GREETINGS FROM THE BU PRESIDENT

Your gifts and generosity make a difference in the lives of others and in the future of Brandon University.

This year, the Annual Report presents a series of numbers and graphs that attempt to speak to the level and scale of your generous contributions. The magic happens, however, when your gifts and generosity reach our students through the scholarships, bursaries and awards provided at the University. This magic and the appreciation are evident in the stories told by the recipients. These stories recognize the impact of your donations in supporting their continued education, motivating their family and community members to consider post-secondary education, and creating possibilities for a new generation of individuals who will contribute to the quality of life and prosperity within our communities and province.

The Foundation supports the University through its involvement in fundraising and in overseeing the endowments. The Annual Report therefore reflects these roles and celebrates the efforts made by Brandon University to be an outstanding institution through excellence in teaching and learning; research, scholarly and creative activities; and the services provided. For instance, contributions to the Indigenous Education Initiative, Bachelor of Nursing program, and numerous individual scholarships and bursaries have supported the academic mission of the University and the educational goals of students. The naming of laboratories in the Faculty of Science and the recognition of outstanding service celebrate the leadership and commitment to excellence by faculty and staff.

More than $1.4 million in financial assistance was provided to students this

past year. All of our recipients express their sincere appreciation to you for these gifts and donations. They say thank you in many different ways and, by reading this report, you will see their expressions to you. The Foundation also provides an opportunity to celebrate your contributions through the President’s Circle. Kathy and I were very pleased to host the annual Holiday Reception at our home in December. Events and messages such as these are also our way of saying thank you.

Brandon University is comprised of students, faculty and staff as well as alumni, donors, and supporters who come together and serve as a catalyst for the transformation and advancement of the lives of individuals, as well as the growth and development of many communities. We often speak about our professional work—this report speaks about our “life’s work” and it is measured in the benefits you have brought to the lives and possibilities of others. Again, my sincerest thanks.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gervan Fearon

President and Vice-Chancellor

I am constantly reminded that no matter how much we think we know we still have a lot to learn. I have been in and around Brandon University for most of my life. I have seen about nine Presidents, a number of Chancellors and countless Deans and Department heads.

My earliest memory of BU is likely playing in the Grade 8 band for the sod-turning when they started to build the John R. Brodie Science Centre and McMaster Hall. Like almost all of you who are reading this, I have come to love this place. We all have different reasons why we love it, but we love it nonetheless.

The world has changed a lot since I was a BU student. Back then tuition was less, even in relative terms. Government assistance for students was more abundant, and student job programs made it possible for nearly anyone who wanted a decent summer job to get one.

The student population has also changed from straight-out-of-high-school graduates being the norm, to students from a wide variety of backgrounds becoming the new tradition.

With government funding being less than the cost of education and the student population evolving demographically, the needs of students have changed dramatically. You, the

supporters of BU, have answered the call of those changing needs. Every year we have numerous examples of donations to fund scholarships and bursaries aimed to help both the historic traditional student and what I call our new traditional student.

A month ago my wife and I attended the Awards Reception, the annual mixer for award recipients and donors. Wow, did I get my eyes opened. While talking to some of these students I came to gain a better understanding of how important the support you have provided to them is. I met several single mothers who, without your support, would not be there. I met families who were so proud of their students and their accomplishments.

So on behalf of the students who have not had a chance to meet you, I want you to know how important your support is. Whether you support student awards, or other campus initiatives, it’s not just a tax deduction, it’s a start on the path to a better future for real people.

Thank you so much for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jeff Cristall

Good NewsPENT iPad Initiative

BU alumnus Mr. Gerald Butler, BSc ’63, has spearheaded a special fundraising project to put one Apple iPad in the hands of each student enrolled in Brandon University’s Program for the Education of Native Teachers (PENT). These students work in their home community schools during the school year and then spend summers taking a full load of courses at BU, working toward an integrated Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree.

This initiative helps students become better prepared to incorporate technology into their teaching strategies and provides access to online support resources such as textbooks, curriculum support, and lesson planning while on campus at BU, as well as when they return to their communities and schools.

Sally J. Wilde Memorial Scholarship

Sally J. Wilde, who suffered from anxiety and depression, and had been seeking medical and psychiatric help, took her own life in July 2015, devastating her family and friends. Determined to do something to help others in similar situations, her family has established a scholarship for students in the Master of Psychiatric Nursing Program, in hopes of encouraging them to excel at their profession. Through generous gifts from Sally’s family and friends, the Sally J. Wilde Memorial Scholarship Fund has grown to more than $45,000 and will provide an award of approximately $2,000 annually to a student who is undertaking research related to severe and persistent mental illness. Preference will be given to students who are researching depression and/or suicide prevention.

In 2015, $36,600 was raised for the project through private gifts and from The Cardinal Foundation, which provided $12,000, and The Winnipeg Foundation and Thomas Sill Foundation which provided $10,000 each. Thanks to their generous support, 100 students have returned to their northern and rural communities equipped with technology that is helping to ensure successful educational curriculum delivery.

New Award Established at BU in Honour of Guru Nanak Dev

Brandon’s Sikh community has established a new scholarship at BU in honour of the founder of Sikhism. The Guru Nanak Dev Scholarship will award approximately $1,400 each year to a continuing BU student on the basis of academic merit and a record of significant community service to a volunteer organization.

“We are proud to support this scholarship in honour of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism,” said Ramjit Mann, who led in the development of the endowment fund. “His philosophy was very simple: make your living by honest means, share your earnings with the poor, sick and disabled, and respect nature for the abundant resources provided to humankind.”

Approximately 24 members of Brandon’s Sikh community contributed $17,100 to the fund. Their contributions have been matched by the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative to create an endowment of $34,200.

MNP Honours Memory of Shawn de Delley with Gift to BU

MNP is honouring the memory of Shawn de Delley ’92, a long-time MNP employee, BU supporter and BU Foundation volunteer, with a bursary to assist students enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration program. MNP’s gift of $25,000 has been matched with an equal amount from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative. $7,000 in personal gifts from MNP partners has been added to these

funds to establish an endowment of $64,000 to create the Shawn de Delley Memorial Bursary, which will provide approximately $2,800 annually to a student in need.

In September 2013, de Delley lost a courageous battle with cancer. He is remembered by all who knew him as an individual that gave significantly of his time and expertise to better his community and University.

“This scholarship will be a tremendous help to our students,” said Tom Brophy, BU’s Associate Vice-President, Student Services and Enrolment Management, and University Registrar. “It will support future leaders who will hopefully follow the positive example that Shawn de Delley has set for them.”

Brandon Regional Health Centre Auxiliary Triples Support for BU Nursing Students

The Brandon Regional Health Centre (BRHC) Auxiliary has tripled its financial support for students in BU’s Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing programs. Its endowment fund has increased from $70,000 to $140,000 with matching contributions from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative. As well, the BRHC Auxiliary has committed to increasing each of their three bursaries from $1,000 to $3,000 annually.

“The purpose of the Auxiliary is to fundraise and to use those funds to enhance patient care,” said Marlene Brichon, President of the BRHC Auxiliary. “Usually we buy equipment for the hospital, but we also appreciate that well-educated caregivers are very important to patient care, which is why we chose to support these bursaries.”

The BRHC Auxiliary said the increasing costs of tuition, books and other aspects of post-secondary education are good reasons for increasing its support to meet the needs of today’s students.

Brandon University Dedicates Chemistry Labs in Honour of Longtime Faculty Members

The Dr. Bruce & Mrs. Jane Forrest Laboratory for Physical Chemistry and the Dr. Peter Letkeman Laboratory for Analytical & Inorganic Chemistry have been dedicated in recognition of the former faculty members’ distinguished careers and generosity to Brandon University.

Dr. Letkeman’s career at BU spanned 1963 to 2003. From 1972 to 1980 he served as the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, and from 1982 to 1993 as Dean of Science. He has been instrumental in the establishment of two scholarships, the Dr. H.V. Kidd & Dr. Peter Letkeman Scholarship in General Chemistry, and the Dr. Peter Letkeman Scholarship.

Dr. Forrest’s career at BU began in 1986, and he served as Chair of the Chemistry Department for 16 years. Before his passing in 2013, Dr. Forrest established The Dr. Bruce and Mrs. Jane Forrest Scholarship for Physical Chemistry, as well as a bequest to fund The Dr. Bruce and Mrs. Jane Forrest Scholarships for Honours/Majors Chemistry.

“Through the scholarships they have established, both Dr. Forrest and Dr. Letkeman have left a legacy that will continue to benefit Chemistry students for many years to come,” said Dr. Andrew Egan, former Dean of Science.

Legacy Giving

Lifelong Learner Leaves Bequest to Assist Students Following a 25-year career as an orderly at Toronto East General Hospital, Douglas Simpson enrolled at Brandon University as a mature student. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1998 and a Bachelor of General Studies in 2000. Even after receiving his two degrees, he continued studying and volunteering at BU, and enjoyed gaining as much knowledge as he could.

Simpson passed away in 2015. Through a significant bequest in his will, he established the Douglas Simpson Scholarship, a legacy gift that will provide four scholarships annually of approximately $1,500 each to students entering Brandon University.

Gift Honours Love of Learning and Gardening Cristine Winkler was born in Harmsworth, Man., in 1914. She contracted measles when she was a very small child and as a consequence lost her eyesight. Despite this, she ran a wholesale flour business in Virden before retiring in Brandon. She had a passion for politics and loved learning, animals, birds, and gardening. Cristine passed away in 2013 but she will be remembered through the Cristine E. Winkler Memorial Bursary, which she established with a bequest of more than $11,000. The bursary will be awarded to students who are registered in at least six credit hours of botanical courses.

In December 2015, President’s Circle donors were invited to a Holiday Reception at the home of Dr. Gervan Fearon, BU President and Vice-Chancellor, and Kathy Moscou.

The Brandon University Foundation President’s Circle recognizes BU’s most dedicated supporters, with annual giving of $1,000 or more for private donors, and $5,000 or more for corporate donors. These donors help make significant enhancements to the programs and services available to students.

Our annual Awards Reception was held on March 23, 2016 to celebrate the 589 scholarships and bursaries that were awarded to 665 Brandon University students in the 2015-16 academic year. Thanks to the donors who fund these awards, more than $1.4 million in financial assistance was provided to these students.

Legacy Gift Provides Unrestricted Funding for BU

Ernest Criddle, class of ’52, was born into farm life near Wawanesa. Brandon College provided Ernest with a background in chemistry, physics and math. His career touched on diverse tasks including physical chemistry, fuel cells, space, management, clean rooms

and cold fusion. From 1988 up until his passing in 2015, annual gifts from Criddle, along with his wife Rosemary Bonyun, were given in support of the John E. Robbins Library, the Faculty of Science, scholarships and bursaries, and various campaigns. His generosity is further demonstrated through a $10,000 bequest of unrestricted funding to BU, which will be used for the most pressing needs of the University.

The A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society is named in honour of Albert Edward McKenzie, the first person to leave a legacy gift to Brandon University. Given at the height of the Depression in the 1930s, his gift saved the University from certain closure. Since that time, many others have given generously to Brandon University through gifts in their will, gifts of life insurance, or other legacy giving methods, each making a significant impact on our institution.

We are pleased to recognize these individuals as members of the A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society.
