Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation. While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer.Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants devel-op fully as students, athletes and citizens. Athletics participation at many of the 444 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and athletics. That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities. In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics to promote academic success. This is evidenced by MU’s overall 3.17 GPA among student-athletes and 182 MAC All-Academic honorees in 2013-14While Division III athletics programs promote participation, they don’t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the D-III level.Misericordia is one of just two schools in the Middle Atlantic Conference to offer all 23 sports sponsored by the MAC.MU has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 45 conference championships and sent 23 teams to the NCAA Championships, including the women’s soccer team advancing to the NCAA Final Four in 2012.In addition, several individuals have put Misericordia on the national map: Ashlee Ward, Track & Field: NCAA Indoor & Outdoor high jump champion. Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA champion. Willie Chandler, basketball: Second-leading scorer in Division III history. Heather Dougherty, swimming: NCAA All-American. Sam Helmstetter, women’s soccer: First-team All-American. Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led Division III in blocks per game. Amy Bower, cross country: All-American. Frank Redmond, track & field: All-American. Kim Daniel, field hockey: Eighth in Division III career assists. Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III single-game hits record.Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educa-tional Catholic institution located in northeastern Pennsylvania.Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.MU offers 34 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Scienc-es; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences.Dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality, these values are found throughout the Uni-versity, from programs of study to service projects. The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With a total enrollment of 3,111 students, including 1,982 full-time, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. An average class size of 19 ensures personalized attention and a 12.6:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another.Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban at-mosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from New York City and Philadelphia.

JIM RICARDOHead Coach

Jim Ricardo is in his 13th season as head men’s lacrosse coach at Misericordia University.

Ricardo led the Cougars to an 10-7 record in 2013, including the first Freedom Conference Championship appearance.

Before making the transition to the MAC in 2009, Ricardo led the Cougars to the Pennsylvannia Athletic Conference playoffs three times in his first six seasons.

A graduate of Cortland State University, he previously served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan College.

During his collegiate playing career, he helped Cortland to a berth in the NCAA Championships.

Prior to that, he was a member of two national championship teams at Herkimer Community College where the team set a national record with 59 consecutive wins.

Ricardo coached the United States U19 team to the silver medal at the 2010 FIL Festival in Manchester, England.

In addition to his coaching duties, Ricardo serves as the athletics equipment manager at Misericordia.

JOE LODATOGraduate Assistant

Joe Lodato is in his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Misericordia University men’s lacrosse program.

A 2011 alumnus of MU, Lodato spent two seasons as the assistant boy’s lacrosse coach at Holmdel High School in

Holmdel, N.J. He served as the defensive coordinator and was in charge of faceoffs.

While at Holmdel, he coached 10 all-division players and four All-Shore Conference all-stars. His group ended both of his seasons in the top five of the Shore Conference.

He also founded a high school travel program in 2011, serving as director and head coach of Jersey Shore Select Lacrosse. The program competed in highly competitve summer tournaments scheduled in the tri-state area.

In addition, he works camps, clinics and has given individual training session through Jersey Shore Select, Hoop-Lax, Mid-New Jersey Lacrosse, All Shore Lacrosse and Holmdel Youth Activities Association.

The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-ath-letes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.

The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts.

Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams.

The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/dance studio.

The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses.

Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was con-structed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs.

The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal.

The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since 1992.

Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University.

Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region.

The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation.

Honoring the Robert Tambur family, Tambur Field was chris-tened in 2013 as the new home for the MU baseball team.

McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan ‘46, opened in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams.

In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was construct-ed in 2012 and provides meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams.

The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their contributions to the MU community.

2015 season PreviewAfter reaching the Freedom Conference championship game in 2013, the Misericordia University men’s lacrosse team missed the post-season by the slimmest of margins a year ago. Despite finishing in a three-way tie for third place during the regular season, the tiebreaking criteria went against the Cougars and they were left out of the playoff picture. With 16 lettermen returning, including seven starters, the Cougars hope to avoid the pain of missing the post-season again. “Last season was frustrating,” said Misericordia Head Coach Jim Ricardo. “We’ve learned a lot from that experience and our up-perclassmen have worked hard to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.” The returnees have passed along their determination to the 22 newcomers that help comprise the largest roster in program history. “The veterans aren’t taking any-thing for granted,” said Ricardo. “They are battling every day and the young guys are paying atten-tion. They are eager to learn and they all are willing to do whatever it takes to be successful.” For the Cougars, the formula for success will start with their defensive unit. Eric Dittmeier, a second-team All-Freedom selection, returns along with senior goalkeeper Pat Johnson, a 2013 All-Freedom honoree who owns nearly every school goalkeeping record. Steve Dallicardillo is a returning starter and will likely be joined in the starting line-up by transfer Alec Kellish.Johnson and Josh Shanker continue to battle for the starting job in net while Ian Schurr and Ryan Sanderson provide quality depth.

David Pettine, John Tierney, Riley Smith and Michael Farinaro are challenging for time on the defensive unit while Jack Ryan, Collin LaWall and Kevin Forsyth pro-vide immediate depth. Pat Newins, Andrew Phillips and Trevor Riefberg are fighting for time at long stick midfielder. Ryan Cannon makes the transition from offense and will anchor the defensive midfield along with Steve Monka

and Ryan Osadchy. John Boylan and Mark Hojna are also in the mix. In the midfield, Andrew Reynolds provides experience along with Trevor Bodnar. Reynolds was the team MVP and second-team All-Freedom a year ago after scoring 40 goals, the second-highest single-season total in school history. In addition, newcomers Brandon Winslow, Philip Fraher, Kyle Reese, Michael Iglio, Jake Kocovsky and Kevin Loesch are competing for spots on the top two lines in the midfield. “Andrew and Trevor are proven performers,” said Ricardo. “We

have a tremendous amount of speed and athleticism among the newcomers. We expect the midfielders to open up the field and create opportunities for the attack.” Lane Kocovsky and Patrick Kellish are returning starters at attack while Chris Fleming, Brady Jordan and Philip Caltagrione are battling for the third spot. Ryan Edson, Nick Kenna and James Pedersen provide added depth. “We have our biggest team ever which translates to the most depth we’ve ever had,” said Ricardo. “Guys are bat-tling everyday and pushing each other for playing time.”
