Over the past year, Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Foundation provided critical philanthropic support made possible by our generous donors. As the new Vice President of Development for KentuckyOne Health, I’m humbled to learn how your gifts have literally changed and saved lives through advancement in treatments and technology.

Without your generous gifts, we couldn’t help patients like George Hatfield, who thought he wouldn’t survive chronic pancreatitis. But because of you, a rare pancreatectomy with islet cell auto-transplantation was performed on him at Jewish Hospital. This procedure is being performed at only a handful of facilities worldwide.

This is just one example of the power of medicine through innovation, research and exceptional clinical care that is bringing wellness, healing and hope to the communities we serve. And you are the fuel that allows KentuckyOne Health to empower healing hands to lift up those in need.

You’re also fueling the investments in technology and infrastructure, such as the expansion of the emergency department at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital – a facility that was built for half the current patient volume it now handles each year.

We hope you enjoy reading about these exciting breakthroughs and others—events that without you, would not have been possible. From the bottom of our hearts we sincerely thank you for your generosity and support as we look forward to another year of building a healthier Kentucky.

We Couldn’t Do This Without You,

Leslie Buddeke Smart, CFRE Division Vice President of Development KentuckyOne Health

Without You,There Wouldn’t Be a Life Saving Helipad.

For patients suffering a heart attack, awaiting a hand or organ transplant or in need of other types of critical care, minutes often matter.

Thanks to donors to the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation, patients can now be airlifted directly to Jewish Hospital and land on the Jack M. and Janis B. Klempner Family Helipad. The helipad allows critically ill patients greater access and reduced transport times for specialty care.

The $2.1 million project included the construction of a pedway connecting the helipad to the hospital’s cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs. This connection enables cardiac patients to be transported directly into the area to where they will receive care, bypassing the emergency department and saving valuable time.

Previously, patients airlifted to Jewish Hospital landed at University of Louisville Hospital and were then transported via ambulance.

“Decreasing the time for transport for these critically ill patients is truly a lifesaving investment, for our community and beyond,” said Mark Slaughter, MD, executive director of cardiovascular services for the KentuckyOne Health Louisville market, chair of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Louisville and member of UofL Physicians. “Outstanding outcomes with comprehensive services, including access to new treatments and technology help us continue to be the region’s leader in heart care.”

The naming of the helipad for the Klempner family recognizes the family’s contributions to air ambulance service dating back to the 1980s. Jack Klempner, a successful scrap-metal businessman, was the first chairman of the board of SKYCARE, Kentucky’s first hospital-based air ambulance service. Over the years, the Klempner family contributed to an endowment created to cover the cost of transporting indigent cases to the hospital.

In addition to the helipad, a $3.3 million project to renovate the cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology (EP) labs at Jewish Hospital will further strengthen the hospital’s existing STEMI Network. The network was established in 2013 and ensures the fastest access to life saving care for patients with a complete blockage of the coronary artery.

“The investments in the cath lab and EP lab allow physicians access to the latest technology which ultimately means better care for patients,” Slaughter said.

“Frazier Rehab is really a jewel,” said Kathy Mershon. 15 years ago, Merson suffered a debilitating stroke that left her without movement on most of her left side. But thanks to the Community Fitness and Wellness Center at Frazier Rehab Institute, Mershon regained her strength and mobility through seven years of outpatient therapy and rehab.

“It’s a resource that people in the community don’t fully understand and I want to make sure it continues. There’s no shortage in people who need it,” she said.

Originally designed for people with spinal cord injuries, the Community Fitness and Wellness Center program is now available to others with physical deficits. Now individuals have access to trained exercise physiologists who can help them learn to use state-of-the-art exercise equipment that is modified to fit their unique needs.

Mershon knows that without donations, her life would be completely different today. So Mershon and her husband, Dr. Todd Gardner, a physician with KentuckyOne Health, recently included the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation in their

estate. Their scholarhip gift of $10,000 will give future patients who couldn’t otherwise afford it, access to the Community Fitness and Wellness Center program.

Mershon still frequents the Community Fitness and Wellness gym and says the program creates a real community for everybody involved. “It’s a like a gigantic family. You know everyone there and spend time with them regularly. It’s amazing how much improvement I could see, not only in myself but in others that go there,” said Mershon.

It’s this feeling that caused Mershon to give back and why she encourages others to consider the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation in their planned giving.

“I want to see the work being done at Frazier Rehab set as a best practice for other hospitals in the CHI system across the country,” Mershon added. “I want to make sure the community knows it’s here and make sure it lasts.”

To learn how you can change lives like Mershon’s, contact the Foundation office at 502-584-4543 or visit kentuckyonehealth.org/giving.

Without You, We Couldn’t Change Teens Lives.

“It has been an answer to prayer. One of the best things that could have happened to us,” said mother Susan Greenrose of her son’s time in the Peace Promises Program.

Greenrose’s son participated in the program in Oldham County after an alcohol-related offense at school.

“My son was headed on a downward spiral and becoming a person I didn’t recognize,” she said. “Through the program, he became more cooperative, more respectful. This program is very educational, but more than that, it’s very personal…they love them through it.”

The Peace Promises Program is a school-based intensive outpatient program designed to provide teens with the tools they need to make healthy, drug-free choices. It also teaches them to think through their decisions, talk about their problems and develop a network of support.

Since it began in Oldham County in 2013, Peace Promises Intensive Outpatient Program

has expanded to Jefferson, Bullitt and Hardin counties. In the last year, 150 students have graduated from the program.

One in eight Kentucky high school students meet the criteria for a substance abuse disorder, according to the most recent report from the Substance Abuse Health and Mental Services Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which means there is still work to be done.

“It’s gratifying to know that this is not the end, but that it’s the beginning,” said Henry Fuqua, a certified alcohol and drug counselor. “We need to invest in these kids’ lives because tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us.”

The Peace Promise Program wouldn’t have been possible without a more than $1.5 million grant from the Kentucky Kids Recovery program made to the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation.

Dragan Petri shed tears as he wrote his family narrative for his scholarship application. His essay was a story of how a solider carrying a rifle banged on the door of Petri’s home and ordered them to leave. It was a story of how the family carried his epileptic grandmother for miles as they hiked to the safety of the Croatian border. And how his family of 10 stayed in a refugee camp for seven months before their reprieve to relocate was granted.

To this day, Petri’s mother still talks about the delicious chicken dinner they were served in New York City, during their first night in America in 1996. She also remembers how a four year old Petri, his siblings and cousins jumped on a hotel bed and watched TV until they fell asleep.

So when the 23 year old occupational therapy student at Spalding University was awarded the ninth annual Jeff and Phyllis Osbourn Scholarship during the 2015 MOSAIC Awards, he was thrilled. This $2,000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding new American pursuing a career in a high-demand health care field.

“I felt like everything we went through had paid off,” he said of the award. “That’s what I love about America. People here have opportunities to be what they want. They just have to go out there and do it and work hard.”

Petri graduated in March 2016 with his Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) from the Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy at Spalding University.

The Jeff and Phyllis Osbourn scholarship fund was established through a generous gift from Alice Bridges, Vice President for Healthy Communities for KentuckyOne Health. It honors her

parents, Jeff and Phyllis Osbourn and their volunteer service to the immigrant community through Catholic Charities. Over the years, this scholarship has grown with the support of family and friends including Phyllis who continues to make an annual gift.

The Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation scholarship program was designed to provide employees and future employees, who have a passion for healthcare and a drive to succeed with the means to pursue their educational dreams. We believe the key to a quality workforce is addressing the pervasive and crippling effects poverty plays in education. Hundreds of our current and future employees are testaments to this. Without generous gifts like this one, Dragan Petri’s educational dreams would have never come true.

Without You,Future Doctors Couldn’t Achieve Their Dreams.

Without You, Groundbreaking Surgeries Wouldn’t Be Possible.

The pain of chronic pancreatitis was excruciating for George Hatfield—until relief finally came after he underwent the first islet cell auto-transplantation performed in Kentucky.

“I didn’t have nothing. I gave up,” he said, of life before the surgery. Back then, he had to endure pain that felt like his ribs were being crushed and ripped out. He had even started to plan his funeral.

Hatfield moved to Kentucky from Tennessee specifically for the surgery that was made possible by an $800,000 grant from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence to the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation. Hatfield is one of just six people to undergo the surgery this year in Kentucky. The operation is only available at a handful of facilities around the world.

“Chronic pancreatitis is responsible for 56,000 admissions per year in the United States and 3,300 in Kentucky,” said Michael Hughes, Jr., who is a transplant surgeon at Jewish Hospital, an assistant professor of surgery at UofL and a surgeon with University of Louisville Physicians.

Chronic pancreatitis typically is treated with complete removal of the pancreas. But there are problems with this approach.

“Removal of the pancreas to cure pancreatitis also removes all insulin producing cells and therefore creates a very brittle form of diabetes,” said Dr. Hughes. “Patients trade one severe disease for another. However, islet auto transportation allows doctors to more safely remove the pancreas by returning the islets back to the patient and therefore preventing diabetes.”

The entire operation takes approximately 10 hours. Most patients who have had total pancreatectomy with islet auto-transplantation find a dramatic lessening of abdominal pain, reduction in the use of narcotic pain medicine and improved blood sugar control.

“After the surgery, I started feeling better and today, I feel great,” Hatfield said at a recent press event.

KentuckyOne Health is the only healthcare provider in the Commonwealth offering islet auto-transplantation, helping to drastically reduce the pain and suffering experienced by Kentuckians with the disease.

Would you believe that someday soon, lung cancer could be diagnosed by a simple breath analysis? Thanks in part to a gift from the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation, Dr. Michael Bousamra, Associate Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Louisville and Associate Professor with the University of Louisville School of Medicine, is leading a clinical trial at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center that could revolutionize lung cancer screenings.

A team of UofL clinicians and researchers have identified four cancer markers in breath that are elevated in patients with lung cancer.

The diagnostic process for patients is easy and inexpensive. They breathe into a one-liter plastic bag. Researchers then suck the breath

out of the bag onto a patented silicon microchip where the carbonyl compounds in the breath are analyzed under a microscope. The process is precise and quantifies the concentration of the compounds in the breath.

“The key is in the analysis of the compounds,” said Dr. Bousamra. “We have to find the best way to analyze these compounds quickly and inexpensively and that’s what the funding from the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation has helped us to do.”

Currently, a CT scan is most often used for lung cancer detection, though this method has two drawbacks compared with the proposed breath analysis method. First, CT scans subject the patient to repeated radiation. Secondly, they can lead to additional procedures, such as a biopsy, in order to rule out cancer, because benign lung nodules may be picked up on the scans.

Early research has already shown that this method of breath analysis is more accurate than a PET scan in differentiating lung cancer from benign lung nodules.

The local team which includes Victor van Berkel, MD, Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation at Jewish Hospital, Michael Nantz, PhD, Chairman, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Louisville and Xiao-an Fu, PhD, Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering, University of Louisville, hopes to have a multi-center trial in place next spring.

“This is potentially revolutionary technology for both lung cancer diagnosis and screening,” Dr. Bousamra said.

Without You,New Ways to Detect Lung Cancer Isn’t Possible.

Without You, Kids Wouldn’t Learn the Value of Eating Healthy.

Louisville grandmother Beverly Brown and her family’s lives have become healthier and happier, thanks to a special program that wouldn’t have been possible if not for a grant from the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation.

Brown’s grandson, Jeremiah, is one of the many students at Hazelwood Elementary whose families are benefitting from the Farm to Family Initiative, a collaboration between healthcare providers at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital and the Food Literacy Project. The program promotes healthy lifestyles for the prevention of childhood obesity among children 8-12 years old.

More than 35 percent of the student populations at Hazelwood and Wellington Elementary in Louisville are overweight or obese. Both schools are located in USDA-classified “food deserts,” or areas where residents face limited access to stores providing fresh vegetables and fruits.

The Farm to Family Initiative began in 2013 and has shown astounding results in its first 15 months:

• 41 percent of students now eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily (increased from 23 percent)• 91 percent of students engage in at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity (increased from 63 percent)

• 90 percent of students have eaten a vegetable they harvested or picked themselves (increased from 59 percent) • 93 percent of students know how to prepare a healthy recipe (increased from 63 percent)“[The program] increased my

knowledge on what to eat, how to eat and to eat good,” Brown said. “We sit down more often and we have conversations now. There was a time that everyone ate on their own and now we all work together in the kitchen and work together preparing the food.”

The Farm to Family Initiative is funded by a $200,000 grant from the Johnson & Johnson Community Health Care Program for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity and $25,000 from PNC Foundation to the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation.

8

“These early results show startling success for the young people engaged in this program—we’re making a real impact on their health,” said Alice Bridges, vice president of Healthy Communities, KentuckyOne Health. “It’s our hope that these successes will translate into long-term healthy habits for participants, ultimately creating a healthier community.”

When the roof started going up on the new emergency department (ED) expansion, the hospital staff at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, part of KentuckyOne Health, watched the progress with excitement.

“Just seeing any construction is a huge deal. It had been talked about for so long,” said Eric Fulcher, MD, an emergency room physician at the hospital. “You can get a good idea of where we’re headed and that’s had a positive impact on morale to say the least. People are optimistic. They see the change and are excited about it.”

The $9 million expansion to Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, the only acute care hospital serving Louisville’s South End, has now become very tangible for staff and the community. This past spring, emergency services moved into its new space, while renovation has now begun on the former ED. The full renovation and expansion project will be completed this fall.

When the dust settles, the construction will more than double the size of the ED and bring the bed count from 28 to 36. Modular walls, the ability to bring technology to patients’ bedside will improve overall workflow of the department and help decrease wait times.

“The new design will give us so much more flexibility and allow us to use our human resources so much better.” And will allow the staff to be

9

“much more nimble in managing the patient flow,” said Dr. Fulcher. The project was only possible because of funds from the Jewish

Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation and community donations.“It will be a more ideal situation,” Dr. Fulcher said. “The goal is to

provide an experience you would want a family member to have and now we’ll be able to provide it.”

Not only will the changes help people on an individual level, but they also boost community morale.

“It’s a sign to the community that the investment is being made and that we’re still looking out for their health and their interests.”

While the Ice Bucket Challenge was raising money and awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) around the world, a group of physicians and therapists right here in Louisville made significant breakthroughs in the care of ALS.

A generous gift of $100,000 from John McCarthy to the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation provided support for the Jane McCarthy Therapy Gym—named in memory of his mother. This lead gift provided additional support for the University of Louisville Physicians ALS Clinic.

Now this ALS Clinic has become part of a network of just 50 ALS Association Recognized Treatment Clinics across the country. The clinic meets the national standard of quality and works closely with the ALS Association to help people living with ALS, their families and to leave no stone unturned in the search for a cure. The ALS Clinic provides highly personalized, evidence-based care in a supportive and family-oriented atmosphere at Frazier Rehab Institute.

“You’re no longer a husband, wife, daughter or son. ALS changes things. You’re no longer just a couple, you become their caregiver,”

Without You,ALS Patients Would Go Without Advanced Care.

10

said Martin Brown, MD, who leads the University of Louisville Physicians ALS Clinic at Frazier Rehab Institute. “These patients have a finite amount of time left and my goal is to help these patients and their caregivers manage in the best way possible.”

“Though there is no cure for ALS, the therapies offered in this clinic help patients stave off disease progression and live more independently,” said Dr. Brown. “We try to anticipate the next steps in our patients’ lives and help make the accommodations they will need.”

Though a patient with ALS may not be able to maintain all functionality, therapy at the ALS Clinic can help with specific functions like eating, standing and speech. Without therapy, decline in functionality is more rapid.

In the first year of the ALS clinic, 30 patients were treated and worked with Dr. Brown and a team that includes a neurologist, speech therapist, PT/OT, respiratory therapist and counselor/psychologist. Clinic days are currently held twice per month, appointments last around three hours so patients can see each team member in one day.

While the therapies offered at the clinics are cutting-edge, research is the key to fighting ALS in the long term. So in 2014, the ALS Clinic also launched an ALS research program to help determine how the disease starts and why it progresses.
