FRIDAY 9 OCTOBER9:00am – 4:00pm Mandatory Director Training: Director Foundation & Management Collaboration

This module provides clarity on your role and responsibilities as a director, your compliance requirements with the various pieces of legislation governing our industry and how you work hand-in-glove with your CEO/Secretary Manager, to oversee the effective management of the club.

Delna Dugdale(ClubsNSW)

12:00pm – 1:00pm Lunch (Mandatory Director Training participants only)

1:00pm – 4:00pm Masterclass 1: Vision, Leadership & Strategic Delivery (each Masterclass runs for three hours)

Jason Clarke set all minds racing with possibilities at last year’s conference, so he is back to reprise his challenge to think differently. Only this year, he is going to delve deeper into the areas of the Big Vision strategic future planning and how boards can show leadership in taking those ideas, from future vision to sustainable, deliverable reality. True leaders guide their management team along the path to operational implementation of the steps required today, tomorrow and beyond, with better design thinking, better decision making and ensuring community needs are addresses, to achieve the best possible future for your club.

Jason Clarke (Minds@Work)

1:00pm – 4:00pm Masterclass 2: Turbocharge Your Board Risk & Strategy (each Masterclass runs for three hours)

David Shortland brings his warm and engaging style back to this year’s masterclass, developing his turbocharged approach to the next phase of improved performance. Effective boards understand the need to focus more deeply on strategic planning, which is inherently fraught with risk, so David will explore what the latest approaches are to turbocharge your analysis, mitigation and management of risk. Should there be a Risk Sub Committee, or an agenda item for every meeting, or only on a quarterly basis? David will guide your investigation of how best to direct the risk management of strategy implementation for today’s club boards.

1:00pm – 4:00pm Masterclass 3: Property Development – Challenges & Opportunities (each Masterclass runs for three hours)

Many clubs in the past few years have taken advantage of the opportunity to enter into either a joint venture or project managed property development, often praying that this will be the panacea for an aged and ailing club. Creation of assets such as accommodation, commercial buildings or a residential subdivision, with promised bankable profits are just some of the projects undertaken. The results have varied with some clubs left in dire straits with massively increased debt, not cash in the bank. So how do you avoid the pitfalls? This masterclass will deliver the experience of successful redevelopments and identify the tricks and traps that the less scrupulous developers may try to use with you.

Richard Howard, CEO (Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club), Greg Russell (Russell Corporate Advisory)

1:00pm – 4:00pm ClubsNSW Corporate Governance Challenge
