ACADEMY BUMBLEBEESClass: 3A Division IRegion: 3District: 10School Colors: Green & GoldPlayoff Appearances: 20State Championships: NoneHead Coach: Mike NicholsYears in Coaching: 19Years at Academy: 6 (Head Coach)Coaching Record at Academy: 21-32Assistant Coaches: Paul Williams, Chris Randolph, Thomas Pickerill, Jed Figg, Gus Beuerhausen, Tim Kelso, Jeff Houston, Quincy Roberts Five Year Trend2014 – 7-5, Area2013 – 4-6, No Playoffs2012 – 2-8, No Playoffs2011 – 5-6, Bi-District2010 – 3-7, No Playoffs

2014 ReviewThere was a good amount of experience back as Academy returned 11 starters, five on offense and six on defense, but the program had not been to the postseason since 2011. Following a season opening loss to Marlin, the Academy defense stepped up in a shutout win over rival Rogers. After a loss to Lexington, the defense came up big against Salado as the Bumblebees hung on for a seven point win. Academy closed out the non-district schedule with a win over Goldthwaite. Academy got off to a rough start in district play turning the ball over seven times in a loss to Troy. The Bumblebees rebounded the following week against Florence. Trailing 17-14 at the half, the defense came alive and forced a turnover allowing the Academy offense capitalize and drive 65 yards, capped off by a 19-yard touchdown run by Cody Martinez to give the Bumblebees the lead for good. The following week against No. 3 Rockdale, Academy pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season. Philip Redwine had a big first half to give the Bumblebees a 28-15 lead at intermission. In the second half, Academy ran the football effectively and was able to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to hold off the Tigers and secure the upset win. Following its biggest win of the season, Academy defeated Lago Vista and was in prime position to return to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. Even though they lost the final regular season game against Cameron Yoe, Lago Vista’s win over Troy secured the third spot out of the district for Academy. The Bumblebees faced McGregor in their playoff opener in a game that went down to the wire. Taking over on their own 20 yard line with 4:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Academy chewed up the clock driving down to the McGregor 1 yard line with four seconds left. Camron Costa nailed a 17-yard field goal as time expired to give the Bumblebees the playoff win. In the area round, Academy got out to a 14-0 lead but wasn’t able to score any more points as its season came to an end against East Chambers.

2015 OutlookAcademy is looking to follow a season where it surprised many by making the playoffs in arguably the toughest district in 3A Division I. The Bumblebees won’t have much experience back as few starters return. Two-way starter Cody Martinez is back for his senior season and will be leaned on heavily on offense. Martinez took some snaps at quarterback when Academy went to a wildcat offense last season. Head coach Mike Nichols admits the team will have to grow up fast in order for them to be successful this season. There is a lot of inexperience and a lack of depth at the varsity level. With Cameron Yoe and Rockdale expected to be just as strong this season, the district will continue to be arguably the best in 3A Division I.

2014 ReviewWith only seven seniors, a relatively young football team and one of the toughest districts in the state, Axtell was able to show improvement throughout the entire season. After a season opening loss to Riesel, the Longhorns won their next two games against Bruceville-Eddy and Frost. Following two straight wins, Axtell dropped its last two non-district games to Tolar and Holland. Both were playoff participants. The Longhorns opened up district play against Bosqueville and gave the Bulldogs everything they could handle. Trailing 7-6, Tanner Fields picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown giving Axtell a 13-7 lead. But the Longhorns were unable to hold on to the lead as Bosqueville’s Drew Hayes scored from a yard out with 21 seconds left in the game. Following the heartbreaking loss in the final minute, Axtell dropped its next district game to Crawford. The Longhorns rebounded by beating Itasca but saw their playoff hopes end the following week with a loss to Mart. Despite not being in the playoff hunt, Axtell sent its seniors out in style against Valley Mills in the final game of the season. Colton Fields made a 38-yard game winning field goal as time expired giving Axtell its second district win to end the season. Returning StartersSR RB/DB TJ Sanchez 5’10, 165SR RB/DB Bobby Hanson 5’8, 140JR QB/DB Colton Fields 5’11, 150SR QB/DB Josh Pina 5’10, 150SR WR/DB Hunter Hurst 6’0, 165JR RB/DB Santos Ramirez 5’10, 150SR RB/LB Will Busby 5’6, 140SR OL/DL Jason Marroquin 6’0, 220JR OL/DL Chase White 6’0, 225SR OL/DL Shane Burns 6’0, 240SR DL/OL Jonny Rodriguez 6’0, 200SR LB/RB Tanner Fleet 5’10, 185SR LB/RB Mike Jones 5’10, 170JR LB/RB Ethan Cantrell 6’0, 195SR DL/OL Devyn Hebbe 6’0, 185SR DL/OL Tyler Farley 5’11, 205Key NewcomersJR OL/DL Erick Marton 6’0, 225JR OL/DL Robert Lee 6’1, 190SO RB/LB Brock Wilson 5’10, 165Offense: Triple Option Flexbone Defense: 4-3

2015 OutlookAfter only having seven seniors on the team last season, Axtell will have a plethora of experience back. On offense, head coach Mike Cadell expects the Longhorns to be strong on the offensive line which bodes well for the triple option flexbone offense. Axtell will need to find a quarterback to replace Tanner Fields. On defense, the linebacking corps will be the strength. Key players were lost in the secondary and Cadell believes they’ll need to show improvement in order to be successful. With playmakers lost on all the teams that finished above Axtell in the district standings combined with an additional playoff spot added for 2A schools this season and an experienced group back, Axtell has its sights set on a return to the postseason.

2014 ReviewBob Shipley was brought in to replace Rodney Southern who left after seven seasons to take the head coaching job at Huntsville. He began putting his imprint on the Belton program installing an up-tempo no huddle offense during the spring and preseason practices. The new offense was on display against University in the season opener as Belton ran 54 plays in the first half propelling the Tigers to a dominating shut out win. Heading into its final district game against Harker Heights, Belton would clinch a playoff spot with a win. Leading 38-27, Belton got a key fourth down stop in Harker Heights territory. The Tigers capitalized on the great field position when Shane Stafford threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Deandra Marshall to extend the lead. But Harker Heights got within five points late in the fourth quarter and had a chance to win the game. The Tigers were able to stop the Knights on Hunter Garrett’s interception and clinch a playoff spot. Back in the playoffs for the first time since 2011, Belton blitzed Garland at Baylor’s McLane Stadium in the bi-district round. Stafford threw for 305 yards in the first half and four touchdowns as the Tigers won a playoff game for the first time since 2009.

Key LossesTevin Jones – UMHB; Haygen Tibbetts – Texas Lutheran; Kavan Johnson – Blinn; Matt Chapman – East Central University; Shane Stafford – Midland College (Baseball)Returning StartersSR WR Deandra Marshall 6’1, 182 – 12 rec, 138 yds, 4 TDSR OL Zack Shackelford 6’4, 305SR OL Jacob Dumas 5’11, 245JR OL Javon Chambers 5’10, 315JR RB Davion Peoples 6’1, 192 – 407 yds rushing, 7 TDSR DB Carlton Shanks 5’10, 180 – 39 tkls, 2 INTSR DB Collin Mask 5’11, 181 – 47 tklsSR LB Chris Jones 6’0, 196 – 105 tklsSR DL Cody Garrett 6’0, 241 – 45 tkls, 6 TFLSR DL Braden Martinez 6’1, 269SR DL Kofi McDonald 6’1, 220 – 40 tklsKey ReturneesJR DL Reagan Chapman 6’2, 208 – 23 tklsSR WR Olajuwan Taylor 6’0, 185 – 117 yds rushing, 2 TDSR FB Joseph Warehime 5’9, 220JR DB Hunter Garrett 6’0, 180 – 34 tklsKey NewcomersJR QB Peyton Mansell 6’2, 192SO DB Garrison Vaughn 6’1, 180JR LB John Harvey 5’10, 193JR DL David Fisher 6’3, 233JR WR Weston Lucas 6’1, 185Offense: Spread Defense: 4-3

2015 OutlookBob Shipley will head into his second season in charge of the Belton football program that looks to get tougher following a season that saw the Tigers win their first playoff game since 2009. The motto “Tiger Tough” was adopted for the offseason. Five starters return on offense that features three offensive linemen, led by Zach Shackelford who was first team all-district last season and a Division I recruit. That’ll help returning running back Davion Peoples, who was a standout in the Belton spring game with 157 yards rushing. The Tigers will have to replace two-year starting quarterback Shane Stafford who is off to Midland College to play baseball. Competing for the spot are juniors Peyton Mansell and John Taggert. Mansell went undefeated as a junior varsity starting quarterback. On defense six starters return. Three of the returners are on the defensive line as Belton looks to be solid in the trenches. There’s also depth in the secondary and at the running back positions. Special teams is a bit of a concern as Belton will feature a new punter and kicker this season.

2014 ReviewDespite being placed in a tough district, Bosqueville continued its tradition of making the playoffs. The Bulldogs have gone to the postseason every year since 2008. Bosqueville opened the season winning its first two games before losing a close game to Tolar. The following week against Chilton, Jesse Williams led the way with 202 yards passing and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half for the decisive win. To close out district play, Bosqueville’s Greyson Gonzalez led the way against Chilton with four total touchdowns. He had two receiving, one rushing and one punt return in the Bulldogs’ 21 point win. Bosqueville started off district play strong with wins over Axtell, Itasca and Valley Mills. But injuries and the schedule caught up to the Bulldogs. Early in the year, they lost lineman Michael Stickley, a 2013 first team all-district player. Dynamic playmaker Gonzalez was lost early in district play as Bosqueville closed out the regular season with losses to Crawford and Mart. Back in the playoffs for the seventh straight season, the Bulldogs drew Tolar, a team they lost a close game to in the regular season. However the rematch would not be as close as Bosqueville’s season came to an end in the bi-district round. 2015 OutlookWith the hopes of continuing its tradition of making the postseason, Bosqueville will have key positions to fill heading into the season. Quarterback Jesse Williams, leading receiver Drew Hays and playmaker Greyson Gonzalez are all lost to graduation. Look for Bosqueville to turn to Adrian Mathis who is coming off a solid sophomore season to be one of its biggest playmakers. Younger players will be expected to step-up and continue the winning tradition Clint Zander has established. The district may not be as top heavy this year as other schools have also lost key players to graduation. With four playoff spots up for grabs, a change in the rules this year for 2A, expect Bosqueville to be in the mix to make it to the post season for the eighth straight season.

2014 ReviewJ.B. Chaney was hired to replace former head coach Chris Lancaster in June. He was previously Holland’s offensive coordinator. Chaney is close to home as he was on Lorena’s 1987 state championship team. Taking over in the summer forced Chaney to play catchup in getting to know his team. Despite installing a new system, the Eagles came together quickly and opened the season with a win over Thrall. Following two straight losses, Bruceville-Eddy beat rival Moody for the first time since 2009. The Eagles closed out non-district play with a win over Hamilton and an overall winning record. District play was a struggle for Bruceville-Eddy. The Eagles were 0-2 in district heading into their game against Clifton and got off to a good start. Quarterback Robert Alvarez found Nathan Martinez for two first half scores allowing Bruceville-Eddy to get out to a 15-12 lead. But the lead wouldn’t hold in the second half as Clifton scored 35 unanswered points to send the Eagles to another district loss. Bruceville-Eddy ended the season with a winless district record.

2015 OutlookJ.B. Chaney is looking for more improvement in his second year in charge of the program. Having a full offseason with his team will be beneficial heading into preseason practices. Quarterback Robert Alvarez returns to run the spread offense and should improve heading into his second year running Chaney’s offense. Travis Cunningham will move from receiver to running back as the Eagles hope to improve their running game. Chaney believes his offensive and defensive lines will be the strength of the team. The defense will need to improve on stopping the run which contributed to the increase in points given up once district play started. The non-district schedule should allow Bruceville-Eddy to gain confidence and grow since it only features one team that made the postseason in 2014. The district should be competitive as the Eagles are looking to be in the hunt to end a playoff drought that dates back to 1985.

2014 ReviewAfter losing 24 lettermen and 14 starters from a team coming off its second straight state title, it was supposed to be a rebuilding year in Cameron. Early in the season, that looked like the case as the Yoemen got off to a slow start by losing four of their first six games, including the bell game to rival Rockdale. Down one point at the half, Cameron allowed 20 third quarter points and trailed 34-12 early in the fourth quarter. The Yoemen mounted a comeback scoring the next 15 points. Down seven with 45 seconds left, Cameron recovered the onside kick but was unable to score. Coming off the loss to its rival, Cameron began to heat up against Troy the following week. Reid Nickerson threw four touchdown passes in a 39 point win. The Yoemen won the remaining games on their schedule in the regular season and beat Glen Rose to open the playoffs. In the area round, Cameron was down three to unbeaten Teague with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Yoemen took the lead on a 34-yard touchdown run by Traion Smith. Aaron Sims then caught his third touchdown of the game to close out the win. Cameron easily dispatched East Chambers and met rival Rockdale in the state quarterfinals. Leading 20-12 at the half, the Yoemen jumped on the Tigers scoring twice in the first 1:36 of the third quarter. Sims caught a 58-yard pass that setup Nickerson for a 1-yard touchdown. On the ensuing Rockdale possession, Sims had a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown. After beating their rival in a rematch from the regular season, Cameron scored 70 points in back-to-back games and cruised to a third straight state championship. 2015 OutlookIt’s scary to suggest heading into the season Cameron Yoe may be in better shape to win a state championship than it was last season. Even scarier, it would be their fourth straight. If experience and returning talent is the gauge, another state title is within their grasp. The Yoemen return 16 starters, eight on offense and eight on defense and return 42 lettermen. The key to the offense will be running back Traion Smith who is coming off another stellar season. Four starters return on the offensive line, which will complement Smith who is coming off two straight two thousand yard seasons. Quarterback could be a question mark. Cameron will turn to Jacob Smitherman to run the offense after seeing some game action last season. He’ll have Sicory Smith to throw to who is coming off a one thousand yard season. On defense the Yoemen will have to find someone to replace the leadership of Ryan Cullen. Defensive lineman D’Andre Adams, defensive back Jay’Lon Bryant and linebacker Alex Ibarra will all look to build on solid junior seasons and lead their respective defensive positions. When Cameron travels to rival Rockdale on October 9, it has the potential to be the best 3A regular season matchup in the state.

2014 ReviewWith a group of talented skill position players back, Chilton had another successful season playing three rounds deep into the playoffs. Led by Norvell Alston and Demarcus Simpson, Chilton won its season opener against Milano. But the Pirates hit a rough patch in the schedule by losing their final two non-district contests. In the second of those games against Bosqueville, Chilton only trailed the Bulldogs 14-7 at the half. In the third quarter, the Pirates imploded turning the ball over on their first three possessions which led to 21 Bosqueville points and an eventual 29 point loss. After the bye week, Chilton got back on track with a win against Dallas Gateway. The following week was a defensive slugfest against Hubbard that saw the Pirates leading the Jaguars 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Alston connected with Chris Holder for a 46-yard touchdown pass that gave Chilton an eight point cushion and allowed them to hold on for the win. The Pirates ran the table in district en route to a district championship. After a bye and a playoff opening win against Timpson that saw the Pirates score 20 unanswered points in the second half, Chilton’s season came to an end in the regional round of the playoffs against unbeaten Iola.

2015 OutlookChilton had a lot of newcomers on the team last season and will need the experience to pay off moving forward. The Pirates will have to replace key playmakers Norvell Alston, Demarcus Simpson and Chris Holder. Jake Giles returns at receiver and Jase Little will get the first crack at replacing Alston at quarterback. Chilton has a lot of experience returning on its offensive and defensive lines which will be the strength of the team this season. The Pirates are hoping to have more success throwing the football this season and be more than just a running team. Despite the lack of proven skill position players returning, Chilton has a proven track record of being a successful program and should compete for another district championship with the potential of making another deep playoff run.

2014 ReviewYouth was on display for China Spring in an up and down season. The young Cougars showed they had the talent to win right away in a come from behind overtime win against Lorena to open the season. Following a loss to Connally, China Spring scored the first 23 points and held on to beat eventual 3A Division I state champion Cameron Yoe. The Cougars would split their next two games to end the non-district schedule. In its second district game, China Spring edged La Vega on Kameron Coe’s game-winning 22-yard field goal as time expired. The Cougars would lose their next two games but were still in contention for a playoff spot. Combined with other results around the district, China Spring needed to beat Gatesville by at least seven points. Leading by three in the fourth quarter, the Cougars put together an 80-yard drive capped off by Dudik’s 2-yard touchdown run to stretch the margin to 10 points and clinch a playoff spot. China Spring’s season would come to an end in the bi-district round against Liberty Hill.

2015 OutlookThere will be plenty of experience back for China Spring this season. Nineteen starters return, nine on offense and 10 on defense for head coach Mark Bell. Kameron Coe returns at quarterback and will have an experienced offensive line in front of him where all five starters return. Also benefiting from the strong offensive line will be returning running back Keaton Dudik who is coming off a season where he rushed for over 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns. Leading receivers Cutter Haigood and Kody Fulp are also back which should allow Bell to open up the offense with all the experience returning. The Cougars should also show improvement on defense with all the experience back. They’ll look to better the 32 points per game they gave up last season. Leading tackler Tristan Czajkoski is back to anchor the unit.

2014 ReviewA major goal was accomplished in the rebuilding process of the Clifton football program in 2014. The Cubs not only made it to the postseason for the first time since 2005, they were able to win a playoff game for the first time in 20 years. The season didn’t get off to the best start as the opener was pushed back a day because of weather. Clifton dropped the opener against West but rebounded the following week against Rosebud-Lott. Tanner Thomas ran for 198 yards and four touchdowns and Jalen Brooks added 206 rushing yards and two touchdowns as the Cubs racked up 500 yards rushing in the lopsided win. After a loss against Crawford, Clifton rebounded against McGregor and beat the Bulldogs for the first time in nine years. However the Cubs lost their next three games, including two district contests against Jarrell and Rogers. With its season on the line, the tide turned in Clifton’s favor in the second half against Bruceville-Eddy. Trailing at the half, the Cubs scored 35 unanswered points in the comeback win. The following week against Marlin, the Cubs held the ball for more than 30 minutes en route to the win and clinched their first playoff berth in a decade. Clifton faced district 9-3A Division II winner Palmer in the bi-district round and wasn’t intimidated. Brooks and Thomas combined for 406 rushing yards and five touchdowns as the Cubs won their first playoff game since 1994.

2015 OutlookChuck Caniford enters his second season as head coach and has already made huge strides in changing the culture at Clifton. The Cubs will look to build on their first playoff appearance in a decade and first playoff win in 20 years. Clifton will continue to look to control the ball with its power gun offense but will have unproven players on the offensive line. “We have a chance to be better than (we were) in 2014 if we can develop some of our young offensive linemen,” said Caniford. Tanner Thomas returns at quarterback and will look to build on a successful junior season. Defensively Caniford expects to have a solid group on the defensive line and in the secondary but will be inexperienced at linebacker. The district schedule will be challenging as three of the five games are on the road, including defending district champion Rogers.

2014 ReviewWith seven starters returning from an explosive offense, expectations were high heading into the season. Connally got off to a hot start by defeating two-time state champion Cameron Yoe. Trailing 35-34 late in the third quarter, quarterback Kristian Brown broke loose for a 22-yard touchdown run. After a successful two-point conversion, the Cadets took a seven point lead and didn’t look back. Piling up over 700 yards of offense, Brown led the way with 190 yards passing and 161 yards rushing in the season opening win. Following a comeback win at former district rival China Spring that saw the Cadets score 33 second half points, the Connally offense stalled in its next game at Gatesville. The Cadets only mustered 20 points in a surprising loss to Gatesville. Connally rebounded from two straight losses against rival La Vega. In a 17 second span in the fourth quarter, James Davis scored a 46-yard touchdown on a jet sweep and Marcus Howard returned an interception for a touchdown as the Cadets held on for an eight point win. Connally opened district play with back-to-back losses to Fairfield and eventual district champion Mexia but rebounded with three straight wins to clinch a playoff spot. Trailing Madisonville 7-0 in the bi-district round, the Cadet offense exploded and scored the next 35 points in the game. Brown threw three touchdowns and ran for one as Connally gained more than 500 yards of total offense in the win. 2015 OutlookIn late January, Mike Rabe left Connally after five seasons to take the head coaching job at Katy ISD’s Mayde Creek. Rabe was 28-26 during his time with the Cadets that included two playoff appearances in the last two seasons. To replace Rabe, Connally ISD brought home one of its own with the hiring of 2002 Connally graduate Shane Anderson. Anderson spent the past two seasons as defensive coordinator at Midway. He also had assistant coaching stints at Tyler Lee and Giddings. Anderson takes over a Connally program that will be replacing a lot of its talent on offense. Only three starters return from an offense that averaged about 39 points per game last season. Defensively four starters return from a group that will look to improve under Anderson’s defensive background. The Cadet defense gave up about 39 points per game last season. Heading into his first season as head coach, Anderson believes depth could be an issue. “A few guys will have to play both ways for us to be at our best,” he said. Most of the coaching staff will also be new as only three coaches return from last year’s staff. Connally will get tested from the start as they open the season facing three-time defending 3A Division I state champion Cameron Yoe.

2014 ReviewThe Bulldawgs started off the season by extracting revenge against A&M Consolidated. Copperas Cove lit up the scoreboard against a Tiger team that came away with an improbable victory at Bulldawg stadium in 2013. Quarterback Manny Harris made sure it wouldn’t happen again as he accounted for 504 yards and five touchdowns in the blowout win. Following the impressive victory, the season took a detour 24 seconds into the Lake Travis game when Harris left with a knee injury as the Bulldawgs lost to the Cavaliers. Harris returned against Killeen as the Bulldawg defense led the way in a district opening win. Copperas Cove won its next two games and faced Midway in a showdown of unbeaten district teams. The Bulldawgs put up 665 yards of total offense but turned the ball over four times losing in a shootout to the Panthers. Copperas Cove finished up the regular season winning its next two games and earned the second spot out of the district in the 6A Division II playoffs. In the bi-district matchup, the Bulldawgs were tied with Rockwall 35-35 early in the third quarter following a 12-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Derris Prater. Rockwall responded in a big way following the tying score and went on to put up 70 points, scoring the most points against Copperas Cove since Jack Welch took over the program in 1994. 2015 OutlookCopperas Cove will have to replace some talented players on both sides of the ball heading into the season. On offense four starters return, a number that includes offensive lineman J.P. Urquidez who is a transfer from DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland and is committed to Baylor. Alex Ramirez is the lone returner from last season’s offensive line. With a new quarterback, expect the Bulldawgs to run the football a lot more this season as they believe they have a strong set of running backs. Junior quarterback Caine Garner will get the first shot at replacing Manny Harris. Defensively three starters return including defensive back Shamad Lomax who is coming off a four interception season. The Bulldawgs will be rebuilding their defensive line that lost three quality players.

2014 ReviewCrawford was replacing most of its starters on offense but welcomed back district co-offensive MVP Braden Murphy. Murphy made his mark as the season kicked off on the road in Tolar. Trailing by six in the first overtime period, Murphy scored a 25-yard touchdown to tie the game and Nate Moenning won the game for the Pirates converting the extra point. The following game against Hico, Crawford honored its 1994 state finalist and 2004 state championship teams while turning in a strong performance against one of the better teams in the state. Murphy returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown as the Pirates got out to a 21-0 lead in the win. The unbeaten Pirates faced unbeaten Mart in a showdown for first place in the district in a matchup of two of the most successful teams in Central Texas that hadn’t played since 1999. Despite racking up 692 yards of total offense against the Panthers, the Pirates were unable to keep up with Mart in an offensive slugfest. Crawford went on to finish second in the district and open the playoffs with a win over Goldthwaite. In the area round, Murphy ran for 202 yards and three touchdowns as Crawford advanced with a 50 point win. Facing Hico in a regular season rematch and leading 14-8 in the third quarter, the Tigers responded with a game tying score and took the lead for good on a two-point conversion. For the second straight season, Crawford’s playoff run ended in the regional round.

2015 OutlookCrawford will have experience back on offense but will have to replace its biggest playmaker. The Pirates return seven starters but will be replacing play making running back Braden Murphy who rushed for 2,110 yards in his senior season. Quarterback Wyatt Griffith will be leaned on more during his senior season but the Crawford split back system has proven to churn out playmakers over the years. The Pirates return five starters on defense and will be led by two-way starters Bo Pearson, Max Viladevall and Griffith, all of whom were first team all-district on both sides of the ball. Griffith led Crawford with seven interceptions last season. The Pirates will be tested in their non-district schedule as four of the five teams they play made the playoffs last year and won at least one postseason game. One of the better games in Central Texas will be on October 23 when Mart visits Crawford in what will likely be a showdown for the district championship.

2014 ReviewThe Ellison football program was in the midst of a 30-game losing streak as Trent Gregory began his second season in charge. Only responsible for a third of the losses, it was still an albatross hanging over the program. The season kicked off in the best way possible for the Eagles when Raziel Brooks returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown against Eagle Pass. Ellison took a lead into the half but was unable to maintain it as Eagle Pass came from behind to win and extend Ellison’s losing streak to 31 games. Facing Bryan Rudder the following week, a team with a 12-game losing streak, the timing seemed perfect for the streak to come to an end. Ellison got on the board first with a 4-yard touchdown run from Deon Burch. The Eagles used a little trickery when receiver Christian Jackson threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Devon Johnson to extend the lead to 13-0. Ellison led by as many as 27 points in their first win since November 5, 2010 when the Eagles beat Shoemaker to end the season. Ellison was on track to begin a winning streak when Brooks returned the opening kickoff against Round Rock McNeil 95-yards for a touchdown. But McNeil scored the next 20 points and held on to beat Ellison. The following week against Pflugerville Connally, Ellison responded in a big way by running the football. Brooks and Brandon Johnson combined for 360 yards and six touchdowns and the Eagle defense forced six turnovers in the first shutout posted since 2009. Ellison struggled during district play as the Eagles went winless and ended the season by losing their final six games.

2015 OutlookTrent Gregory enters his third season at Ellison with a lot to build on from last year. There won’t be any chatter about a long losing streak heading into the season and he has 13 starters back from a team heading in the right direction after years of trying to find ways to win. Carl Robinson III returns at quarterback to lead an offense with six starters returning. Robinson started all 10 games as a sophomore last season and should be more comfortable in his junior year. He’ll have speedsters Christian Jackson and Jayden Smith to throw to. Both run track at Ellison. Seven starters return on a defense that showed flashes of being a dominate group last season. The schedule has the potential to yield more wins than the year prior as Ellison looks to get back to being in the playoff discussion.

2014 ReviewWith an experienced roster back, Gatesville was in the playoff hunt right up until the end of the season. When the season started, it took a couple games for the Hornets to come together. Following losses to eventual playoff teams Brownwood and Stephenville, the Hornets rebounded in a big way against Connally. The Cadets scored 103 points in their first two games but were held to only 20 as Dakota Vernon rushed for 259 yards and a touchdown leading Gatesville to its first win of the season. Following a close loss against West, the Hornets wrapped up non-district play with a win over Salado. After dropping its district opener to La Vega, Gatesville quarterback Jeff Speer threw for 115 yards and ran for three touchdowns as the Hornets picked up their first district win against Lampasas. The playoffs seemed within reach when Alex Thompson scored the go-ahead touchdown against Robinson, an 8-yard run with 16 seconds left, to lift the Hornets to a 35-28 win. Entering the final game of the regular season against China Spring, Gatesville would make the playoffs with a win or a loss by six points or less. Despite a valiant effort against the Cougars, the Hornets season ended after a 10 point loss. 2015 OutlookComing off a season where five of its six losses were to teams that ended up making the playoffs, a return to the postseason seems inevitable for Gatesville. Offensively, Gatesville returns five starters, including two-year starting quarterback Jeff Speer and running back Dakota Vernon. Defense may be the strength of the team where six starters return, including Cooper Edmiston, who is essentially the quarterback of the defense. The schedule looks to be a bit more forgiving this season as many of the schools they play won’t have as much experience returning. Look for a repeat of last season as Gatesville’s push for the playoffs will likely come down to the final two games of the season against Robinson and China Spring.

2014 ReviewIn his first season taking over for his father and legendary head coach Gary Proffitt, Greg Proffitt guided Goldthwaite into the playoffs for its 11th straight appearance despite battling injuries and lack of numbers. There were games when the Eagles were only able to dress 18 players. After a season opening loss to Mart, Goldthwaite rebounded winning its next two games before dropping its final two non-district contests. The Eagles got off to a hot start in district play by winning their first two games by sizable margins. Goldthwaite dropped its next two games to Tolar and eventual district champion Hico. The Eagles rolled past Hamilton in their final regular season game to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Every team Goldthwaite lost to during the season made the playoffs.

Coach Proffitt Says:“Our district is very tough top to bottom and if you don’t show up to play on any night you will end up with a loss. Tolar and Hico both made playoff runs and will certainly be good again this year.”

2015 OutlookEven though Greg Proffitt is only entering his second season as head coach at Goldthwaite, he’s been familiar with the program ever since he’s been a football coach. Proffitt will be looking to build on last season’s playoff appearance with a solid corps of players returning. Even though they’ll run out of multiple formations, expect the Eagles to continue their run first philosophy behind an offensive line that has depth. Travis Head and Dylan Sanders will lead the way on the offensive line for returning quarterback Jansen Head. The Eagles will need to replace their lead running back with Joseph Paddock lost to graduation. The non-district schedule will be tough as it features four schools that made the playoffs last season. Goldthwaite will open the season at perennial power Mart.

2014 ReviewOffensive coordinator Bruce McDonald was promoted to head coach to replace Kodi Crane who left for a head coaching job at Gonzales. Following a season opening loss to Bullard, Groesbeck welcomed Cochrane, a school from Alberta, Canada. While the Goats were hospitable to their neighbors from the north off the field, they dominated on the field. Quarterback Chandler Boyd threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 65 yards and another score as Groesbeck won by 48 points. The Goats lost their final three games of the non-district schedule, including a one point loss to Jourdanton. District play did not go Groesbeck’s way as the Goats went 0-4 heading into their rivalry game against Mexia. Despite being within striking distance heading into the fourth quarter, the Goats were unable to come back against their rivals as the Navasota River sign remained in Mexia for the second straight season. Groesbeck missed the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

2015 OutlookBruce McDonald enters his second season as head coach and is hoping some of the growing pains of last season pay off. Quarterback Mitchell Waller had three starts as a sophomore and will lead an offense that returns most of its skill players. He’ll look to get the ball to Jaylon Medlock who was Groesbeck’s leading receiver last season. The offensive line will have a lot of new faces this year and will need to come together quickly. Defensively, leading tackler John O’Kelley returns to lead a unit that should be improved from last season. With three starters returning in the secondary and two on the defensive line, the Goats should cut down on the 36 points per game they gave up last season. If the young players can build on last season’s experience, Groesbeck should be in the mix at the end of the year for a playoff spot.

2014 ReviewWith a full offseason under second-year head coach Jerry Edwards, Harker Heights managed to get off to a strong start winning its first three non-district games. In 2013, Edwards took over the program in the middle of the summer and Harker Heights lost its first four games. Following a loss in its final non-district matchup against Temple, the Knights opened up district play with a win over Ellison. In the win, quarterback Troy Smith accomplished the rare feat of having a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown. Harker Heights went on to lose its next three district games but rebounded with a win against Killeen. The win setup a de facto play-in game for the playoffs against Belton. Trailing by 11 points in the fourth quarter, Smith connected with D’undre Mitchell for a 35-yard touchdown pass with 4:55 remaining in the game to cut the lead to 45-40. After Belton recovered the onside kick, Ryan Turck recovered a fumble for the Knights that gave them a chance to pull off the comeback. But with 1:32 remaining on fourth down from the Belton 35 yard line, Smith’s pass was intercepted as Belton hung on to win, ending Harker Height’s chase for a playoff spot.

Coach Edwards Says:“Overall in 2015 we will be a more complete team. We will be bigger upfront on both lines where we struggled as a team last year.”

2015 Outlook Harker Heights will be bigger on both the offensive and defensive lines as Edwards enters his third year in charge of the football program. Five starters return on offense where Edwards says, “We expect to have a more stable offensive line and a good group of talented younger players that can run the ball.” The biggest spot to fill will be quarterback as Troy Smith moves on to the collegiate level after starting for three seasons. Impact receiver Justin Rone returns after missing half a season with a broken hand. Defensively five starters also return including key players on the defensive line, linebacking corps and secondary. However, several starters also need to be replaced and the inexperience could hinder the Knights early in the season. If they can find a suitable quarterback to replace Smith and the defense comes together, Harker Heights should compete for a playoff spot.

2014 ReviewKilleen missed the playoffs for the second straight season but was able to get experience for younger players as the program moves forward. The young Kangaroos got the season off to a great start with a come from behind win over Leander. Killeen went on a 71 yard scoring drive capped off by Brian Rubin’s 1-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left in the game. The three point lead was Killeen’s first in the game. The Roos lost their next two games but used a quarterback tandem to end non-district play with a win over Manor. Quarterbacks Kenny Arnold and Keondre Parker-Lewis combined for 341 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Killeen opened up district play with two straight losses including a narrow one point defeat at the hands of Belton. The Kangaroos rebounded against Ellison to pick up their first district win of the season. Arnold threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 99 yards in the win over the Eagles. Arnold had another strong showing in Killeen’s final regular season game against Shoemaker. The junior threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns as the Kangaroos beat playoff bound Shoemaker. 2015 OutlookOn January 15 Sam Jones announced his retirement after 11 seasons as head coach of Killeen. He was 72-50 and made six postseason appearances during his time in charge of the program. Jones’ coaching career spanned 38 years. A little more than a month later, defensive coordinator Neil Searcy was promoted to head coach. It’s his second stint as a head coach as Searcy coached Wichita Falls Hirschi from 2006-11. Killeen returns a good amount of experience from last year including quarterback Kenny Arnold to run the offense. Three offensive linemen return as the group will be led by two-year starter Darius Mosely. Jamal King moves from tight end to running back and will provide a power presence in the backfield. Eight starters return on a defense that will be led by safety and two-year starter Jequell Johnson. The group will look to improve on the 29 points per game it allowed last season. Expectations around Killeen are to return to the playoffs. If the returning players can build on the experience they gained last season, the Kangaroos two year postseason drought could end.

2014 ReviewThere were some struggles in the non-district schedule, but La Vega was able to gel once district play rolled around. The Pirates split their first two games and went to overtime against Lampasas. La Vega answered the Badgers opening score in overtime and made a bold call on a successful two-point conversion to win the game. The Pirates were able to carry the momentum over the following week against district leading Burnet. After falling behind 14-0, freshman quarterback Jamal Williams sparked a comeback while throwing for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman running back Cameron Henry accounted for 174 of the 327 rushing yards La Vega had in the five point win. With a district championship on the line the following week against Robinson, Henry found Brandon Benson for a 59-yard touchdown pass to extend the La Vega lead 41-28. Following a Robinson touchdown with 1:49 remaining to cut the lead to six, the Pirates were able to stop the Rockets hail mary attempt to end the game. Trailing by eight points in the bi-district round of the playoffs, La Vega forced a fumble on its own 5-yard line that was returned 95 yards for a touchdown by Nick Ward. The Pirates two-point conversion failed as La Vega’s season would come to an end.

2015 OutlookLa Vega used a portion of last season to allow its young players to grow as the Pirates are in prime position to have an exciting year. One position La Vega won’t have to worry about this year is quarterback as sophomore Jamal Williams emerged to run the offense last season. He’ll have receiver Brandon Benson back to throw to along with running backs Kendal Ratliff and Cameron Henry to hand the ball off to. With all the offensive talent and speed back, La Vega will score a lot of points this season. Defensively, the Pirates will be led by defensive back Parrish Cobb who has multiple offers from power five conference schools. If the defense can cut down on the 34 points it let up per game and the offense limits turnovers, the Pirates have the potential to make some noise in the playoffs.

2014 ReviewBrian Emerson’s second season at Lampasas looked promising after non-district play. Following a season opening loss, the Badgers rebounded by beating Lago Vista in overtime. Cohen Cockburn scored a 1-yard touchdown on the first possession in overtime and the Badger defense stopped Lago Vista as they reached the nine yard line. Lampasas beat Austin Reagan, Lorena and Fischer Canyon Lake to close out the non-district schedule. All of the Badgers’ non-district wins were against playoff teams. But once district play rolled around, the winning magic disappeared. Lampasas lost its first three district games, including a heartbreaking overtime loss to eventual district champion La Vega which saw the Badgers lose a 21 point lead in the contest. The next week against China Spring, Lampasas wouldn’t let a lead slip away again. Leading by seven in the fourth quarter, Collin Bowen scored a 2-yard touchdown to give the Badgers a 27-13 lead. With less than four minutes remaining in the game, Chris Swope tipped a China Spring pass that was intercepted by Luke Argo to secure the first district win of the season. Lampasas lost its final regular season game to Burnet. 2015 OutlookLampasas will look to improve in district competition after a promising start last season. Cohen Cockburn returns at quarterback to run the Wing-T offense after seven starts in 2014. Spencer Maples was second on the team in rushing last season and will have an even bigger role as the only returning starter at running back. Nathan Keese will see action on both sides of the ball this year as he was strictly a defensive player in his sophomore season. Jace Hankins could also play both ways. Caleb O’Connor is the leading returning tackler on a defense returning five starters. A big concern for Brian Emerson will be the line play on both sides of the ball along with the lack of depth. The schedule will be challenging as four of the five teams on the non-district schedule made the playoffs last season. The district may be even tougher this season since many of the other teams return a lot of experience.

2014 ReviewHaving to replace many of its starters combined with a difficult non-district schedule against old district rivals, Lorena got off to a slow start losing its first two non-district games in close matchups with China Spring and Robinson. The Leopards had leads in the fourth quarter in both games. Lorena rebounded the following week by reversing a trend, as they came from behind to beat La Vega. The Leopards closed out non-district play with a 2-3 record. All three losses were by seven points or less. Lorena opened up district play with two dominating wins over Groesbeck and Rusk. Following the 2-0 start, the Leopards lost their final three district games all to playoff representatives from district 7-4A Division II. Even though they ended the regular season on a losing streak, the Leopards advanced to the playoffs for the seventh straight season.

2015 OutlookLorena will look to its defense to help it get off to a good start to the season. Seven starters return including three in the secondary. “We will start the season with more experience on the defensive side of the ball so it will be extremely important that we play well on defense until we grow on the offensive side of the ball. I feel our kids will be aggressive and play hard each week,” said head coach Ray Biles. On offense, Lorena only returns three starters and only one of those is on the offensive line. “The offensive line will need to get better each week for our team to improve,” said Biles. Despite the inexperience, Biles believes the offense has the potential to be explosive if it can mesh as a unit. Depth is a concern as several young players will have to step up and prove themselves. The Leopards should contend for a playoff spot, looking to extend their streak to eight consecutive years making the postseason. “I don’t expect anything to be easy in the district this season. If you make mistakes, you will lose,” said Biles. Playing in a district this physical helps prepare you for the playoffs.”

2015 OUTLOOKWith a solid nucleus returning from Baylor’s co-Big 12 championship team, expectations are high again for the Bears to win a third straight Big 12 title and make the College Football Playoff. The preseason game of the year in the Big 12, if not in the country, is when Baylor visits Big 12 co-champion TCU on November 27. The day after Thanksgiving showdown will continue a rivalry which has gotten more intense each year and may once again decide who will win the conference championship with a head-to-head tiebreaker in place for the 2015 season

OFFENSEThe Baylor offense has the potential to be even more explosive than it was in 2014 as it returns eight starters on offense. The biggest hole to fill will be at quarterback as Seth Russell is slated to take over for All-American quarterback Bryce Petty. The fourth-year junior quarterback has played in 15 games in his two seasons, including one start. Russell’s athletic ability may translate into more running from the quarterback position. If he struggles, freshman phenom and early enrollee Jarrett Stidham could get a shot at running the offense. Rated a four star prospect by Rivals, Stidham was one of the top quarterback recruits in the country out of Stephenville High School. Russell will have plenty of experienced players around him. Led by All-American left tackle Spencer Drango, the entire starting offensive line from the Cotton Bowl is back. Baylor also returns its top three running backs from last season, including junior Shock Linwood who led the team in rushing. The receiving corps will have to replace All-American Antwan Goodley and All-Big 12 honoree Levi Norwood but returns leading receivers Corey Coleman and K.D. Cannon, who both gained over 1,000 yards receiving in 2014. With 10 of 13 receivers back from last season, the group shouldn’t miss a beat and has the potential to be even better this season. One other change is Kendal Briles taking over as offensive coordinator for his first full season. Briles was promoted to the position before the Cotton Bowl when Philip Montgomery left to take the head coaching position at Tulsa. The offense looked sharp in Briles’ debut at the Cotton Bowl scoring 41 points and putting up 583 yards of total offense.

DEFENSEThere may not be a more experienced group in the conference than the Baylor defense. The group returns nine starters, losing only All-American linebacker Bryce Hager and nickelback Collin Brence. A talented defensive line returns with more experience. Led by Shawn Oakman and Andrew Billings (Waco High), the unit has everyone back from last season and is expected to be one of the best in the nation. Freshmen All-American Taylor Young returns at linebacker and will be joined by Aiavion Edwards and Grant Campbell to fill the two linebacker spots. Travon Blanchard will replace Brence at the nickleback position. A year after having zero combined starts at cornerback, Baylor returns both starters in All-Big 12 selection Xavien Howard, who tied for the team lead in interceptions (four), and Ryan Reid. Despite starting 12 games last season, Reid is being pushed by Tion Wright for the starting spot. Baylor will be experienced at safety as third-year starter Terrell Burt and second-year starter Orion Stewart (Midway) are both back. With all the experience back, Baylor will look to improve on its No. 50 ranking in total defense and No. 48 rank in scoring defense in 2014.

SPECIAL TEAMSAfter breaking the school scoring record with 129 points kicking in 2014, sophomore Chris Callahan is back as the team’s place-kicker. Callahan is known most for kicking the game-winning field goal as time expired in Baylor’s come from behind win against TCU. True freshman Drew Galitz is projected to take over for Spencer Roth at punter. Roth was a four-year starter and was an honorable mention All-American in 2013. Four-year punt and kick returner Levi Norwood will be replaced by Corey Coleman (punts) and Johnny Jefferson and Ishmael Zamora (kick-offs).

2015 OUTLOOKOFFENSEFor the fifth straight year, UMHB completed the regular season without a loss, but for the first time in that span, did not advance past the second round of the playoffs. The offense returns six starters from last season including quarterback Zach Anderson (2,319 yds passing, 20 TD; 308 yds rushing, 4 TD.) Anderson has two years starting experience as he begins his senior campaign but will be relieved at times by junior Blake Jackson (470 yds passing, 7 TD; 360 yds rushing, 6 TD.) He’ll have Marcus Wimby (47 rec, 470 yds, 2 TD) and Wykeyhe Walker (27 rec, 552 yds, 5 TD) back at receiver. There will be plenty of running backs with experience. Malcolm Miller (387 yds, 4 TD), Duane Thompson (664 yds, 16 TD) and Michael Carpenter (472 yds, 6 TD) combined to rush for more than 1,500 yards and 26 touchdowns. They’ll have Connally Fuller and Broderick Jenkins back on the offensive line to open up running room. All-American tight end Eric Nelson will be missed in the redzone and in the running game.

DEFENSEThe Cru return seven starters on defense but will have to replace leading tackler and All-American defensive back Eric Allen. UMHB returns its next four leading tacklers in Pierce Thedford (65 tackles, 3 Int), Kris Brown (64 tackles, 5 Int), Baylor Mullins (58 tackles, 3 Int) and Matt Cody (56 tackles). The defensive line returns three of four starters, including Teidrick Smith (47 tackles, 9 sacks) who led the team in sacks and was named an honorable mention All-American last season. Mullins and Cody lead a strong linebacker corps with Thedford rotating in. Brown led the team in interceptions last season and will be looked to replace Allen’s leadership in the secondary. The defense allowed more than 20 points only four times last season and with all the experience back, there could be an improvement this year.

SPECIAL TEAMSJacob O’Neil returns for his senior season to handle the place kicking duties. He was 10-19 on field goals last season with a long of 50 yards. He was perfect from inside 30 yards and is the leading returning scorer in the conference. Baylor Mullins will handle the punting duties again this season. He averaged 36 yards per kick with a long of 54 yards.

2014 ReviewMarlin’s season got off to a great start by beating eventual playoff team Academy in its season opener. The Bulldogs dropped their next two games and then gave Franklin, the second ranked team in 3A, all they could handle. Jarice Stricklin scored his fourth touchdown of the game to cut the Franklin lead to two points with 57 seconds left, but Marlin was unable to get any closer. Following its third straight loss, Marlin came back from down 14 points with under seven minutes left in its game against Garrison and pulled out a two point win. The Bulldogs found themselves in a much different looking district after dropping a division following realignment. After a district opening loss to Rogers, the Bulldogs won a triple overtime thriller on the road against Dublin. In the win, Marlin rushed for 424 yards on 55 carries. The Bulldogs were unable to carry over the momentum of the overtime win as they dropped their next two district games. Heading into the final game of the regular season, Marlin needed some help to make the playoffs. The Bulldogs took care of business and beat Bruceville-Eddy, however Clifton was unable to beat Dublin and Marlin missed the playoffs for the third straight season. The Bulldogs return their top three rushers from last season, including Jarice Stricklin who is coming off a thousand yard season. Quarterback will be a question mark as they’ll have to replace three-year starter Paul Humphrey. Defensively, the Bulldogs are looking to be more consistent. They had some great performances last season but also had some lapses. Three starters return in the secondary and look for that to be the strength of the unit. The defense is also looking to replace its leader, Bennie Huitt Jr., who was lost to graduation. Marlin was right on the cusp of making the postseason last year and with four schools making the playoffs in a six team district, expect Marlin to be in the mix again this year.

2014 ReviewFor most schools a second straight trip to the state semifinals would be looked at as a successful season. Mart isn’t most schools. Despite a 13-1 record and being a game away from playing for a state title, the Panthers would tell you the season was a disappointment. For the first 13 games, Mart was dominate. No school got closer than 14 points in those 13 games. During that stretch, quarterback De’Nerian Thomas became the all-time rushing leader in Central Texas. Against Axtell, Thomas ran for 228 yards and three touchdowns. He finished the game with 6,617 career yards, breaking Chilton’s Travis Landrum’s record of 6,535 yards set from 2003-06. Mart’s stampede through its schedule came to a halt against Canadian in the state semifinals. The Panthers found themselves in a 14-0 hole and couldn’t recover. Despite cutting the lead to 7 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Thomas, sloppy play, missed opportunities and a sound Canadian game plan took away big plays from an offense that had been explosive all season. The Panthers only mustered 14 points against the eventual 2A Division I state champions.

2015 OutlookMart will have a vastly different look heading into the season on the field and in the coaching ranks. Rusty Nail surprisingly resigned as head coach in January to take a job at an insurance company. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had,” Nail said on the day he announced his resignation. “You couldn’t write a script as good as the one that’s turned out for myself and this program over the last nine years.” Nail won two state titles and also made two additional state title game appearances in his nine seasons as head coach. A few days later, offensive coordinator Kevin Hoffman was promoted to head coach. Hoffman will have the task of replacing a dynamic playmaker De’Nerian Thomas at quarterback. Kellen Martin took some snaps at the quarterback position last year and looks to be next in line to run the Mart offense. Martin isn’t as athletic as recent Panther signal callers so the offense may be tweaked to better suit his talents. Mart will also be losing running back D’Marcus Cosby who decided to try and graduate early and help support his family by getting a full-time job and will not play football his senior season. Despite the new faces, Hoffman expects to have a solid offensive line led by Bryson Nail. Hoffman believes his defense will need to show improvement as there will be new personnel on that side of the ball as well. Despite the inexperience, Mart has shown a track record of having talented players. Even though there’s a new head coach and a lot of unfamiliar players this season, the expectations of winning a state championship remain.

2014 ReviewIt took a little bit of time, but McGregor finally found the right mix of players to have a successful season. The Bulldogs needed some time for their young players to grow and for a leader to emerge at quarterback. McGregor had the task of replacing four-year starting quarterback Troy Allison to lead the offense. Starting the season off with a 1-3 record in non-district play, McGregor turned the corner in its district opener and found its leader in a come from behind win over Grandview. Down 35-18 at the half, the Bulldogs were led by Hunter January who threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns as McGregor scored 36 unanswered points in the come from behind win. The Bulldogs dropped two of their next three games but rebounded with a win against Hillsboro and put themselves in position to make the playoffs. Heading into the final regular season game against Glen Rose, the Bulldogs had a chance to clinch the second spot out of the district with a win over the Tigers. Using a 28-0 halftime lead, McGregor held on for a 14 point win. The Bulldogs season came to an end in the bi-district round against Academy. Tied 21-21, the Bumblebees made a 17-yard field goal as time expired to end McGregor’s season.Key LossesHunter January – Kansas (Preferred walk-on); Cory Bowers – Navarro Returning StartersJR WR Andrew Taylor 6’0, 175 – 35 rec, 536 yds, 7 TDSR RB Djzon McHenry 5’5, 160 – 645 yds rushing, 8 TDSO WR Jared Lorenz 5’9, 165 – 305 yds receivingJR RB/LB Alex Parsons 5’10, 210 – 284 yds rushing, 5 TD; 106 tkls, 2 INTJR OL Coby Bess 6’2, 215 SR OL Jacob Ethredge 6’4, 245 JR LB Blake Boles 5’7, 150 – 92 tkls; District Newcomer of the YearJR DB Andrew Taylor 6’0, 175 – 82 tkls, 4 INTJR LB Kyle Sadler 5’10, 205Key ReturneesSR OL Luis Reyes 6’1, 235SO K Joanly Martinez 5’9, 170 – 35/37 XP, 3 FG w/long of 41ydsSO OL Jonathon Phenix 6’0, 165 SR LB Triston Rogers 5’10, 175JR WR James Lane 5’11, 170SO WR Tayvon Thompson 5’6, 130SR DB Ryan Norwood 6’0, 150Key NewcomersJR QB Cedric McLeian Jr. 5’9, 205JR OL Skylar Sanders 6’4, 340JR OL Epi Benitez 6’1, 285JR DL Connor Zacharias 6’2, 225SO DL Mikey Castillo 5’8, 215SO OL Greg Williams 5’8, 235Offense: Multiple Defense: 3-4

2015 OutlookMcGregor has some experience back but will also have to work in some of its youth. Head coach Tim Seward believes although the team is talented and young, they should improve as the season progresses. The Bulldogs return six starters on offense but will be looking for a new quarterback with Hunter January off to Kansas. Cedric McLeian Jr. will get the first shot at running the offense and is a player Seward describes as, “highly accurate and a great runner.” On defense, four starters return including Alex Parsons and district newcomer of the year Blake Boles. The Bulldogs are looking to have fewer starters who play both ways this season, a change from prior years. There will be a lot of parity in the district this year as almost any team could win it and multiple teams could finish with the same district record.

2014 ReviewThere may not have been a team in Central Texas that used its non-district schedule more to prepare itself for district play than Mexia did. In all five of its non-district games, the Blackcats played a team that would eventually make the playoffs, which helped launch Mexia to success in its own district. After opening district play with a win, Mexia made a huge statement against preseason district favorite Connally. Led by Matron Gerald’s 239 rushing yards and three touchdowns and Draeshaun Hanna’s 215 rushing yards and five touchdowns, Mexia made a statement scoring 82 points in a win over Connally. After beating Lorena, Mexia took on Fairfield in what was a de facto district title game. Down seven just before the half, Hanna broke loose for a 70-yard touchdown run to tie the game 21-21 heading into halftime. Hanna gave Mexia the lead for good in the third quarter scoring his fourth touchdown of the night, a 5-yard run, leading Mexia to its first district championship since 2008. Despite a perfect district record, Mexia’s magic suddenly disappeared in the playoffs. Trailing 27-7 at the half, Mexia stormed back to cut the lead to three but was unable to get any closer in the bi-district loss.

2015 OutlookThey didn’t have a track record, but Lamonte Chambers felt good about his team heading into last season and they won a district championship with a perfect 5-0 record. Now in his fourth season at Mexia, Chambers has built a foundation and turned the program around that was winless in 2012. Leading the Mexia offense will be junior and two-year starting quarterback Jaylon Gipson. Gipson showed vast improvement in his sophomore season and will only continue to get better. The Blackcats will have to replace standout running back Draeshaun Hanna, now at West Texas A&M, who was a key piece in Mexia’s district championship run. Matron Gerald and Darius Dorsey will be tasked with filling Hanna’s production at running back. There is some experience back, but Mexia is looking for more consistent play from both the offensive and defensive lines. Linebacker Tyrik Ray returns to lead the defense after a 116 tackle season. After tasting success in the regular season by winning a district title, Mexia is hungry to make a run in the playoffs after last year’s disappointment.

2014 ReviewWith a talented corps of players returning there was potential for Midway to have an exceptional season, but there were others without varsity experience that would need to produce. After Midway’s first game against Lake Travis, many of those questions were answered. A perennial power in Texas high school football, Midway shocked the Cavaliers on their home field. Up one with 1:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Panthers needed four yards to put the game away. Expecting them to load up against the run, Midway opted for a play-action pass that resulted in a 71-yard touchdown. Midway cruised to a district championship and opened the playoffs in style. Powered by a 41 point first quarter, the Panthers dominated Tyler Lee in the first playoff game at Baylor’s McLane Stadium. On a foggy, windy, misty night in Midlothian, Eric Clayburn carried the ball 40 times for 202 yards and four touchdowns as the Panthers held on for a seven point win in the area round. Midway’s season would came to an end in a back-and-forth playoff game against Spring. In a game that featured five lead changes, Spring was able to score with 57 seconds left in the fourth quarter to take a one point lead. Midway drove the ball to the Spring 35 yard-line but Hicks’ pass intended for Devontre Stricklin was intercepted with six seconds left in the game.

2015 OutlookWith five seniors receiving division one scholarships, Midway will have to replace a talented group of skill players. Four starters return on offense, including running back Eric Clayburn who is coming off a season that saw him run for almost 1,700 yards and score 24 touchdowns. Joining Clayburn in the backfield will be Korey Chapman, who is coming off a double digit touchdown season of his own. With the loss of receiver Devontre Stricklin (Baylor), Joseph Ward will be the top receiving threat. Sam Glaesmann will take over running the offense for Ben Hicks (SMU). Despite the lack of starting experience, Glaesmann is verbally committed to Rice and will be looking to have a standout senior season. Nick Sheldon is the only starter returning on the offensive line and will have the task of leading a unit that has proven ball carriers behind it. Defensively only two starters return. Christian Davis returns in the secondary and will be joined by Dae Dae Walker. Walker received a lot of playing time last season and had two interceptions against Copperas Cove. Linebacker Landon Jones is the other returning starter on defense. Midway has proven to be a program that doesn’t rebuild, it reloads. With some solid returners and new talent on the field, the Panthers have the expectation of winning another district championship.

2014 ReviewKevin Chase took over the Moody football program after a successful run as Fairfield’s offensive coordinator. He was the architect of an Eagles offense that set a scoring record in the 3A classification while reaching the Division II state title game in 2013. Chase’s offense got off to a hot start for Moody in the season opener against Malakoff Cross Roads as quarterback Toby Smith threw for 275 yards and four touchdowns and Moody scored 54 points in a 24 point win. The Bearcats went on to win their first three games but stumbled against Bruceville-Eddy and Florence to end non-district play. The losing streak stretched to three games with Moody losing its district opener to Holland. But the Bearcats rebounded the following week against Riesel. Tied 7-7, Evan Bodner scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to help Moody pull away and end its losing streak. Heading into the final game of the regular season, Moody had a shot at making the playoffs but needed help. The Bearcats needed a win over Thorndale and a Rosebud-Lott win over Thrall. If the Cougars beat Thrall by 12 or more points, Moody could make the playoffs with a loss. But the season came to an end as the Bearcats were unable to beat Thorndale and Rosebud-Lott lost to Thrall.

Coach Chase Says: “They are the most committed and hardest working group I have ever coached.”

2015 OutlookKevin Chase enters his second season as head coach of Moody already having laid a solid foundation during his first season as head coach. Moody showed drastic improvement on offense, almost doubling production from the previous season, going from a team that scored about 18 points per game in 2013 to about 34 points per game last season. The offense can be even better with the return of quarterback Toby Smith and running back Evan Bodner. One big concern Chase has on offense is with his big guys. The entire offensive line graduated last season and five new starters will be on the field. “The offensive line must mature quickly in order for us to be successful,” said Chase. The defense played well at times last season but was inconsistent. Chase is hoping better execution on both sides of the ball in his second season can get Moody over the hump and into the playoffs.

2014 ReviewA drop in classification helped Reicher have its first winning record since 2010 and the Cougars went to the playoffs for the third straight season. The season didn’t start well when Reicher lost projected starting quarterback Jeric Smith to a hamstring injury in a preseason scrimmage. The injury forced the Cougars to move Zach Martinez, their biggest playmaker, to quarterback. After a season opening loss and down 3-0 in the 4th quarter against Austin St. Dominic, Martinez ran for two touchdowns to propel Reicher to its first win. The Cougars opened up district play with three straight wins including a dominating defensive performance against Dallas Lutheran that featured Chet Deene returning a fumble for a touchdown, Jason Conners returning an interception for a score and the starting defense limiting the Lions to minus-37 yards of offense. Reicher suffered its first district loss to Dallas First Baptist but rebounded the following week against Garland Christian where the defense held the Swordsman to 82 total yards. Reicher closed out the regular season in a strong way against Irving The Highlands. Martinez threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 109 yards and an additional two scores. The win secured Reicher a playoff spot for the 38th time in school history.

2015 OutlookWith a large pool of talent returning and with the injury bug hopefully behind them, there are high expectations at Reicher heading into the season. Playmaker Zach Martinez returns after playing multiple offensive positions last season. Martinez got extensive time at quarterback but with Jeric Smith healthy, look for Martinez to return to playing on the outside so the Cougars can get him the ball in space. Protecting Smith will be an experienced offensive line which head coach Mark Waggoner believes will make a huge difference. Defensively, there are a lot of starters back from a group who looked dominate at times. The defense may be a bit undersized, but will be fast. The district will be tough because it includes defending TAPPS Division III state champion Trinity Christian Cedar Hill and Dallas First Baptist, a team that has one of the best receivers in the country.

2014 ReviewMonte Endres took over a Riesel football program that did not win a game in the 2013 season. Endres came from the powerhouse Allen football program where he coached freshman linebackers. His previous head coaching experience included a stop at Muenster. The season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start as Riesel ended a 12 game losing streak with a win over Axtell. Following the win, the Indians won the following week against Bruceville-Eddy. The back-to-back wins were the first since 2012 when Riesel beat Moody and Bruceville-Eddy in consecutive weeks. With a 2-0 start, Endres had the program moving in the right direction. Despite the hot start, Riesel dropped its next seven games to end the season on a losing streak. Endres said the toughest part about his first year as head coach was developing a winning attitude.

2015 OutlookMonte Endres enters his second season as head coach with a plethora of returning players who got experience playing in his system. Endres believes the strength of the team will be the offensive line where four starters return. Returning running back Sabion Kubitza will benefit from a cohesive unit up front. Running the offense will be Landon Dieterich who will improve in his second year in Endres system. A year of experience will hopefully cut down on turnovers which plagued Riesel last year. Endres expects to win more games this season and believes the district is wide open. “I think our district is very competitive, no dominate team. Anyone can beat anyone,” he said. With four of the six schools in the district making the playoffs and a bunch of lettermen returning, Riesel has a chance to make it back to the postseason for the first time since 2011.

2014 ReviewWith an experienced team back that featured its quarterback, running back and nine starters on defense, Robinson had high expectations entering the season. The Rockets got off to a great start winning its first four games against schools that all qualified for the postseason. Robinson finished up the non-district schedule with a head scratching loss to Athens. The Rockets opened up district play with a win over Lampasas. The following week Robinson lost to Burnet in a game that featured six turnovers by the Rockets. Robinson rebounded with a win against China Spring that saw LeVonte Owens run for 320 yards and the Rockets pulled away in the second half scoring 28 points after the game was tied at halftime. Despite losing its final two district games, tiebreakers gave Robinson the third seed out of the district in the playoffs. In the bi-district round, the Robinson defense shut down the Boerne passing attack in a 31 point win. In the area round, the Rockets got off to a 14-0 start against La Vernia before a two-hour weather delay. The game was tied in the fourth quarter when Robinson was able to march down the field and regain the lead on Adrian Ceballo’s 32-yard field goal. The Robinson defense was able to hold La Vernia off the scoreboard as the Rockets knocked off the 15-4A Division I champs. The win setup a rematch with district foe Burnet in the Regional round. Trailing by three late in the game, Robinson drove deep into Burnet territory but was unable to convert a game-tying field goal. 2015 OutlookA year after returning a lot of experience, there will be many new faces on Robinson this season. Quarterback Michael Davila enters his third season as a starter and will be leaned on to lead an offense returning four starters. Defensively two starters return. Head coach Tommy Allison is expecting his team to improve throughout the season. “As the year progresses, we will continue to get better and expect to make the playoffs,” he said. Robinson will be tested from the start as every team on its non-district schedule made the postseason last year. The district will continue to be competitive and should provide entertaining football every Friday night.

2014 ReviewWinning its first district title since 1999 and regaining control of the bell over rival Cameron Yoe for the first time in three years highlighted a successful season for the Tigers. Rockdale opened the year with a dominating win over Smithville but was tested the following week against Taylor. Trailing 21-14 midway through the third quarter, Derek Whitsel returned an interception for a touchdown to tie the game. Adolfo Chavira kicked the go-ahead field goal with less than four minutes to play as the Tigers held on to beat the Ducks. The Tigers opened up district play with a showdown against rival Cameron Yoe. Pearce Loth caught three touchdowns and Dailynn Ramey ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers held on for a seven point win on the road against their rival. After knocking off Lago Vista on the road, Rockdale returned home to face Academy in a game that produced one of the most surprising results of the season. The Tigers played from behind all night and were unable to comeback against the Bumblebees in a seven point loss. Head coach Jeff Miller described the defeat as, “a pretty crippling blow to our momentum and confidence.” Rockdale rebounded and claimed its first district title in 15 years. The Tigers opened the playoffs with two dominating wins and held off Kirbyville’s comeback late in the fourth quarter to setup a showdown with rival Cameron Yoe in the state quarterfinals. However round two against the Yoemen turned out differently. Despite getting out to an early 6-0 lead and trailing by eight at the half, Rockdale’s season came to an as Cameron scored twice in the first 1:36 of the second half to take control of the game.

2015 OutlookRockdale is expected to be one of the top teams in the state in 2A Division I but that will depend on the maturation of its young talent. Only one starter returns on offense in all-state receiver Christian Lara. There will be a quarterback competition between David Franklin, Andrew Perez and Jaquayln Crawford. Only a sophomore, Crawford is the best athlete and will be a weapon no matter where he ends up on the field. His only varsity action last season was during the playoffs where he returned a kickoff for a touchdown and ran for 55 yards on 10 carries against eventual state champion Cameron Yoe. Two starters return on defense as linebackers Joey Montelongo and Andrew Perez will have to lead the inexperienced group. Montelongo is an all-district player and third leading tackler from last season’s team. There are no returning starters on the offensive and defensive lines as both groups will have to grow in order for the team to be successful. Rockdale’s home game against Cameron could turn out to be one of the best games of the regular season.

2014 Review Prosper offensive coordinator Darren Anderson was hired at Rogers to replace former head coach Jeff Walker. Walker resigned in May citing family reasons after six seasons as head coach where he was 59-13. Anderson had previous head coaching experience at Tom Bean and looked to install a spread offense, a big change from the run-based slot-T run under Walker. The transition to the new offense was rough and after losing its first two games, Rogers decided to go back to running the football and moved to a multiple I offensive scheme. The change in offense was the spark Rogers needed to return to its old form. After closing out its non-district schedule with two close wins, no team was within two touchdowns of Rogers in district play. Brody Malovets turned into a one man wrecking crew. Against Clifton, Malovets ran for four touchdowns as the Eagles ran for 348 yards as a team in a 31 point win. He finished the season with 1,923 yards rushing and scored 21 touchdowns. The Eagles managed to play four rounds deep into the playoffs, marking their deepest postseason run in 10 years.

2015 OutlookA year after having a lot of experience back, Darren Anderson will have a young football team as he enters his second season as head coach of Rogers. The Eagles return four starters, two on offense and two on defense. Anderson will stick with the multiple I formation offense that sparked Rogers to an 11-game winning streak. The run-first Eagles will need to replace the production Brody Malovets gave them at running back. Clay Gutherie is the lone returner in the backfield. Rogers was a better defensive team last season as they went from giving up 21 points per game in 2013 to about 18 points per game last season. The defense was able to get better as the season progressed and will look to lone returners J.R. Martinez and Jace Williams to lead the inexperienced group. With all the new faces, it’ll be tough to expect Rogers to come close to duplicating last season’s success. But the Eagles have shown to be a program that always makes the playoffs and that shouldn’t change this season.

2014 ReviewBrad Ballard was hired to replace Craig Jackson who resigned early in the year. Ballard graduated from Rosebud-Lott in 1996. He served three seasons as head coach at Coleman high school with a record of 14-18 before returning to his alma mater. Ballard’s return was a rough one during his first season. The Cougars were replacing a talented senior class and had to undergo a rebuilding year where a lot of younger players received playing time while learning a new offensive and defensive system. Rosebud-Lott lost its four non-district games, three of the schools they played eventually made the playoffs. The Cougars also lost their first three district games but picked up their lone win of the season against Riesel. 2015 OutlookDespite the struggles last season, Brad Ballard believes his team will be much improved in his second season as head coach. They’ll have much more experience this year, especially on offense. Quarterback Tyler Willberg is back for his second season as a starter and will have leading rusher Malcolm Johnson and leading receiver Juwon Roberson back. Roberson has shown the ability to be a gamebreaker and looks to have a strong senior season. Ballard expects both offensive and defensive lines to be improved this season. Rosebud-Lott’s struggles last season had a lot to do with inexperience in the trenches. With a solid group of skill players returning, Ballard is expecting the Cougars to make the playoffs. “Thorndale and Holland will be the teams to beat,” he said. “We will have to play consistent week in and week out to give ourselves a chance to compete.” The addition of a fourth playoff spot in each 2A district will help them achieve their goal of returning to the postseason.

2014 ReviewSalado installed a new slot-t offense in the preseason but, after a 0-2 start and 13 points scored in two games, reverted back to the spread they ran the prior season. Following a shutout loss to Rockdale and a close loss to Academy in a low scoring game, the Eagle offense finally came alive against Gatesville. Jacob Little threw for 225 yards and McLane Matthews ran for 101 yards as Salado fell short of a comeback win against Gatesville. Despite losing nine starters to injury and being winless heading into the final game of the regular season, Salado still had a shot at making the playoffs since it played in a five team district with the top four advancing. The Eagles managed to give a lot of their younger players experience but were unable to pull out a win against Smithville and finished the season winless. Reverting back and sticking to the spread scheme should be beneficial with all the young players that got playing time last season. Five starters return on offense including three offensive linemen. Jake Elliot will get the first shot at running the offense as Salado will be breaking in a new quarterback. The defense returns seven starters which includes four defensive linemen. Senior linebacker Tyler Armstrong will lead a unit that will look improve after giving up about 44 points per game last season. Even if it takes some time to mesh with a lot of younger players getting significant playing time, the benefit of being in a smaller district is the Eagles will be in the playoff hunt late into the regular season.

2014 ReviewShoemaker was coming off its first playoff appearance since 2008 and best season record in the 14 year history of the school. The Grey Wolves split their first two games of the season and lost on the road to Round Rock Cedar Ridge. However, that game was later forfeited by Cedar Ridge due to playing an ineligible reserve player. Posting a 3-1 non-district mark, Shoemaker opened district play with a shootout win against Belton. Making his first start at quarterback, Derrick Thomas rushed for 372 yards and six touchdowns against the Tigers. The following week against Ellison, Thomas and running back Isaiah Everett combined for 182 yards rushing and three touchdowns as Shoemaker improved to 2-0 in district play. Following their first district loss, the Grey Wolves rushed for 306 yards and held on for a win against Harker Heights. The Knights cut the lead to 18-13 in the fourth quarter but Shoemaker put the game away with a 70 yard drive capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run by Everett. Despite losing its final two games, Shoemaker was able to make the playoffs for the second straight season. But the Grey Wolves return to the playoffs was a sloppy one as they committed six turnovers in a bi-district loss to Rowlett. The Grey Wolves will have a talented group back on defense led by two monster pass rushers, Alabama commit Kendell Jones and LSU commit Rahssan Thorton. Junior defensive back Tavion Hawthorne was last season’s district co-newcomer of the year and will be part of a secondary that looks to improve on its pass defense. Shoemaker expects to be better on offense where it was relatively one dimensional last season. Running back Isaiah Everett returns along with four offensive linemen that should continue a strong running game. Junior quarterback Tyri’k Barnes will get the first shot at running the offense that should also feature an improved passing game

2014 ReviewFollowing a drop in classification and returning a talented group of skill position players, expectations were high at Temple heading into the season. Quarterback Chad President returned from an ACL injury and running back Jeff Carr was back after receiving district 8-5A offensive player of the year honors. Temple opened the season splitting its first two games. Its lone regular season loss was a close one against 6A Austin Westlake. With 4:07 left in the 4th quarter, President threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Davion Curtis but the snap on the extra point attempt was botched. Trailing by a point, Temple was unable to recover the onside kick and Westlake ran out the clock. Following the loss, and a rainout at Bryan, Temple dominated the rest of its regular season schedule en-route to a district 17-5A championship. After playoff wins against A&M Consolidated and Houston Stratford, Temple beat Ridge Point on Cole Martin’s 42-yard field goal as time expired. Momentum carried over for the Wildcats as they won the next two games to advance to their first state title game since 1992. Trailing Aledo at halftime, Temple stormed back to take the lead with 5:50 left in the game. But the Wildcats were unable to hold on to the lead as Aledo scored with 47 seconds left in the game to take a 49-45 lead and win the 5A Division I state championship. 2015 OutlookDespite a run to the 5A Division I state title game and the loss of standout players Chad President and Jeff Carr to graduation, Temple is still expected to be a serious contender for a state title in 2015. Offensively the Wildcats lose their biggest playmakers in President and Carr but bring back six starters including receiving threats Davion Curtis and Aaron Freeman. Curtis already has offers from Kansas State, Tulsa, SMU and Toledo. Getting the ball to a talented receiving corps will be a question mark with the loss of President. Cole Martin received some experience in a backup role last season and will be the starter heading into the season. Jermaine Townsend will lead an offensive line that returns four starters. Head coach Mike Spradlin describes Townsend as being, “mean, nasty and physical. Very strong player that plays with attitude.” Running backs DeVonte Nealy and Carlos Borbon will look to replace the production of Carr and Marquis Hatcher. Defensively the Wildcats also return six starters including linebacker Quinton Smith who Spradlin describes as, “Quick, fast and a great tackler. Real nose for the ball.” Half of the returning starters on defense are on the line. With 31 lettermen back, Temple will be experienced despite losing key seniors and are the favorites to repeat as district champions. Wildcat stadium will look a little different this season with new turf and the naming of the field after former state championship coach Bob McQueen.

2014 ReviewRonnie Porter’s first season as head coach of his alma mater couldn’t have gotten off to a better start as Troy scored seven unanswered touchdowns after allowing the opening kickoff to be returned for a score in a win over Salado. After winning its first two games, Troy dropped two of its next three non-district games. The Trojans opened up district play with a win over Academy and were primed to beat a struggling Cameron Yoe team, who was only 2-4 heading into the game, for the first time in school history. Unfortunately for Troy, the game served as a catapult for Cameron’s run to another state title. The Trojans rebounded with a win over Florence but dropped the next game against eventual district champion Rockdale. Coach Porter Says:“I do not think there is any question that this is the toughest district in the state.”

2015 OutlookThere will be a lot of new at Troy in Ronnie Porter’s second season as head coach. The Trojans will have new uniforms along with a new offensive scheme. After using variations of the slot-T and spread offenses over the past few seasons, Troy will be installing an offense based out of multiple I-formations. There will be plenty of experience returning on the offensive side of the football as eight starters return to learn the new offense. Four offensive linemen are among the returning starters as the Trojans hope for a smooth transition over to the new scheme. In his second season as head coach, Porter is hoping his team plays, “as hard as we can every week. I believe we have the ingredients for a very good football team. My expectations are to make the playoffs and win games we are ‘not supposed’ to win.” The district schedule will continue to be one of the toughest in the state. Troy will face defending state champion Cameron Yoe, defending district champion Rockdale and much improved playoff team Academy all on the road.

2014 ReviewKeith Willis’ second season at University was a difficult one as the Trojans played a tough schedule and were placed in a tougher district after realignment. Every team University played on its non-district schedule finished the season with a .500 or better record. Three of the schools won at least one playoff game (Belton, East View, Burnet.) Of the four schools that qualified for the playoffs, three won a playoff game and district winner Temple advanced to the 5A Division I state championship game. Building for the future, University played a lot of younger players and by the end of the season, the youth was showing progress. The Trojans gave Pflugerville Connally all they could handle in an eight point loss and closed the season in a competitive game against rival Waco High. Trailing by 10 in the fourth quarter, University forced a fumble on the Lions 5-yard line that was recovered by Kydrick Harris and returned for a touchdown. The defensive score cut the Waco High lead to 13-9. University held the Lions to a field goal on the following drive but a penalty on the play proved to be costly. After new life, Waco High scored a touchdown and put the game out of reach. 2015 OutlookDespite not winning a game last season, head coach Keith Willis is hoping some of the growing pains will pay off in his third season as head coach. University played a lot of younger players last season, and the hope is the experience will start to show results this year. The Trojans were in a couple close games at the end of the season and the University coaching staff believes the team needs to learn how to win and pull those close games out. Eight starters return this season, four on offense and four on defense. The schedule won’t be easy as the first seven games are against teams that either made the playoffs or finished the season with at least a .500 record. University will enter the season on a 16-game losing streak and with the tough early schedule, the streak could continue into late October.

2014 ReviewFollowing a 1-9 season in 2013, Eric Blenden was hired from Frost to turn the Valley Mills football program around. The Eagles lost their first game of the season by a point but managed to rebound and win their next four games. Defensively Valley Mills seemed to be hitting its stride as the Eagles were giving up less than nine points per game during the winning streak. When Valley Mills opened up district play at Crawford, the game served as a homecoming for its head coach who played there in the early 2000s. “I was able to ride my bike to the school, that’s how close I grew up there, lived there all my life,” said Blenden leading up to the game. Valley Mills looked to be hitting its stride, but Crawford showed the Eagles they still had some work left to do shutting them out in a one-sided game. Valley Mills lost four of its five district games, including the finale against Axtell on a last second field goal.

2015 OutlookEric Blenden enters his second season as head coach and will look to reap the benefits by playing a lot of younger players during his first season. Expectations are higher around Valley Mills as the players don’t just want to be known as a team that plays hard, they want to be known for winning. The offensive line has four of its five starters returning which will be key in the Eagles’ Wing-T system. Turnovers were a huge reason why Valley Mills struggled in district games last season and it’s something Blenden knows they’ll have to fix along with cutting down on penalties. A rule change goes into effect this season in 2A allowing four schools to make the playoffs. That should benefit Valley Mills since they play in a highly competitive district and gives the Eagles a better chance at making a return to the postseason.

2014 ReviewComing off another successful season that saw Waco High win a playoff game despite a lot of turnover on the field, the Lions had the task of replacing 17 starters like they did in 2013. Unfortunately, the results were not the same and Waco High struggled to win games. The non-district schedule featured three eventual playoff participants (College Station, Lake Ridge, Belton) along with Harker Heights, but didn’t produce any wins. As the season went on, the injuries started to pile up. District play opened up with a loss to Manor but Waco High rebounded the following week against Pflugerville Connally and picked up its first win of the season. Despite having nine of its offensive starters out with injuries, the Lions scored 24 points in the second quarter in the win. However, the lack of depth showed as Waco High lost its next three games. During that stretch, the Lions gave eventual 5A Division I state finalist, and old rival, Temple one of its most competitive district games. Waco High ended the season with a win over cross-town rival University. With numerous injuries, younger players were able to get experience even though they may not have been ready for the 5A stage. There won’t be as many starters to replace this season as 11 return, five on offense and six on defense. Offensively, Herbst believes the offensive line will be a strength as three of the five starters returning are in that group. That’ll benefit returning running back De’andra Jackson and quarterback Will Richards in the running game. Herbst describes Richards, who will be at quarterback full-time this year, as a playmaker. Receiver is a position of concern. Herbst expects the defense to be an attacking group and will benefit with five of the front seven returning. The district will continue to be competitive, but if Waco High can stay healthy and live up to its lofty standards, a trip back to the playoffs could be in its future.

2014 ReviewThe turnaround of the West football program was one of the feel-good stories of the high school football season. In David Woodard’s second season as head coach, the West offense was consistent throughout the season scoring at least 20 points in every game. Inclement weather moved the season opener back a day against Clifton, but the delay didn’t bother West as the Trojans got two touchdown passes from Mason Tobola and manhandled a Clifton team that ended up playing two rounds deep into the playoffs. In its non-district finale, West was down 17-13 against Gatesville late in the fourth quarter. The Trojans drove 86 yards for the go-ahead score, a 1-yard touchdown run by Tobola, to cap a perfect non-district record. Heading into its final game of the regular season against Comanche, West controlled its own playoff destiny. But the Trojans lost on the road to the Indians and needed some help during their bye week and the final week of the regular season to make the playoffs. West needed a Glen Rose win over McGregor or Hillsboro to beat Comanche. Despite having a winning record for the first time since 2009, neither scenario panned out, and West was left out of the playoffs. Along with an experienced quarterback, seven starters return on an offense that should be even more explosive this season. West was perfect at home last season, but only won two games on the road, “We will have to be more consistent in all areas of the game,” said Woodard. “We will also have to be a better road team. Last year we were 5-0 at home, but only 2-3 on the road. Have to handle those challenges a lot better if we want to accomplish our goals.” After winning consistently for the first time in awhile last season, the goal for West this year is simple, make it to the postseason. “After last year, our expectations are really high,” said Woodard. “It was very disappointing to not make the playoffs last year. We have been working hard since football was over to accomplish our goal of being a playoff team.”
