02 NEWS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 25 2015 CCSE01Z01MA - V1 Young leaders unite CAIRNS change-maker Kate Smith has been selected to par- ticipate in the inaugural China Australia Millennial Project (CAMP) in Sydney, which will bring together 100 emerging Australian leaders and 100 young Chinese innovators. Being held as part of Vivid Sydney Festival in June, the project will place some of the best young minds in China and Australia in 20 think tanks to develop solutions for 20 press- ing challenges facing both na- tions everything from energy, education and gender equality to tourism, transport and technology. “It’s going to be a great op- portunity to meet young peo- ple from all backgrounds and see what interesting ideas and innovations they are trying to make happen,” said Ms Smith. The 28-year-old is studying for a Masters of Environmen- tal Engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing. “I’m most looking forward to meeting other motivated young Chinese and Austra- lians working and studying in my field,” she said. “I hope to learn a lot. “I have applied to be part of the natural resource manage- ment think tank.” Ms Smith’s research focus is water supply and she leads sus- tainable water filter projects in rural areas of northern China through the student-based vol- unteer organisation, RISE Tsinghua. Conversant in five langua- ges, she is studying for her Masters in both Mandarin and English. Funded by the Federal Gov- ernment through the Australia China Council, the CAMP pro- ject aims to empower young Australian and Chinese entre- preneurs to kickstart their own projects by pitching their ideas to investors and governments. Ms Smith said the project involved a 12-week online pro- gram and a five-day “innova- tion incubator lab” in Sydney from June 1-5, mentored by global change makers. She encouraged others to apply for a place before the February 28 deadline. “People who will benefit the most are those with an in- terest in both Australia and China and who have a project, idea or innovation that they are passionate about,” Ms Smith said. Applicants must be 18-35 and may be eligible for schol- arships to help with costs. Valued at $8000, the 12- week program costs $888 (in- dividuals, students, non profit) or $1888 (corporate, govern- ment) and includes a free Syd- ney Harbour Bridge Climb.
