Meet the ArtistsCarla BleyOne of the premier composers of the last50-plus years, Carla Bley has written musicfor big bands, choirs, chamber orchestras, and small combos. Bley’s skills have been indemand even outside of jazz, including per-forming and recording with Jack Bruce,Robert Wyatt, and Pink Floyd’s drummerNick Mason. Bley’s father, Emil Borg, achurch organist and piano teacher, first intro-duced her to music when she was three, and she first heard jazz when she was 12.She moved to New York at age 17, workingas a cigarette girl at the jazz club Birdland, where she met pianist Paul Bley, whom shemarried in 1957. She began writing compo-sitions, which Paul Bley and a number ofother musicians began to record.

In 1964, with her second husband, trum-peter Michael Mantler, she formed the JazzComposer’s Orchestra and subsequentlyfounded the Jazz Composer’s OrchestraAssociation, an independent record labelfocusing on more avant-garde forms ofjazz. Bley’s compositions and arrange-ments reached wider audiences throughsuch recordings as Charlie Haden’s TheLiberation Music Orchestra.

In 1972 Bley and Mantler started a newrecord label, Watt. She also began experi-menting outside of jazz, joining JackBruce’s band in 1975, writing all the com-positions for and performing on NickMason’s 1981 album Nick Mason’sFictitious Sports, and recording the sound-track to the 1985 film Mortelle Randonnée.In 1997 a live production of Escalator overthe Hill was staged in Germany, then touredEurope the following year. Bley is a recipi-ent of a Guggenheim Fellowship for musiccomposition (1972) and the German JazzTrophy “A Life for Jazz” (2009). Bley hastoured all over the world and continues toperform and record frequently, both withher own big band and a number of smaller

ensembles, including her longtime partner,Steve Swallow.

George ColemanThe spectrum of George Coleman’s musicalcareer extends from playing blues in theBeale Street clubs of Memphis to blowingmodern jazz on the New York stages. He isknown for a deeply soulful tone in his per-formances and throughout the fabric of hisown compositions. He grew up inMemphis. Intrigued by the music of CharlieParker, Coleman taught himself to play thealto saxophone. In 1952, at age 17, he gothis first big break with blues guitarist (andNEA National Heritage Fellow) B.B. King, touring and recording with him for severalyears. Coleman switched to tenor sax whenKing needed a tenor man in his band.

In 1956 Coleman moved to Chicago andjoined Walter Perkins’ group MJT+3. In1958 he attracted the attention of drummerMax Roach and relocated to New York Cityto play in his band. In 1959 he joined trom-bonist Slide Hampton’s octet, touringEurope for the first time and developing hiscomposing and arranging skills. In 1963Coleman became a part of Miles Davis’groundbreaking quintet that included HerbieHancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams.

After leaving Davis’ group in 1964,Coleman freelanced as a composer andarranger for various musicians, such asChet Baker, Lee Morgan, Elvin Jones, andCedar Walton. He then began to focus onhis own groups, also adding the sopranosaxophone to his instrument repertoire.Coleman continues to perform, usuallywith his son George, Jr. on drums. Cole -man is also a jazz educator, teaching atMannes College The New School forMusic, Long Island University, and NewYork University, and conducting masterclasses at universities nationwide. In 1997he received the Jazz Foundation ofAmerica’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2012, he was inducted into theMemphis Music Hall of Fame.

Charles LloydCharles Lloyd’s fierce improvisational skillsand interest in fusing jazz with non-Westernmusical styles established him as one ofthe key figures in the expansion and fur-thering of the art form. Lloyd began playingsaxophone at age nine, mentored by pianistPhineas Newborn. His interest in jazz wascultivated by listening to jazz radio broad-casts and as a teenager, he immersed him-self in the local Memphis music scene, playing with George Coleman, BookerLittle, Harold Mabern, and Frank Strozier, and as a sideman for Johnny Ace, Bobby“Blue” Bland, Howlin’ Wolf, and B.B. King.

In 1956 Lloyd moved to Los Angeles andgraduated from the University of SouthernCalifornia. During this period Lloyd playedin Gerald Wilson’s big band while also play-ing in local clubs with some of the mainWest Coast jazz musicians Lloyd joinedChico Hamilton’s band in 1960 as theensemble’s music director and main com-poser. In 1964 Lloyd left Hamilton’s groupto join alto saxophonist CannonballAdderley, while also securing a deal atColumbia to record his own work. By 1965he formed his own quartet, featuring KeithJarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and CecilMcBee. Their recording Forest Flower:Live at Monterey became one of the firstjazz recordings to sell a million copies.

In 1969, at the peak of his career, Lloyddisbanded the quartet and moved back toBig Sur, California, to focus on his inner lifeand spiritual quest. From 1981–88, Lloydperformed intermittently, until he resumedtouring activities and began recording withthe ECM label in 1989. He continues toexperiment with his music in terms ofinstruments, musical sources, and collabo-rations. Awards bestowed on the artistinclude a “Brass Note” on Beale Street inMemphis in 2012, the Miles Davis Awardfrom the Festival International de Jazz deMontreal, Canada, in 2013, and the AlfaJazz Fest International Music Award in2014.

Joe SegalSince 1947, Joe Segal has been pursuinghis great love: presenting jazz musicians inperformance in Chicago, Illinois. He carriesthe distinction of being the city’s longest-tenured jazz presenter, in addition of beingone of the founders of one of Chicago’spreeminent jazz organizations, the JazzInstitute of Chicago, which promotesChicago’s place in jazz history and endeav-ors to create new audiences for the music.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Segal listened tojazz on the radio, which introduced him tothe likes of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, and Sidney Bechet. His first live jazz concertexperiences were big band performances atthe city’s Earl Theater. After high school,Segal was drafted into the Air Force and, while stationed in Champaign, Illinois, hefrequently hopped on the train to Chicago tocatch live jazz on Randolph Street. Afterleaving the military, Segal relocated toChicago to attend Roosevelt University onthe GI Bill. At Roosevelt, Segal joined theuniversity’s jazz club in 1947—soon runningafternoon live jazz sessions that featuredmusicians he had met working at commer-cial jazz venues. The popularity of Segal’sevents grew quickly, and big band musi-cians would perform solo on their off-nights,along with other local and visiting artistsincluding the legendary Charlie Parker,Lester Young, and Sonny Rollins.

In 1957, the sessions at Roosevelt ended, and shortly thereafter Segal began show-casing music at other venues. In the early1970s Segal opened a spot on Rush Street, the first official Jazz Showcase (its currentresidence is inside the Landmark DearbornStation). Engagements usually encom-passed five evening performances and aspecial Sunday matinee for kids, aShowcase tradition that continues to thisday. For many musicians, the JazzShowcase served as a launch pad for theirindividual careers. In 2013 Segal receivedan honorary doctorate from his alma mater,Roosevelt University.

National Endowment for the Arts and JazzThe National Endowment for the Arts was established by Congress in 1965 as an inde-pendent agency of the federal government. To date, the NEA has awarded more than $5 billion to strengthen the creative capacity of our communities by providing allAmericans with diverse opportunities for arts participation. The NEA extends its workthrough partnerships with state arts agencies, local leaders, other federal agencies, andthe philanthropic sector.

From its earliest days, the National Endowment for the Arts has funded countless jazzorganizations across the country, making significant investments in support of jazz con-certs, festivals, education activities, and other programs.

Initiated in 1982, the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship is the nation’s highest honor given tothose who have devoted their lives and careers to jazz, an art form uniquely rooted inAmerican history and culture. Described by The New York Times as a “rare public acco-lade for jazz”, the recipients represent a wide variety of musical distinction, from singersand percussionists, to vibraphonists and saxophonists—all of whom have shaped andadvanced the jazz art form through their lifelong commitment. In 2004 the NEA inaugu-rated the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship for Jazz Advocacy, given to an indi-vidual who has made major contributions to the appreciation, knowledge, and advance-ment of the American jazz art form.

The NEA recognizes up to four individuals a year, each receiving a one-time fellowshipaward of $25,000, and being honored at a public awards ceremony and concert.Fellowships are awarded to living individuals on the basis of nominations from the public. The NEA encourages nominations of a broad range of men and women who have beensignificant to the field of jazz, through vocal and instrumental performance, creative lead-ership, and education.

The NEA has numerous resources as part of the NEA Jazz Masters program, including:

• Bios and photos of NEA Jazz Masters

• Video interviews with the artists

• Video from past NEA Jazz Masters Awards Concerts

• Podcasts with NEA Jazz Masters and other jazz musicians and writers

• Jazz Moments—1-2 minute audio clips consisting of musical excerpts and short interviews with NEA Jazz Masters and other artists about the Masters’ music and influence on the field.

They will collaborate forthe first time in a centennial celebration of theindelible influence of blues giant Muddy Waters(1915–1983), who changed the genre forever andpermanently impacted rock ‘n roll. Over the spanof their prolific recording careers—a combined 80years—each has garnered the highest honors andawards. Michael Feinstein’s Blue Eyed Saloon SongsMay 13 at 7pm / May 14 at 7pm & 9pmSongs like “One For My Baby” and “Angel Eyes”have become synonymous with quintessentialcrooner Frank Sinatra, who possessed an incom-parable personalization of American popular song.Sinatra coined the phrase “Saloon Songs,” whichreferred to those songs of unrequited love, sad-ness, and heartbreak. Jazz and Popular Song seriesdirector Michael Feinstein curates and performsclassics meant to be experienced, “with a cigarettein one hand and a drink in the other,” along withvocalists Jane Monheit, Denzal Sinclaire, KateDavis, and Madelyn Baillio. Like his idols BillieHoliday and Mabel Mercer, Sinatra is among achoice few legendary vocalists whose storytellingis conveyed through song with vulnerability, ten-derness, and authenticity.
