Guitarist Anthony Purdy champions the sounds of apast era and wants others to share the pleasure.

Anthony performs as Anth Purdy’s Swing Jazz Guitarand his appearance raises eyebrows. An immaculatesuit, two-tone shoes and a trilby are not de rigueur,it seems, in the pubs & clubs of North East England, but are certainly welcomed in Rothesay! These erasproduced some of the greatest music ever writtenby some of the best musicians and Anth Purdy’sSwing Jazz Guitar captures the sounds and styles tobring this wonderful music back to life. A unique actwith its roots in the early guitar greats. You can seeAnthony at Gambas Bar on Friday and at theGlenburn Hotel on Saturday & Sunday.

Mike began his musical life in the late 1950splaying his father’s drum kit. By age 14 he wasplaying in local dance bands and in 1969 Mikedecided to turn professional. Now, he’s backhome again in the Scottish Borders and workingas Scotland’s only (as far as we know) one-manblues band with his guitars, mouth-harps, vocalsand drum-kit - and of course his show-stopping,“mouth percussion”. He is not to be missed atthe Glenburn Hotel bar on Friday, Gambas Baron Saturday and for his final show of the Festivalat the Victoria Hotel on Sunday night.

BROWNFIELD / BYRNE HOT 6 are inspired bythe swing era stylists of the late 1930's and early1940's and perform music by the likes of LouisArmstrong, Bix Beiderbeck, Fats Waller, earlyDuke Ellington and the John Kirby sextet.

The band has now been together since January2012 and after tentative beginnings has nowdeveloped a full band sound which is original

while still being firmly rooted in the jazz tradition.

Liam Byrne (tenor sax) is responsible for most ofthe band’s repertoire and writes all thearrangements, which tend to be re-imaginingsof the classic jazz numbers featuring tightly

harmonized horns and guitar set against therhythm section backdrop.

The rhythm section combination of bassist JimSwinnerton, guitarist Andy Hulme and JackCotterill on drums create a really authentic andinfectious swing feel while the talents ofstandout soloists, Jamie Brownfield (trumpet)

and Tom Kincaid (piano) really energize and liftthe band.

In the event of wet weather, the picnic will beheld in the Pavilion Main Hall. Picnics arewelcome in the hall but please note that alldrinks must be purchased from the Pavilion Bar.

BUTE COMMUNITY SWING BAND are makingtheir debut at the Festival this year. Ken Mathieson brings his fabulous Classic JazzOrchestra to Bute for one night only. Don’t missthis superb band on Friday Night at the Pavilion,in the Main Hall.

Formed in 2004, the Classic Jazz Orchestra is an8-piece professional band based in Edinburghwhose mission is to explore the fabulous variedback-catalogue of jazz in an informative andentertaining way.

Its remit, however, is to re-interpret, not simplyreplicate jazz styles covering the period from theearly 1900’s to about 1980, while still payingrespect to the original source material.

In short, everything from Jelly Roll Morton toCharles Mingus, a stylistic spread that would beunimaginable but for the versatility andprofessionalism of CJO’s members, who areamong the finest soloists and section players inEurope today.

Billy Hunter (trumpet)Phil O’Malley (trombone)Dick Lee (saxophone / clarinet)Allon Beauvoisin (reeds)Martin Foster (reeds)Tom Finlay (piano)Roy Percy (bass)Ken Mathieson (drums/arranger)

Their versatility was recognised in the 2009Scottish Jazz Awards in which CJO won the BestBand Category, and in Jazz Journal InternationalMagazine’s 2011 Critics Poll in which the band’sCD with Alan Barnes of the music of Benny Carterwas nominated for New CD of the Year.

CJO has appeared at major festivals and clubs allover UK presenting programmes dedicated tothe music of a single musician (Morton,Beiderbecke, Bechet, Ellington, Armstrong etc),or a brief history of jazz, or simply a pot-pourridrawn from the full width of the band’srepertoire.

Richard White became interested in jazz clarinet whilststill at school on the Isle of Wight. The usual younghopeful’s mixture of pubs and wine bars followed, including a notable time spent as half of a duo withRothesay’s own Tim Saul and a lucky opportunity to fill

a space for ‘absent friends’ at a re-union of the originalTemperance Seven. Richard has for thirty years‘enjoyed’ the usual up and downs of a jobbingmusician. Most recently he has contributed to BryanFerry’s Jazz Age album and is to be heard on thesoundtrack of the 2013 film of F. Scott Fitzgerald’sGreat Gatsby. From their first appearance in 2011,Richard White’s Fivers have been a Bute Festivalfavourite. Loosely based on the style of Jimmie Noone’s

Apex Club orchestra, the band strenuously resistsmerely copying the Old Masters but it is hoped thatthe true spirit of jazz-mad Chicago - aided by a liberaldash of British rubbish! - is authentically recreated.Paul Maple : giving the important alto saxophone leadCharles Wheatley : guitarDavid O’Brien : double bassNick Ball : percussionRichard White : various clarinets & saxophones

The legendary George Penman Jazzmen ....Their first gig was in Lenzie Town Hall in1959 but the band still plays in the famousKing Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow everySaturday afternoon. When it comes tolongevity, Penman's continue to reign.

RothesayPavilion

Refurbishment of the Rothesay Pavilion

The Pavilion is a much loved building onBute, and is a key venue for the JazzFestival. Everyone would agree, though, that it has seen better days. I’m delighted, then, that Argyll & Bute Council have raisednearly £9 million from a wide variety ofsources (including a generous grant fromthe Heritage Lottery Fund) to refurbish thebuilding.

The funds will allow the provision of a newlift, a ground floor exhibition space, a shop,a new café, a secondary performancespace accessed from McKinley St, a newrooftop meeting room and lettable offices. The whole place will be repaired andspruced up, including the main hall, and the

former caretaker’s house will be made intoa place for artists in residence and beavailable as a holiday let.

When the building is refurbished, itsmanagement will be taken on by theRothesay Pavilion Charity, which willappoint new staff to ensure that thePavilion is actively programmed as a centrefor arts, culture and community activities. Its aim is to attract more tourists to theisland, and to provide greateropportunities for residents.

The building will be closed towards the endof this year, and reopen in mid 2017.

We look forward to hosting the 2018 JazzFestival in the renewed spaces.

2015 Isle of Bute Jazz Festival Official Programme 42

The Isle of Bute Jazz Festival wasfounded in 1988 by Phil and HanneMason. Phil retired from touring withhis band, Phil Mason’s New Orleans AllStars and from chairmanship of theFestival in 2010. Sadly his health wasfailing and we learned of his passing tothe Great Bandstand Above in June of2014, after a long illness.

Here’s a personal tribute from FestivalChairman, Tim Saul:

I first met Phil Mason and his wife Hannein October 2003 shortly after moving toBute from the Isle of Wight. Phil was agreat encouragement to me in my effortsto contribute to the musical scene on Buteand invited me to join his Jazz Friends bandfor their monthly gigs at the Regent Hotel.Annual appearances followed at the Isle ofBute Jazz Festival as the opening act andwere memorable for all the right reasons, not the least attractive being a seeminglyendless supply of lager and lime …

Phil asked me to take on the chairmanshipof the Festival in 2010, after his retirementfrom a busy touring schedule with his NewOrleans All Stars. He subsequently retiredfrom local gigging with his Jazz Friends butdespite poor health always retained thatwicked sense of humour and dry wit whichhad punctuated hundreds of gigs over the

years. When you telephoned him to askhow he was, a likely response would be“Mind your own b_____y business!”

We received the news of Phil’s passingwith great sadness. A great stalwart ofBritish Jazz has gone to the GreatBandstand above. R.I.P. Phil, you will besadly missed.

Phil’s funeral took place in Rothesay, atTrinity Church and it was fitting thatseveral members of his band were able toattend, to perform some tunes tocelebrate Phil’s life and achievements.

Hanne and the family asked me to helpwith a musical tribute at the service and Iwas able to dig out the baritone sax for theoccasion. Thanks to Martin Bennett andChristine Tyrell for their superb vocals,Gentleman Jim McIntosh (banjo), andRoger Myerscough (clarinet), of the NewOrleans All Stars and to Paul McKay (bass)and David Gray (drums), from the Tim SaulQuartet who played at the service.
