Were back this year with an enhancement to our Black Business Directory. In response to years of requests, we printed our first “annual” community calendar.

If you’re active in the community, you understand the need for this calendar. It happens time and time again, activities stacked upon activities with people wondering how it continues to happen. Well, this calendar won’t eliminate that problem, but it will help event planners make informed decisions and most of all, it gives members of the community a “heads up” on upcoming events.

Yes, we’ll continue to include a calendar in our bi-weekly publications and by no means is this presented as a complete listing of 2015 community events. Many organizations we reached out to have not set their calendars for 2015 and we know, “things come up.” So continue to check the calendar in each issue and also check out our expanded online calendar of events. Due to space limitations, we reserve space in our print calendar for non-profit organizations. However, the online calendar is open to submissions from for-profit groups. So go online and search ahead of the weekend for great things to do. See instructions for posting your event on page 8.

Finally, we’re pleased once again to have more than 150 businesses and community organizations in our directory. We were disappointed by how many businesses in our 0214 directory were no longer open when we reached out to them this year. That indicates how much these small businesses need our support. So we encourage you to keep this directory and to refer to it often before you shop.

If you failed to get your business listed, no problem. The directory will be posted online and updated monthly. See instructions for getting your business listed on page 8. Remember, if you misplace your directory, you can always find it and the calendar online at www.voiceitwichita.com.

We are not planning to print another edition of our Black Business Directory and calendar until

January 2016. However, we will update the online edition of this directory on a monthly basis. So, if you can’t find the kind of business you’re looking for in this print edition, check online for possible additions.

The online version of the directory can be found at our website www.voiceitwichita.com.

If you’re a small business owner, church, service provider or representative of a non-profit group and would like to have your business or ogranization listed, go online and get added to our online edition. The directory will be updated during the first

week of each month. The monthly deadline for submissions is the last day of the month. So, in order to be a part of the updates to be made during the first week of February, you need to submit your listing no later than January 31. Listings can be submitted on our website at www.voiceitwichita.com. Listings are not-free, but almost free. Basic listings are $20 for the year.

The deadline for inclusion in the 2016 print edition is November 30, 2015.

Promote Your Event for Free In Our Online Calendar For-profit and non-profit events accepted in our expanded online calendarat www.voiceitwichita.com.

If you’re looking for a way to promote your event for free, post it in our expanded online calendar. We recognized groups and

organizations are looking for affordable ways to get the word out about their events so we’ve expanded our online calendar. While space requires us to limit the items we include in the calendar in each issue of The Community Voice, our resources aren’t nearly as limited online.

Just go online to www.voiceitwichita.com and post your event. For accountability reasons, to post, you must first register as a site user.

FYI, we reserve the right to remove any item we consider offensive and repeated offenders will be banned.

If you’re a non-profit, we will pull

from posted events for inclusion in the calendar and church briefs included in the paper. NOTE: just because you post your event online, there is no guarantee your event will be included in the paper. Remember, print space is limited.

To be considered for inclusion in the paper, POST YOUR EVENT EARLY. We suggest a minimum of three-weeks to a month ahead of the event.

In addition, as a community paper, we select items that we feel have the broadest appeal to and connection with our readers.

If you want to guarantee your event is included in the print version of The Community Voice, consider purchasing an ad. You’ll be surprised how affordable our ads are.

Whether it’s consumer debt on credit cards, student loans or a mortgage, most people find themselves weighed down by debt at

some point in their lives. This can keep us working jobs we hate just to pay the bills and keep our heads above water. By learning how to pay off debt fast you can release this burden and remove some of the stress from your life.

Today I’m going to show you how to pay off your debt as fast as possible using the Stack Method.

Step 1: Stop Creating New DebtMost people do not receive training in handling

money and how to live within their means. If you’re in debt then you’re probably one of these people and it’s time to bite the reality bullet. It’s going to be impossible to get out of debt unless you retrain your financial habits right now.

You must make a stand against all the marketers trying to take your hard earned money or offering easy finance. You don’t need more stuff to make you happy. What you need is financial peace of mind.

So cut up your credit cards or freeze them. I mean this literally. Put them in a container of water and stash them in your freezer. Then when there’s an opportunity to spend, you have time to thaw out (you and the credit cards) and really decide if you need that purchase.

Step 2: Rank Your Debt by Interest RateMake a list of all your debt with amounts and the

interest rate. The highest interest rate should be at the top as this is what you’ll pay off first. Paying off your high interest debt is the key to the Stack Method and paying off debt as fast as possible.

Interest is a powerful weapon and right now the bank or other financial institutions are using it against you. Interest significantly increases the amount you need to pay back and often we’re completely

unaware of how much that is.

For example, if you have a $10,000 credit card debt at 20% interest where you pay a minimum pay-ment of $200 a month, you will end up taking 9 years and 8 months to pay off the actual amount of $21,680 including $11,680 in interest!

Step 3: Lower Your Interest RatesYou can often lower your credit card interest rates

by doing a balance transfer. This means moving your credit card to another bank and they will lower the interest rate to get your business. Shop around and try to get the lowest interest rate for the longest dura-tion (preferably until it’s paid off completely).

Just make sure you’re reading the terms and conditions carefully so you don’t get stung by the new bank in other ways. Once you’ve done this you can order your list of debt again if things have changed.

Step 4: Create a Strategic Spending PlanThis is where we improve on your financial control

from Step 1. Take a piece of paper and write down your income after tax and all the expenses that you have. This will include the minimum payments on all your debt.

Look at your expenses and then rank them in order of importance to you. Look at the items on the bottom of your list and decide whether you’d rather have them or be financially stable. The objective is to create a Strategic Spending Plan where your expenses are lower than your income.

You also decide how much you are willing to spend on each area of your life. You can allocate amounts for rent, groceries, eating out, buying clothes and other activities however realize that once you’ve spent your allocated money there’s no dipping into other areas. It also helps to have a Fun Account that you can spend on what you like and an Emergencies Account in case your car breaks down etc.

You also want to include in your Strategic Spend-ing Plan as extra amount you’re going to use to pay off debt. Can you afford $20 a week? $50? $100? $200 or more? It’s important that you get a realistic number that you can commit to each week without fail and this is your Stack Repayment.

Step 5: Create a Repayment ScheduleThe first part of the Stack Method is to cover the

minimum payment on every single debt you have. Any time you miss a payment, you incur fees and these add up quickly. This also includes making the minimum payment on the debt with the highest interest rate.

Then for the debt with the highest interest rate (your Target Debt) you’re going to add the Stack Repayment from your Strategic Spending Plan. You apply this Stack Repayment and the minimum pay-ment until that debt is paid off in full.

As your official minimum payment decreases you add that extra amount to your Stack Repayment. So as your minimum repayment drops your Stack Re-payment increases equally. This will compound how fast you pay off the Target Debt by adding even more to the repayments you’re making.

Step 6: Reward Your ProgressYou want to track your Target Debt so you can see

your progress along the way. You can also decide on milestones that you’re going to celebrate and reward yourself on. A reward doesn’t have to cost money but if it does then it comes from your previously allocated Strategic Spending Plan.

This is an important step as it will keep your motivation going when you feel your willpower fad-ing. Just like you’ve trained yourself to brush your teeth and shower, you can train yourself to manage your money. Feel great that you’re now entering the 10-20% of people who are actually responsible with

money.

Step 7: Compound Your ResultsOnce you pay off your Target Debt you have a

huge celebration and congratulate yourself. Then you move the Stack Repayment (which includes the pre-vious minimum payment as well now) to the next debt with the highest interest rate. This becomes the new Target Debt and you are using your Stack Repayment amount plus the minimum payment for the new debt.

This is why the Stack Method is so powerful. As you decrease a debt you actually increase your Stack Repayment amount. This means the second debt will get paid off even faster, the third even faster than that, and so on and so on until you are completely debt free.

Step 8: Be Kind to YourselfDuring this process your resolve is going to be

tested multiple times. Maybe you’ll have an emer-gency like your car breaking down or the need to travel for a sick relative. The important thing is to not throw up your hands in despair while going back to your old habits.

Life will test your commitment to your new responsible money attitude and it’s up to you how you respond. When things go wrong (and I guarantee they will) you need to shrug it off and get back on track. Show compassion when you accidentally go over your Strategic Spending Plan and decide to do better next week.

Now You Know How To Pay Off Debt Fast…The Stack Method is a powerful tool but it’s up to

you whether you use it. If you really want results then print out this article immediately and start working through the steps. It’s only by the decision you make right now that you will enjoy a debt free future and live a financially

How To Pay Off Debt Fast Using The Stack Method

the challenge of debt in the African-American community

When you look at the small number of African-American businesses in Wichita, you wonder what’s stopping bright people, with good ideas, from stepping out and giving business a try? Well the num-

ber one reason people don’t go into business is a lack of capital to finance it and with the African-American community, nationwide, drowning in debt, no wonder there are so few Black businesses.

While the bad news is, African-Americans are drowning in debt, the good news is they actually seem to want to do something about it. Accord-ing to a biennial survey conducted by Prudential Financials, when asked how they would use an extra 10% of income, almost half (48%) of African Americans indicated their top priority would be paying down debt . That’s a higher percentage than the general population.

The survey is one of a series of reports from Prudential examining finan-

cial trends in multicultural communities. Here are a couple more findings: One in four African-Americans has felt anxiety or depression as a result

of debt, the survey found.African-Americans have a median household debt of $18,000, not includ-

ing home mortgages, which is about 50% higher than the household debt for the general population.

With that information in mind, a new year ahead of us and a directory we hope you’ll refer to often throughout 2015, we reprinted the following article on how to pay down debt quickly.

Good luck on your resolution and when you’re on a better footing, good luck on starting that business, taking that trip, retiring or whatever you’ve put off doing simply because, you were too deep in debt.
