SARATOGA SPRINGS >> SaratogaSprings finally has the chance toenjoy American Pharoah. But will it be in the fashion

of another thrilling victory, thistime in the 146th Travers Stakesat Saratoga Race Course, or willit be as a monumental upset atthe nations oldest sporting venuealso known as The Graveyard ofChampions? This is what youwant to see in

horse racing, trainer Bob Baffertsaid of his Triple Crown cham-pion, the first in 37 years. Wehave some really great horsesthat run and put out big perfor-mances, but sometimes a lot of

people arent there to see them. Its unique that everyones herewatching this horse. Its true. After American Pharoahs team

announced that Saratoga wouldbe the champions next stop inhis historic 3-year-old campaign for an already sold-out crowd of50,000 fans NYRA (New YorkRacing Association) decided tooffer another chance for fans tocome see American Pharoah be-fore the big race.It decided to have American

Pharoah and other Travers com-petitors gallop in front of the usu-ally smaller breakfast crowd. Itwasnt a small crowd on Friday, though. This is pretty incredible, Baf-

fert said as his colt prepared to gal-

lop over the Saratoga main trackin front of nearly 15,000 fans onFriday morning. Ive never seenanything like it. But this Phar-oah, thats what he brings withhim. Just to be a part of it, Imvery thankful that he came alongwhen he did.As for the horse, American

Pharoah looked ready and en-ergetic as he hit the main trackbriefly for the second straight day(a gallop which can be watchedin a first-person point of view onNYRAs YouTube channel). He loves to train, Baffert said

He loves to run. Thats why werehere. For a while, it was unknown

whether or not American Phar-oah would run in the Mid-Sum-mer Derby. Baffert, who won

the Haskell Invitational at Mon-mouth last year with Bayern be-fore running him unsuccessfullyin the Travers, and then went onto be victorious in the BreedersCup, had considered followingin a similar path with AmericanPharoah this year. But he had tobe sure that was what was bestfor the horse. He had to show us that he was

still on his game, especially his en-ergy level, Baffert said.He did just that and more,

breezing several times at Del MarRacetrack before his connectionsannounced hed run against famil-iar foes in Saratogasmarque race.Ive never had (a horse) that

Ive shipped so many times, Baf-fert said. It usually wears on him(but) he keeps bringing it every

time, Baffert said. Those foes include a trio com-

ing out of the Grade 2 Jim Dandyat Saratoga on August 1, includingthewinner Texas Red, the second-place finisher Frosted, and thefourth-place finisher Frammento.Second- and third-place Grade 1Haskell finishers Keen Ice andUp-start, respectively, will also be tak-ing their shot at American Phar-oah, as will several other horsesall opening up with double-digitodds on the morning line.Im really enjoying him and

Im glad that everybodys here towatch him because its rare, Baf-fert said. Thirty-seven years ...Now I know why it was 37 years. It takes something really spec-tacular like him to do what hesdone.

FOREVER IN LOVE between rivals after springing from the starting gate, workedhimself to the front and over to the rail, was on what amounted to an open leaddespite carving out a pedestrian initial split when ambushed by a pair of foesbetween callsdown the backstretch, momentarily surrendering the lead to one of them, that being RO BEAR, with the other rival getting takenback, regainedcontrol by the half mile pole and shook free of the competition once more, got settled into upper stretch beforeswitched over to a drive, drew off to a lengthy margin before being geared down in the final seventy yards. SAX CHANGEtuckedalong the inside route shortly after the break, stayed put for theopening three-quarters, swung out, finishing the move in the fourpath, ralliedwell enough to garner the place, although clearly no match for the runawaywinner. RO BEAR travelled three wide onthe opening bend, was let out a notch and rushed up with a sudden burst of speed towards the top one, joined in the final stagesof that middle move by a rank-on-the-bit HIGH NOON COCKTAIL, tookover the lead for a spell, while the aforementioned rivalgot backed out of whatwas once an abbreviated three-way tussle for command, turned the top back over to FOREVER IN LOVEbefore the end of the backstretch, stalked that foe from the two path, requiring some encouragement from the pilot to undergo thetask, got left behind once the leader was called upon for run himself in upper stretch, then got outfinished for place honors. THEREGOES BEN saved ground for six furlongs, took the four path for entrance into the stretch, heavily roused by the rider, lacked awinning response. HIGH NOON COCKTAIL took up position in the two path, reserved in the early going, became agitated on thebit when joined byRO BEAR suddenly midway down the backstretch, picked up the speed and vied for command for a few stridesbetween rivals before becoming responsive to the firmgrip of its pilot and getting taken out of the pace picture, cut over to the railapproaching the half mile pole, gave way after spinning into the lane. BLUFF HARBOR raced along the outside and was outrun.SQUASHVILLE ROAD three wideon the clubhouse turn, failed to menace.

    FRIDAYSWORKOUTS

    NYRA

Trainer John Shirreffs, who is best known for hiswork with the legendaryand beloved Zenyatta andfamiliar with the buzz gen-erated by a great horse whocaptures the hearts andimagination of the public, took in the scene Fridaymorning when an enor-mous crowd turned out towatch American Pharoahgallop.

It was exciting, and itwas great to see all of thefans turn out. It was really

a great morning, he said.Shirreffs trains Travers

contender Smart Transi-tion for owner and breederArnold Zetcher. The Cur-lin Stakes winner was alsoon the track during thereserved period to hackaround and just jog aspart of his final prepara-tions.

Hall of Fame rider JohnVelasquez was in the ironsand will ride the son ofSmart Strike for the firsttime in the Travers.

I dont know if my horsethought all of the cheering

was for him this morn-ing, but the crowd defi-nitely was cheering forJohnny (Velazquez) whenthey went by and were an-nounced, he said. I thinkits great that AmericanPharoah came to the Trav-ers, which is such a historicrace. I think the fans are re-ally looking forward to it,and I am as well.

A lthough AmericanPharoah has already tri-umphed at the classic1 -mile distance, thelightly raced Smart Tran-sition has never traveled

beyond 1 1/8 miles, whichhe tried for the initial timein the Curlin. But his ped-igree indicates the longerthey go, the more he willrelish it.

That was the thingthat made us think aboutthis race after the Cur-lin because he finished sowell, said Shirreffs. I al-ways liked this horse buthe never really got the triphe needed, and then in theCurlin, [jockey] Junior [Al-varado] gave him a greattrip. As far as physically,he is able to do a lot more

now than what he couldfourmonths ago. Hesmuchfitter andmuchmore expe-rienced on the racetrack.

Nonetheless, SmartTransition, who has twowins, one second and onethird in six starts, has yetto encounter the crowds, the cameras and the noisehe will on Saturday start-ing with the walkover.

For this mornings ses-sion, there was such a hugecrowd cheering and clap-ping when they announcedJohnny Velazquez, saidShirreffs.

SARATOGA SPRINGS >> Allthe signs are good for TexasRed.The Breeders Cup Juve-

nile winner will attempt toeven the score with Ameri-can Pharoah in the TraversStakes on Saturday. In their only other meet-

ing, he was third to theTriple Crown winner inthe Grade 1 FrontRunnerStakes last fall at SantaAnita.Tra ined by Keith

Desormeaux and riddenby his brother Kent, TexasRed comes off an impor-tant score in the Jim DandyStakes at this meet on Aug.1.In that event, Texas Red

made his customary moveearlier than usual, gettinginto the mix with a lot ofrunning left to do.Or so it seemed.Physically he was more

forward, but the pacewas slower, said KeithDesormeaux. To me, hewas running his race and itwas a great judge of pace byKent. He was not runningany differently than he usu-ally does, the pace was justslower. At least inmy obser-vation.The Jim Dandy splits

were indeed slow in com-parison to the other racesTexas Red has been in. Thepace was 48 seconds for ahalf-mile and 1:11 4/5 for 6furlongs, which translateson paper to several lengthsslower than the pace in hisother stakes. The Jim Dandy is the key

local prep for the Travers. At 1 1/8 miles it is a fur-

long shorter than the Mid-Summer Derby, and offersthe chance to get a race overthe Saratoga track. In the 15 runnings of

both in this century, ninewinners of the Travers havecome out of the Jim Dandy. In addition to his Jim

Dandy experience, TexasRed has settled into hiscalm Saratoga surround-ings to the complete satis-faction of his trainer. His main track barn is in

a corner that is adjacent tothe Yaddo grounds.I think the setting has

helped in a big way, saidKeith Desormeaux. Its alot more quiet here and itmakes a difference in theirdemeanor.Texas Red has had two

fine works since the JimDandy, the second a solid 6furlongs in 1:13 1/5 last Sat-urday.He has been excel-

lent here, said KiethDesormeaux. He had twostrong gallops out afterthose works and Ive got nocomplaints.Texas Red, is a son of

Afleet Alex, the sire of Trav-ers winner Afleet Alex.He has made eight

starts in his career, earn-ing $1,692,300 with threewins, three seconds andone third. The Travers is the big-

gest of his life so far, andall indications are that heis ready for it.

SARATOGASPRINGS>> As the onlymultiple stakes-winner in thefield, Good Luck Gus probablydeserved more respect than the7-2 odds (third of six starters) hewas sent off at in Fridays AlbanyStakes. The 3-year-old Lookin AtLucky colt will no doubt be givenmore respect next time after com-ing from off the pace to win the$250,000 stakes for state-bred3-year-olds by half a length.

Force andOne Sidedmademostof the running, and Forcewas stillin front approaching the eighthpole. But Good Luck Gus, afterjockey Luis Saez appeared to re-ject an outside move before split-ting horses to his inside, quicklyestablished a short lead and heldit to the wire. One Sided finishedsecond. The running time for ninefurlongs was 1:50.81.

I tried to look for room, but ev-eryone was moving in and out, said Saez, who rode three winnerson Friday. When I had a little op-portunity, we grabbed it, and hekept going.

Good Luck Gus ran decently inthe first two legs of the Big Ap-ple Triple, finishing second in the

Mike Lee at Belmont and thenfourth in the New York Derby atFinger Lakes. The Albany winimproves his record to 4-3-0in 10 starts. The $150,000 win-ners share boosts his earnings to$513,096. Rudy Rodriguez con-ditions Good Luck Gus for own-ersMichael Dubb, Bethlehem Sta-bles and The Elkstone Group. TheAlbany winner was bred in NewYork by Fred W. Hertrich III.

Race 9 Yaddo StakesWith earnings of over $1.2 mil-

lion, and a resume that includeda win and five placings in Grade1 competition, Discreet Marq wasclearly the class of the field in the$150,000 Yaddo Stakes for olderfillies and mares on turf.

The 5-year-oldmare, dispatchedat 1-2, has usually been on the leadinherwins, but onFriday she racedin third most of the way around. She poked a head in front at theeighth pole but was almost imme-diately swallowed up by the clos-ers, with longshot TheTeaCups (9-1) who was still 7 lengths be-hindon the turn closing fastest ofall to get up by a length in 1:42.92for 1 1/16 miles on turf. It was thefirst stakeswin for The TeaCups, aformer claimerwho haswon threeof her last five starts.

SARATOGASPRINGS>> There werethree big changes for this yearsSword Dancer Invitational. First, the race was moved to Trav-ers Day. Second, the purse wasbumped to $1million. And finally,in a not unrelated development, the race has an international fla-vor including horses that havewon major stakes in Europe,Dubai, Hong Kong and SouthAmerica the likes of which itrarely manages to attract.Heading the four-horse inter-

national squad is Flintshire, a$5.3 million earner who is bestknown in these parts for justmissing in last years BreedersCup Turf, beaten half a length byU.S. turf champ Main Sequence. The 5-year-old son of Dansili, whose biggest victory came inlast years Hong Kong Vase, hasbeen the runner-up in a numberof major stakes, finishing secondtwice behind European Horse ofthe Year Treve. With extensiveexperience at the Sword Dancersmile-and-a-half distance, Flint-shire (8-5 on the morning line)will take some beating in this af-ternoons race. The lightly raced Guardini, a

group winner in both France andGermany, will also be running athis preferred distance. To date, the 4-year-old Dalakhani horsehas found Grade 1 competitiona little too steep, but the changeof scene (and the administrationof Lasix) may suit him. If his 15-1morning-line odds hold, Guar-dini is a very attractive overlay.Fixador, a multiple Grade 1

winner in his native Brazil, andthe German-bred Messi are nowbased in the U.S. Fixador was aclose second in his only Amer-ican graded race, and is com-ing off an off-the-board finish inthe Lure Stakes here on Aug 8.Messi has impressed in his twoU.S. starts, most recently an easywin at 1 3/8 miles here on Aug. 6.Like Guardini, he would be ap-pealing at his morning-line oddsof 10-1.The home forces will be well

    represented by the bard-knock-

ing veteran quartet of TwilightEclipse, Red Rifle, War Dancerand Imagining, all of whom haverun well at Saratoga.Twilight Eclipse, a five-time

graded winner, finally got hiselusive Grade 1 when he out-fin-ished War Dancer in the Mano War Stakes at Belmont threestarts back. The 6-year-old geld-ing, a son of the deceased Dy-naformer stallion Purim, hardlyever runs a bad one, and with

time off after a third in theUnited Nations Stakes on July 5,he could be tough to handle. Twi-light Eclipse was a close third inlast years Sword Dancer.Red Rifle is having arguably

the best year of his career atfive, and is coming off a pair ofgraded wins at Woodbine andin the Bowling Green Handi-cap here at Saratoga. The ver-satile gelding has been effectiveon turf, dirt and synthetics, and,

at 4-1, has been afforded a greatdeal of respect on the morningline.War Dancer is another one

who hardly ever runs a bad race. The 5-year-old War Front horseis experienced at 1 miles, aswell as in Grade 1 competition, and figures to be a pace factor inthe Sword Dancer.Imagining has run almost ex-

clusively in Grade 1 races sincewinning the 2014 Man o War.

The 7-year-old son of GiantsCauseway has been putting upsolid numbers despite not oftenmaking it into the winners cir-cle, and has never been off theboard in four starts at the Spa.Leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. hasthe mount. The Sword Dancer is the 10th

race on Saturdays card, with ascheduled post of 5:04 p.m. Itwill be broadcast on NBC SportsNetwork.

SARATOGA SPRINGS >> Thesongs at the CountingCrows concert at Sara-toga Performing ArtsCenter (SPAC) on Tuesdaymight sound a little differ-ent to longtime fans. Whyshouldnt they? Initially, the new songs the bandperformed even confusedits creator. When AdamDuritz started writing lyr-ics for the current Count-ing Crows album Some-where Under Wonder-land, he almost didntrecognize the person orthe meanings behind thewords that were landingon the page.

Its weird, he said ina recent phone interview.I didnt understand thesesongs the way I have al-ways understood mysongs. (Before) I had a gutfeeling. I knew what theywere. I knew how goodthey were right away. Butthese ones felt like muchmore of an impressioniststuff, like expressing stuffon a much broader level, all kinds of stories and im-agery and stuff Id nevergotten to use before whenIve just been writingabout myself in a room.

One day he was visitinga friend and fellow song-writer, Dave Godowsky(who often records un-der the name John Shade)and Duritz commentedabout feeling the songswere weirdly less per-sonal and maybe that waswhy he didnt understandthem.

Godowsky found thenew songs to be muchmore personal. I thinkyoure looking at the songswrong, Duritz said, quot-ing his friend.

I think youve beenwriting these stories inthis long form epic trag-edy about you being crazyand how it ****s up yourlife. Thats interesting andyouve been writing thislong form version of thatfor years.

But he goes Thats notall you are. You dont walkaround all day depressedmoaning poetically. Thatsnot who you are. The truthis youre funny, too, andhave dumb jokes and youthink of bizarre s*** all thetime. And like these songsare more like really whatits like to spend a coupleof hours inside your head.Theyre full of dumb jokesand its full of like reallyvivid, bizarre imagery andthey still have this emo-tional weight to them.

Its really kind of true,Duritz said. It was partsof myself I hadnt neces-

    sarily felt comfortable(before) projecting intosongs.

As Godowskys obser-vations suggest, Duritz, over Counting Crows sixprevious albums, becamefamous for writing seri-ous autobiographical lyr-ics that have examined hislife, his relationships andthe factors that form hispersonality and behavior.

One of the factorsthat inf luenced his lifeand writing was a men-tal illness called disso-ciative disorder. The con-dition, which was diag-nosed about a decade ago, caused Durit
