The last year has proven to be extraordinarily successful, marked by

significant progress made on several major initiatives for Heartland

Family Service.

We finally wrapped up the construction

of our North Omaha Intergenerational

Human Services Campus, a $32 million

collaborative effort we undertook,

beginning in 2010, with Holy Name

Housing Corporation. We implemented

our new comprehensive electronic health record, myEvolv, a project

that also commenced in 2010. For the first time ever, all of our

programs are on the same system and we are able to access real

time, accurate data about the people we serve and the impact our

programs have on them and our community. Most excitingly, we

are now positioned to conduct

longitudinal research to determine the

effectiveness of our programs in

achieving durable change.

As this report illustrates, these two

examples are joined by many other

achievements, none of which would have been possible without your

support. Thanks so much!

Therapist John Witchger struck a chord with her. Shetriedtofirehimatleast15timesthatfirstyear,buthedidn’tlethergiveup.Healsohelpedher secure housing through the Heartland Family

Service Rapid Rehousing program. Now sober since May 2009, Angie was able to secure joint-custody, and her ex-husband and kids eventually moved back to the area. She completed her GEDanddecidedtogotocollegetobecomeadrugandalcoholcounselor. She began working at Heartland Family Service in the Homeless Services program in November 2013, leaving only recently after taking a direct-service position at another local agency. DDuringherchildhood,Angie’s“normal”wasfullofdrugs, violence, and run-ins with law enforcement. Her father had been in prison her whole life, and her mom raised all four kids by herself. To make ends meet, her mom sold drugs, which also landed her in jail off and on.

“IstartedusingmethwithherwhenIwas12,anditjustsortofcatapultedfromthere,”saysAngie,nowinher30s.“Bynow,IthoughtIwouldbedeadorinprison.”

When her husband became abusive, she took to the streets with her four kids in order to escape him in 2003. Three years later, she was arrested on drug charges, and her ex-husband was awarded full custody. He and the kids moved away, and Angie went back to the streets. For years she was chronically homeless, staying in everyshelterinthemetroarea.In2007,sheagainwasarrestedandordered to do a drug and alcohol evaluation.

16 Creating the path to a better tomorrow for 140 years.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I had started our own version of HomelessStreetOutreach, whenIcameacross(HeartlandFamilyServiceOutreachCoordinator)SarahHughes.Wehappenedtobein the same camp visiting some of the same people on the same day. She shared with me what Heartland Family Service does, and it was closely aligned to what I like to do as well. We began talking more about ways we could work together.

I like the focus on helping clients getting restarted in life with a home that they can come home to, that they are happy with, and is comfortable. I believe it reminds them that they have left other

things behind and are starting over. In short, it gives them hope for a better tomorrow.
