Two of the key changes to the health and safety regime in New Zealand have been the introduction of the primary duty of care and a positive obligation of “due diligence” for company officers.

Greg will discuss these fundamental concepts and how they are applied in the context of workplace accidents, drawing from both the Australian experience of health and safety prosecutions, and the lessons of major accident event inquiries from around the world from the past 30 years.

Dave will discuss the evolution of safety and training from originally being too basic, evolving to becoming overly bureaucratic and to today’s approach of using a risk based approach in implementing efficient and user friendly safety and training.

Greg SmithLegal Practice Director – STE Safety & Legal

Greg is an international award winning author and qualified lawyer who has spent almost two decades specialising in safety and health management, helping clients to understand their responsibility for safety and health, and developing processes to discharge those responsibilities.

In addition to being a lawyer, Greg has worked as the Principal Safety Advisor for a major oil and gas company and currently teaches the Accident Prevention unit at Curtin University in Western Australia.

Greg is the author of the books, Management Obligations for Safety and Health and the editor of the book Contractor Safety Management, which won the 2014 World Safety Organisation’s Educational Award.

Neville Rockhouse

Neville Rockhouse spent nearly 20 years in underground and opencut operations in Australia, before becoming professionally qualified in Safety Management and returning to New Zealand to operate a safety consultancy business for 10 years.

Neville holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Health and Safety and a Master of Occupational Health and Safety both from the University of Newcastle (NSW, Australia). Neville held the position of National Operations Manager for New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) for 8 years and has been the NZ representative on the Board of the International Safety and Health Practitioners Organisations (INSPO).

Marcus NalterConstruction and Manufacturing – WorkSafe New Zealand Marcus emigrated from the UK to NZ where he had previously worked as a health and safety advisor for both the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and National Health Service. In 1999 he joined the Department of Labour and rose to the rank of Senior Inspector before joining the management team in 2007.

Marcus is the National Programme Manager for Construction and Manufacturing for WorkSafe NZ and is leading the safe construction and safe manufacturing campaigns.

Dave Thomson Managing Director - Smart Staff International Pty Ltd

Dave gained significant operational experience working in the resource processing industry in various operational, management and business improvement roles prior to joining Smart Staff International (SSI) in 2006 as Managing Director.
