SCICF in Action

Mission StatementOur mission is to contribute to a better life for people of South Central Iowa by helping donors to carry

out their charitable intent and by providing responsible stewardship of gifts for community purposes.

2015 Annual Report | South Central Iowa Community Foundation 3

Message to the Community

I’m so excited to announce that in 2015 South Central Iowa Community Foundation had the privilege of

not only awarding over $1.2 million in grants and scholarships to many worthwhile community projects,

but also added sixteen new endowments that will benefit various charitable causes for years to come!

None of this would be possible without having so many generous supporters who believe in growing

stronger and better places to live, work, play, and retire.

I have the pleasure of being surrounded by dedicated individuals who

serve on the board, competent staff, and Foster Group who assist us in

making financial decisions that help us grow.

I am pleased to pass the role of Board Chair to Lori Borcherding of Clarke

County. I look forward to her leadership, energy and ideas to help us move

forward.

I would like to thank all of the wonderful community foundation supporters. Whether you are investing

your charitable dollars or your valuable time, you are making a difference in South Central Iowa.

We are proud of our communities and the generosity of individuals, families, non profits and businesses

who work with us to strengthen our communities for the benefit of all.

Thank you for all that you do to make a difference in your community.

“We Love Our Donors”

South Central Iowa Community Foundation | 2015 Annual Report8

What is a Community Foundation?

A Community Foundation is a vehicle for people from various walks of life and all means to make

a lasting difference in their community. Its central purpose is to serve the needs and philanthropic

goals of donors who wish to better their community, now and in the future. Community

Foundations do this by providing donors with flexible, efficient and tax-effective ways to ensure

their charitable giving achieves the greatest possible impact. These gifts are often in the form

of permanent endowments.By their very nature, endowments are designed to last in perpetuity.

This means that the actual gift made to the Foundation is never spent. Instead, the contribution

is invested and interest earned is used to award grants to charitable organization and projects.

In addition to serving donors and making grants to local non-profits, the Foundation serves as

a proactive catalyst, creating new initiatives to meet the growing and changing needs of the

community.

Why Give?If you could talk to the many people comprising our list of donors, they would tell you that in

addition to the altruistic value of giving, there are also many sound financial reasons for making a

charitable gift to the Community Foundation, such as:

• Maximum tax advantages—because the Foundation is considered a public charity

• Permanence—because gifts are endowed, they will continue to impact the community for generations to come

• Flexibility in the types of assets that may be used to start your named endowment fund or to contribute to existing funds

• A wide variety of planned giving tools• Sound professional management and investment practices• The ability to grant to several organizations through one gift

Ways to Give

1 . Gifts of Cash—You may make a contribution of any size to any existing fund by writing a check

to the South Central Iowa Community Foundation.

2. Publicly Traded Securities—Contributions of securities are attractive to people who have held

stocks or bonds for a long period of time. With greatly appreciated securities you can make a

contribution to the Foundation and avoid significant capital gains taxes.

2015 Annual Report | South Central Iowa Community Foundation 9

3. Life Insurance—You may donate the policy to the Foundation and receive an immediate

tax deduction, usually an amount equal to the cash surrender value. Or, you may name the

Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy in which the face value

ultimately goes to the Foundation. Your continued premium payments on the policy are also tax

deductible.

4. Volunteer—Your time and talents to one of the many endowment funds or

grantees served by the Foundation. You can make a difference in your

community.

Permanent FundsIt’s easy to establish a fund with the South Central Iowa Community Foundation. Each fund is

governed by a legal document—a fund agreement—that specifies the name of the fund, its intent

and, if it is donor advised, the donors may recommend grant distributions from the fund.

The fund agreement is an important document because it describes the donor’s charitable

wishes. Because endowed gifts are designed to last in perpetuity and benefit the community for

generations to come, it is the fund agreement that will ensure distributions will always be made in

a manner consistent with the donor’s charitable intent.

• Unrestricted Funds—Unrestricted Funds have the greatest potential for meeting the community’s urgent needs. Recommended by the Grants Committee and expended at the discretion of the Board of Directors, unrestricted funds give the Foundation the flexibility to respond to the changing needs of South Central Iowa.

• Field of Interest Funds: Field of Interest Funds allow donors to specify a particular field (such as recreation, the arts, or the elderly) without limiting grants to any one organization serving that field.

• Donor Advised Funds: Donor Advised Funds are created to allow input from the donor in recommending potential grant recipients. In accordance with regulations, final approval still rests with the Board of Directors.

• Agency Endowment Funds: Agency Endowment Funds allow organizations to receive income for their operational needs or charitable activities from funds administered by the Foundation.

• Donor Designated Funds: Donor Designated Funds are designed to serve a specific beneficiary.

• Scholarship Funds

4th of July Endowment

The Chariton 4th of July Celebration Committee is a nonprofit organization which operates

exclusively for charitable and educational purposes and whose sole purpose is to keep the

observance of Independence Day alive and well.

The Chariton 4th of July is a long standing event

which started out with a one day run and for the

past several years has been a three day run. The

main reason for this change was the carnivals

would not want to setup for a single day.

One of the major hurdles to holding this

celebration is raising funds to finance it. The

committee doesn’t receive any yearly funding

from any source or from taxation. The committee holds several fundraisers throughout the year,

the main one being an annual free will dinner and auction. They also hold bag tournaments, canvas

paint events, and even added a circus this year. The committee accepts monetary donations in any

amount and all proceeds from the events go toward the next 4th of July celebration.

The 4th of July Endowment was created within SCICF in 2011 to sustain the 4th of July celebration.

Since being established the endowment has received nearly $35,000 in gifts.

SCICF Board Members Read to Children

SCICF board members visited children served by Headstart in our 5-county region and read books to

them. After reading, the board then gave each child a book for them to take home. For some, it was

their very first book which they could call their own. Over 350 books were given to the children in our

5 counties. SCICF believes that children are one of our greatest assets and all must strive to be good

readers to be productive citizens able to positively contribute to society as adults.

Margaret Ricker Memorial Fund

The Margaret Ricker Memorial Fund was established in 1999 by Dr. Bruce & Michell Ricker in

honor of Bruce’s grandmother, Margaret Ricker. Since being established, the fund has received

over $93,000 in gifts and has issued grants totaling over $40,000, which have helped children in

Ringgold County learn to become good readers.

Margaret Ricker was a teacher who enjoyed reading to her children and grandchildren. She

impressed upon Bruce the importance of every child becoming a good reader. Margaret always

said that reading is the single most important skill children need to be successful in school as well

as in life.

The Margaret Ricker Memorial Fund supports both the Raider Reader and the Maroon Reading

programs. These programs help every child in Ringgold County in Kindergarten through 6th grade

become the best readers they can be. The programs provide incentives to motivate children to

regular continual at-home reading until reading is mastered and enjoyable. Teachers love the

program because it engages the parents in the learning to read process and parents love it

because they get to spend quality time reading with their children.

McKinley Park

McKinley Park is a beautiful 113 acre park located in Creston, Iowa. The park was created in 1874

when the first trees were planted and the lake’s dam was built. At this time the park was a private

venue and even included a zoo. In 1917 the building served as temporary barracks for the National

Guard Company “C” between the time that unit of the 168th infantry regiment returned from guard duty

on the Mexican border to the time they left for duty overseas. The building burned in 1943.

The goal of the McKinley Park Restoration Committee is to improve and maintain this gem. The

McKinley Park Endowment was established in 2008 to develop

and maintain the park. The committee has made several updates

to the park over the years. They added the first FEMA approved

restroom/storm shelter in Southwest Iowa, a park shop with

handicap- accessible restrooms, several playgrounds, a walking

trail, lights for the trail, a memorial garden, benches, and a

disc golf course. They also planted over 100 new trees in the

park, made watershed improvements, and renovated an older

restroom and the band shell. The committee currently has a few

ongoing projects which they are working on. Including installing

solar lights on the walking trail from the Historical Complex

to the campground, adding a foot golf course, constructing

sediment ponds north of the Adams Street bridge, and the yearly

cleanup of Hurley Creek watershed.

The committee holds a number of fundraising events throughout

the year to maintain the

park. Several grants have

also been received from

many organizations to help

sustain beautiful McKinley

Park.

John Untiedt Conservation Endowment

John Untiedt Conservation Endowment was established in 1998 in memory of John Untiedt who

was a community leader and strong advocate for the Decatur County Conservation Board. The

dollars generated from the endowment are used to help the Decatur County Conservation Board

provide quality recreational and educational opportunities for the residents of Decatur County

and Iowa. Through the years the conservation board has used the funds generated from the

endowment to help purchase such things as picnic tables, playground equipment, grills, prescribed

fire equipment and many other needed items. The conservation board hopes to keep growing the

endowment to provide a lasting source of funding to improve the quality of recreation in Southern

Iowa for many years to come. Growing the endowment will be very important as the conservation

board is presently working on two large projects at the Little River Recreation Area. One is the

construction of the Savanna Hills Learning Center and the other is the expansion and improvement

of recreational facilities at the park.

Murray Community School Foundation

The Murray Community School Foundation was established in 1996 to provide benefactors to the

Murray School District a means of assisting the students and school in the following areas: student

scholarships, technology funding, academic enrichment, and educational improvement grants. The

foundation has funded several projects throughout the years such as: Murray Engineering Club, drama,

art, & music departments, elementary and secondary libraries, a school sign, playground equipment,

science equipment, and other academic and extra- curricular activities. Each year at graduation

scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors pursuing higher education.

The Murray Community School Foundation hosts a variety of fundraisers throughout the year such as

pancake and chili suppers, grid-iron lotto, pie auctions, and at least once a year one sales item project.

This year the members are selling tablet cases. The Murray Community School Foundation has a

current market value of $116,589.14.

The Kimball Family Foundation

We were introduced to the concept of a community foundation when Jim was asked to serve on

the South Central Iowa Community Foundation’s board of directors representing Clarke County. Jim

had been the recipient of others benevolence when he was in high school and college. Grants and

scholarships made it possible for him to attend Phillips Exeter Academy, Grinnell College and the

University Of Iowa College Of Medicine. His educational experience literally changed his life. Since

that time we have felt a desire to assist medical students from our community. In December 2001,

we established the Kimball Family Foundation fund for medical education. The fund is administered

by South Central Iowa Community Foundation. Establishing the foundation is one of our ways that

we give back to our community.
