Welcome from the Organising Committee

Welcome to the 32nd

CPSBC. This is the 10th

time that our three schools have hosted this

fantastic experience for Catholic Primary School children of NSW.

We welcome all those who are here for the first time and those who have visited before. This

year’s challenge is about basketball for the beginner and those who are more experienced.

We have introduced a combined Opening Ceremony and Paraliturgy on Saturday at 9.30am at

the Lauren Jackson Stadium, Albury. We hope that all participating schools will attend and

enjoy the experience.

We are organising three game venues so please allow travel time to arrive early at your venue.

Enjoy the weekend and make memories that will last a long time.

PARTICIPATION All players in a team, which are in attendance for a match, must take the court in both halves of the game. In the true spirit of the challenge this will mean that no child will sit and watch a game without participating. Teams that do not abide by this rule will forfeit their match. Players who are absent from absent from a match due to prior commitments are excluded from this rule.

GAME MODIFICATION

Foul shots will be awarded on the 7th team foul

Years 3 & 4 are to use the shorter line to shoot free throws. Years 5 & 6 are to use the standard free throw line to shoot free throws.

NO zone defence is permitted. Each team has two warnings. If in breach of this rule, the opposition side will be awarded the ball from halfway after each warning. Further breach after warnings will result in the opposition receiving 2 free throws to a designated player & receive possession of the ball at half way. Playing of Zone may also result in a loss of competition points as deemed by the Challenge Convenor.

Only players & officials can sit on the team bench.

ALL OTHER GAME RULES WILL BE AS PER THE OFFICIAL RULEBOOK.

INJURIES AND INCIDENTS Any major injuries or incidents are to be noted on the back of the relevant score sheets by a referee. If a player has an injury that requires them to be removed from the court, the child can only be removed by a Coach or Team Manager.

FIRST AID First aid officers will be present at every venue and identifiable by First Aid Lanyards. Please ask Venue Co-ordinators if assistance is required. Please note: only a coach can remove an injured player from the court.

DISPUTES Any disputes must be in writing and submitted to the Challenge Convenor within 10 minutes of the completion of the game. Those teams who are playing in a remote court are to hand their dispute to the court supervisor. The court supervisor will then have it to the challenge convenor within the hour. Disputes will be handled by the organising committee.

GRAND FINAL PRESENTATIONS All Grand Final presentations will be held straight after each game to enable teams to travel home at a reasonable hour. Perpetual Trophies are available for taking team photographs but must be returned to the Venue Co-ordinator immediately afterwards. No Perpetual Trophies are to leave the venues. CODE OF CONDUCT ~ COACHES

Be reasonable in your demands on young players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.

Teach your players that the rules of the game are mutual agreements, which no one should

evade or break.

Avoid over-playing the talented players. The “just-average” players need, and deserve, equal

time.

Remember that children play for fun & enjoyment & the winning is only part of their

motivation. Never ridicule children for making mistakes or losing a game.

Develop team respect for ability of opponents as well as for the judgement of officials &

opposing coaches.

Be aware of the role of the coach as an educator, as well as imparting knowledge & skills,

promote desirable personal & social behaviours.

Immediately prior to a game commencing, shake hands with the opposition coach.

Immediately a game concludes both coaches should meet at the centre line to shake hands.

Only one team official at any one time should approach the scorebench.

Direct, hostile or negative comments to opposition coaches or player is unacceptable.

It is not acceptable for a Coach to make indirect comments towards referees that allocate

blame or incompetence i.e. “Don’t worry Michael, you never touched him”.

CODE OF CONDUCT ~ PARENT/SPECTATORS

Encourage children to participate if they are interested. If they are not, don’t force them.

Focus on playing the game, reducing the emphasis on winning.

Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each

game is accepted without undue disappointment.

Encourage children to always play by the rules

Do not criticise children in front of others, but reserve constructive criticism for more private

moments.

Remember children are involved in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.

Remember a child learns best by example. Applaud good play by all teams.

Accept decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability. Do not

raise issues of disagreement publicly.

Do not criticise opposing team members or supporters by word or gesture.

Set a good example by your own conduct, behaviour & appearance.

Support all efforts to remove verbal & physical abuse from sporting activities.

Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender, race or impairment.

Page 10: 2015 Catholic Primary Schools Basketball Challenge · Size 6 basketballs will be used in all grades. ... All non-grand final games are using a “running clock”, therefore the clock

CODE OF CONDUCT ~ PLAYERS

Play by the rules.

Never argue with an official. If you disagree, have your captain, coach or manager approach

the referee during a break or after the game in appropriate manner.

Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players, deliberately distracting or

provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in basketball.

Work equally hard for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit so

will you.

Be a good sport. Acknowledge all good plays whether they be your team or the other team.

Treat all players, as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair

advantage of another player.

Co-operate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without them there would be no

competition.

Play for the “fun of it” and not just to please parents & coaches.

Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender, race or impairment.

Be prepared to lose sometimes. Everyone wins & loses at sometime. Be a fair winner &

good loser.

CODE OF CONDUCT ~ REFEREES Interpret rules & regulations to match the skill level & the needs of participants.

Compliment both teams on their efforts.

Be consistent, objective & courteous in calling all infractions.

Condemn the deliberate foul as being unsportsmanlike, and promote fair play & appropriate

sporting behaviour.

Use common sense to ensure that the “Spirit of the Game” for children is not lost by

overcalling violations.

Actions speak louder than words. Ensure that both on and off the court your behaviour is

consistent with the principles of good sportsmanship.

Help the education process in the game. Referees can help players learn to play the game

well by ensuring rule infractions are understood and by encouraging fair play.
