student toilet block.

They are not in standing with the rest of the school.

On behalf of the School Council I have written to Peter Greenwell the Regional Manager of

DEECD and requested he visit the school to discuss.

The School Council hopes this meeting will assist to expedite the priority given to these

capital works.

Yours sincerely,

Hoop Time Basketball Congratulations to our All Star Year 5/6 Girls who have won their way through to the Grand final in Hoop Time Basketball. What a magnificent effort by not only the girls but also the coach, Kerry Brown. It is the first time Donburn has achieved this. The girls will now compete against Rowville Primary School to determine the State Champion. The match will be played at 12.40pm before the NBL 2 pm game between the CTI Melbourne United & New Zealand Breakers at Hisense Arena on Sunday, 14 December. Good Luck, girls and go Donburn!!! Congratulations also to the Year 3/4 girls who competed last week in the Hoop Time State Championships and came 5th in all of Victoria. A great effort to all, including the

coach Mr. Souvatsis.

Sof-crosse Competition Some of our Year 5 and 6 students represented Donburn in the Eastern Primary Sof-crosse Tournament. We entered three boys and three girls teams. The children won, lost and drew games and we had 3 teams in finals. Our second girls team won the grand final against Mooroolbark East PS. It was very exciting with Ashleigh B scoring after about 7 minutes of extra time! Students and teachers had a great day!

‘John Hanson’ District Sports Fun Day Yesterday all of our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the annual sports fun day against some schools in our district. We had two teams in soccer, softball, cricket, rounders, basketball, netball and one volleyball team. All children had a great day at Donvale Primary School and all teachers were extremely impressed with the excellent skills and sportsmanship displayed by all Donburn students. Our school won the ‘John Hanson’ shield because we won more sports overall than any other school. A magnificent effort everyone!! The winning sof-crosse team!

Well done girls!

CANTEEN ROSTER PLEA

Hi everyone, I cannot believe that we are nearly at the end of the year and I am starting to plan for next year. I would like to take the opportunity to “THANK” everyone who has volunteered this year and helped the school canteen out in so many ways. Whether it be cutting up lettuce, serving children over the counter or cutting up hot dog rolls, I really could not do it without you. I am going to miss every single mum who is not returning next year for various reasons. Thank you to all the wonderful mums and the four dads who have selflessly given up their time to help out at our canteen. 2015 is just around the corner and this brings me to ask for volunteers for next year. I know that we are all busy, but it is for just a few hours once a month. The canteen runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Any help would be appreciated, it is a flexible roster and we can accommodate your needs. You can team up with a friend, or split a shift between friends. You don’t have to worry about being on your own as I will always be there. You will meet some new people, have a laugh and enjoy a coffee and sample lunch from our new menu; (now that’s an offer too good to refuse). Helpers get their lunch for free. Please consider volunteering, it can be mums, dads, grandparents, aunties or carers. If you are not ready to volunteer permanently, you may consider putting your name down as an emergency helper. There are times when one of our rostered mums may have to cancel due to sickness or other commitments, so it would be great to have someone whom I could call on, it may never happen, but at least I have an option. School canteens can only run with volunteer help, please think about getting involved and not waiting for someone else who is waiting for someone else to put their hand up. If you would like to text me I will contact you ASAP, my number is: 0434 140 739 or I can be found in the canteen. Thank you Vitina Bakker 0434 140 739
