Educate Girls works in the rural areas of Rajasthan, India, where the female illiteracy rate is extremely high. This young girl was not allowed to attend school; instead she has to babysit her younger sister and tend to the family goats.

Nazia is 21 years old. She has been married for two years. Her husband’s family demanded a motorcycle as part of the dowry, for which her parents gave 50,000 rupees ($10,000). The husband decided this wasn’t enough and demanded a car, but the cost was more than Nazia’s parents could afford. One day when Nazia was riding with her displeased husband on the new motorcycle, he pushed her off. His intent was clearly to kill her and cover up the murder as a traffic accident. Nazia was seven months pregnant at the time.

After she survived the “accident,” her husband tricked Nazia into taking some medicine to help her recover. Instead of feeling better, however, she became ill and went to the hospital, where she delivered a stillborn child. After Nazia was discharged from the hospital (which required her husband to sign some papers) her husband left without her. Nazia has been living with her mother for the past five months. She wants a divorce and the return of her dowry. She broke into tears shortly after I photographed her.

Kala Raksha, a design school for tribal women, is the first institution of design for traditional artisans. Kala Raksha produces some of the most exquisitely hand-embroidered and appliquéd products made in Kutch. I have seen firsthand the work created here, and it is beautiful and heartfelt. The women use only natural fibers and dyes whenever possible, and their work bears the stamp of uniqueness and of well-crafted artistry that appeals to a discerning audience. The women I photographed with their work have the joyous obsession to create every day. They are proud of their work and are empowered by both maintaining their tradition and earning a decent livelihood.

I photographed Kuvarben working on a new piece. I was amazed how much fine work they can get accomplished in an hour!

Kala lives in a rural district of Rajasthan, India, where child marriage is widely practiced. To avoid payment of a dowry, she was married when she was three months old. Kala is now 13 years old and in the 7th grade.

Both her parents are manual laborers and were not at home when we visited. Kala will continue to live with her parents until she is ready to have children. She will then move to her husband’s home. I was not allowed to photograph her with her husband.

Kala had a certain elegance and brightness, and I could not help but feel saddened by the fact that her destiny was determined when she was only three months old.

In the Masai countryside of southern Kenya near the border of Tanzania, two young girls, Linet Sision and Sharon Nabulu read to each other after school. They are part of a program run by Il’laramatak Community Concerns (ICC), whose goal is to educate and empower Masai girls and encourage them to finish school rather than get married and have children when they enter their adolescent years.

The Kutch region in the state of Gujarat, India, is well known for the quality of its textiles. Young girls start sewing as soon as they can hold a needle.

An hour outside of Kaduna, Nigeria, the Bixby Girl Child Education Project works to improve access to education for girls in rural areas. For a few hours once a week, an instructor meets with these young girls in a mud-floored hut, where the girls take turns reading from a single text.

When the instructor brought out a single laptop computer, which seemed out of place amidst the water-drenched mud hut, all of the girls jostled with each other to get a view of the image on the screen.

Ruth is the 13-year-old daughter of Jane. They live in the Mukuru slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Ruth is a primary school student who was born and is living with HIV. She is being treated, and courtesy of the FANIKISHA program, she now understands the importance of adherence to her medication. She is in a support group that gives her the motivation to live as normal a life as possible. Her peers in class do not know that she is HIV positive—only the few that are in her support group. She is confident about her future, and the smile on her face attests to her unshaken optimism.

The series, entitled “The Romance of Discovery,” depicts exploration by land (“The Discoverer”), sea (“Beyond Uncharted Seas Columbus Finds a New World”), and air (“Through Pathless Skies to the North Pole”). Completing the series are these two stylized maps—“The Map of Discovery (Eastern Hemisphere)” shows the routes of some of the Western world’s most famous explorers, while on the “The Map of Discovery (Western Hemisphere),” Poseidon and a mermaid guard the seas. One of the most acclaimed American illustrators, N. C.
