FUNDAMENTAL sporTsThe YMCA’s Fundamental Youth Sports Programs teach the basic skills of the sport through drills and practices with less emphasis on the game. We concentrate more on the fundamentals of the sport and towards the end of the session introduce modified games. Fundamental Sports runs 45 minutes; Recreational Sports run 75 minutes.

y Family members Win! One free fundamental sport per session, per child is included with your Y Family Membership. Additional sport programs beyond the first value-added class are $31/session for children with a Family membership.

Flag FootBallLearn the basic skills of Flag Football in a 7 on 7 format. Your child will learn positions and roles, receiving, throwing, and running while building confidence and showing good sportsmanship and teamwork.

BaSketBallLearn the fundamentals of positions and roles, passing, shooting & rebounding in a non-competitive environment. Modified games will be introduced in this session.

SoCCerLearn the fundamental soccer skills of positions, ball control, and team play on a smaller field with fewer players while developing values of good sportsmanship and self esteem. Modified games are incorporated during the session.

VolleYBall Learn the values of good sportsmanship, teamwork, goal setting and skill development, self-esteem and confidence in a fun atmosphere. Your child will learn skills such as serving, setting and bumping in a clinic-style environment.

“Power in Pink” girlS BaSketBallLearn the fundamental skills of basketball while getting ready to play the game in a non-competitive, all-girls atmosphere. Modified games are incorporated during the session.

“FUn” Damental CliniCSDevelop and improve upon the building blocks of the sport in a 2 hour clinic. Get ready to play in our YMCA Youth Sports Programs and future sport program. Our clinics are fun, fast-paced, and are led by Y Sports Site Supervisors that teach fundamental skills and positions of the sport.

VolleYBallA team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other teams’ court. At the Y, this is a progressive program.• Ages: 7-17• Location: South Bay

Beginner: Teaches the basic skills of the sport through fun drills and practices with less emphasis on game play. We concentrate more on the fundamentals of the sport and towards the end of the monthly session introduce modified game play. Beginner volleyball focuses on learning passing, setting and serving techniques.• Ages: 7-14

intermediate: teaches the basic skills of the sport through fun drills and practices with less emphasis on game play. We concentrate more on the fundamentals of the sport and towards the end of the monthly session introduce modified game play. While building on the skills developed in the beginning volleyball class (passing, setting and serving techniques), the intermediate class adds defense skill techniques to prepare the player for league play. • Ages: 10-17

tenniSTennis is a racquet sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racquet that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent’s court. The object of the game is to play the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a good return. The opponent who is unable to return the ball will not gain a point, while the opposite opponent will. This is a progressive program. • Ages: 5-14• Location: South Bay

novice level 1 & 2/level 3: An indoor program that teaches the basic skills of the sport using the USTA’s Quick Start Program, which uses game play as a means of making instruction fun for the youth.

Novice Level 4 (Pre-Team): An outdoor program that prepares the player to be successful at our team level.

novice adult: An indoor program that teaches the basic skills of the sport to adults using exercise fitness and tennis instruction to make the class a fun learning environment.

Recreational Sports work on developmental skills with more advanced curriculum in a league format. Week 1 is a team practice. Weeks 2-7 begin with a 30-minute practice followed by a 45-minute game. Here we introduce more game play (unlike Fundamental Sports where we emphasis more on skills and drills with modified games). Referees are incorporated in grade level 3-4 in Football, Soccer, and Basketball. At grade level 3-4 we will also introduce score as a part of the game without putting too much emphasis upon competition.

A LEAGUE FOR EVERYONE (League Sports | Offered Quarterly)

YMCA Sports Leagues are recreational youth sports programs designed for youngsters to have fun while learning sportsmanship, rules and skills. The league is supported by parent volunteers and YMCA staff. Games are played with age-appropriate equipment. All sports leagues are co-ed. Seasons run for 8-10 weeks.

CheerleaDingThis exciting youth cheer program is open to all boys and girls who love todance, cheer and perform. Our cheer program will teach your child various dance and cheer combinations, basic stunts and tumbling to prepare him or her for a high school team audition. Along with these skills, participants will build teamwork, confidence, leadership skills and the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, responsibility and respect.• Ages: 7-14• Location: Border View

SoCCer Is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world’s most popular sport. Our South County region’s older divisions may visit other local YMCA branches for players to be exposed to the experience of both arena and field soccer.

Field: This is a non-competitive soccer program designed for beginning to intermediate level players to have fun while learning sportsmanship, as well as soccer rules and skills in a league format. The league is supported by parent volunteers and YMCA staff. Games are played with age-appropriate equipment. Referees are incorporated in the 5-6 year old division as we introduce score as a part of the game without putting too much emphasis upon competition. • Ages: 4-12• Location: South Bay

arena: This is a non-competitive soccer program designed for beginning to intermediate level players to have fun while learning sportsmanship, as well as soccer rules and skills in a league format. The league is supported by parent volunteers and YMCA staff. Games are played with age-appropriate equipment. Arena soccer has all the excitement of playing outdoor soccer with the added fun of being able to play the ball off the walls. Every child gets a chance to play and learn the game.• Ages: 5-13• Location: Border View

BaSketBallBasketball is one of the world’s most popular and widely viewed sports and was founded at the YMCA.

League (non-competitive): Designed to teach the beginning to intermediate level player the fundamentals of basketball in a modified league format. Referees are incorporated in the 7 year olds division and up. Our staff and coaches strive to make this a fun learning experience for all involved. • Ages: 4-13• Locations: Border View | South Bay

Challenger (competitive): Designed for the intermediate level player in a competitive league format with standings and playoffs. Teams play against other local YMCA teams.• Ages: 13-17• Locations: Border View | South Bay (travel may be required)

Flag FootBallIs a version of American Football where the basic rules of the game are similar to those of the mainstream game but instead of tackling players to the ground, the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier. Designed to teach the beginning to intermediate level player the fundamental skills of football in a league format, but without the requirement of contact at an early age. Your child will learn positions and roles, receiving, throwing and running while building confidence, showing good sportsmanship and teamwork. Referees are incorporated in all age divisions as we introduce score as a part of the game without putting too much emphasis upon competition. • Ages: 5-10• Location: South Bay

VolleYBallOriginally called mintonette, volleyball was created by the YMCA. An experimental game, mintonette combined a variation of the badminton net, with elements of basketball, and the German game of fistball and handball.

non-Competitive: This co-ed program designed for beginning to intermediate level players to have fun while learning sportsmanship, as well as volleyball rules and skills in a league format. Referees are incorporated as we introduce score as a part of the game without putting too much emphasis upon competition. • Ages: 11-14• Location: South Bay

Competitive: This program is designed for the current high school player who wants to maintain their skill level between seasons, or the advanced middle school player who wants to prepare themselves for the upcoming high school season.Ages: 14-17Location: South Bay (travel may be required)

tenniSIs an international racquet sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as “lawn tennis.”

novice team: The tennis team participates in San Diego Junior Team Tennis (SDJTT/USTA) leagues in the Spring and Fall. Through match play, we will focus on the serve, forehand, backhand, volley, half-volley, overhead smash, drop shot and lob.• Ages: 10-14• Location: South Bay (Local travel is required)

Jr. rBiThe Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) Program from Major League Baseball aims to create playing opportunities for children ages 5 through 12. The program is designed to increase participation and interest in baseball and softball, encourage academic participation, achievement and teach the value of teamwork. • Ages: 5-12• Location: South Bay
