SPIRITUAL SUMMONS
“Farewell, Old Year, with goodness crowned,
A divine hand has set my bound;
Welcome the New Year, which shall bring
Fresh blessings from my God and King.
The Old we leave without a tear,
the New we hail without a fear!” (Anonymous)
Anticipation of Christmas has encompassed our minds for
the past month or so. I hope you were not disappointed! Christ-
mas is so special to all of us in so many ways -- that’s the way the
“Divine Hand” planned it! Looking back to the blessings of God is
a good and wholesome thing. We cannot possibly know where
we’re going if we don’t know where we’ve been. After all, God IS
the God of history, of all that is past, as well as God of present and
yet-to-come!
During Christmastide (liturgical season/days immediately
after Christmas), we bathe in the spiritually warm breath of the new
Holy Baby. Therein lies a healing serenity and rejuvenation that on-
ly the God of the present can give!
Right around the corner is the New Year! Anticipation
springs anew, as we look forward to what the "Divine Hand" will
bring us! What’s in your imagination, your consciousness, sent
there by the God of the future? Are you getting excited about the
faith God has in you as you do His work? I hope you will take the
time to call or come by the office and share with me (not your reso-
lutions, which you probably won’t keep any better than I’ll keep
mine!) the divine inspirations you have for the coming year, and
what part you are going to play in making them come to life!
Every year, every day, even every minute, we come face to
face with God’s word, which says “Behold, I am doing a new thing,
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?!” (Isa 43:19) It’s our job
to try and keep up with Him! That’s the “race” God talks about (Heb
12) when He says to “run with patience the race that is set before
us...”

The question God has for us is this: Are you ready to run for God’s new race this year? It’s a
new race, set in a new time, with new challenges, new rewards! I find the prospect of this New Year
with you here at Hampstead UMC so exciting! New officers, new members, new building project,
new ministries -- God bless you for making it all happen for our Lord!
May the peace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with you all! (I’ll see you in church this
coming Sunday!)

CONFIRMATION CLASS : PARENTS: There is nothing more important than your child's
journey with Jesus Christ. If s/he is 12 or older and has never made a profession of faith, then it
would be most helpful if they would attend these classes. No kidding, we do a lot of work in 12
weeks, but it will be spirit-forming and fun! Once completed, there is no requirement for them to join-
- that will be their decision. But Confirmation Class is the essential foundation of that decision. (See
calendar note below for Set-Up meeting)

Please remember Lynn and Janet Toedt; Ed and Marian Dombrowski; Barbara Bird; Debbie Muso-
lino; Kelly Hinrichs; Jim Curinga. Please check the Sunday bulletin for a more detailed list.

BackPack Meals ~ MUNCH
We finished 2014 on several positive notes. Monetary donations were received from:
PPD, thanks to the efforts of one of our volunteers
The local Rotary Club
Alternative Gift Market
Additional individual donors
Many thanks to the preschool for the food they donated to help the program. For all others who do-
nate food items on a regular basis, we thank you as well! The reports back that I have heard from
school personnel say that we are making a difference in the lives of the children who might not have
enough food to eat once they leave school on Friday afternoon until they return on Monday morning.
Despite all the government food programs and other assistance, one in five children in this country
go to bed hungry! Please consider making some of the following items a donation to MUNCH, week-
ly or on some other regular basis that works for you. We’ll be sure it gets into the backpacks to be
taken home on Friday afternoon!
Cheerios, Oatmeal, or other low sugar cereals
Canned or plastic jar Pasta Sauce and dry Pasta (we can’t send glass containers home)
Canned Vegetables & Fruits, Individual Fruit Containers (low sugar/no refrigeration)
Plastic Jars of Peanut Butter and Jelly
Individual Packages of Peanut Butter Crackers, Cheese Crackers, Snack bars, etc.
Canned Meats (ham, tuna, chicken, meat spread)
Chicken and Tuna Helper (we combine these with the appropriate canned meat)
Hearty/Chunky Soups & Stews, Macaroni & Cheese
Canned Pastas (Spaghetti-O’s, Ravioli-O’s, etc.)
100% Fruit Juice (Cans or plastic bottles)
Monetary donations are always welcome. Checks made out to HUMC with “MUNCH” in the
memo field works!
“Reduced Sugar” and “Lower Sodium” are best! Please, NO glass containers.
Thanks for your support!

Preschool News
Last month we learned about being generous to others and
spreading “goodwill toward men” as we collected items and pre-
pared 40 gift bags for children in the Pender County Headstart
program. Thank you church family, friends and the HUMC Youth
for your generosity in helping us send Christmas cheer and joy to
some very deserving little ones. Our pre-K class was in charge of
the assembly process as they sorted, counted and stuffed the
bags. On each bag they placed a special tag that read “With
love from Hampstead United Methodist Church Preschool.” Our
hope is that every child who received a gift bag felt the love,
prayers and blessings that were sent their way.
This month’s curriculum topic is Nursery Rhymes. Our devo-
tion is about how God watches over us (Psalm 139) and our char-
actertopic is about how everyone’s feelings matter.
Registration for the 2015-2016 school year begins this month.
For more information please call 270-3388.
We wish you a very Happy New Year! May you and your
family be blessed and given the opportunity to be a blessing to
others this year.
Peace and prayers,
Judy Lane

Greetings from Queenie the Church Mouse!
I must be getting older as Gramps once told me that the older you get the faster time
goes. The month of December went entirely too fast as the church has been so busy I grow
concerned that the season of Advent and Christmas are being rushed. The Chrismon tree is
big, green, and beautiful and thankfully, came without critters hidden within its branches. It
was awesome to watch the Chrismon ornaments of white and gold being carefully selected
and hung on the tree during Hanging of the Greens, each representing a part of the life of Je-
sus. In two days the sanctuary was transformed into a beautiful spirit-filled celebration of the
coming of the Christ child. I love to watch the transformation as chairs are quickly moved
and stacked as the sanctuary becomes a fellowship hall. Luncheons, blood drives, pre-school
play time (when its cold outside for the little ones), UMW Luncheon, Youth Christmas Party,
all took place in the fellowship hall. The Older, Wiser, Lively, Seniors had a luscious cookie
and tea party and that topped off the “All You Can Eat Time” for this little mouse (rather not
so little mouse). I now need to go on that yearly diet and exercise program.
A highlight of the season is always the Cantata and the Night in Bethlehem. I have the
best seat in the house for the Cantata and enjoyed every note sung and played at all three ser-
vices. Let me share a funny memory as my brother Charlie ventured into the organ pipes at
Duke Chapel to see if he could hear the notes better! Honestly, it took him 6 months to get his
hearing back. He said it vibrated every bone in his little furry body. Grandma used her herb-
al therapy on him, and he was back to daredevil Charlie in no time.
If you recall last year, I stayed here at HUMC instead of visiting my family. This year
was different as I overheard a parishioner talking about going to Duke to visit her son for
Christmas. I packed my bags and on that Sunday just before she was leaving I managed to
jump into her purse and got comfortable in the tissues. We are always fortunate for ladies
handbags that are always full of tissues. She had stated to her friends that she would be there
for two weeks, so I knew she would attend two services meaning I had a way back. I love it
at HUMC but seeing family again was a blessing. In my absence, Hope the Cat and the field
mice took turns cleaning up any mess, especially mess that they might have made. All went
well and I arrived safely at Duke, celebrated Christmas with family, enjoyed home cooking
and got that soft purse ride home.
Now we find ourselves moving into the month of January. I look forward to the day
of Epiphany on January 6th as we hear the message of the Magi visiting the Christ child

Hampstead OWLS Older, Wiser, Lively Seniors
Attention, OWLS, and potential OWLS (50+ is only a benchmark) -
The OWLS of Hampstead UMC gathered in 2014 for a great year
of fun, fellowship, laughter, learning, and celebrating God’s love for us
and for others. Some of the highlights of the year….tried seated exercise
classes, learned about our labyrinth and Spirit Center, attended "Mama
Won't Fly" at the Sneads Ferry Community Theatre in which our own
Jan Makaryk played 3 different roles, explored Psalm 119, gathered at
The Kings Table for our 5th annual luncheon, and celebrated Christmas
with a traditional cookie swap and trip to Enchanted Airlie Gardens.
We are blessed at HUMC with a wonderful senior ministry and
will continue serving the needs of our flock of OWLS in 2015. To that
end, our first gathering of the year will be the 2nd Thursday, January
8th, from 10 am to noon in Rm 5/6. In the new year, we hope to set up a
parliament of sorts to lead our group with devotions and programs.
Four people have volunteered to lead January's gathering - thank you! A
planning calendar will be drawn up so all will get an opportunity to
share their ideas and gifts - there are wonderful experiences out there
just waiting to be brought forth!
Remember to keep watch over one another as God watches over
us all. May God continue to bless each and every one in the New Year.
—Jan Makaryk & Pastor Trudy

revealing him to all the world. Friends, January can be a month that we are busy putting away the decora-
tions, sweeping the last of the tinsel from under the tree. The weather can turn cold and dreary. January is
also a month of new beginnings as we look forward to great things in the year 2015 here at HUMC. I look
forward to a busy year as we all work with each other as the hands and feet of Christ, bringing the message of
God’s love to all who have ears to hear. Personally, my tiny mouse ears are anxious to here the message of
God’s grace and love. How about yours?
Let the love of Christ abide in your hearts,
Queenie the Church Mouse.

Spent out. What does that mean? Is it a phrase expressing fi-nances? Or mental and physical energy? In recent months I have been spent out, empty, bone tired. Not where I want to be. How do we get ‘spent out?’ Maybe more importantly, how do we move toward wholeness? Several steps have helped me move toward being more whole, more balanced. Step one for me was hearing Skip’s message several months ago: “Face reality. Express frustration. Accept it.” Simple? Not easy. Step two for me was recalling the modern definition of IN-SANITY: doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome. For me it meant: CHANGE what’s not working for me. Hmmm that reminds me of…
The Serenity Prayer Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.
Step three: change me. God and I can partner to move toward wholeness of body mind and spirit. I can find energy to do small things like:
· Light a candle and watch the Light. · Appreciate small things · Sing a few words · Sticky notes to remind me of blessings · Take time – to take care of me · Retreat – ½ day just for me
Keep finding God’s way for you. God wants wholeness, full-ness of life for you and me. What will you do to move from ‘spent out’ to full of life and reaching for joy? Be intentional: Accept reality. Pray for courage to change. Take responsibility. Be and do what God has called you to do. Lis-ten. God is talking. “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life…”1 “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd.” 2 “I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep…I will seek the lost, bring back the strayed, bind up the injured and strengthen the weak…”3 1: Deut. 30:19; 2: John 10:10-11; 3: Ezekiel 34: 15-16 In Christ we grow, Sandy Smith

Missions: Cape Fear Habitat
Begin the new year with donating your time on Saturday, January 31st to
paint the interior of the newest Habitat Home being built in Hampstead. The Mis-
sion of Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity is “Seeking to put God's love into action,
Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and
hope.” http://www.capefearhabitat.org/ is the web-site. Go to the volunteer tab
and click on the waiver link to print your release/waiver form. Bring completed
forms to the job-site on January 31, 2015 at 7:45 AM. Youth 14-18 years old must
be accompanied by an adult and have all forms signed by their parents. Please let
Peggy Harris know that you are planning to participate so that enough food will be
provided for your lunch. Email: [email protected] or sign the folder located in the
Narthex.
The home is located on Howard’s Landing Road. Turn onto Grandview at the
sign for Eagle’s Watch. Turn right onto Howard’s Landing Road (the dirt road to your
right). The home will be on your right. The work will stop at 3:00 PM unless it is
completed earlier. All supplies will be furnished unless you have your favorite paint-
ing tools you would like to bring.
Thank you to all persons who did their Christmas Shopping with donations to
our Missions at HUMC. A total of $1,785 will be used to provide food for school
backpack meals, Leap of Faith, and the community “Four C’s.” Youth will be able to
participate in Upward Soccer, and go to Appalachia to make homes warmer and
safer. Homes locally can be repaired through WARM and CERT. May you be blessed
by your sharing.

Appalachia Service Project
The HUMC ASP mission team will be traveling to Western NC the week
of July 12 -18, 2015. We have a total of 34 youth and adults attending this
year. ASP is a Christian youth-based mission project to help the people of
the Appalachia Region who are economically disadvantaged. ASP has
been described as a people ministry with a construction component. The
mission is to help improve the quality of life and to show the people of Ap-
palachia someone cares. Our next fundraiser will be the Shrove Tuesday
Pancake Dinner February 17, 2015. If you have questions or you are inter-
ested in supporting this mission you may contact John Harris, ASP coordi-
nator by email [email protected] or phone 910-270-4780.

United Methodist Men
The start of the Advent Season had us discussing what hope we found in
Advent as we enjoyed pancakes w/bacon AND sausage! Afterwards, thir-
teen of us headed to the home of Roger and Dee Stolk to assemble an ac-
cess ramp (see photo’s in a recent Monday Missive of Skip’s). What a joy it
was being the hands of God’s work: no drawings, no instructions, NO PROB-
LEM! Their daughter, Laura Kiyabu, was filled with praise and thankfulness
as was Dee, who was generously providing coffee for those in need. Our
enjoyment has now brought hope to them by making it easier and safer for
them to leave the house. As we enter into this new year, may we all be res-
olute in bringing that same kind of hope to others not just at Advent, but
throughout the year and in doing so, make God smile. Be a Blessing…

Leap of Faith
The Leap of Faith (LOF) Committee is continuing to serve our community with the food pantry.
As everyone knows, times have been difficult for many, and we continually appreciate food and/or
monetary contributions. Food items may be placed in the green Leap of Faith bin in the Narthex.
As a reminder, once each quarter is Leap of Faith Sunday. The next LOF Sunday is scheduled for
January 4th. Envelopes will be placed in the bulletin that Sunday, and all monetary contributions
will go directly toward stocking the pantry. Envelopes may be placed in the offertory plate during
the service.
We have had several individual donors of food. We are so grateful to all of those in the
Hampstead community who have donated food items so generously to Leap of Faith. Please con-
tinue to remember our community during the holiday season.
The basic non-perishable food items we serve our Hampstead community are:
Cereal, Breakfast Bars, Bisquick/Pancake Mix, Pancake Syrup, Single-Serve Packets
of Grits/Oatmeal, Canned Meat (Tuna Fish, Chicken, etc.), Soup, Canned Vegetables
& Fruits, Canned Pasta (Spaghetti-O’s, etc.), Macaroni & Cheese, Pasta Sauce & Pas-
ta, Chicken & Tuna Helper, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Plain Crackers (Saltines), Peanut
Butter Crackers, Cheese Crackers, Baby Food, Condiments (Ketchup, Mustard,
Mayo), Toilet Paper, Dry Dog & Cat Food
Optional items we serve our community are:
Toiletries (Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Shampoo, etc.), Paper Towels, Cleaning Sup-
plies, Any Non-Perishable Grocery Items Not Listed Above
Please contact John and Paulette Biles (270-3096) if you are interested in being on the LOF
Committee. At present, we have thirteen volunteers on the committee. Each volunteer is assigned
a week (Sunday thru Saturday) on a rotating schedule once every eleven weeks. The time of
day/evening that the volunteer distributes the food to the outdoor pantry is decided by the volun-
teer. What an easy and rewarding mission! Are any of you interested in joining this wonderful
mission?
Our volunteers are a special group of people, and we want to thank all of them for their ded-
ication. They are Hope Gibson, Betty Godwin, Patty Homa, Twila Jones, Joan Rinehold, Peggy
Rose, Cheryle Shaffer, Bonnie Smith, Nona Tiedge, Dottie Webb, Ginger Wells, and Ute Wolf.

January…....Time for reflection and beginning anew. Perhaps mak-
ing resolutions to be more focused on the right priorities. Remembering to
run the race of endurance, to “press toward the goal for the prize of the up-
ward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14) What would Jesus want
us to do? Where do I fit into His plan? Come join a circle….or start a new one…and see how Jesus is still
working in missions here and throughout the world..

Children’s Ministries
I would like to thank all who volunteered for Night In Bethlehem. What
an incredible ministry HUMC provides during the Christmas season
when everyone is stressed out to the point of forgetting the true mean-
ing of Christmas. Many hearts will be touched that evening and it is not
possible without the help of so many. Thank you to all volunteers!
Power Kids begins on January 14, 2015. I would like to express my
heart felt gratitude to the following people who provided dinners for the
children. Dee Colenda, Jaime Alberti, Mary Martin, Amy Farmer, Markus
and Sylvia Schmid, Dina and Alisha Wolf, Rhonda Reuter and Stephanie
Peterson. The New Year brings the need for more dinners! If you would
like to help us out and provide dinner one Wednesday evening we all
would truly appreciate it. Please sign up on the calendar provided in
the narthex. We so look forward seeing all of the children at Power in
2015!
Youth Ministries
The youth really pitched in during the Christmas season by donating
many items towards the Head Start gift bags as well as participating in
a Night in Bethlehem. Many were apprentices and citizens strolling the
dirt path and I would be amiss if I did not include the Beggars and Lep-
ers! How awesome it is to see so many youth working so hard to make
sure the experience was as authentic as we can make it. Thank you to
all of the youth—you are an amazing group of teenagers!
With that being said, the youth have appreciated the home cooked
meals people have provided on Thursday evenings. It is such a refresh-
ing break from pizza! So thank you to Skip Williams, Hiram and Kathy
Williams, Lisa Gibson, Angie Major, Robert and Dana Little, and Brandyn
Miller. Once again, if you feel as though you could provide dinner on
any given Thursday night, please sign up on the calendar provided in
the narthex.
The R.E.A.L. Youth meetings will begin on January 15, 2015, look for-
ward to seeing you all there!
