Christa McAuliffe and the Challenger Legacy: 30 Years and Counting

Thirty years ago on January 28, 1986 the world watched as Christa Corrigan McAuliffe, Class of 1970, was to make history as the first teacher in space.

Only five months before she was chosen from over 11,000 applicants to be the first U.S. citizen to join our astronauts in space. She proposed to give lessons and keep a journal of the “ultimate field trip.” She credited her inspiration for journal writing to Framingham State professor A. Carolla Haglund. As she underwent training for her space adventure, she became THE hot personality who the media chased. National and international magazines and newspapers all covered her. She was on TV, including the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. She enthusiastically talked about teaching and teachers and the importance of the profession. She inspired students by pointing out that she, as an ordinary person was getting to do something extraordinary, and that they could too.

“Imagine me teaching from space, all over the world, touching so many people’s lives. That’s a teacher’s dream!... Imagine a history teacher making history!” Out of tragedy came inspiration for students, teachers, and the world, as Challenger Centers were established and scholarships, awards, and conferences sprung from the spirit and mission of Christa and her fellow crew members. Countless schools, parks, monuments, and other enduring memorials provide lasting reminders of their dedication and heroic endeavors. It is only fitting that we honor Christa this year with a special program during our annual meeting Saturday, June 4th at 9:30 a.m. at Alumni House. Our featured speaker will be Mary Kenney Liscombe ’70, Christa’s friend and classmate and Director of the Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Center Emerita, who will talk about Christa’s legacy. President’s LetterDear Fellow Alumni,

As I write this letter, I am enjoying a beautiful spring like day in February. While I cannot predict that this weather will prevail when you read this, I am able to say with certainty that the past successes of IAFSA will continue.

IAFSA prevails with financial support for students and the faculty. We are pleased to share that we provided over $76,000 in scholarships and $8,000 in no-interest loans this past year. We are extremely grateful for the continued support of our loyal alumni.

I wish to thank the IAFSA board again for all the time and energy that they happily devote to assure the continued success of our endeavors. We see our board growing and are proud to welcome three new members this year; Paula Donahue ’96, Kathleen Hursen ’88 and Jenna Jaara ’15.

Paula Donahue ’96, RN BSN, also graduated from Boston Children’s Hospital and worked in the Pediatric Orthopedic department for 30 years. Her positions included staff nursing and then Nurse Manager of the Orthopedic Clinical unit. She is excited to become part of the FSU community again. Paula is now retired and enjoying life with her children and grandchildren.

Kathleen Hursen graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and earned her BSN at FSU in 1988. She continued her education at U Mass Medical Center Graduate School receiving an MS in Nursing Management and Administration. Kathy’s career included Public Health Nursing in Boston and Framingham. Her most recent role was Director of Education and Training for the Massachusetts Division of TB Prevention and Control from 1996 to 2011. Kathy, like Paula, has retired from this position and is learning to “slow down” while spending time with her son Patrick and his wife Brianna.

Jenna Jaara, a 2015 graduate, is our youngest Board member. She was a Food and Nutrition major and an IAFSA scholarship recipient. Jenna works for Nutriclick, a technology-driven health and wellness products company headquartered in Boston.

We invite those who would like to join our board to contact any one of our Board

members or submit a letter of interest and application to the IAFSA office. This past year has been another one to celebrate. As you may be aware, in 2014 your donations purchased a carillon in the Ecumenical Center (Chapel). This year a new sound system was added to the Chapel, again through the generosity of alumni donations. Our Annual “Holiday Card Addressing Party” on November 30 mixed fun with volunteering. Almost two dozen alumni addressed cards to older alumni, chatting, noshing, and reminiscing with old and new friends. Volunteers came and went throughout the morning. The cards are provided by the Amelia Davis Committee as part of their outreach to alumni. In February 2016, IAFSA and FSU’s Alumni Relations Department co-hosted an event for couples who met while attending Framingham State and later married. It was an evening of reminiscences about relationships that began here among then college co-eds who chose to make their friendship permanent. A stellar education at Framingham State remains the common bond among all those attended. How wonderful to know that lasting relationships were founded in the hallowed hallways of Hemenway or May or perhaps over a cup of coffee in the cafeteria. This year will mark the thirtieth year of the anniversary of the Challenger in which our alumna, Christa Corrigan McAuliffe ’70, perished. In 1986 Framingham State created the Christa McAuliffe Center for Educational Excellence. Now named The Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Center for Integrated Science Learning, it incorporates a Challenger Learning Center and the FSU Planetarium and offers educator resources and events for the general public. On a personal note, Christa and I were friends. She and I were employed at Quality Cleaners on Union Avenue in Framingham. She was at Marian High School and I was at Framingham South High School. We would work afternoons when school was over. She was a happy and kind person. We enjoyed one another’s company and shared the daily drama of our lives. She talked about her

aspiration of becoming a teacher. Who would believe that she would become the first teacher in space and leave such a legacy? I am proud to say she was my friend. This year our Annual Meeting will again be during Alumni Weekend and

held at The Alumni House, Adams Road on Saturday, June 4 at 9:30 a.m. Mary Liscombe ’70, Christa’s classmate and friend, will speak about Christa and her legacy and a new exhibit about Christa will debut. Thank you for your continued interest and support. It is thanks to you that IAFSA is still serving alumni and the Framingham State Community after humble beginnings over 141 years ago. As the president of the IAFSA board I invite you to come back to visit Alumni House and reminisce as you enjoy our exhibits of memorabilia and browse through our yearbooks. Bring a bag lunch and meet your classmates here. We will make coffee! But particularly, do join us on Alumni Weekend. If you can’t join us physically, do keep in touch by mail and email with your life highlights. And visit us online at alumnihouse.org, facebook.com/iafsa.alumnihouse, and @alumnihouse.org to see and share what IAFSA and fellow alumni are doing.

Sincerely,

Anne Ferrari-Greenberg Class of 1997

The Amelia Davis Fund Report Still helping after 105 years

The Amelia Davis Fund was established in 1910 by members of the Class of 1892 to honor their former math teacher who taught at Framingham State for 46 years. As noted in an appeal in 1919, it was “founded…chiefly to relieve the necessities of such of the Alumnae of the State Normal School at Framingham as, having faithfully worked as teachers for salaries totally inadequate to the service rendered, found themselves in old age unable to support themselves without financial aid.” It has been amended to provide help to any alum who is in need of financial aid.

Who was Amelia Davis and why did this class honor her in such a profound way? Some of the answers were found by Executive Director Debbie Cleveland in the archives of the Alumni House, including handwritten documents by Henry Whittemore, Principal of the Normal School 1898-1917 and former class members who spoke at her memorial service in 1922.

Here are some of their comments: “... the predominant element in character was her remarkable sense of justice…she examined her rating of student’s standing and her personal attitude towards her work with almost superhuman scrutiny...there was no element of chance in her decisions. This characteristic her life needs to have on your part, especially of you who are teachers the utmost attention.” Henry Whittemore.

A former pupil wrote, “The death of Miss Amelia Davis…brought sorrow to hundreds of her former pupils…Her skill and patience were never failing and she possessed in an unusual degree the ability to deal with her pupils justly and impartially…Life has been richer to many for knowing her.”

And finally, Mabel Dockendorff Clarke Class of 1909 wrote, “In her classroom, her presence inspired. Here was order, system, definiteness. Here we would learn of truth, not only in arithmetic; here we would be expected to live it as best we might…It was her ambition that each girl might find her true self and living to the truth, develop to her utmost possibilities.” These words show us the impact that one person can have on a community. We are honored that the Amelia Davis Fund continues to support seven of our disabled and needy alum with monthly stipends, underwrites the cost of sending holiday greetings to members of the 50 year Celebrating Class and back, and supports a group of volunteers who write monthly to alumni who are in need of a friendly note. With your donations to this fund, we can continue the mission set up by the Class of 1892: to honor Amelia Davis for her generosity of spirit and her caring of those she so inspired in her classroom.

Still helping after 105 years

With the support and philanthropy of alumni and friends, IAFSA continues to fulfill its mission with abiding affection for Framingham State that helped make us all what we are in the world today. Each year we find ways to work with faculty and the administration for the benefit of the students and the University Community at large:- Our scholarships and loans help fill the financial gaps

for dozens of students. - Our restricted funds help provide such things as a

new sound system for the Ecumenical Center and a contribution to the new RAM sculpture to be installed this spring.

- Alumni House provides a comfortable gathering place for faculty meetings and gatherings as well as award ceremonies.

- Help students through scholarships and no-interest loans. (In 2015 student fees rose about $380.) - Assist alumni in need through the Amelia Davis Fund for Incapacitated Alumni. - Contribute to the maintenance of Alumni House, built circa 1917, for alumni, student, and faculty

gatherings and the IAFSA office. - Preserve alumni and Framingham State archives dating back to the first students in 1839. - Volunteer once or ongoing according to your own schedule. Pick your projects or time commitment.

Your generosity has provided:~ $76,364 in scholarship aid to 77 students* for the 2015-2016

academic year ~ $8,000 in interest-free loans to 5 students* in the 2015-2016

academic year (with 23 loans currently outstanding for a total amount of $33,938)

~$2,300 in awards to 8 individuals* during 2015 ~$9,100 in assistance to 7 alumni during 2015

Student Loan Opportunities from Ellen Hyde Fund“Receiving the Ellen Hyde Loan has helped me tremendously, especially because I recently switched majors to better suit my career path. Because I am a full-time student, it is difficult to work as much as I need to pay for courses. This loan has helped me continue to receive the education that I need to better myself as a person and future teacher.”

~ Elizabeth McAvoy ’17, Elementary Education Major The Ellen Hyde No-Interest Loan

Program is another example of how forward-thinking our predecessors were. Imagine that 118 years ago they came up with the concept of not only starting a student loan program, but that it would be interest-free.

Ellen Hyde was a graduate of the Class of 1862 and taught at the school until 1875. Thirteen years after graduation, Ellen Hyde became the principal of the Normal School. Knowing first-hand how many students at the Normal School were struggling to pay their tuition, Ellen Hyde advocated for a special fund to help them. The Framingham Alumnae Association, now IAFSA, established the fund to honor her as an outstanding educator when she retired in 1898. It began with contributions totaling $266.

From modest beginnings the fund has grown enough to support more and more

undergraduate and most recently, graduate students. We decided to do a little research as far as the Fund’s impact. Thanks to your generosity, over 100 students received loans from 1996 to spring 2016. Currently there are 12 students who have graduated in the last three years and are repaying loans and nine recipients still in school. Repayment begins 90 days after graduation at $50.00 per month until repaid.

Loans of up to $2000 are made to qualifying students each semester, and with rising student fees, can make all the difference to a student stretching to meet college expenses. Contributions earmarked for the Ellen Hyde Fund are always welcomed. They will lead to more students able to achieve their career goals with a degree from Framingham State.

~ Gloria M. Aspesi ’57 G ’62 Ellen Hyde Fund Chair

“Growing up in a one parent household has been an ongoing financial struggle, but with the help of the loan it is able to provide my family with fewer problems and more rewards.”

~ Sarah Strike ’17, Psychology Major

Alumni House ReportIn about 300 days your Alumni House will be 100 years old! We are excited to

be celebrating this warm home that stands proudly as the home of the Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni. We bought it in 1971 and we continue to make improvements to our House! Our Alumni Office has moved back to a larger room on the second floor. Its previous room needs a makeover. Once done, we are considering different ideas to make it a resource for current students as well as alumni. We have broken through the closet from the larger office into “Norah’s Room”, nicknamed for the late beloved housekeeper Norah Gibbons. This makes Norah’s Room user friendly and easier to access while providing

We are establishing “The Friends of Alumni House” specifically for Alumni to support the House by volunteering or directing their donations for maintenance of the House and grounds. Being almost 100 years old, the windows are original and the storms are old and inefficient. There are about 55 windows and a great expense to replace, but needed!! Donations to the Friends of the Alumni House can offset this expense. The basement also has water periodically seeping in and that problem also needs to be addressed. Our yearly maintenance includes landscaping, window cleaning, rug cleaning, new thermostats, house cleaning, furnishings, repairs and maintenance, supplies, house insurance, gas, water and sewer. Many things are going on here at 42 Adams Road!! We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting and during our Alumni Weekend Open House. And remember, you can have celebrations at your Alumni House too! Come for a visit soon. ~ Kathaleen Flynn Patterson ’74 House Chair

You are invited to become a Friend of Alumni House! In 1971 IAFSA purchased Alumni House for the use of alumni, students, and the Framingham State Community. Reunions, annual meetings, scholarship receptions, faculty meetings, Framingham State classes and ceremonies, and family celebrations have taken place within its walls. Alumni House also houses IAFSA’s archives dating back to 1839 which are used by alumni, authors, students and families researching their

relatives. Our yearbook collection provides nostalgic glimpses into campus life of the past. IAFSA’s office is located on the second floor where its staff serves alumni, manages alumni records and archives, and administers over 25 scholarships and awards. Alumni House will be 100 years old in 2017. Thanks to past support, IAFSA has been able to keep up with most basic repairs

and maintenance, but the wiring and plumbing are feeling their age and need upgrades. Windows and stucco also need replacing. Donations have not kept pace with expenses. Join us in getting the house ready for a Centennial Celebration with a gift for needed repairs or by becoming a charter member of the Friends.

another exit from the second floor. It is being readied for use for volunteer projects, such as researching and documenting photos in our archives, transcribing early journals, and sorting and updating our alumni files. Through a MassSave/Eversource Energy Saving Program the interior and exterior light fixtures and bulbs were replaced with more efficient ones. MassSave also suggested replacing wiring and installing new insulation on the third floor and attic. These projects are more complicated and costly. We may have information about them by the Annual Meeting. The slate roof needed significant work due to the ice dams of the Feb/March winter of 2015. Roofers installed ice and water shields along the entire front upper roof, two new 18” copper valleys on the front of the house and copper liners inside the wood gutters at the front of the building and covered the fascia with copper liner. They installed rubber roofs on the back 3 dormers. In addition the roofers replaced 36 missing/damaged slates at $25 per slate!!

Announcing a new exhibit: Christa Corrigan McAuliffe ’70:

Teacher, Astronaut, Hero

irty years ago a high school social studies teacher and mother of two captured the hearts of the world

as she enthusiastically embraced the opportunity for a non-astronaut to ride into space. At the same

time, she lied the teaching profession to a new level and inspired educators of the future. A media

sensation for ve months of training and preparation for the shule launch, no one could have predicted

the impact she and her crewmates and their families would have aer tragedy struck. Almost 50 Challenger Centers promote the sciences and excite

budding young scientists and explorers. In tribute to Christa and her legacy, a special exhibit based

on IAFSA’s archives will open at Alumni House on Alumni Weekend and run through December 2016.
