The Friends have been a vital part of the CRRL’s success since the very beginning. Even before the Central Rappahannock Regional Library was established in 1969, the Friends of the Library were dedicated to bringing a regional library to the area. Recently retired Library Director Donna Cote and long-serving trustee Frank Tobin were instrumental in

helping interested library users to launch the Friends of the Library once the library was established. Thanks to their efforts, and those of our founding Friends members, the Friends organization was established on July 6, 1973. The goals were and remain to raise funds to enhance the services of the CRRL, to focus public attention on the library, and to support the library in developing library services and facilities for the region.

This year, the Friends are honoring three long-time founding members who are retiring from their Friends work this year.

    From the DirectorDear Friends,

As you know, 2015 has been a year of transition for the Central Rappahannock Regional Library. Our long-time and beloved library director, Donna Cote, retired after 44 years with the CRRL and 34 years as director. Donna oversaw the growth of the CRRL from the former Lafayette School in Fredericksburg and a storefront in Colonial Beach, to the library system we have today with nine brand-new or renovated buildings that serve over 300,000 people. Under her leadership, the CRRL has established vital community partnerships that ensure we are recognized as a resource for lifelong learning, a destination for artistic enrichment, and a welcoming community meeting center.

As you will see on page 9, the Friends are honoring Donna and her years of service to the CRRL with a new membership category. The Cote Society will honor Donna’s contribution to the library and the community by giving the Friends the opportunity to make an even more generous donation to the organization that does so much to support the library. Please consider making a donation at the Cote level this year.

In 2015, your generous contributions made it possible for the library to enhance our programs and services. Listed below are just a few examples. So much of what we do depends on our loyal Friends of the Library. On behalf of the library staff and the entire community, thank you!

  • The “Infinite Universe” is More Limited Than Previously Thought

They taught me the solar system as a little kid.The boys in my class wanted to be like Mars:Strong, fierce, good at fighting.Mars is a boy planet, my teacher made that clear,And so are most of the others. They taught me the solar system as a little kid. There were only two girl planets.I guess; I mean, they called one “Mother Earth.”She is fertile and she takes care of her tenants.Earth is a good hostess. We wanted to be Earth. They taught me the solar system as a little kid. They said, “Venus is named after the goddess of beauty.”Venus is a girl planet. We wanted to be Venus.Well, we didn’t have a lot to choose from. The boys wanted to have powers over the seasAnd the stars, and the heavens, and the underworld. And they wanted to be swift and strong and battle ready. And the girls wanted to be beautiful and motherly and loving. They taught us to be the Earth.

Friends continue to support the popular Music on the Steps program which attracted close to 3,000 friends and neighbors every week from June to August. This year’s series culminated in a packed house at James Monroe High School for a memorable concert by Fredericksburg favorite Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra.

This year’s Uniquely Fredericksburg was a rousing success!

The Teen Poetry Contest and the Teen Art Show attract entries from high school students throughout the region each year. Each contest is judged by local professionals, adding to the cachet of winning. The receptions and awards are graciously provided by the Friends.

    Stafford Chapter

The Friends are big supporters of the vegetable beds at the library that benefit the S.E.R.V.E food pantry. Thanks to an Eagle Scout candidate, the Falls Run Master Gardeners, and interested staff, 183 pounds of tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash and bell peppers were donated to the S.E.R.V.E. food pantry last summer.

The 5th Annual Library Blossoms Plant Sale in May sold out all 110 hanging baskets of fresh flowers before 11:00 a.m., and the monthly book sales continue to be popular.

The Stafford Friends also funded author and artist receptions this year, as well as the 5th Anniversary Celebration of the England Run opening.

The Friends supported the popular “After Party” for Teen Read Week.

Summer Reading Club support includes performers as well as prizes and books for all ages, plus the Library Fun Fests that mark the finale of the summer reading clubs.

Soil and supplies for the Grow for Your Neighbor Garden helped the Salem Church vegetable garden to produce 626 lbs. of fresh, organic produce for the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank.

New shelving and cabinets for staff work areas helped make the behind the scenes areas much more efficient.

In addition to helping to support Snow Library’s summer reading activities, including performers and the end-of-summer Library Fun Fest, the Friends fund seasonal plantings outside the library’s doors.

The year-round booksale at Snow continues to be a popular fundraiser for the Friends.

This summer, all the library branches enjoyed performances for children in conjunction with the ever-popular Summer Reading Clubs. “Superhero Magic!” with Joe Romano, who has performed for CRRL audiences before, was a big hit. This year Joe’s fun and dynamic show combined books, magic, and superheroes to go along with the Summer

    Reading Club theme.

In July, school-age children enjoyed presentations of “A View from the Top” by The Wildlife Center of Virginia. The

children saw live birds of prey and learned how the “superpowers” of these magnificent

    predators make them successful hunters.

The Friends also supported the appearance of Paul Merklein. This entertaining cartoonist allowed teens at all three branches to discover, develop and practice their own cartooning skills.

Montross’s ever-popular book group is enjoying the new folding chairs that the Friends purchased for them.

Newton Branch is very proud of the landscaping around the library. Friends’ support of the service that maintains those plantings is very much appreciated by staff and the public.

Thanks to the purchase of folding tables for each branch, Westmoreland can participate even more in community events.

All the little extras that the Friends provide make these Westmoreland branches be the charming libraries that their customers love so very much.

  • Friends of the Library 20159

At the Friends of the Library annual meeting in October, President of the Friends Larry Towne announced several exciting new features.

ONLINe MeMBeRSHIPS In December the Friends are launching a new website, crrlfriends.org, which will for the first time allow Friends to join, renew, and donate online! Look for an email from the Friends inviting you to renew your membership online. If you prefer to join, renew, or donate without going online, please use the form on the back cover of this magazine.

COTe SOCIeTy The Friends have approved a new dues level that goes into effect immediately. Dues are now set at: $10 .......................... Individual $20 ................................Family $25 .................... Tobin Society $50 ................ Wallace Society $100 ....................Cote Society

In honor of Donna Cote, who retired as director this fall after thirty-four years, the Friends have designated a new level of giving. The Cote Society at the $100 level will join the Tobin and Wallace Societies in giving Friends the opportunity to honor these beloved contributors to the Friends and the Library. Please consider making your gift at the Cote level this year.

    Give to the library

Your gift to the Library will help us serve our community above and beyond what tax-based funding provides. Your gift will make a difference in the lives of others and help build a stronger community for all. Donate online at the Donate page on the new Friends website at crrlfriends.org/donate, or send a check payable to The Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 201, Fredericksburg, VA 22404.

    Why Give:

A gift to the librAry is A gift to everyone!

Make a year-end Gift A gift made to the Friends before December 31 may be used as a charitable donation. Gifts made to the Friends comply with IRS requirements for tax deductibility.

Give in Memory or in Honor Give in memory of someone who has passed away, or in honor of someone.

Make a Gift with Appreciated Stock or Securities in a Mutual Fund You can use assets from successful invest-ments, without losing a substantial portion of your earnings to the capital gains tax.

Make an In-Kind Gift The CRRL accepts donations of goods and services from both individuals and businesses. A real estate gift usually entitles you to a tax deduction from the appraised value, and in most cases you will not have to pay a capital gains tax.
