2015 APT Feedback Dear Julie, You’ve done a great thing for the art world at large. Thank you so much for including me in the Inaugural Mildura Australian Print Triennial. You gathered together a group of important Australian artists through the medium of etching, silk screen, lithograph etc. In many ways these are a vulnerable group as they pursue with a great sense of devotion their medium of making art and enriching the wellbeing of Australia’s culture as they do so. Fascinatingly from the commercial gallery point of view that print making is the only consistent medium that we continually have to explain, painting, sculpture, installations etc seem to be taken as a given but printmaking has them tricked. Still to this day the general perception by the masses is that a print image is made from a photographic reproduction. I have no doubt though that like Europe and America etchings and so on will become admired and collected, for their rightful place by the general art buying public. We are well down the track to that end. You have ridden in on your Mildura charger to hasten the cause. This triennial just past, with your exceptional generosity, has lifted the bar on printmaking in this country. The artists en masse were so thrilled to be recognised and gathered together. In conversation they bounced off each other like on trampolines. They gained great confidence in themselves all the while holding their dignity – all down to you. Amusingly the bus travels, usually silent occasions, bore testament to all of this. One could barely hear the person next to you for 20 or 30 unstoppable and continuous loud exchanges. For the presentation and talks I felt that I was at university, I would say back at excepting I never went, all my knowledge and mostly education has come from the art world anyway. These sessions were so professionally organised with the speakers at every level being so pleased to be there, confident, serious and imparting bucket loads of information. Now to the meals and their venues. I simply say, ‘outstanding’. Unfortunately I missed the Friday night treat of Stefano’s but I know that would have been wonderful, being transported by bus to a property with magnificent gardens for our pre-dinner walk and then to dine in the marquee extraordinaire was an occasion of a new standard. Setting – brilliant, food – delicious, the opportunity to mingle in such surroundings – was both a pleasure and extremely valuable. To then have this followed up with an equally glamorous and elegant occasion of lunch at your home was just astonishingly wonderful in the extreme. I left Mildura with the indelible warm and fuzzies and I thank you for it. Hi Julie I hope that you had a fabulous birthday yesterday and that you have fully recovered from all the strains and stresses of organising the Australian Print Triennial. everyone involved should be thrilled and you two should be congratulated on bringing this wonderful spotlight on printmaking to mildura. and kevin, your incredibly generous doubling of the prize was - well i don't know how to describe it but if i 'd had to come up with the winners it would have been the same choice, two truly inspiring printmakers. i know tomorrow will just be more of the same - wonderful people in a wonderful place, enjoying being together and taking printmaking a step further xx anne (Spudvilas) Wentworth Dearest Julie, I had the most wonderful time. I feel so blessed to have been a recipient of your incredible generosity and to be amongst people with so much passion for the arts. And of course, the houseboat was utter bliss (miss the swans and ducks already!) I hope all is well with Kevin. I'm amazed that you were able to function at all with the stresses you had to deal with! Please know that if you are ever in Sydney, we have a spare room (with ensuite) and it's yours whenever you want. We'd love to be able to return a little of your hospitality. Thank you again and much love, Nicky xxxxx Nicky Crayson Sydney ________________________________________________________________________ Dear All - This time last week (Sunday pm) we were enjoying a beautiful lunch on the banks of the river after a ‘full on’ Print Conference thanks to Julie and Art Vault crew. I remember feeling very pleasantly tired. With the help of Barak, Mei and Michele the plates from the workshop were etched Saturday morning and printed Sunday morning commencing at 6am. In the ‘crunch’ of the final hours of the Conference some of you managed to collect your prints and plates. I have the remaining plates and prints with me here in Tasmania and if you would like them sent to you then forward a postal address to me for same. Thank you for your participation in the workshop and I wish you well for future printing projects. Regards from Raymond (Arnold) Tasmania ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HI Mia most of mine are on Facebook, but I guess some are higher resolution if I dug them out of the iPhone What an amazing response everyone loved the APT it was fantastic…congrats all-round peeps !! cheers Tony Tony Ameneiro Mittagong

Ron McBurnie Townsville

Please tell us what you really liked about the Australian Print Triennial.

• Generosity of all involved. Sincere, interesting and unpretentious colleagues. Some very good

speakers, excellent MC. Apart from the workshops, all the speakers were enjoyed by the same audience. There were no breakouts with smaller groups. I think this is an important key to the success of the Triennial. conferences can become too big.

• The hospitality, staying on a houseboat with my contemporaries. I knew none to begin with

and got to know people well. I was well paired with another artist to share with. I really liked the relaxed, less pompous feel to the event. I made so many good friends over the three days. I really liked the balance of workshops and speaking events. I really liked that coffee and food was available at each venue. I really like Julie, Kevin, Mia, Sonja, Robert, and

Page 11: 2015 APT Feedback - Australian Print Triennial · 2019. 12. 8. · 2015 APT Feedback Dear Julie, You’ve done a great thing for the art world at large. Thank you so much for including

Andrew, they are amazing people :) and all the volunteers and everyone involved behind the scene. I really liked being picked up from the airport-what a beautiful and thoughtful gesture! The time of year was perfect! The food and hospitality at each venue was fantastic! I really liked how each day/venue was less formal than the first. I liked that we went to a new venue each day-I felt like I really visited Mildura

• it was extremely well organised, a varied and interesting range of speakers, workshops and

demonstrations, the accommodation was excellent, an inspired and stimulating event • warm friendly relaxed, good speakers, well run, good venues, good food, everyone was very

respectful of each other

• The opportunity to not only reconnect with printmakers and related people that I already knew, but to also extend my involvement in the particularly special community that is printmaking in the region. Thank you!!

• Well run, friendly collegiate atmosphere

• Firstly the superb effort put in by the Julie Chambers and the Art Vault team. The wide range

of topics including speakers who addressed the hard issues facing artists in current times. The warmth and camaraderie of the group. The weather! The accommodation and the generally easy environment of Mildura.

• I really enjoyed the events and how professional they were put on. The volunteers and staff

were fantastic and set the mood for a very friendly setting. Julie Chambers and Sasha did a fantastic job, well done

• Superbly organised, friendly volunteers and staff, interesting sessions being a mix of practical

(demos) theoretical and philosophical topics. The change of venues for different sessions worked really well, so each time was a new experience. The mix of artists and others was very stimulating and we all left feeling that there was more to do/see and people to meet. Last but not least, the incredible generosity of the Art Vault, who spoiled the artists and delegates like never before; nothing was too much trouble or cost. For the participants, this first APT will be memorable for all of the above, and the wonderful vibe between people. I loved the Keynote speech and Sasha's participation. We all learned so much, on so many levels!

• The diversity of speakers, the subject matter of the talks, which are applicable to

contemporary art practice, engaging with Raymond Arnold through the workshop, well organised event

• Excellent range of presenters/topics. Well organised. Great social events, well catered, great

settings.

• a wonderful chance to come together and showcase our ideas and share our on going concerns and development of Printmaking, also to catch up with fellow colleagues

• Meeting the artists, the allying at social events, the intimacy and focus of the event. The great

environment of Mildura.

• Such a friendly gathering with open discussion. Great speakers too.

• conversations about art /printmaking fellowship of artists

• meeting other artists, robin archer's talk.

• Keynotes and panelists. Size - small enough to meet a lot of artists and large enough to attract s good range of speakers

• Chance to meet lots of other printmakers, hear about their practices and experiences, make

new friends, and see some amazing work at the three exhibitions.

• I got to hear really interesting and inspiring talks from amazing printmakers I have been admiring for a very long time - was such a rare opportunity to see them all in one place.

• Great for networking

• Friendly and inclusive. Community workshops and local volunteers was a positive aspect.

some very stimulating presentations and keynote addresses.

• Meeting all the brilliant artists

• Everything - Especially the social networking with other artist. Loved the talks. Food was spectacular!

• the high standard of all participants, both practising artists and arts proponents. the easy

transport to the events, the fact that each day they were in one location, and consecutive, no choosing between talks or sessions

• Great organisation, variety of presenters, opportunities to mingle informally with presenters/

artists, the venues and inclusive attitude of all staff involved

• I was lucky enough to enjoy some impromptu expert explanation about the techniques involved in some of the prints on display at the Vault

• Can't fault a thing. Organised to perfection!

• Great selection of artists. Some very good speakers. Excellent artwork. Good venues.

• Intimacy, atmosphere and unity

• The availability of artists

• High calibre speakers who were extraordinary. Relaxed atmosphere, easy access to venues.

• The quality of the art work on show. The ease of meeting & talking to artists, the panels,

artists talking about aspects of their art, workshop/demo

• Meeting other regional artists; the supportive nature of the group; friendliness of all; the fact that it was in a large regional centre not a capital city; learning new approaches.

• The diversity and quality of artists' presentations, Robyn Archer's keynote address, the

workshops, range of quality print exhibitions, organisation of the event, excellent catering during the day & long lunch on Sunday.

• the friendly laid back nature of the event, the location itself, great hosts and guest speakers

• The exhibitions were well worth seeing. The workshop I attended was terrific. The keynote

speakers were sensational, and all panels interesting and informative. The social / professional aspects of the triennial were a significant part of the success of the event.

• The artists' talks and art presentations as well as the workshops on Friday morning.

• The atmosphere - diversity of attendees and presenters - diversity of sessions - inclusion of

practical sessions on professional practice.

• The thing was fabulous - good length, excellent content, entertaining presentations, fabulous networking opportunities.

• Very well organised, very helpful friendly staff, excellent social opportunities, great forums, workshops and exhibitions

Page 13: 2015 APT Feedback - Australian Print Triennial · 2019. 12. 8. · 2015 APT Feedback Dear Julie, You’ve done a great thing for the art world at large. Thank you so much for including

• The diversity of the speakers and variety of topics. The idea of a print prize in conjunction was

great. Catching up with artists from different states I hadn't seen in ages. Excellent organisation of everything was very much appreciated (very streamlined).

• awesome

• The extraordinary generosity and friendliness of the staff, which created such a positive

atmosphere! Everyone I spoke too was utterly overwhelmed by how well we were looked after, and felt extremely privileged to have been invited to take part. This made for very warm and friendly sessions and workshops (all very well attended thanks to the excellent bus service). Speakers were fantastic, the art was fantastic, food was sensational and the houseboat accommodation the icing on the cake.

• I am a Secondary Teacher and found the workshops really helpful. I wish I could of done a

heap more of them.

Please tell us how we can improve the next Australian Print Triennial

• Don't know, more of the same I think.

• I think the workshops could be over two days and half a day each so we can do more than

one workshop. There were so many good demos and I couldn't get to all of them. Perhaps the bus could leave from Gol Gol an extra 15mins earlier in the morning to allow for a quick coffee pick up.

• not sure you could

• a smidgen more free time for chatting although i suspect that there will never be enough!

• More of it? Not sure as it seemed a good balance of everything... time to talk, time to listen,

time to do a workshop.

• Cost of the Amplelon dinner was high but it was very much worth it. Maybe offer an alternative for people that couldn’t afford the dinner but they could still feel that they were part of the event.

• I cannot think of a single thing!

• More workshops/demonstration time. More discussion about ways printmaking can sustain

relevance in terms of contemporary art practices and trends

• Perhaps full or half-day workshops.

• It would have been good to mark the event with a permanent piece that all the artists could contribute to for Art Vault.

• Perhaps a little more free time, open for play or visiting.

• More time for speakers!

• more exhibitions?

• perhaps talks by emerging artists, this might involve the younger people a bit more.

• More time for q&a at end of sessions

Page 14: 2015 APT Feedback - Australian Print Triennial · 2019. 12. 8. · 2015 APT Feedback Dear Julie, You’ve done a great thing for the art world at large. Thank you so much for including

• Thanks again for hosting a fabulous event. I only had three small concerns that I feel would help make APT2018 even better. There was some confusion as to whether a slide show was required for the presentations. I was told specifically no, everyone else was told yes. It felt a bit like being the only person at the prom in a singlet and thongs. The best talks [Rona Green and Jo Lankester stand out] were the ones where the artist focused on the forum topic and kept their biography to a minimum. Rona's talk was powerful because she talked about the business and marketing side of her practice rather than just showing her work. Ditto for Jo where we learned about Renew Townsville and the ins and outs of navigating a practice in Regional Australia. I realise ego can be a issue here as it is very tempting to highlight your own work in a talk. It is also easier as preparing a talk like Rona's requires far more work than simply listing your achievements. But it made for much more interesting panels and discussions. Time limits. All the talks were interesting, and even on the ones that ran over time it was hard to say stop [esp when the work was as terrific as Di Longely's]. But me long equals you short, and cuts into the equally interesting [and sometimes hairy] q and a sessions. Thanks!

• Maybe there could be a committee who can work with the Art Vault to organise talks and

events etc. It would have been a tremendous work on the staff too and I'm sure we are more than happy to take part in the organisation part of the Triennial.

• enjoyed the workshops and would have liked the opportunity to attend more than one.

• Whilst the time of year was great weather wise it was held when many tertiary institutions

were involved in student assessment. This may have had an impact on attendances. Being held in the same year as the Symposium in Canberra may have meant those who had been to Canberra couldn't afford a second event, in particular students and next generation print artists.

• More workshop options spread over the 3 days

• I would love to see a session included that was more of a debate - e.g. the old and new

printmaking, people arguing both sides and interaction between them, with the audience included later as well

• Perhaps a little more food at first lunch.

• Perhaps there could be even more opportunity for artists to talk about/demonstrate their

techniques.

• Do exactly the same again!

• Bigger and better

• There needs to be enough lunch at the MAC for all delegates to have lunch. The winner of the print competition should be announced at a session at the University or at the MAC. The Art Vault is not big enough for all delegates to enter. We were on the footpath outside and had to ask someone who was in there, who won? A lesser issue, the Pizza Cafe was provided a miserable meal in the side area which was hot and airless. Maybe a better venue could be found in future?

• It was very unclear what was free & what you had to pay for. Some people from other places

who were attending the triennial where asking me lots of questions about different things about mildura eg is mungo very close? what are the weirs and locks about? Where do we get our water supply from? Etc etc. could there be a bit more info available about our district?

• Re the talks/demos etc perhaps a little more guidance on what was required eg Q and A

sessions turned out to be a bit variable

• perhaps program slightly more time for the workshops. e.g. extend from 2 hours to 3 hours. Perhaps one session where artists go in to more detail on their working processes.

Page 15: 2015 APT Feedback - Australian Print Triennial · 2019. 12. 8. · 2015 APT Feedback Dear Julie, You’ve done a great thing for the art world at large. Thank you so much for including

• Perhaps include the MAC as part of the venues for a print display, I know they were showing

Christine Johnstone’s prints but how amazing if the whole place were full of print displays, then tack on an extra day for just viewing prints at four venues !!

• There was some informal discussion about printmaking training opportunities (or the lack

thereof), for todays young artists - this is a key issue with many art schools in this country either closing or down sizing their print studios. Also, international studios such as Atelier Lacourier et Frelaut are no longer operating, thus reducing the opportunities available to gain significant experience at that elite level. So I would like to see a serious discussion about training for the next generation of artists at the next triennial.

• Minor only - maybe 1 less session Saturday morning, extra session of demos (Saturday

morning with those sessions moved to Sunday arvo?), stricter on talk time -15 min max. to allow for question time every session, lanyards slightly shorter and name tags of non speaking participants a bit clearer to read.

• I would like to hear and see the art of other artists because some of the presenting artists

already spoke about their works in the recent Print Symposium in Canberra. The symposium should be an opportunity for other artists to present their works.

Problem when the APT was planned first! Perhaps the Canberra Symposium should be held when first planned rather than later and just before the APT! Will there be another ANG Symposium?

• Morning tea and afternoon tea

• I thought everything was fabulous!

• One thing I found a bit awkward was the speakers, etc. having a different dinner venue to the symposium attendees (brewery / pizza cafe evening). But I am a bit of a socialist... And the people running the symposium sessions needed to have a way to tell the speakers their time was up. The question time being eaten into by artists not planning their talk to the set time was a bit disappointing. But this is obviously hard to manage. I just love question time!

• Short artist talks by the artists exhibiting. Speakers need to talk more directly about the topic.

• Possibly try to include some younger artists/practitioners/speakers?

• This is the most generous and enjoyable event of its kind I have ever attended. It feels mean

spirited to suggest any improvements at all! Maybe it could be at a slightly different time so that more students can attend (it coincided with final assessments for many) and maybe more vigilant time keeping. Some speakers went a bit over. I really enjoyed the demonstration/workshop I attended and would have liked the opportunity to attend more. But even if everything stayed exactly the same it would still be a stellar event, head and shoulders above the rest!

• you cant it was awesome.

What was the highlight of the event for you?

• Meeting many artists for the first time. Bonus having the jazz trio play for us on the Saturday

night.

• it's hard to pick one, it was all really good. I think it was the new friendships I made with a lot of very special people. (Thank you)

• the opening address

• the whole symposium - I have attended the national in Canberra many times, the international

Print symposium and Impact a couple of times, this was easily the best

• Ampelon Gardens dinner

• There were so many it is impossible to choose!

• Amplelon gardens dinner

• The long lunch: the food was sublime but it was the warm feeling between the people which

so special. Appreciation and gratitude was expressed by all, and the recognition that we are a community of artists.

• Day 2 curator discussion, sustainable practice talks on day 3

• Workshops/demonstrations and the discussion about sustaining a printmaking career.

• Presentation/panel discussions

• The people, just great people. The talks on Sat. Especially the stimulating nature of the talks -

political, social, not too academic

• All of it!

• Robyn Archers talk Sat afternoon meeting/talk with Art Vault staff member about the art/craft of mezzotint

• talks by robin archer and ex de medici.

• Robyn archer

• Ampelon gardens

• The speeches by Robyn Archer and Rona Green. Both were inspirational.

• The prints at the art vault, and the panel and artists talks on saturday. Just one thing, I

personally thought the ampleon gardens event was a bit exclusive in that it was out of reach of most people. Would like to see something that was inclusive of, and of interest to more people, something we could feel comfortable to attend.

• Meeting everyone. Also of course the big dinner!

• Some of the presentations ( e.g. Robyn Archer ) the quality of the main Print Triennial prize

exhibition.

• possibly the talks, they were of extremely high calibre

• Robyn Archer's keynote address - a spectacularly good speech which I will remember all my life.

• Getting to meet, hear and know many printmakers I have admired for a long time in such a

beautiful environment.

• The opening of the triennial exhibition. I was happy to see two first prize winners. I hope that it will continue that way. It will be good if 2nd and 3rd runner up prizes will be introduced.

• Dinner at ampelon gardens

• Meeting so many other printmakers. I come from a regional area where there aren't many

opportunities to network so this was brilliant.

• Being in the company of kindred spirits and able to enjoy the time thoroughly due to the quality of event organisation. No worries for the weekend!

• Too many to mention! The people. The food. The setting. The houseboat accommodation.

The swans and pelicans. The art!

• Meeting like minded artists.

• Forums

• The workshops

• Robyn Archer singing

We would appreciate a quote from you to help us get funding, sponsorship and to promote the next event.

• I have been to a lot of conferences over the years, this would have to have been one of the

best!

• The Australian print Triennial appeals to the national and international printmaking community, the gallery sector, local community, artists, and visitors to Mildura. It is a unique concept and vision for Mildura and Australia, it is innovative and progressive, contributing to regional community development through public appeal, engagement and cultural tourism.

• the superb inaugural Australian Print Triennial is set to become the "must not be missed

event on the printmakers calendar"

Page 18: 2015 APT Feedback - Australian Print Triennial · 2019. 12. 8. · 2015 APT Feedback Dear Julie, You’ve done a great thing for the art world at large. Thank you so much for including

• the meeting place for the like-minded,artistic and interested. Good papers, considered discussion, excellent food and music, generous atmosphere

• The Australian Print Triennial - consolidating a professional community through creating time

and space for presentations, workshops, dinners and fun.

• A rare opportunity to meet and associate with other artists and to visit a beautiful, vibrant regional centre.

• Supporting the arts is essential to their survival and the continued growth of culture within our

communities. Supporting the arts is financially sponsoring an event (or part of an event) and paying for a beautifully crafted artwork that will give you and your descendants much pleasure for years to come.

• Bringing great printmakers together to celebrate and learn from each other and enjoying the

moments.

• This is a unique opportunity for the community of artist printmakers to come together from all over Australia and beyond, to exchange ideas and learn from each other. A big advantage is that this meeting takes place in a regional setting, making it much more focused and egalitarian, relaxed and stimulating.

• The Australian Print Triennial was an informative and enjoyable experience. Attending this

event assisted in clarifying aspects of my printmaking practice, such as printmaking ethics, and channels for artistic development. The speakers and content of the talks and forums broadened my understanding of printmaking in Australia, and will inform my practice as an emerging artist.

• A great opportunity to make professional connections, be involved in the issues important to

us and to be inspired - by other printmakers and the roadtrip!

• Explore printmaking, Discover yourself.

• The whole event left me buzzing, very inspired about the possibilities of printmaking.

• Such an important event for the print community in Australia. Sharing ideas and talking about current issues regarding practice

• Good range of speakers and topics; well organised and welcoming

• For three days Mildura was abuzz with all things printmaking as artists, curators, academics,

students and members of the public came together to share stories, exchange ideas, and look at great art by the banks of the Murray. Congratulations to Julie Chambers and the Art Vault team for a fabulous first APT. The next one will be eagerly awaited!

• A dynamic and inclusive event benefiting the local and wider arts community. Not to be

missed.

• This is an important and worthwhile event for the advocacy of printmaking in Australia and abroad - please let this be the first of many!!

• Through the Australian Print Triennial I am now in contact with so many artists that were just

names to me before - big names. and through social media i hear from so many of them what a buzz the whole weekend was. A wonderful and valuable experience

• The opportunity to spend time with peers in the arts industry is an invaluable asset to cultivate

new ideas, share skills and promote growth and Art Vault made this happen on a grand scale.

• Information obtained through workshops and presentations was invaluable. I came home feeling inspired.

• "A beautiful place to hold such an event. Thank you Art Vault!"

• This is the most important forum for printmakers in Australasia

• I will happily drive twice as far to travel to APT in 2018.

• Amazingly well organised with a really high quality of art work on show

• The APT bought people from everywhere together and was a most supportive and unifying

event-one of the best if not the best I have been to.

• A great stimulus for artist printmakers and a jewel in the crown for the Mildura arts community.

• The APT will leave its legacy on Australian printmaking for years to come

• The Australian Print Triennial was an exceptional event - stimulating presentations and

discussion from leading printmakers, curators and gallerists, four high quality exhibitions and great food, music and venues in the Mildura Botanical Gardens and on the Murray River. Thank you so much to Julie Chambers and the Art Vault team for your professionalism and generosity, I feel very privileged to have been be part of this inspiring inaugural triennial.

• The 2015 Australian Print Triennial at Mildura was the highlight of my professional year. I

can't wait for the 2018 APT.

• Having a repeated Printmaking Triennial event in Mildura is good for Mildura, the Arts and Australian Artists.

• The Australian Print Triennial was an inspiring event in an inspired location. The opportunity

to spend time with peers and actively engage in printmaking practice at one event is unique in Australia.

• For a regional person with limited access to other artists and networking opportunities the

Australian Print Triennial was an amazing opportunity - I couldn't recommend it enough.

• This is far and away the most generous, rewarding and downright enjoyable event of its kind that I have ever attended. I felt extremely privileged to have been invited to take part, and absolutely everybody I spoke to felt the same way. The Art Vault have set a new standard for Printmaking symposiums.
