ThenewMULTIBEAMLEDheadlampsgoanimportantstepfurther.Theyuseaveryfastresponding highresolutionprecisionLEDlightmoduleasalightsource,whichfeatures24individualhighperformanceLED chips.Eachcanbecontrolledelectronicallyandindependentlyoftheothers.Thisallowsthelightdistributionfrom therightandleftheadlampstobecontrolledseparatelyandadaptedhighlydynamicallytothetrafficconditionswith ahighlevelofprecision.Thismakesitilluminateindividualareasoftheroadinhighlytargetedfashion.Combining thelightsourcewiththeprovenmechanicalLEDtechnology,meanstheheadlampcontroltechnologynotonly increasestheprecisionoftoday'slightsourcesandsetsagapwithaminimalwidthforthemainbeam,butitalso generatesanewdimensioninlightoutputinpartialhighbeamoperation.Comparedwiththesystemsonthe markettoday,theMULTIBEAMLEDheadlampshaveupto2.5timesthepartialhighbeamlightoutput.This increaseismadepossiblebythesophisticatedcontrolelectronicsinconjunctionwiththenewmatrixlightsource oftheprecisionLEDmodule. Acameraonthewindscreensuppliesthesystemwiththeinformationitneedsabouttheconstantlychanging trafficsituationandisalsousedbyotherassistancefunctions.Fourcontrolunitspervehiclecalculatetheideal lightpattern100timespersecondandactivateall24highperformanceLEDsinlampmoduleindividually. TheadditionallightoutputofthetechnologyintheMULTIBEAMLEDheadlampsisnotonlyusedtoincreasethe performanceinpartialhighbeamoperation,butalsoforhighbeamoperation.Eventhoughthelatterisactivated significantlylessduetotrafficdensity,therangeofthehighbeamswasincreasedbyabout20%toabout485m. Theactivelightfunctionilluminatesbendsbeforetheyareentered Inadditiontothepowerfulhighresolutionprecisionmainbeammodule,eachMULTIBEAMLEDheadlamp containsafurthermoduleforthelowbeamheadlampwhichisequippedwithfourLEDs.Itcanbeswivelled outwardadditionallybyasmuchastwelvedegreestoprovideananticipatorycamerabasedactivelightfunction apossibilityneverrealisedbefore.Camerabased,themoduleswivelstowardthebendbeforethedriverhaseven turnedthewheel,thusprovidingoptimumilluminationofthebendearlyon.Accordingtothesituationitalso swivelsbacktothestraightaheadpositionbeforethebendends.Thisallowsthedrivertoidentifydangersearlier whenenteringandexitingbends.Theanticipatorycontrolallowsanadditionalrangeofbetween30and60m dependingonthetrafficsituation. Nodarkzoneonroundabouts Thenewandtodateuniquelightfunctionforroundaboutsisnavigationbased.Itactivatesthecorneringlight functiontotheleftandrightbeforeenteringtheroundabouttoensuremaximumvisibilityatanearlystage. Advantage:LED TheLEDtechnologyoffersmanyadvantages:thelightfromtheverybrightLEDheadlampsisclosertodaylightand thereforeperfectlyattunedtothehumaneye.Studieshaveshownthatthecloserthecolourofartificiallightisto daylight,thelessthestrainontheeyes.Withacolourtemperatureof5500kelvin,LEDlightisclosertodaylight (6500K)thanxenonlight(4200K).ThepowerfulsinglechipLEDdiodesoftheMULTIBEAMLEDheadlampsand
  3. 3. theirhighlumen/wattoutputalsocontributeincreasedefficiencyandwithanaverageusefullifeofabout10,000 hourswillalsolastfivetimeslongerthanaxenonlamp. 2010intheCLS:abreakthroughinLEDtechnology 2010sawabreakthroughinLEDtechnology.WiththelaunchoftheCLS,MercedesBenzbecamethefirst automotivemanufacturertoofferaproductionmodelfeaturingdynamicallLEDhighperformanceheadlamps incorporatingalltheadaptivelightfunctionsofxenonsystems:countrymode,motorwaymode,foglight,activelight functionandcorneringlightfunction.ThelightingspecialistsatMercedesBenzwerealsoabletocombinethis LEDtechnologywiththeinnovativeAdaptiveHighbeamAssistsystemforthefirsttime,leadingtoacompletelynew levelofsafetyatnight. EClass:LEDlowbeamheadlampsasstandard Inthespringof2013thenewEClasssetstandardsintermsoflightfeatures:asstandarditboastsboth lowbeamheadlampsanddaytimedrivinglampswhichmakeuseofLEDtechnology.Allinall,thehighefficiency lowbeamsofbothheadlampstogetherconsumejust34wattsandarethusmuchmoreefficientthanhalogen (120watts)andxenonlamps(84watts,allfigurespervehicle).Thismeansthatitispossibletosaveupto0.05 litresoffuelper100kilometres,or2.1gramsofCO2perkilometre,comparedwithavehiclewithhalogen lowbeamheadlamps.LEDhighperformanceheadlampsareavailableasanoptionforthefirsttimeinthisclass. SClass:spellingtheendforconventionallightbulbs ThenextstepfollowedwiththenewSClass.MercedesBenzcontinuedtoexpanditspioneeringroleinthe automotivelightingsector:forthefirsttimethenewSClassisfittedexclusivelywithLEDheadlampsandnolonger usesconventionallightbulbsalmost500LEDsarenowresponsibleforilluminatingtheroad,thevehicle,the interiorandtheluggagecompartment.New,powerfulsinglechipLEDsandanewlydevelopedprojectionmodule intheheadlamp,wherelightraysarediverted,reflectedandprojectedoutwards,makeasignificantcontributionto theincreasedefficiency. NewoptionalfunctionsexpandtheperformancespectrumoftheLEDheadlampsoftheSClassandnowalsoof theEandCClass.AdaptiveHighbeamAssistPlusallowsthehighbeamheadlampstobekeptonpermanently whiledrivingbymaskingoutanyotherroadusersdetectedinthebeams'coneoflight.Ifthecamerabased systemdetectsanoncomingvehicleoravehicleinfront,amechanismintheheadlampmodulemasksthe portionoftheLEDheadlamp'sconeoflightwherethereareothervehicles,topreventtheirdriversfrombeing dazzled.Consequently,thedrivercanleavethehighbeamheadlampsonatalltimesandusetheirfullrange withoutirritatingorevenendangeringotherroadusers.Thereisnoneedtoswitchthemonandoffmanually, resultinginasignificantincreaseintheoveralldrivingtimewithhighbeam.Possibleglarecausedbyincreased useofthehighbeamsandhighlyreflectivesignsatthesideoftheroadarealsodetectedandpreventedby dimmingtheheadlampsaccordingly. Consideratetoothers:taillightswithautomaticintensitycontrol MercedesBenzvehiclesareconsideratetootherroadusersalsothankstothesocalledmultilevelfunctionalityof thetaillamps,withwhichanotherworldfirstwasachievedintheEClassandnowalsointheSandCClass.
  4. 4. Withthis,thebrakelightsandindicatorsareoperatedwithvaryinglightintensity,dependingonthedrivingsituation andambientlighting(day/night). IftheMercedesdriverpressesthebrakepedalwhilestoppedattrafficlightsatnight,forinstance,thebrightnessof thebrakelightswillbeautomaticallydimmedtoavoiddazzlinganyonebehind.Thelightdistributionisbroadened toensurethelightsdonotbecometoodimandthattheycontinuetofulfilalllegalrequirements,ofcourse.
