2015 gis colorado track: migrating the city’s intranet to geocortex by bruce reagan
TRANSCRIPT
Bruce Reagan Associate GIS Developer
City and County of Denver
Award winning (Allan Glen) In use since 2006 Built on ArcIMS Numerous plug ins Used daily by 200+ users
ArcIMS unsupported Some limitations –
Couldn’t change symbology Couldn’t save projects Device dependent (pc only) Change base maps Consume outside services Couldn’t add data (shapefiles, spreadsheets etc)
Investigating how previous app was being used
Customer feedback Goal: ◦ Make sure everything necessary was available
before shutting down LVM
We couldn’t lose any functionality. But what functionality was really being used? Vision: Small Focused Applications
Interviewed 12 major groups and over 200 users
Looked at logs of layer usage (over 700 layers) and tried to identify users for each layer

One thing we found is that some people used it
like ArcView largely because of the dreaded ! Essentially just browsing data Small focused applications - NOT!
Address / parcel lookup Document search Parcel comparisons Reverse address lookup Normal GIS functions – Identify, select, query
etc.
Multiple viewers Allows user groups to customize ◦ Parks ◦ Community Planning ◦ Public Words ◦ Assessment ◦ General viewer

In addition to new viewers each viewer could have multiple themes, customized to each groups ‘startup’ parameters.
Reduced the number of sites we had to create
Built on Windows Workflow Foundation. We have created about 10 to do common
tasks. Some workflows are secured using Windows
Authentication (street sweeping, parcel comparables)
Very useful….. HOWEVER….
Very positive Of course, they focus on the things it is not
Missing one workflow
Publishing 500 feature classes in 70 services 4 Clustered AGS servers 2 Web Servers Implementing F5 caused a delay of about 4 months
HTML5 Viewer! Additional, smaller, focused viewers
(Emergency Management) Mobile platform
MANAGE EXPECTATIONS! Really find out what is being used and by who The Server calculation spreadsheet is more
like guidelines. More customer outreach / increase awareness
If starting from scratch, start small and build
up.
