Note of Appreciation
NGAGE New Mexico currently serves as a “backbone organization’ on a county-wide initiative on education. This initiative is primarily funded through the W.K. Kellogg foundation. NGAGE is grateful to the W.K. Kellogg foundation for their continued support of the education initiative. We are also grateful to the many organizations, community leaders, administrators, teachers, child care providers, and parents who have participated in ongoing conversations that have led to this Education Landscape Directory for Doña Ana County.
The directory includes the names of schools, organizations and programs connected to education in Doña Ana County. Please help us to update this directory by sending names of organizations and programs that should be included in the directory. It is our hope that this directory serves as a resource and tool to further assist people who work with our children and youth and are connected to their educational success.
With sincere appreciation,

started as a 2-Star Daycare Center in 2007. Today,
it is formally a 4-Star FOCUS pilot project
(previously known as AIM HIGH) and now a Pre-
Kinder Program. Its history dates back to early 2000
when a group of women were interested in
creating an economic development facility and
childcare center that would benefit the residents of
Chaparral. While we have had many challenges, we
have learned a lot in the last eight years and the
Center has evolved to meet the original goals of
providing much needed services in Chaparral as
well as a source of employment.

Since its inauguration in fiscal year 1967, the
Migrant Education Program has expanded to
encompass 49 states and Puerto Rico, serving
approximately 800,000 children with appropriate
funding. The money goes to state educational
agencies, which in turn assess needs and then
makes allocations to local school districts or other
eligible applicants serving migrant children. Each
year?s enrollment is based on a formula that takes
into account the number of migrant children
identified in the state and the per pupil
expenditures.
The Migrant Education Program concentrates on
identifying and meeting the specific needs of
migrant children. Continuity of instruction is a top
priority with a special focus on the individual
educational and health problems of each migrant
child. The program also offers tutorial services for
migrant children who are in need academically with
an emphasis in language arts and math.
?Migrant student? is defined as a child who has
moved from one school district to another during
the past three years with a parent or guardian who
was seeking or acquiring employment in
agriculture, related food processing activities
and/or fishing. A student meeting these
requirements, with the concurrence of his parents
or guardians, may receive benefits from the
Migrant Program for a period of three years.
In compliance with Improving America?s Schools
Act, the Las Cruces Public School District
systematically identifies and serves eligible migrant
students.

The Women?s Intercultural Center utilizes a
programming structure that interweaves leadership
development within a three (3) pronged
programming approach: Education & Personal
Development, Economic Self-Sufficiency, and
Consciousness-Raising for Change. Additionally, the
Center works with local, state, regional and
national organizations and agencies to provide
special services, trainings and workshops that help
meet the individual needs of our participants and
the needs of the communities of Southern NM and
West TX. Each approach reinforces and
complements the other to educate, empower and
engage women, a process we call WINGS (Women
Interweaving Needs and Goals for Success).

successful programs, SNM SEMAA (Southern New

programs that will increase interest and
engagement in and understanding of STEM

The members of the American Institute of Chemical
Engineers (AiChE) at NMSU are dedicated to
developing the interests of the community youth to
enter college and the STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. By visiting
schools, putting on science demonstrations, and
interacting with students, AiChE members share
their passions and inspire the youth to express their
passions. The science demonstrations range from
hands-on experiments, like making ?slime?, to the
visual demonstrations such as ?Dragon?s breath?.
Demonstrations spark the interests of students to
understand why and how things in everyday life
occur from the scientific perspective.

Larissa Lury (Program Leader)
http://www.nmsutheatre.com/asctc.php
For over 29 years, NMSU Theatre Arts has provided
exceptional children's theatre programming
through our American Southwest Children's
Theatre Company program (formerly Children's
Theatre Workshop). This after-school program is
based on the theory of creative dramatics: children
learning life skills--collaboration, creativity,
expression, cooperation and trust--while creating a
theatre piece of their own devising.
Our program is team-taught by nationally-
renowned director Larissa Lury supported by a
cadre of education majors enrolled in New Mexico
State University's elementary education program.
It is intended for students in first through sixth
grade.
We believe that great programming can also be
affordable: our workshop is only $25 for five weeks
of classes! We will offer two five week sessions
throughout the academic year: October-November
and March-April.
Every child deserves arts education. They deserve
a chance to develop life skills in a safe and fun
environment. American Southwest Children's
Theatre Company provides that and so much more!

The Borderlands Center for Educational Studies
(BoCES) at New Mexico State University (NMSU)
supports family/parent, youth, and
teacher/administrator leadership development and
civic engagement with a critical perspective on
policies and practices that impact children and
youth. We utilize three major strategies to
accomplish our work: community engagement,
research, and policy analysis. Currently our major
projects involve NMSU service learning students
working with 8th graders to raise awareness about
college and career readiness, increasing youth civic
engagement in the education arena, and the
development of an educational framework for NM
to increase opportunities for all students.

The CoG Project weaves together several
empirically tested best practices as the foundation
for an innovative outreach effort that exposes
historically underserved middle school students to
NMSU student Role Models/Leaders and the
campus itself. Each year a group of 8 to 10
undergraduate and graduate students complete a
four part train-the-trainer series with Dr. Valverde.
The training prepares the CoG Role Models/Leaders
to engage with 8th graders in dialogues exploring
career and college options and the role of high
school in relationship to their futures.

GK-12 DISSECT: DIScover SciEnce through
Computational Thinking
575.646.6365.
Raena Cota (Program Coordinator)
http://www.cs.nmsu.edu/gk-12/
The overarching concept behind the DISSECT
(DIScover SciEnce through Computational Thinking)
project is scientific computational thinking [1].
Computational methods are central to virtually any
scientific discipline (?All Science is Computer
Science? [2]), yet this perspective is lacking in the
training provided to the new generation of
computer scientists and in the way STEM subjects
are taught in K-12 curricula.
DISSECT proposes to address these issues by
enabling CS graduate students to investigate the
relevance of their research in the broader scientific
arena, and to develop communication, leadership,
and team working skills to operate outside their
specific CS discipline. At the same time, traditional
approaches to exposing young students to
computing rely on introducing computing as a
separate discipline, using high-level languages, with
their idiosyncrasies; real world applications are
introduced as illustration of computing concepts,
often as an afterthought. DISSECT proposes to
proceed in the opposite direction, by introducing
computational thinking as a problem-solving
methodology in the context of existing STEM
courses.
