CYTOZYME LABORATORIES 1 position Contact: Dr. Elizabeth Wozniak 1 month, at 4 hours/day 5 days/week, as continuous as possible.

For this internship, you will work with Dr. Elizabeth Wozniak, head of research and development at Cytozyme Laboratories, where they develop products to improve agricultural productivity. You will rotate through the various labs, which range in their activities from analytical chemistry to plant sciences to molecular biology. You might do quality control experiments or work with the plants on which they test their products. You will gain valuable experience in the lab setting, including working with equipment, following written procedures, and obeying lab-safety protocols. Comfort and familiarity in the chemistry lab will be a plus and will grant you more opportunities to perform higher-order operations. This internship will increase your experience with plant science, lab protocols, and apparatuses, as well as your understanding of chemistry’s real-world applications.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE DRUG DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT 1 position Contact: Dr. Michael Kay Minimum 10 hours per week for at least 4 weeks, with flexible scheduling. You might remember Dr. Kay (http://www.biochem.utah.edu/kay), a professor of biochemistry at the U, from the talk he gave at morning meeting about Ebola. Dr. Kay is an MD/PhD, which means he has attended both medical school and graduate school, so he can help you understand the differences between clinical and research medicine. He has generously offered to host an intern in his lab, where he conducts groundbreaking research to develop inhibitors against HIV and Ebola. Researchers in his lab also study the origin of life and are trying to synthesize a living cell from scratch. If you’re interested in biochemistry, specifically drug discovery research, and you’d like to further your lab skills and learn about careers in medical research, apply for this internship. Dr. Kay is open to the possibility of your extending your internship beyond the summer if you’re interested.

NATURAL SMILES DENTISTRY 1-2 positions Contact: Heidi Brickey 3 weeks during the summer, during the hours of Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5pm. Think you might want to pursue a career in dentistry? Take advantage of this opportunity! As an intern at Natural Smiles Dentistry, you will shadow Dr. Brickey or Dr. Provine; you may also shadow the hygienists. You will learn to perform tasks like sterilizing equipment, turning and stocking patient rooms, working in the lab pouring models and making bleach trays and mouth guards, and answering phones. NATURAL SCIENCES (continued)

UTAH ANIMAL CARE CENTER 1 position Contact: Dr. Pam Nichols July or August, two mornings per week.

The Utah Animal Care Center in Bountiful houses a veterinary clinic for dogs and cats as well as a rehab center for pain management and physical therapy. At this internship, you will assist the vets and techs at the Utah Animal Care Center. If you’re a dog or cat lover, you’ll enjoy learning to care for animals, and you’ll gain medical experience by helping with surgical prep, blood draws, dental cleanings, injections, and placing IV catheters. You’ll enjoy this internship more if you’re an outgoing self-starter and a good communicator. If a career in animal science or veterinary medicine interests you, this internship will help you pursue that goal.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY 1-2 positions Contacts: Drs. Dennis O’Rourke and Leslie Knapp 10 to 20 hours/week, between the end of June and the end of August. The Department of Anthropology at the University of Utah hosts top facilities for biological anthropological research. They use DNA and hormones to learn more about populations of humans and non-humans (primarily monkeys and great apes). They focus their research in the Americas and in Africa. The Department of Anthropology has an ancient DNA (aDNA) laboratory where they use genetics to understand population history in the past. Where did certain groups of people come from initially? Who did they interact with? How did they evolve and grow over time? Research is focused on human migrations in the North American Arctic, domestication of corn in the southwestern United States (your backyard!), and prey animal changes (elk and seals, for example) in response to human hunting. They also have a brand new evolutionary genetics laboratory where research is conducted on modern human and non-human populations, using DNA and hormones. There they ask similar questions: how did the population history and environments of the past lead to current diversity in present-day primates? How do genes influence health, reproductive success, and behavior? What can we learn about the evolution of primates by studying their DNA? How do hormones affect our behavior and the behavior of other primates? If you are interested in pursuing a career in the sciences, in laboratory work, in anthropology, or in medicine, this internship will interest you.

The new internship program is something I would definitely recommend! – Ling Ritter

The internship was fantastic! Honestly I absolutely loved everything I did; it was incredibly interesting. – Francesca Steiner

HUNTSMAN CANCER INSTITUTE 1-2 positions Contacts: Dr. Cornelia Ulrich and Dr. Jürgen Böhm Minimum commitment of one month, at 4-5 days/week and 6-8 hours/day. This internship at the prestigious Huntsman Cancer Institute is ideal for a student interested in medicine or medical research. The intern will work on the ColoCare Study, which is an epidemiological observational study that recruits newly diagnosed colorectal cancer patients. The study uses patient questionnaires as well as tissue, blood, urine, and stool samples to look for markers that might predict the recurrence of colorectal cancer, but it’s likely to enrich our knowledge about colorectal cancer on many fronts. As an intern, you might:

• prepare packages of materials to recruit and follow-up with patients • check the quality and completion of patient questionnaires • assist in the processes of patient recruitment and follow-up • enter patient data into their database • conduct research in scientific literature about colorectal cancer

In short, this is a fantastic opportunity for a student committed to pursuing studies in medicine.

TWIG MEDIA LAB 1-2 positions Contact: Christopher Lee 15-20 hours/week for at least a month, both in studio and at home TWIG Media lab is a production company / agency that produces a mixture of feature films, short documentaries, commercial work, and web videos. TWIG produces and edits films, many of them for arts organizations here in Salt Lake City. Daily routines are varied and exciting, from shooting films around town to editing in their studio on 6th West and 6th South. If you are awarded this internship, TWIG Media Lab will assign you a postproduction project that you will have the satisfaction of seeing to completion. Some film-editing experience and background is necessary to succeed at this internship, where you will learn various stages of post-production such as editing, color correction, visual effects, and others. You can expect to work from 15 to 20 hours per week for the month, some at home on your computer and some in the studio, and they may have more projects for you throughout the year if you’d like to continue. This is a fantastic learning opportunity for students interested in the arts, in film, and in sound and video work.

GLASS SCULPTURE AND ART 1 position Contact: Brian Usher Flexible scheduling. Mr. Usher is an artist specializing in glass sculpture (www.brianusher.com) with a studio here in Salt Lake. IHC is offering us two possible internships:

If you are interested in community relations or community gardens and you have a strong organizational sense and feel comfortable talking to hospital and community leaders to meet the needs of this project, this internship is for you.

As their intern, you will help research air quality and health, compiling your findings and assisting them in developing education materials.

IHC would be happy to mentor one student working on both projects, two students working on the projects individually, or two students who want to team up on both projects. Note that this project can only be done for Project 11 credit.
